He was the John Paul Jones of the 1990s. Superb player.

Both of them cited James Jamerson as one of their primary influences, STP always swung harder than their "Grunge" counterparts, although to me the "Grunge" classification of STP was erroneously tagged to them. It was like every Baritone who's band used distortion was automatically "Grunge".

Robert DeLeo was not only one of the best bassists, but also one of the best songwriters of the 90s. He and his brother Dean's knowledge of unusual chords and musical styles gave STP their distinct sound. Weiland's incredible vocals were such a perfect and natural fit. In their prime, they were one of the best bands in the world.

Yes, STP stood out for musical sophistication. That was clear from Core onwards. They're one of the genius bands, pushing creativity.

Well said and I totally agree. Unfortunately Scott's inability to control his demons ruined it.

Robert DeLeo is a criminally underrated bassist. His bass line in Interstate Love Song is an absolute gem, just like many other STP bass parts. Great video, as always!
    Can't wait for part 69 :D
How about Tony Levin for the next video? He's an absolute monster, one of those session greats who make a good song great with their playing - and one of those very few who can be easily recognized by a single note. Another idea is the late great Mick Karn - a fretless wizard from another dimension. Nobody played like he did. Both are among my most important inspirations.

I'd say he's an underrated bassist, but any bassist who knows what's what recognises exactly how good he is. Probably underrated in terms of his overall contribution to the band's sound.

Ever since the Debut of Stone Temple Pilots I've always thought that Robert DeLeo was an awesome bassist. His style, and his bass fills were solid, and they really filled the sound.

Just learning bass, (guitar player for years) Plush is my favorite song to play on Bass, got it down to the point that I learned it on guitar, earlier today actually. It's more fun on Bass though.

I’m 23 years old and Robert DeLeo has been one of my biggest influences growing up. I play electric bass and electric guitar and having knowledge of both instruments has allowed me to understand how he and his brother Dean play off of each other. Not to mention Eric Kretz is a brilliant drummer that compliments their sound and who could forget the unbelievable Scott Weiland on vocals (RIP).
I’m also glad you pointed out Robert’s baseline in “Art School Girl.” That’s one of my favorites off of Tiny Music.

Leo reminds me of a hybrid John Paul Jones & John Wetton. De Leo is epic and criminally overlooked.

Robert is one of my biggest influences... that kind of bass player I wish to become someday...thank you so much for your wonderful work Paul, a hug from Italy.
P.S.: speakin' about great bassists from the 90's and (in my opinion) underrated like Robert, can I suggest new episodes featuring Mick Grøndahl or Pat Badger? Wish you the best Paul ❤
