To me, Michael is the best bassist they've ever had. Olivieri was badass but Michael has such a great melodic approach that compliments Homme songwriting so well. Don't make me talk about the tone, omg, what an amazing tone Michael achieved in the albums (and live).
Dave Grohl has openly admitted Nick is one of the best bassists he’s played with.
Well that's high praise from him, considering the bass players he's worked with, i guess that's why he said one of the best, so as to not step on anyone's toes, like his good friend and amazing teammate in kurt novoselic while being the highly honed rhythm section for Kurt to wail over, or the mighty john paul jones, that came out of the zeppelin shadow to sling bass on them crooked vultures with grohl, and let us not forget the infamous lemmy of motorhead and hawkwind fame that joined grohl on his probot side band, as did another bass playing singer cronos of the band venom, let alone the bassist in his rock n roll hall of fame group foo fighters, or any of the probably hundreds of people he's worked with or jammed with, but yeah that's high praise indeed, and gotta say i absolutely love them together as the driving engine for qotsa on the songs for the deaf album, so certainly wouldn't argue with him about his assessment of oliveri but would have loved to press him with a few follow up questions to why he felt that way
Nick for sure is one hell of a song writer. But in terms of delicacy of playing, he doesn't even come close to Alain Johannes or Mikey Shoes. Doesn't mean I'd consider him bad though.
@@Fritz-the-Brat Queen’s weren’t a really a delicate band when Nick was around, they were balls to the wall, though fun fact, he played bass bowed for Mosquito Song. The thing is Alain, Mikey and Nick are all different players, but what everyone forgets is that Nick was a core songwriter during his tenure in the band. Check the songwriting credits for Rated R and Songs for the Deaf. Not only were some of the songs just straight up his from before he joined the band (Tension Head, etc.) but he also co-wrote with Josh a lot on those two records.
I know Nick is controversial but I wish there was a way to find out more about him. I've always wanted to know his history with bass and his influences
Nick is an absolute beast of a player. Michael Shuman is a bit more sophisticated but Nick set the precedent of how to play bass in that band though.
No mention on I Appear Missing? IMO the best bass performance on any Queens song. Mickey Shoes is my favorite Queens bassist.

@@thelawyerfrommars Yep. I love Nick but Mikey is incredible. And, yeah, that last bit in IAM is really made by the incredible, melodic bass line.
'Mexicola' will always be one of my all time favourite songs. It has such a distinct and classic vibe.
I Appear Missing is one of my favs of both QOTSA and just favourite bass performances in general. So melodic and carries its own weight in the song. Michael Shuman outdid himself there imo

Not to mention the fact that Nick's singing and specially his screams were just a ferocious as his bass playing, making the songs he sang the perfect violent and fierce contrast to Josh's more laid back and calm voice.
I still enjoyed Like Clockwork and Villains though, you can tell the difference between the QOTSA albums with and without bassist, no disrespect to Homme but he sounds way better playing the guitar.
In the Fade is one of my favorite songs ever and probably my favorite QOTSA bassline. Great video!
Mikey Shoes is definitely my favourite QOTSA bassist and overall one of my favourites ever. I love his melodic approach that no other bassist that has been in the band really had
Great video. I just disagree with your claim that Qotsa is not a bass band. Even though they had a period without an official bass player, the bass always played one of the central roles in their songs and is very present in the mixes. Also, the basslines are interesting and inventive- you can tell that they worked hard to get a cool tone and groove. Hard rock basslines dont necessarily need to be virtuous to be cool
I met Nick and Brant Bjork last year in Oceanside when they were playing in their band Stöner. It was such a cool experience knowing they’ve seen so much and been through the mainstream to the underground, and yet, they were really chill guys that just appreciate the music and care about their fans. I got some pics with them too. Way better than an autograph in my opinion, because I’ll remember those photos forever.

Great video! Thanks so much I've been waiting for some recognition on QOTSA's bass players. Really enjoyed it, I think you nailed it. Shuman's taste for notes and Oliveri's fierceness are perfect descriptions.
I met both Mike and Nick in person. Mike at a merch stand when he opened up for „The Blue Stones“ with his Solo-project „GLU“. And Nick backstage when I played support for him actually, on his Solo „Death Acoustic“ tour. Mike is like a really layed back and chill character, while Nick gave me the vibe of a 52 year old child 😅

Nick was a beast of a bass player and songs for the deaf was QUOTSA’s pinnacle
Not only did Oliveri provide killer bass tones and riffs...he looked cool and gave the band more personality...sorely missed!
As much as I enjoy Oliveri's playing I always wished Scott Reader would've had a presence in Qotsa. He always seemed overlooked as a bassist since Tool and Metallica passed on him in the 90s.
Biggest mistake Metallica ever made, as much as Rob is a great player. I’m sure Scott would’ve written some incredible music with Hetfield, had he the chance. I feel like Chancellor was absolutely the right choice for Tool though. Similar aggressive picked style to D’Amour while being far more experimental. Not sure Scott’s wacky finger style and reverse-strung method would’ve worked too well with Tool stuff
Reader is underrated as hell. As much as I love Oliveri, Reader is undoubtedly the better bassist. Welcome To Sky Valley is a career highlight.

You need to make a video on Brian Ritchie, bassist of the great, unforgotten Violent Femmes. You will never find a more skilled musician, bass runs so idiosyncratic and genius -like or a band with an utterly original sound. You need to listen to the first 4 albums. Although I agree that Nick was QOTSAs best era tbh I really enjoy all the different styles of bass playing they have, keeps it interesting. Also I don't understand all the hate guitarists playing bass get as opposed to "real" bassists, it sounds different but not necessarily bad. Great video, will check out more in this series!

I think Oliveri and Schumann are some of the best at what they do. But what they do is wildly different so you can't really compare them.
Just like how it's hard to compare Songs for the Deaf and Like Clockwork because they are both so uniquely brilliant and distinct from one another

Definitely prefer Michael, it’s notable that almost as soon as Oliveri departed the band was able to become significantly more versatile sonically, the majority of the Oliveri stuff is very samey even if it’s a good samey

Hard listening to new QOTSA after just hearing their earlier songs, they just lose their punch
shoes is hands down the best bassist QOTSA has had. You might like the Nick-era songs better, but it’s definitely not because of the bass playing. Mikey carries a lot of the songs on the past three albums.

There was a cool chemistry between homme and oliveri, the psycho sound vs the punknroll attitude, toghether it was something beyond anyone else.
Rated R and SoftD are two masterpieces. The second one is the best rock album of the last 30 years
