  • Ahh the glorious Chongqing hotpot, it's something everyone needs to try at least once in their lifetime! It's hot, spicy, mouth numbing, and if you haven't ordered at least 2 kinds of intestines, you're doing it all wrong! See what my parents thought of cow stomach, duck intestines and beef tongue...
Ps. For anyone learning Chinese out there, I was pronouncing Mao Du wrong this entire video 😂😂 it should be máodǔ not màodǔ

Frankly, I don't like "rubber band" either. I don't eat all the weird stuffs when I am having my hotpot. I always keep teasing my friends who dip in the pig brain that they would catch mad-pig disease. :-)

    • @blacksagegrandmaster7699

Also, the pizzle stuffs have always been on the restaurants' menu. They are just used to exploit people's stupid belief that it could help boost their hormones and sexual potency (which is completely false). I don't order these at all. Just eat your normal meat and veggies for your hotpot. The weird stuffs are just to fool those new to hotpot.

Hi Amy, most impressed with the humorous heroism of yr mum and dad. My mum's from Sidney, and raised me in tasting all sorts of foreign food, so I hope this has remained a cosmopolitan Aussie tradition, and we're all so lucky you shared this great moment of adventure, for cultural curiosity and love of new experiences' sake!
Can't have too much of this, nowadays!
As for western cultures, some ought to know that tripes, and ox tongue, etc... have been used for centuries in Scotland or France, and Italy too, and considered top notch delicacies, except we don't drown them in chillie broth, witch is a hazard for some people's health... Some of that tradition could stem from those bits going off a little fast, in semi-tropical climate, as a preventive antiseptic...
Thanks for a delightful share in your adventure, and stay well and sound for more fun in traveling!

Looks like an awesome feast! A bit of an insider tip from a Sichuan native on the cooking time: a good rule of thumb for cooking the tripe is “七上八下” (7 ups and 8 downs), meaning that you dip it in the pot for 1 second and pull it to the surface for 1 second to cool, and repeat that 7-8 times, more if it’s thick. This way it doesn’t overcook and stay tender. (Almost like sous vide). Similar technique can be used for duck intestine too. You can also tell the cookedness of tripe & duck intestine by how much it curls. You want it to curl up a little bit but not completely. The ideal texture is a tiny bit of chew and a little bit of crunch. Any types of meatballs the rule of thumb is if it floats it’s cooked, unless it’s the factory made kind with lots of flour added or a tofu skin, since those tend to float the whole time. 😄

the longer you cook the tripe/intestine/tongue the chewy they become so that's why they taste like rubber. If you cook just at the right time, they are in between a little chewy and crispy, which is the best state.

Lol love the hot pot to hot potty joke
Btw, should use a “hot pot spoon” especially for parents, looks so difficult with just chopsticks, easy to lose the meat in the sea of pot

I feel you are an adorable girl, trying to get your parents to try all the weird foods from China. Your parents are cute as well.

A big round of applause for your parents, especially your mum for trying the Chongqing hotpot. Most foreigners would decline this and that but your parents were extremely sporting and tried everything that you recommended. Thanks for posting and here's wishing you and your parents a wonderful and safe time in China.

    Hey Amy!
    This video is awesome.
It's gladdening to see such open-mindedness in cultural exploration. As shown in how you're appreciating the more 'different' types of chinese food!
    Keep it going :)

    你爸爸明显不太喜欢毛肚啊,其实七上八下就可以了,他烫得太老就变成橡皮了。很高兴你喜欢中国文化!
