A recommendation I would make is to tape the business cards to the top of the kit. In the hospital, whenever we had emergency equipment that had the potential of malfunctioning, we had the service emergency number taped in a prominent location. My own personal first aid kit has emergency information on top where it can be seen by everyone. Clear packing tape will keep the cards clean.
That is a great idea!
I came to say the same, business cards are easily misplaced if searching through a kit while concentrating on a sick or injured animal if it's stick to the top of the box you always know where it is perhaps even picked up and accidentally disposed of when clearing up after administering first aid.

Tip from a veterinary nurse! Be careful with SSD if you have people in you're home who have silver or sulfur allergies. We usually recommend using a q tip to apply rather than your hands because this is STRONG stuff
And using gloves if allergic to betadine.

I would recommend offering the "Essentials" and "Essentials + Extras" first aid kits in your store - already assembled. That way your crew can recommend them to new pet owners who may not know these things are necessary.
They could also put in a little pamphlet with info about the products (such as what they are and some common uses and some uncommon ones) it would be super useful for first time keepers

This channel has literally changed the way my brain functions-- I'm not even kidding, half the things I know and love today stem from my first time watching this channel way back when!!! Reptiles are the base of so many of my interests and this channel was what introduced me to them in the first place!! I will forever be grateful for you guys and your dedication to your animals changing my life!!!
Same thing with me! I used to be scared if snakes, and now have two Ball Pythons of my own! I would have *NEVER* gotten my two sweeties if it weren't for them.
I would also keep a little bottle of dawn dish soap and a vegetable oil. Especially if your enclosures have interior "sticky" thermal and humidity disc monitors stuck to the glass. And a paint brush. These can be used to get the sticky item unstuck from your reptile. Trust me, I learned this the hard way with an indigo snake. My vet wasn't laughing at all.
And yes, to those of you asking if it has to be Dawn. Don't use another dish soap unless you've already checked that specific brand with your local wildlife specialist. Oils are a little more forgiving, so long as you go for ones that are safe to consume with a neutral smell.
Great video. Be careful with Betadine as if organic material gets in it, it slowly deactivates. For example the gauze swabs. If left too long, the gauze will greatly reduce the effectiveness of the Betadine. Also for mammals, neat iodine will be too strong for the tissues so you would need to dilute it at least 1ml iodine to 5 or 10ml solutions. Especially of the 10%. Otherwise fab video as always. ❤️
There are iodine swab sticks you can buy. The small herp keeper probably doesn't need it. I bet snake discovery uses a lot of presoaked gauze before it breaks down. A bit much for your typical house
Just came here to say this- the betadine should be diluted prior to use and should be made fresh, not left sitting out on the gauze
What do you mix iodine with to make solutions? A saline?
@ShapeShifterCy just normal H2O if its up for to drinking standard 😊I only tend to mix with saline if it's for eyes. And the solution rate is 1ml iodine to 50ml saline for that.
As someone who owns no reptiles and followed this channel several years ago for baby snakes. I still try and watch every video so you have no winter/spring slumps in views!
Great post! Very useful. When I had gun dogs my vet, who was also a gun dog-person, put together a similar kit for travelling. Here's a couple other suggestions: 1) tape vet cards to top of box in addition to having in box 2) syringe bodies (no needles) for irrigation 3) tweezers & small forceps 4) magnifying glass 5) small flashlight. Also, put a checklist in box and schedule annual review to elim expired product
Love that you said to include numbers to area vets. That's particularly great if you have someone petsitting. If you live in a major city/don't drive, the number for local taxi service that will allow animals in carriers might also be a useful thing to keep with the vet phone numbers as well... especially if you have a friend or relative pet sitting. (I was a pet sitter once and found it very nice and thankfully unused that in the list of emergency numbers, the owners had included not just their vet and an e-vet, but also a local taxi service that would allow their large, non-service animal into the cab. Very useful as a teen who was pet sitting without a car.

This is amazing, as a veterinary medical professional this is all great advice. I will add there have been studies to show betadine and other antiseptic materials are best put directly on gauze as needed, presoaked gauze can lose potency and even start to harbor bacteria. Also "true" SSD (silver sulfadiazine) cream is prescription only in the US. It can be helpful for you to contact vet offices prior to needing them to make sure they can see reptiles and establish your pet as a patient, they may also have an ER recommendation.
So like I said, the true SSD cream is prescription only in the US. If you want backup your vet may be able to refill the prescription though

I’ve a feeling that might be part of a Shenanigans video, as they would need a reptile stuck in their decor to demonstrate, and they would probably be too focused on getting the reptile out of the decor to film a formal video.
@I hate this account very true, & obviously a stuck reptile is something to actively avoid, rather than hope for for an educational video. But, a mock up with a stuffed or plastic would work just as well.
I recommend putting in shipping heat packs. I keep a few in my reptile first aid kit in case I lose powee or if I have to transport a critter when it's cold outside.

This is so helpful! My snake has this tiny scab on his head, which we think he managed to do by climbing and rubbing it on the top of his enclosure. I have to thank you guys for the fact I have a snake, and the reason I'm so fascinated with them. I have such a beautiful snake and a channel to entertain me in my free time, you guys are seriously the best! My snake Calcifer the scaleless rat/corn snake is doing great, and it's all because you guys make quality content. Thanks for being a light in everybody's day Emily and Ed, you guys are amazing.
VET WRAP WARNING from a former LVT: Because it is so stretchy and sticks so well it is VERY easy to wrap too tightly and cut off circulation to limbs/tails if you're unfamiliar with using it. You should always unroll/stretch a segment from the spool before wrapping it around the wound, and continue to do so with new portions as you wrap until you're finished (there should be good vids from vets/veterinary schools on UA-cam to help visualize proper application). It also helps to roll it away from the body (think if you were to wrap a roll of duct tape around something with the nonsticky part touching it and the tape side on the outside). There should be some give to the finished wrap, the rule of thumb is you should be able to fit a finger between the wrap and the animal's skin, although that can be harder to judge with small critters with tiny legs like some lizards.
All that said, vet wrap is an excellent addition to human first aid kits too instead of dealing with medical tape to wrap wounds with gauze 🙂
When using it on horses we had to be careful because vet wrap also shrinks when it gets wet, causing further constriction on limbs.
@@nursingandoutdoors Good point! Other than some clinicals during school I only worked with companion animal vets, where it's a bit easier to notice if dressings get wet and need changing before that becomes an issue so I didn't really think about it. But that is definitely something to watch out for, especially if your reptile likes to soak or step in their water dish
The Quick Stop stuff does indeed sting. I got one of those "stops bleeding from shaving nicks instantly" sticks. I had NO idea that it would sting, so when I first used it it was quite the shock. Some adult language came out of my mouth, but it did stop the bleeding instantly. XD

One thing I've seen used and this is specifically for birds (but could be for any animal) is cornstarch or flour. When cutting the nails of my birds If I accidentally trimmed a little too far because birds like to squirm when having nail trims I would use unbleached flour because it packs with the blood and helps it to clot really fast (I learned this technique from my mom who used to be a vet tech and now does dog grooming. sometimes the birds (or other animals) will like to pick and lick at whatever you use to stop the bleeding and eat it or try to. cornstarch and flour stop bleeding pretty well and is safe for the animals case they decide to lick it or mess with it so that's just an alternative for people who have animals that like to mess with their wounds. It's completely safe for the animals to ingest.
Thank you that is great to know I’m always worried about my pets licking anything I use I also have a lot of allergies and was always worried to try things like a quick stop in fear I may be allergic (it’s happened with pet products before) it’s not fun suddenly being allergic to your animal then having to fix that while there already not feeling good (hot spots ointment for my dog and ear cleaning fluid)
@@starleencooley7773 yea my mom told me about the flour trick because it packs against the wound. Only do this for small wounds but it has worked or nail trims especially. Even with my beardie when he got impatient and I accidentally trimmed his nail too far, I didn't have anything else on hand so I got flour from the kitchen and let it sit on his nail for a few minutes to stop the bleeding then wiped the excess off. My mom was the one who taught me this flour trick (she used to be a vet tech and is now a dog groomer)
If your kids are old enough you can secure it with a small zip tie and that just helps you know that all your supplies are still in there. Make sure it's a small enough one that when you open the box firmly it snaps the zip tie. They are very similar to what we use in crash carts in the hospital.
Having preassembled boxes in store for locals to buy would be awesome.
Saline, I have it in the ampules and in big bottles sold as contact lense solutions. Great for cleaning out wounds and eyes, it's a must in my wildlife rescue kit and pet first aid kit
9:00 Emily, something else to consider is an irrigating eye wash for humans (this was recommended to me by my Vet). They’re 99.5% sterile water and quite a bit cheaper than Vetericyn products!
Which brand would you recommend/did your vet recommend? Most of the eye washes near me contain lubricants along with the saline and I’m unsure if this is safe

My daughters middle school had a reptile zoo come out with some reptiles and info for them the other day. İ was super excited for her and wished i could have attended but was happy for my excited daughter. She got to touch the reptiles and explain to me what she learned. She also watches your channel with me❤️❤️❤️☺️☺️☺️
Never leave gauze pads loose. Keep them sealed in a bag to keep them clean and sanitary lol

i have a 'first aid kit' as well, but for my birds. instead of styptic powder, i recently replaced it with a vet gel called 'super clot'. it has some numbing properties as well for pain, and i've found it's not as finicky as styptic powder is with sticking because it's a gel. it is also antibacterial, but i'm not sure if reptiles bleed as much as birds, even from little wounds. birds bleed so much, especially the little ones, which is so dangerous.
interestingly enough, i have everything you've listed here, lol. i also keep syringes for flushing, small flat sandwich picks for feeding babies in emergencies, systane for dry/irritated eyes, avian insect liquidator for mites (no idea if these would work for reptiles too), KD water cleanser (fairly gouldian finch specific), chlorhexadine solution (for sanitizing and cleaning), primal defense in the blue bottle for probiotic treatment after antibiotics or gut upset, food grade mineral oil (for loosening and removing stubborn spots/cleaning), baby formula + quite a few generic meds in cases of emergency. there's more, but i think these wouldn't fall under 'first aid' at that point lol

After watching your first first aid kit video a long time ago, I made sure to have these things on hand. Having Flukers eye rinse on hand helped me keep stuck shed on a leopard gecko's eye moist until a vet could help. If you don't have one these are essential to have. Even in emergencies, it has helped me stabalize my pet till we could get to the 24 hour emergency vet which for me is a 2 hour drive.
Oral suspension activated charcoal too. If your pet eats something it shouldn't you can give the oral charcoal then head out the door to the veterinary hospital. Especially useful if there is a drive to get to a vet.
You should do a Minnesota winter prepared kit. Insulated box and heat packs. I've brought my beardie to the vet in deep Minnesota winter when it was needed
When storing betadine, you might want to put a piece of plastic wrap under the lid to keep it from leaking.

Important question! "How to best take care of your reptiles in the case of a fire?" My apartment will get frequent false alarm fire alarms going off but I always treat each one as the real deal cause you never know. With having two cats and two crested geckos trying to do things in a fast/safe fashion can be rough. What are things you would recommend for a "In case of emergency" kit or something

You DONT need a prescription for sterile water/saline! Tractor supply/big R often has it and you can order it off of Amazon. For anyone wondering out there it ranges from 5-20$ and 5ml-1liter :)

Alot of the items are great for a furry animal first aid kit too~ and the exotic vet/emergency vet that would see my bearded also sees my ferrets :)

I now have 2 leopard geckos, a starting colony of mourning geckos, and a Sonoran desert tortoise. Your channel is my favorite! I hope I can have a job like yours when I grow up!❤
If you can’t find quick stop, or you’ve run out and need some quickly, you can use cornstarch! I used it for years while I owned Guinea pigs.
If you also keep invertebrates super glue is a good item to help if there is a rupture on the abdomen. In an emergency it can potentially save the invert like a tarantula with a severe rupture.
But it's worth noting this can hinder molting in the future.
Not a reptile keeper, but I have a selection of first aid items for use on my dog. I would also add gloves, for cleanliness and also to prevent staining myself with the betadine. I would not recommend having presoaked gauze as it could encourage contamination which would make them less effective also if not used for a while they will dry out as the ziplock seal is not perfect. It may work adequately if you own a zoo with a rescue as I imagine you would be more likely to use your kit but the average pet owner with one or two animals may not need to use the betadine swabs for years. You may want to keep a way of safely restraining the animal near the first aid kit, such as a thick towel or blanket to wrap them up in as injured, frightened animals may be more likely to lash out and you don't want to be scratched or bitten. I would stick the emergency contact details to the outside of the box, and if the animal is insured keep a note of the policy details there too as you want to be able to access them quickly when arranging payment to the vet.
Here’s something else I now keep in my first aid kit - olive oil. This is in case your Leo finds some random tape and it gets stuck to their belly and it looks like it will pull their skin off every time you try to remove it. Not that I’ve eeeevvvveeeerrrr experienced this. 🤦🏻♀️
I have a human first aid kit, that has only ever been used for my dog after she had leg surgery and her foot started to swell more than expected. It's important to have wound care items handy.

I love that you included the vet business cards! One thing that I would add, particularly for individual pet owners is a pen and post it notes to write on when you’re on the phone.
If you’re in a panic and calling a vet, it can be really helpful and reassuring to have something on hand to jot stuff down on. On the one hand, it’s convenient in that you don’t have to go hunt stuff down in the middle of a call. On the other hand, I’ve found it to be really useful on the psychological side of calming yourself down, realizing that you are doing everything that you can, and feeling prepared.
It’s a little thing and it’s not directly related to the animals, but I think it’s still a good addition to a safety kit.

I’ve been binging your videos because my snake just died. He was my first and I loved him very much. I’m trying not to blame myself because it was very obvious that it was nothing of my control. I used to work with a provincial organization for authentic, vet backed, spca backed care of rabbits as indoor pets. When we were at expos, we would sell first aid kits that we assembled and they always went like hotcakes! Just an idea for you too. Especially if people can't find where to get everything etc.
Another recommendation is to keep a package of Critical Care in the freezer. If you keep it in the freezer, it is good for a year. You might have to get it from a vet (without prescription) but it works great to get appetite going after brumation, dehydration, injury etc.
Thank you for this video. A tip for people who can’t find quick stop. Corn Starch works just as well as quick stop and is easier to source in an emergency if needed.
Have used both multiple times (used to clip nails for a local humane society). Most people already have corn starch in their kitchen.
Manuka honey wound gel I have used it for myself as well as my lizards it works amazing and makes a environment where bacteria can not grow!! And it's all natural so if they eat or lick it it's perfectly fine

They actually sell Sterile Water over the counter now! At least here in Ohio. You can even get it on Amazon. I know this because we use it all the time at work. (I'm a Paramedic)
I have a gecko myself and I make sure I have £200 at all times for any emergencies to do with her. So, have now decided to make one of these boxes!
I agree about the money. When I got my first pet, that money stash was the very first thing I did. I never want to have to put a pet to sleep because of my latte habit!

Regarding the vet wrap (coming from a vet nurse), please BE CAREFUL when using it. If it is too tight, which can easily happen, it will constrict circulation and if left that way for too long it can cause tissue damage. Also, if it gets wet please remove it because it can cause issues to area being covered.
I would suggest keeping the q-tips and gauze pads in baggies too. Keeps them clean of dust and from other solutions that might get on them.

Prepared for everything, have many massive first aid kits for humans....never thought to have one for my 18 lizards!
I will say I do keep carriers/ car seats to move my biggest lizards in an emergency.
Another great thing to have I am planning on getting is a serving cart with wheels...with so many lizards it's easier to feed and give their vitaimins this way. I have a colander, tongs for veggie items and will be buying a platter to divide their specialty foods so they get a better diet. Every single thing we can do to simplify life makes it better for our scaly babies. We even have a baby bath tub for bath days.

I recommend adding power outage emergency kits as well!! Having them available to move reptiles and animals in case of power outages or storm damage!!!
It is possible to get sterile water without an RX. I got some at OTC at Walgreens. Its labelled use is for a nebulizer machine.
If you have styptic powder (also avail as a stick usually around shaving products) in your first aid box, add Emla cream (numbing) as well.
Use the numbing cream first and then use the powder (or stick) - trust me!!
If you use the styptic powder on yourself (some people keep taking bits of their fingers, well weird klutzy ones like me) it will stop the bleeding and that really helped speed up the healing process.

Great video! I made a first aid kit back when I had birds and need to make a new one now that I have reptiles again! I wish it came out sooner though, my lavender corn snake has just healed from a nasty wound that he got a month or so ago. I had to rush out to pick up care items. While it would have been best to already have them, at least now I have a good base of items to start building on. It's also good to see that my instincts were correct with everything I purchased! 💚🐍💚 Keep up the amazing work you are all doing there at Snake Discovery!!
It is very important to note that you need to use polysporin that does NOT contain any painkillers!
I really like Vetericyn+, which I think is made by the same company as the Microcyn. It's basically a wound wash and can be used as a topical treatment for minor wounds, burns, scale rot, etc. I typically use it in conjunction with betadine. I'm not sure how it works but it's extremely effective, I often use it on myself (they make the same thing for humans it's safe) if I get a cut or something and can feel a difference almost immediately. It also is safe for frogs which is really nice because their skin is too sensitive for most topical treatments.

If any of your supplies have a best before date it's good to put a list on the outside of the kit with the item name and date so a quick monthly check of your kit is easier.

If you live in a place prone to power outages, severe weather (tornados/hurricanes/etc), or you travel during cooler weather, handwarming packs, a cloth bag large enough to hold your reptile, and vet records with your name on them are all good things to toss in as well. Then you're prepared for most emergencies, not just medical.

I personally would add gloves. I would also have a folder attached to the box with the animals' vet records, expiration date on everything in the box, log of any, and all past injuries that you treated.
