So are chipmunks. I watched in shock as a chipmunk snatched an injured field mouse that was dropped by a stray cat near my porch. The mouse wasn't dead yet but this chipmunk started crunching it's skull. (I will never forget that noise) So I called my 82 yr old father and asked him and he remembered watching a chipmunk eat the head of a bluejay while sitting on the bird feeder.
Same. I like tarantulas, but I have an absolute phobia of wolf spiders, even baby ones. They’re often described as "harmless" but they terrify me. Emily:”Eww human bones no!” Also Emily: I know 2 companies within driving distance to buy human bones by name and the cost right off the top of my head.
So a couple things about what is actually recommended for OBTs: The enclosure size and front opening is fine but the screen top can actually be bad for them, they can get their toes stuck. The light is unnecessary and potentially a problem in excessive heat and lighting, you'll barely see the spider as is, the light will just scare it. Ambient temperature and light should be fine. I would also give them more substrate towards the back so that they can burrow more.
I agree you want to make kind of a slope at the back to allow the T to have a deeper burrow and replace that mesh top with ventilated cut to fit plastic other than that it looks pretty amazing!
Not gonna lie, love the tiling you put on the splashback, it has changed the kitchen so much despite being such a small detail. The lighting is also a cool effect. Know you've had it for ages but wanted to say that
The second I saw an OBT my brain went "Oh no". As someone who has been bitten by one of those fuckers (no I wasn't messing with one, I was feeding it and it ran up the damn tongs and got me before I could drop them), they are NOT for beginners, holy heck. They hurt so much, spent 2 days in hospital because of it.

Two things here. Firstly, that mesh top on the enclosure is a safety hazard. Terrestrial and fossorial tarantulas are particularly at risk of getting their claws trapped in the pinch points between the wires, as they are ill-suited to keeping a solid footing while extracting the stuck limb. This can lead to a loss of limbs, or a fall that can potentially injure the abdomen. Exo terra enclosures are pretty easy to swap the mesh on. Acrylic or polycarbonate sheet stock is easy to swap in. The tricky part is, if they're in the enclosures you need to swap the lid on, you need some sort of temporary lid in the mean time while your silicone cures. edit: You need lots of ventilation drilled in your lid material, especially as these enclosures have somewhat limited ventilation on the front, and this would be to replace mesh, which has maximum airflow. Secondly, the OBT will need more than its diagonal legspan in burrowing depth. While it's true that giving them less substrate will cause them to web more visibly, it also is a major contributing factor to stress that will make the animal more defensive. I have an obt in over twice its legspan of soil. You can only see webs at the entrance to the burrow, but it has never threat posed, and when startled, goes right into its burrow where it feels secure. Without adequate substrate depth, it's almost like the whole enclosure becomes the burrow, and so removing the lid or opening the door is perceived as a threat to the burrow. If I were doing this enclosure, I would suggest swapping out the foam background for zoo med cork tiles (much thinner, you'll have another inch of useful space inside), and to slope the soil upwards in the back almost to the lid. This is a very attractive build. With the soil level where it is now, though, this would be a better setup for a Greenbottle Blue (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens), which relies less on burrowing to feel secure and safe. I'm excited to see what you all do for your invert wall at your zoo. Larger enclosures for tarantulas, so long as you mitigate fall risk for large-bodied ground-dwelling Ts, can lend to more varied and natural behaviors being on display. I highly recommend, as you're filing out those enclosures, pick species that will have between four and eight times their legspan in space to roam in whatever directions are relevant to their lifestyles. There are many dwarf species that can be fantastic for display, and I definitely think a communal of something like Heterothele villosella would be eye catching. Of course, if you want to wow everyone and you have a massive enclosure available, a Monocentropus balfouri communal can be life-changing to witness. If you do any of those, though, you gotta find sibling slings that have never been separated from one another. Anyway, best of luck and have a great Halloween!

I can second this. Tarantulas can loose limbs to mesh lids but another risk is them chewing through mesh. @@battlebear437 All rodents will attack a defenceless prey animal if there's no risk involved, but in this instance (given that the skull was either an adult rabbit or a sub-adult hare and in very advanced decomp) it's probable that the squirrel was just scavenging carrion, probably from roadkill or a hawk kill.
I bought a dual temp for exactly that reason. Low temp will harden in seconds, but Emily seems quick enough to handle it well. A dual temp cordless glue gun will cost an extra $10-15 but it's worth every penny if you get a good brand.
I think you mentioned in a previous video that giving a snake a normal sounding name helps make it seem more approachable to kids, and I totally understand now. You got really lucky with its temperament... Mine just yeeted itself through the entire room and I had to go find it under my furniture. OBTs can be a real pain in the butt to rehouse.
As a tarantula keeper, this has to be the smoothest OBT rehouse I have seen so far... at least in UA-cam. Not that I demonize this species (and old worlds in general), but OBTs can be really skittish when they want and let me tell you it is not a pleasant experience . I love the way you both handle the whole thing although the enclosure is too big for my liking, but hey I appreciate the effort for giving him that. Keep it up! I am glad you are giving tarantulas attention in the channel because they are honestly amazing creatures.
I took Biology in college. We had one whole one on cats. There was also one for human bones, but we used fake plaster casts for that. Sorry if I freaked you out a bit. Just wanted to confirm. 😅 Happy Halloween! 🎃

@@baguettewoman1413 the mesh can be changed if they so wish, I don't use mesh personally but havnt had any issues with tarantulas that have had mesh roofs and in terms of substrate that is deep enough as OBTs will web the hell outta their house so more than likely they will make a burrow with their webbing. Other than that, there isn't any problem or error
Me, trying to explain that spiders aren't evil: Spiders don't usually bite in defense, they like to save their venom for their prey. Hannibal: I'm about to ruin this girl's whole career.
Yes! OBT's are mean. They're old-world tarantulas that are infamously aggressively, but beautifully coloured and so popular as pets. Very bitey though. Exotics Lair is a well-known tarantula-keeper who has a few of them. They're usually the most defensive and dramatic and his videos.
Beautiful OBT. It's definitely a T that should be only dealt with by an experienced tarantula hobbyist. I ordered mine online and for the most part have had much success. Most of the time I do not see her and only once on a rare occasion
PSA!! If you’re going to harvest bones make sure they are properly degreased and removed of all fat and tissue before handling without gloves or placing in an enclosure. There are plenty of ways to do this and plenty of information online but it’s really important that your bones aren’t posing a threat or smelling up your entire house!!!!!

A lot of tv shows and movies get them wrong. While, yes, they do eat nuts and berries, that is not their only food source. They’ll decimate birds nests of eggs and baby birds and eat other meat, too.
Emily: I'm still a little scared of tarantulas, but I'm trying to get over my fear by having one. I'm definitely a beginner at this. A month later, Emily asks a friend: Can I borrow your OBT? Also why you steal that poor squirrel's treasure??
i didnt know about the carnassial teeth in dogs!! i feel better about my dogs going so hard on their toy bones knowing their teeth are designed to gnaw on stuff that hard lol (also i tried to stealthily look at my dog's carnassial pair while she was sleeping and she was not super happy with me lmao)
When I heard OBT, my ears IMMEDIATELY spiked. I love your abbreviation for it. Orange Bitey Thing. It's definitely accurate for those lil bastards. Beautiful Tarantulas, but really mean. I love how you open up the box he's in and he immediately threat-postures to show how not-friendly he is. 13:39 I love the blue on his peets, though.
I'm arachnophobic but I love your channel and turantulas scare me slightly less than other spiders so I still watch (probably more listening than watching because *fear* ) because I find your videos really fun and educational
The first time I ever really knew and interacted with tarantula's was with the more common species of Brachypelma ( don't know if I spelled that correctly) and actually the Orange baboon tarantula (of course I didn't actually hold this particular tarantula) but the orange baboon tarantula really sparked the interest of tarantulas in me and they are still probably one of my favorite types of tarantulas-they are so gorgeous!!!
I was watching Tom's Big Spider vids, and he's raising his OBT as a fossorial rather than a terrestrial - a burrowing set up. I'm following in his footsteps as a science experience, and so far my OBT has been an Orange Beautiful Thing. :) Still wouldn't handle him, but it's an interesting experiment! This is especially true watching the webbing - when you open the tank, and you ruin the webbing, it's essentially ripping the roof off of their house, which causes them to go immediately on the defense. :O
Also - and I'm *not* an expert, so I would recommend reaching out to one! But I would be concerned about the squirrel skull, and the lattice-work you mentioned. It would be terrible if his toes got caught in those bits. D:
Did you know they used real human skeletons in the swimming pool scene in the movie "Poltergeist" and real human bones in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride! Creeeeeeeeepy XD
Not only would I decorate with human bones (ethically sourced) I would totally volunteer my bones for that kind of shenanigans. Being crawled around on by a tarantula in death? Dope as hell. Mad cred in the underworld.
When the OBT's box was opened I thought it already had some Halloween decorations 😂 took me a second to realise that it had made that cobweb and that cobwebs come from spiders 😂
Squirrels definitely chew on bone for the calcium. My dad tried to leave a deer skull on our porch for decoration, and it's slowly been worn away from squirrels chewing on it.
I love OBTs but am terrified to own one. I only own new worlds. 😅 Small Edit: For anyone curious, I own a titicatal albopilosum (curly hair). I used to own an avicularia avicularia (pink toe) and a monocentropus balfouri (Socotra island blue baboon). So I have owned an old world, but it didn't have medically significant venom. Well, at least based on the research I did
@@Jaidea True, but I have a young kiddo that I'm worried would possibly get a bit too curious and try and handle it. At least with most new worlds, I dont have to worry about the venom.

i love how emily can name places to get human bones but won't let ed go buy them. she's tempting fate in this one
Emily: A rabbit is prey too everything
Me: even too squirrels
Squirrels will go after rabbits? I knew they’d decimate birds nests of eggs and baby birds, but not about the rabbits
I recently found out there are “Lo Temp” hot glue guns that are designed for more delicate materials/projects. Might not melt the background 😬🤷♀️
Low temp glue guns are also a lot safer around little kids.
I bought a dual temp for exactly that reason. Low temp will harden in seconds, but Emily seems quick enough to handle it well.
A dual temp cordless glue gun will cost an extra $10-15 but it's worth every penny if you get a good brand.
Yeah but affects the strength of the glue too right? Higher temp means more safe for the spidey

I think you mentioned in a previous video that giving a snake a normal sounding name helps make it seem more approachable to kids, and I totally understand now. I'm terrified of spiders but I stopped in my tracks when you said you had a tarantula named Grace. I legit can't be scared of a spider named Grace lol

You got really lucky with its temperament... Mine just yeeted itself through the entire room and I had to go find it under my furniture. OBTs can be a real pain in the butt to rehouse.
Next level: H. maculata. Quickest spider I have ever worked with! Took me a couple of hours to finally capture mine when I first tried to rehouse him.
Yikes! Glad it's okay; I've heard tarantulas can easily be mortally injured by drops :(
As a tarantula keeper, this has to be the smoothest OBT rehouse I have seen so far... at least in UA-cam.
I feel like Id be down to donate my bones for an enclosure. It sounds weird to say but I would
I'd support it

Apparently, yes.
Yes, it's normal in various animal biology degrees.

Every time I hear OBT I think “Ms Lord Have Mercy” and then I cry.
Thank you for the content!

Emily: Orange bitey thing
Me: orange bitey thing?
Yes! OBT's are mean. They're old-world tarantulas that are infamously aggressively, but beautifully coloured and so popular as pets. Very bitey though. Exotics Lair is a well-known tarantula-keeper who has a few of them. They're usually the most defensive and dramatic and his videos.

PSA!! If you’re going to harvest bones make sure they are properly degreased and removed of all fat and tissue before handling without gloves or placing in an enclosure. I'm just justifying my being scared of them...
What? They're scary..
A lot of tv shows and movies get them wrong. While, yes, they do eat nuts and berries, that is not their only food source. They’ll decimate birds nests of eggs and baby birds and eat other meat, too.

Quick Fact: the acronym OBT originally meant “Orange Baboon Tarantula”!
“Feeling cute.. might bite you later Idk” LOL
I'm arachnophobic but I love your channel and turantulas scare me slightly less than other spiders so I still watch (probably more listening than watching because *fear* ) because I find your videos really fun and educational
Such an adorable little OBT.
I love how Emily knows...with no hesitation... exactly where to get human bones
“And the best part is, is that we are going to use real bones!”

Human bones? No it’s disrespectful.
Tarantula- What an amazing colour. Nature rocks. Emily you are my hero. You are fearless. Love your “spunk”.
Not only would I decorate with human bones (ethically sourced) I would totally volunteer my bones for that kind of shenanigans. Being crawled around on by a tarantula in death? Dope as hell. Mad cred in the underworld.
"I'm in the midwest and we all look like a bunch of dead fish"-oh my gosh that is so true (also same) 😂
When the OBT's box was opened I thought it already had some Halloween decorations 😂 took me a second to realise that it had made that cobweb and that cobwebs come from spiders 😂

Squirrels definitely chew on bone for the calcium. My dad tried to leave a deer skull on our porch for decoration, and it's slowly been worn away from squirrels chewing on it.
The coyote’s spirit: -_- what did my bones do to deserve this
I love OBTs but am terrified to own one. I only own new worlds. 😅
Small Edit: For anyone curious, I own a titicatal albopilosum (curly hair). I used to own an avicularia avicularia (pink toe) and a monocentropus balfouri (Socotra island blue baboon).
