    I'm not very prog but I gotta admit that nobody's ever gotten a better tone out of a Fender Jazz than Geddy Lee.

      If you have a Jazz, put Tom Brantley Custom Rewinds Geddy J-Bass pickups in it, then get a Tech 21 Geddy preamp. This will get you real close.

      Definitely geddy lee and Rodgers waters are the first two people I think of when it comes to Fender jazz and fender precision respectively

    • @wll1500
      @wll1500 Рік тому +3

      @@TJTynes just getting a set of pickups isn't going to automatically give you Geddy sound. He gets that tone not just through his right hand technique but also through lots of sound engineering wizardry. There's compression, overdrive, and lots of EQ tweaks in that tone.

    I've been trying to sound like Geddy since I started playing bass 6 years ago and it's nice to see his skill finally be recognized by people who aren't necessarily hardcore Rush fans. I think it's also worth mentioning that with his flamenco technique also came an extensive use of chords to essentially fill the role of a rythm guitarist, he really went nuts with it on Vapor Trails and continued to use it on several songs on Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels. The speed and ferocity with which he does this using at most two fingers on his right hand took me a great many practice hours to wrap my head around.

    After a couple decades of playing flute and reading sheet music from the popular classic composers, I went back to bass guitar and bought a book of Geddy Lees tabs.
    And I start learning a few of my favorites and after a while I'm looking at this music, and compared to Bach say to myself, there's really not much here.
    And then I try playing along with Alex on one tempo, doing back beats across Neil's wizardry and not even trying to sing and realize that I just couldn't handle it if I were playing all of Lees parts in a cover band. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
    And that's why live rock music is so special.

    Sorry but the gear was a big part of Geddy's tone. From what I can tell his tone has changed about three times in the bands career and that was due to the basses he was playing at the time. His tone has that growly mid-range fuzz sound of his Rickenbacker or that Jazz bass with just the neck pickup on from the "self-title album" all the way up to "Signals." On "Grace Under Pressure" he switched to a Steinberger and a Wal bass, where his tone got more funky sounding. Then in the early 90's he switched back to a Jazz bass, but turned both the neck and bridge pickups on full, so that his tone was a good balance between the low end while still having that brighter funky sharpness to it.

    • @JJ_5289
      @JJ_5289 2 роки тому

      I love the tone he got back in the moving pictures era and his tone from the 90s till the end of their career with the jazz bass.
      His tone with the Wal bass is not my favorite. The tone of the bass on moving pictures/signals is the best

    • @losely451
      @losely451 2 роки тому

      @@JJ_5289 Yeah I actually think that his change in tones had a lot to do with the music of the time and what he was listening to. The Rickenbacker bass was kind of a staple of Prog rock bands which is what he was probably listening to mostly in the 70's, but then in the 80's came with new wave and he was probably listening to a lot of Sting and John Taylor from Duran Duran which is why he got the Steinberger and the Wal bass. And then in the early 90's you had the stripped down grunge thing going which is why he switched back to the Jazz bass.

    Not to take anything away from people like Weinrib or Sting, but the fact is that these guys write the songs they play and sing so their bass parts are written to accommodate vocals.
    It is more of a challenge for a bassist to sing and play a song not written by a bassist, like a jazz standard.

Every song note for note perfectly every lick every nuance right off the top of my head but I know the first album too but rutsey ain't Pratt. So I'm not too excited learning the first album. I can't lie only one piece is my unicorn tune from them natural science. What a friggin excerise. I know the notes can play them but it's a mover & your fret hand gets tired when I was young no problem but at 62 it gets tiring. Getting old sucks.

    Talk all you want, but Rush are like Yes for tasteless teenagers.
    Instead of Yes's complex passages elaborating fine songs, Rush are about aimless instrumental workouts that impress kids in between dull, unmelodic songs.
    There's not one good memorable song anywhere on the 20 albums.
