    • @rdizzy1
      @rdizzy1 5 років тому +42

      As long as they make sure they are older pennies, dogs and cats can easily get zinc poisoning from post 1982 pennies, even just 1 penny can poison a cat or small dog.

    • @Milo-hi5so
      @Milo-hi5so 5 років тому +3

      Julie Reis what about breaded dragons could they easily swallow this?

  • @Icewind007
    @Icewind007 5 років тому +5

    Additional tip for the pennies: If you find 1982 pennies, you can tell if they are copper or not by dropping them on a hard surface (like granite) and the copper will make a distinctive melodious ringing sound and the zinc ones will make a more clanking sound. You can make sure you hear the sound difference by dropping a pre and post 1982 coin.
    Also, copper pennies are slightly heavier (3.11g copper to 2.5g zinc) if you have a scale precise enough.

      @Enderguin58 The youtuber Sulfuric acid isn't really that dangerous to skin. Worst case scenario you'll get some pretty dry hands and a little stinging if it stays on too long. Its not like it will eat away at your flesh or anything. (At least not unless you're soaking your hands in it for hours at a time) Looking at the safety data sheet for pH down it looks like its only about a 10% concentration of sulfuric acid. That is pretty safe all things considered.
      Look up a youtuber named Nile Red. He has a video of him dunking his hands in a bunch of concentrated acids and you can see that they don't cause very much damage.

    • @SkyeRequiem001
      @SkyeRequiem001 5 років тому +23

      @Enderguin58 The youtuber It's really not very dangerous, dry hands are probably as bad as you'll get with dilute H2SO4, maybe have your skin peel if you're using it a lot. If you have particularly thin or sensitive skin it might be problematic, but that's the same story as a lot of "toxic" plants, in which some people have to wear gloves or they'll get a bad reaction and others can handle them freely without ever noticing an issue.

  • @filthyanimal

    Hey just a tip! Don't rinse filter media in the sink water, get a bag of the same tank water and wring it out in that bag's water and put it back (not the water, it's poopy, dispose of it!)-- if you rinse it in the sink you're killing good bacteria with chlorine! You really want that good bacteria more than anything else :x Otherwise you run the risk of cycling the tank and hurting the fish more. I've never used these filter packs you show, I personally can just wring out sponges/filters in the tank water occasionally and it's been good for years with the same media. n.n; Though I might try adding one of these to one of my tanks to see if there's any visible change! It's definitely a nicer alternative to the disposable ones which are wasteful and also throw out good bacteria.
    Also I'll have to try the penny trick for my crestie. He's really bad about pooing in his water :|

    • @kgrilley895
      @kgrilley895 5 років тому +1

      I just came to say this as well.
      I usually rinse my media out in the buckets of waste water from my tank. Using multiple buckets if needed.
      Even if they are on a well, the running water could flush enough of the beneficial bacteria out to mess up your cycle and cause it to crash.
      That being said I love your channel. It shows that you try to do the very best for your animals.

      lol same here except hognose and ball python. I got a hognose about a month ago and my partner just brought home his new ball python last weekend. We got both from a lady who is downsizing her "collection" (I don't particularly like that word because they're living creatures, not like...stamps or pokemon cards). My hognose wasn't happy about the presence of cats, and the python didn't like being in the rack with the other pythons (who all seem perfectly happy in there, but miss thang was like "nuh uh! Get me out of here.") So we're trying to give them both living situations that they'll like better.
      So far, my little guy seems to be thriving. My guy's new little lady is doing a massive grump, though.

      Feels bad man. I wouldn't push it too much, but snakes take very little room (like really, my barely 5 inch turtle takes up waaaay more room than a corn snake or a ball python would) and they are pretty cheap to care for. I understand your parents tho. Mine are the same way with me, lol.

      Try to start with something small and calm, so long as your mother doesn't have ophidiophobia, a few good experience should convince her that her statement is silly(though no guarantees she will admit it). Also worth noting; if your place is large enough, dedicating a separate room to reptiles would make it very easy for her to visit without even seeing the snake, sometimes you might even see the enclosure and not realise there's a snake there, depending on the species and your specific snake. Hope this helps!
      PS. Based on what you said about how your mom said she "wouldn't visit" if you had one, I am presuming you don't live at home. If you live at home, getting any animal without your parents being ok with it is a bad idea.

    Carbon actually isn't beneficial for the aquarium aside from avoiding bad smells (as if you got dying plants it will give off that 'fish store' smell). Purigen is that much better in comparison as it serves as a better surface area.

      "Copper toxicity is a type of metal poisoning caused by an excess of copper in the body. Copperiedus can occur from eating acidic foods cooked in uncoated copper cookware, or from exposure to excess copper in drinking water or other environmental sources."
      That last part would make me nervous about doing it.

    • @kteztum5139
      @kteztum5139 5 років тому +35

      Copper isn't that dangerous in form of metal for animals. Shrimps and snails are really sensitive to copper cause of their blood. But simply by putting copper in water nothing will happend. You would need to put current through copper so it can ionize, to disolve enough copper to kill even shrimp. In low doses nothing should happend altough I wouldnt reccomend using copper bowls/tanks if you are keeping snails/shrimps/crabs.

      Copper pipes are used to deliver water in a LARGE % of homes in North America. So by proxy you have already exposed them and I don't think there has been wide spread deaths reported of any creatures. However when you have stupid people run low Ph water thru lead pipes, AKA Flint, MI, well you know the out come of that.
