Hard to believe that all that's left of Pantera is Rex & Phil the music and memories. Long Live The Abbot Brothers and what they meant to metal an all of us.
Rex has always reminded me of John Paul Jones in the way he's often overlooked because of who else was in his band but is an absolute monster player in every aspect.
Rex’s grooves on the Pantera albums are amazing. Very underrated player.
because he play with a pick......so much easy
@@sebg2086easy but exactly right in metal. This finger stuff is overrated and not necessary in metal. It’s even annoying. And i say that as bass player (finger and pick player) and guitar shredder
@@a.g.4843 hahahahajaj wow
I had to stop and say that these String Theory docs are incredibly well shot. Wonderfully lit and edited.
When Rexs not in em.
great tone! Very underrated bass player imo...
@NESHMETAL dude shut the fuck up
@NESHMETAL dude shut the fuck up x2
@NESHMETAL but you were right
Yep. Rex won many metal magazine awards for best bass player 4 years in a row. That's not underrated.
because hes a pick player....dont take as much skill
Excellent tone. My favorite bass players are all about tone!
Rex....Justin Chancellor....Tim Cummerford...
Paul Poche holy shit we have the same taste, insanely accurate
Same taste here!
If you’re talking Tool, don’t forget about Paul D’Amour and his sick tone
add Jason Newstead for tone
i soo wanted to hear rex play pantera licks :(
David Ouellette Therr are isolated bass tracks of Pantera on youtube. Check them them.
Turn the volume off. There you go, how he was mixed in most Pantera records.
@@DapperHesher turn your volume up on your stereo, same with and justice for all you'll hear it
He really dont man. Only one that didn't continue to grind the pantera axe so to speak.
Ryan Miller I can hear him perfectly well in every Pantera album I can recall hearing. With metal in general, the bass isn't typically as prominent as in some other genres, and with Rex in particular, I don't think he likes to be the focal point (listen to the mixes in this video, I'm assuming those are his own, and he is very much filling a supporting role). That said, with a good stereo or a good pair of headphones, he can be heard loud and clear if you can tell the difference between guitar and bass tones, in everything I've ever heard him recorded on.
"It doesn't matter what you're feeling, or anything else. Those people paid damn good money to come see you."
Go watch a live Pantera show and pay attention to Rex. He always plays his ass off. Every musician should perform with his attitude.
He's so underrated, the "fans" sidelined him even though this video is about him !
Imagine how cool a Dimebag string theory would be...
He doesn't use ernie ball's
Yeah that would be cool but He was using DR guitar strings and has a signature set!
Rex’s tone has always been monstrous
Such a down to earth dude....
My grandma used to hang out with Rex at the Rolling Hills golf course in Arlington, Tx. She never listened to Pantera but she would always tell me when she saw he and his wife and how nice they were.
That's cool actually, I like when people I admire meet people who don't have a clue about them lol. How did she find out who he was, and how did you find out she would see him?
Rex is 1 of my all time bass heros.
kinda wished he played his groove from the Five Minutes Alone solo
Great interview, Rex it’s a monster bass player. The way he use to hold the groove and complement Dimebag solos was amazing
Rex went from Pantera to this? This is awesome!!!
It's pretty good, not really my kinda music but it sounds like it came from the heart, and he's an awesome guy
He didn't say anything bad about pantera, what is wrong with you??
+WritingRhymes WithLessTime You're a moron
He is a Legend!
Rex Brown and Paul Gray are why I picked up a bass in 07.
If Rex made me pick up bass, id put it back down.
Rex Brown is just a great musician!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 if your serious.
Coming from a guy who listens to Rory Gallagher lol
Rex is so chill.. he is awesome
He's somethin alright😒
One of my favorite metal bassists - dude has tone for days...
His walking basslines under Dimebag’s solos in songs like “Walk” and “Floods” are incredible.
Rex seams like one cool ass dude. Rock on #RexRocker
Rex Reject more like it.
Legend!!!! Pantera, one of my biggest influences and got my playing guitar. Thank you sir for all the great art!
He has the greatest basses from Warwick...just wow, all of them are works of art.
1:50 rare footage of Rex playing bass with finger
I've never seen him play with his fingers
When he was in Down he always played Stone The Crow with his fingers, pretty awesome!
Pretty sure his left hand was always playing with fingers.
@@Cheesurius Stone the Crow. Favorite Down song. Thanks for the info about it in relation to Rex's fingers.
Omg. My favorite bass tone of all time.
Hell yes!!! 🎉😊 I saw Dimebag and company AKA Pantera open for Black Sabbath when Ozzy came back to where he belonged and DAMN was that the most awesome metal show ever? Damn straight but wouldn’t have been the same without Rex Brown laying it down . AWESOME!!!
See now this is the ultimate metal bass tone and playing. Simple but not too simple, rough but not too rough and badass all the way.
Gotta love Rex!
This guy is awesome.
He's not underrated he's just not as popular as others. To the people who matter and know....he's definitely respected and appreciated
Love it! Great interview! Thanks for those thoughts and memories 💜 Love Hearing you Rock! Much Love
Man !
I really start to love those interviews ! i mean the sound is great, the talk is great, the quality of image is great and they interview fkn legends i mean what can i ask more ?
Thank you so much Ernie Ball
Groove MONSTER.
Rex, Ross Valory, and Sean Yseult are 3 of the most underrated bassists in the business.
@NESHMETAL Ross Valory is the bassist for Journey and Sean Yseult played for White Zombie. Two excellent bassists
THIS IS EPIC METAL HISTORY IN JUST A FEW MINUTES 😭🤘
One of the most criminally underrated artists ever
🎉 no hes not. Criminally overrated more like it. Criminally overrated crap.
Coming from a guy who likes Rory Gallagher haha!
@@nathueil1 bull shit
Lobe you Rex Brown! Such an icon!
That old Green Muff is THE best Muff for bass, and IMO one of the best pedals period for bass. But boy, are they damn expensive.
The bass green muff is also good for guitars man I'm trying to get one to play Stoner Metal on my strat.
Say what you want. The thunderbird is totally underrated
Great vid. we love Rex!
Stupid vid and no "we" dont.
Rex Rules!
Interesting music kinda hendrixy sabbath purple but new
weird to see rex not using a pick
Yes he was...
@@ami2evil rewatch 1:50-2:15 ish
Rex is a jazz bassist
Cool to see him play with fingers as well
One of the best pick bass players metal
I agree except with everything after the word One.
To eahc their own, I used GHS for over a decade, then tried D adarios & have stuck with them for 2 years so far, have Not broke a string yet on any guitar.
Holy shit, he still hasn't gain any weight. Love his work with Pantera.
And... The Pantera's riffs?
He has great tone!
When his amp is off.
He was bad ass on Down II and III crank up the bass and youll hear it
Bads the right word. I turned down his bass to And Justice for All level.
@@nathueil1 If that's what you think suit yourself lol
You can tell who the posers are. They write "Rex is underrated" while in real life the guy won MANY metal magazine awards, and has been endorsed by many top bass maker, and gear makers. He was naked best bassist in the early to mid 90s like 4 years in a row.
Bass is great,
To bad Rex isnt.
I still don't get how the Adam Clayton Reverso got tweaked as the Rex Brown model.
Damn,26 grandkids👍Rex the Man
He reminds me of willie nelson tbh
More like Willie Nelsons 💩.
goddamnit people. is no one gonna talk about the songs he was playing off of his album! i mean theyre his songs ryt
hamudz hasan really curious about what the tracks are called, I really want to know
Nope cuz they suck.
@@tjqu6506 Save your money Side A Side B.
That first thing he's jamming on the bass... is that just free style, or part of a song from one of his bands?
He had a new solo album coming out around this time.i assume it's probably from that.Have a good one man.🤘
That opening piece of music is pure bliss
Anyone knows??
Im wondering myself. That open A rings like a piano!
D'Addario!
What’s the first song played at the beginning?
Rex the Mighty.
The Mighty piece of crap💩
Grabs Warwick.. Thunderbird appears in his hands
What is the song called he’s playing at 1:52?
@eduard_reviews_stuff I found out it’s one of his songs called Best of Me
No Warwick Bass Guitars we’re harmed in the making of this clip…
This video should’ve been longer 😭😞😔
what's the tune AT 2:00
I thought it was Ritchie Kotzen.
i play the cobalts but power slinkys
Some pantera licks would have been cool, but I just wish it was him playing isolated with the song playing in the background
*WARWICK/FRAMUS*
If you wanna hear the Rex Brown bass pickups, from Seymour Duncan: ua-cam.com/video/knJdiOaqlSg/v-deo.html
that riff doe
What is the first Warwick bass he plays?
That is is his signature bass
"But I'm not gonna shoot fire outta my ass....it's about the music."
We should have "String theory with Dimebag Darrel".. RIP
God Zila he actually played DR strings
Strap on some super slinkys. Getcha double black tooth and raise some GODDAMN HELL!!
I put a lot of money into Ernie Ball over the years, just because so many artists use them. But I honestly never really liked most of them, and their "reinforced" ones are bogus as well. - D'Addario is similar but a little better. - But DR... Dime was onto something. I have played a bunch of DR-sets, including Dime's signature-set, and they're all just great. From the feel to the sound and consistency. I was pleasantly surprised. - Dunlops are great as well. You really don't need to go with the major companies like Ernie Ball and D'addario or Gibson and Fender or Canon and Nikon etc. - They make fine stuff, but not necessarily the best just because they're the biggest.
Who knew your local drug dealer could play bass that well?
Who knew an idiot like you could be commenting this.
Where is the "string theory" in this?
He's so good looking. AND IM A DUDE
dips on string theory as my new band name
Aaron Stone its dibs dumbass
I knew it he play his bass kind of like a guitar. He was probably a guitarist first.
He was, and a piano player before that. Rex plays piano on Cemetary Gates, btw.
@@benbond3433 Very true..You know your stuff about me!, thx..

hope he dont go out in the wind....whossssssh he`d be gone.
Thatd be to good to be true.
I wish all his bass parts were recorded like the bass on And Justice For All.
its cute that he briefly pretends to know how to pick with his fingers
What's wrong with his fingerstyle technique???
@@daveleblanc3558 They all suck 1-10
I hate hippies... my point of view is Pantera could find a better bassist...a metal bassist. But its history now... he wasn't a special bass player. Not good as Dimebag on guitar or Phil on the vocal...
You're tripping man, Rex held it down for Pantera. There'd be no Pantera without any 4 of those guys. They each contributed greatly in creating music together. Rex was the glue and kept the rhythm going while Dime was soloing. He wasn't always hippish, he's obviously older now and changed his style. If Dime was alive he probably would of ventured into country believe it or not. They don't have to stay one dimensional for their whole lives. Phil however bleeds metal, if it wasn't for him Pantera would if never transitioned into the legendary metal band they are today.
Hippies are cool, just not Rex Reject.
