  • Join Emma Kenny for a deep dive into the harrowing case of Sylvia Likens, whose suffering at the hands of her caretakers remains one of the most disturbing tales from Indiana. In this episode, we explore the torment Sylvia endured, the psychological factors that led her abusers to commit such atrocities, and the trial that followed. We honor Sylvia's memory by examining the societal implications of her case, discussing the need for vigilance in child welfare, and advocating for stronger community support systems.

This is one of the most shocking cases. I actually can’t bring myself to listen to the details again. The mob mentality is a very scary part of human nature. Most of those kids probably would have gone on to lead somewhat normal lives if not under the influence of that evil woman.

theres a special crown for those who can explain thing like this and make it clear for others on the truth of what happened, but we need to take other cases into account to! there are may people out there do the same thing people like tiffany moss did to her step daughter by chaining her to a bed and starving the girl to death! with current laws in place we dont have the right to tell our children NO, but people get sick and tired of the threat from ridicules laws put in place by people who have never had children! and abuse is the result, Chaos is what the bush/clintion/obama/and biden want, 20 years ago if carter or Regan would've laughed and called it sweet as candy because some twisted woman walked into a classroom and started killing children they would've been removed from office because back then our children were valued by society! today children are seen as a burden thanks to Tyrants like biden/ bush/ obama/clinton putting policies in place that destroy families, consider what that Tyrant biden has done he has a policy in place that makes it legal for a rapist a stalker/Pedophile for follow their target into a bathroom into a gym locker and shower area in a rec-center or gym, and anyone trying to stop them gets arrested for discrimination, i have a granddaughter and if i ever see a man follow her into a bathroom it will be in that bathroom the police will find his body, regardless if he's dressed in drag! i worked in Maintenace and there were many times i would be cleaning the ladies room and they would walk in, and start unbuttoning, my words to a young woman who smiled were no this isn't happening and I walked out, morals are gone from our society with biden in office, at this moment somewhere a little boy is being bullied at school pushed into a bathroom stall because a demon dressed in drag showed explicit videos on sodomy and said it would be a good thing to try, and at the same time a lawyer is telling that kids parents 2 things they dont have a lawsuit because they said ok to that perversion in the classroom 2nd they can't post anything about it on social media, because it gives the bullies parents and the school ground to file a lawsuit against them!

Ever since I saw that film, I've been fascinated (but disgusted and angry) with this case. There was no justice for Sylvia in the courts, but there *is* justice with videos like these. Thank you, Emma, for the knowledge and compassion you always bring, and do please cover Cristina Pangalangan. the problem with the movies today is they give abusers like this new ideas of how to torture their or someone's child, the worst thing ive seen is when the children think its a normal thing not talked about, i knew a guy and his family they had young girls, and dogs/dog kennels in the house, but the kennels werent for the dogs they were for the children 2-6 years old, if the mood hit mom dad locked the kids in the kennels, if the kids acted up they were locked in the kennels, and unknown to me thats how those kids grew up, and they continued the cycle of abuse, they didnt see anything wrong and when someone reported it to child service's only then did they learn it was considered abuse, problem is people like this take advantage because they know how pissed off at this country's justice system are, theres no trust because of these laws in place, when i was 10 i was abused by a babysitter, unlike stupid teens today i knew i had a good thing with her, so no ones life was destroyed! today you go on a date you have to follow rules never drink anything you didnt open and then only drink from a can, never walk into a room alone with a date without someone you know you can trust unless you plan on giving them some

This is one that's always asked by people for true crime channels to cover along with Junko Furuta and I can understand why... No matter how many times I research them, it's always a shock to the system, the remainder of how truly evil people can be and how unfair the justice system can be...😣
Sorry that I keep asking for this, I know many are probably sick of seeing it but when it comes to true crime, I'm much like yourself incredibly passionate and empathetic towards the victims! I'm really passionate about his case, I'd love for you to cover the case of James Prout, no one ever talks about that case, besides Danielle Kristy, who's done a very nice video, but other than hers, I've only ever found one documentary and it was just all about the killers... James Prout deserved better and I think you could do that, I'll warn you though it's heartbreaking and it stayed with me for a very long time. 💕 ) (Also if you're ever lost for cases that aren't really covered all that much, which i doubt it but the cases of the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder, Alex Skeel, Adrian Jones aka the boy who was fed to pigs, Jessica Lunsford, Tom Somerset-How and Fan Man-yee, also know as the Hello Kitty murder case are a few, as well as the serial killers Gary M. Heidnik, Megan Huntsman, Sheila Labarre, Thierry Paulin, Randy Kraft, Robert Berdella and the horrific teenage murderer, Joe Clark they're definitely ones you need to cover as well, no one talks about them really either, they are cases of true and utter evilness. It would also be really interesting on your take on one's like the Miami cannibal attack, 1976 Chowchilla kidnapping, Hi-Fi Shop Murders, Hillside Stranglers, Washington Snipers, John Staffen and the recently identified Joseph Augustus Zarelli, who was formerly known as "boy in the box" and "America's unknown child. Have you also ever thought of doing more historical ones? Like murder of June Anne Devaney or killers Peter Kurten and H.H Holmes, etc, i think that would be really interesting and different to get your take on those historic cases x)

Just an endnote that turned out to be a lot more interesting than I expected- I wanted to see what became of Sylvia’s oldest sister Dianna. In 2015 when she was 66 and her husband was 70 they went missing for two weeks while on vacation. They’d made a wrong turn while attempting a short cut on their way to a barbecue. The car wrecked in the desert and they were stranded for two weeks. Tragically her husband didn’t make it but Dianna did. She’s grown from a beautiful young woman - all the Likens girls were beautiful- to a sweet and rosy cheeked grandmother who I hope is still with us. There’s footage of her at the 50th anniversary of Sylvia’s death at Sylvia’s graveside with a large crowd in attendance. I urge everyone to watch it though you probably will cry. Bless her for taking part in keeping Sylvia’s memory alive when she of all people shouldn’t have to. It speaks to what a wonderful woman she is.

@@ohlalalashes4069 I honestly don’t know how to cut and paste one UA-cam video to the comment section of another. Maybe there’s a way to do it but I haven’t figured it out. But if you just do a search for Dianne Likins it will take you right to the story about her and her husband as well and a separate video of the 50th memorial of Sylvia’s murder which I really think anyone who finds this story heartbreaking should watch. Get the tissues ready but it’s also inspirational.

My heart ached to hear of Sylvia’s torture and death. The sentences were a travesty of justice. The historical hanging, draw and quartering comes to mind as a more fitting sentencing for the major contributors. I am thankful that Sylvia’s suffering and death was marked in so many meaningful ways particularly with the changes to law, abuse centre and her memorial. I cried to hear the litany of injuries that Sylvia endured before her death and then I got mad. Any wrongful death is tragic but Sylvia’s was so unbelievable - there was so much evidence of abuse yet no one successfully advocated for her. This case is so shocking and unforgettable. I had not heard of it so thank you Emma for doing your deep dive and informing me.

I love how aware you are of stories that have been over told. I would also like to point out that no matter how many times I've heard stories, and I watch way too much UA-cam; True crime. Your perspective of stories are always more educating. Yet it's not just the information you put into them, it's how you tell the story. So if I've heard it once or a thousand times, I would much rather hear it for the thousands and one time from your perspective. 💚

These things has been happening since the start of human history. And before. It’s amazing that we as a species with a conscious mind, still are able to to treat our offspring and fellow humans like this. If someone from a different and better world came to greet us they would probably turn around and say: These are not intelligent beings. It’s really unbelievable how the humans have been treating the weakest during time. We’re not animals but some behave like it. Can’t be much brain in this particular head. I’m binging your channel atm because I had a tough childhood. Not because of abuse but because of early onset mental health issues. I was born in 1964 so I was considered as “weird”.
We ought to have gotten further since this case, but as long as people have greed and overwhelming emotions I think it won’t.
Thank you for putting the ugliest cases out there Emma 🤗

You really take the time to pause and highlight the dichotomy, the hypocrisy, the lies and delusion thst led to the horrible actions or neglect that then resulted in a beautiful and innocent soul perishing in the most inhumane manner. Hats off to you for not glossing over yhe unpleasantness. Much love, light and all things good to you, the poor victims of crime and everyone who listens to this. May God bless and keep us all.
