    I think he is underrated, not in the metal community, on mainstream, as he is not talked about as much as say, Cliff or Steve Harris, or even John Myung for the technical freaks. He is more of thinking man's bass player. The rock community does feel he should be even more respected

    Pick using bass players are almost always under rated. There is a certain snobbery aimed at them.

    • @jaybirdk7414
      @jaybirdk7414 3 роки тому +11

      Hate to say it, but you’re right. As a guitarist who frequently doubles on bass, I usually get scrutinized a lot more for using a pick than I would playing finger style.
      Funny thing is, everything I record with a pick is “sick, dude!” So there’s that!

      Chris Squire, Justin Chancellor, Paul McCartney, Carol Kaye. Even John Entwistle, Geezer Butler and John Paul Jones would switch to a pick for certain songs.

    • @SigmaStoicGemini
      @SigmaStoicGemini 3 роки тому +5

      The punch, clarity and definition of the notes when using a pick just can't be duplicated playing fingerstyle, in my opinion. For me, my fingerstyle playing, the notes are just too muddy, the sound just too boomy. While I LOVE Cliff, Steve, Geddy, etc, pick players like Dave, Chris Squire, Duff McKagan, Krist Novolselic, and Eddie Jackson of Queensryche are where it's at for me.

    Ellefson did a good job of staying out of the way. Sadly, it’s a tough gig to add punch but not muddy the sound or the song. Even harder when the songwriter doesn’t have a great feel for bass. Metallica got away with it because Cliff was better than James and Dave, and learnt what to do after his death... Tom Araya is even better because you don’t even know there is a bass in Slayer LOL 😆
