This was a game I knew nothing about. None of the hype, none of the trailers, none of the controversy and not a single review. Yes I was in my senior year and living under a rock with nothing but classwork on my mind just to keep my head up. Frankly, this was one of the most enjoyable experiences I had in that extremely tough year. I think this shows how negative mindsets going into games kinda dooms the experience before you even boot the game up.

It feels so good to have people finally acknowledge that Watch Dogs, despite its flaws, was pretty damn good. If it weren't for bad marketing with impossibly high expectations, this game would be remembered as an absolute classic. You can tell that the developers put their heart into it, and they had nothing to do with the bad marketing. I hope this video encourages more people to appreciate this game for what it is.

    • @rahulsar2030
      @rahulsar2030 4 роки тому +42

The fact is that people are already starting to recognize Watchdogs as a classic. Watchdogs 2 was a improvement to 1 but it lacked many features like mini-games and reputation system. Now as Ubisoft has taken a new direction to Watchdogs: Legion, people would be more acknowledging Watchdogs 1.

    • @andrewaustin8135

I don't know. I just replayed it recently after not playing for years. It starts out fairly strong, sneaking through the baseball stadium. Then it all goes downhill from there. It's not terrible, but it really doesn't feel like it has its own identity. It feels like a weird mix of Splinter Cell Conviction/Blacklist, Assassin's Creed, and GTA, and it never really comes together. The hacking feels more gimmicky than anything.
Then there's the jarring ludonarrative dissonance. Supposedly he's an anti-hero vigilante, but he robs people's bank accounts, threatens witnesses to conceal his identity, and he has no problem wiping out entire gangs, but he absolutely CANNOT kill the gang leaders, for some reason. The whole thing is a bit of a mess. And that's not even getting into the boring, cliche "killed family member" motivation. All in all, it's at best a mediocre experience.

Rahul Sar idk I prefer not to have reputations systems in games like this, it takes a lot of the fun out of free roaming. You can’t go on rampages or God forbid accidentally hit a civilian with your car or people start calling the cops on sight. Then to get your reputation back to even the middle ground have to waste 30 min doing a bunch of side missions

ShadowFiend898 To be fair Aiden does the same thing is them. He complains about how the system monitors every thing but uses the system for his own good. Dedsec while still flawed for stealing took the system down themselves. And the reason they got pissy is because unlike Aiden Pearce they are borrowing processing power from the public. If a hacking group says and talks shit about them they could loose followers, which means less hacking power which means less of a chance of control for taking down ctOS

Hope it was worth the wait! Three quick things. Firstly, this video used to have a NordVPN sponsorship in case you're wondering about the weird edit at the start. As far as I knew, their recent incident was nothing to worry about. But until I know enough to make a solid judgement, the segment is cut. Sorry for the inconvenience. Secondly, if some of the clips look odd, it's because I had to recolour them myself. My Shadowplay has decided to be colourblind. Thirdly, it's worth mentioning that I think Watch_Dogs' reputation has gotten worse with time, which I would have liked to bring up in the video. In 2014, the nukes were indeed dropped, but there was also a considerable group who quite liked the game. Over time, I think the louder words of those who hated it have stood the test of time and created a sorta negative feeback loop. In multiple ways. That's just an observation, but I think it's a common phenomena with "disappointing" games, especially Dark Souls 2.

Dark Souls is an easy game since all you have to do is play the boss twice and remember the patterns.
Once you know the bosses its only a matter to remember what to do if A or B happens.
Watchdog 1 has terrible mouse control, and i do not play with a controller, even than, running in the open air with 4 ennemies able to shoot at you when 4-5 bullets kill you ded that are 💯 accuracy to perform the John wick melee kill is much harder or difficult to set up than beating any DS boss.
The game is easy if you just abuse the time slow and stay behind cover.
Which, is the total opposite of that.
If you want to prove me wrong, simple. Record an uncut video of you going trough a fight heavy mission without a silencer (or even with it) but since ur so gud and play Dak Suul you should do it without a silencer. I know this is an older video, but one thing you might've messed up on: coming out too early and scaring the potential criminal away doesn't award reputation because the public has no idea that the criminal was, in fact, a criminal. They hadn't committed a crime yet, and for the most part, only you knew that they would. However, if you intervene in the middle of the crime, it's obvious to the public that you saved someone because the criminal was waving a gun around. The rep system shows how the public views you, not how you view yourself.
Mind you, I'm not saying that the rep system is good. It's incredibly annoying. But people often get confused with the crime intervention scenarios.
Also, I heard was that the original graphics are possible to unlock on PC, with some file tweaking. For some reason, they disabled it, whether that be for performance or just so that the consoles and PC would be identical.

Its obvious they put a huge amount of work and dedication in them(I was kind of blown away by the detailed city in The Division), they are mostly polished enough for open world games, but f*ck me, its just a looter shooter with no sense of completion after you beat its "campaign missions". If you hold the arrow key a longer time, the wheels then get a bigger angle and you feel the car turning more dramatically. It takes time to get used to it (when I started to play i thought it was a delay about the input). In GTA this movement is more regular, you tap the arrow key and the car do a more intense move to the side, it's easier to do quick small corrections, but it's less realistic. I think more and more people find out about Watch_Dogs after the fact and they don't really care about the pre-release claims, so they get to enjoy the game as it is. I have played it in 2019 as well, it was a stand out game for me, and I have only heard about the release scandal only after I have spent 100 hours in Watch_Dogs.

I'm really glad someone has finally gave this game a second deep look, it surely got more hate than it deserved, yet it was quite an original game with its dark take and new concepts, I even prefer it to the 2nd entry.
Though I have 2 remarks to make about the video:
    - The surrender-blackout mechanic does exist in the game, you can perform it up till Act 3, after that the cops directly shots without notice (I believe it is tied to the story but i forgot the details of it).
    - The E3 graphic settings does exist hidden in the PC game files, the early mods just activated them back. And by the latest updates of these mods, I can argue that the results looks fairly similar if not better than the demo (except from explosion effects which were better on the demo)
Again, thank you for this enjoyable video, I hope you will give us a same quality ones for other overlooked games such as AC Unity, Watch Dogs 2 and plz one for AC Origins.

The intro of this video is brilliant. You made the right decision by using "Collateral" in your intro.
6:19 Tbh, first half of 8th gen felt like a remaster of 7th gen to me. 8th gen would be 7th gen with a prettier face and higher resolution If PBR material, volumetric lighting, checkerboard rendering (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X), and TAA weren't a thing.
7:26 For some reason this sounds exactly like Dutch Van Der Linde's infamous "We need money." quote.
8:42 You can still take enemies down even without utilizing QTE in chases, just time it well. Ubisoft should've completely removed hacking QTE and risked "criticism" from new players. Looking forward to the day someone manages to remove hacking QTE from the PC version of WD1.
12:59 The handling is alright in my opinion, the handling can sometimes be a bit twitchy and unresponsive.
Also, the sense of speed is fantastic considering it's not even a racing game.
15:00 _"Aiden is a man of _*_focus,_*_ commitment, and sheer will, something Damien knows very little about."_
I have no idea why Ubisoft didn't show some John Wick style gameplay in the marketing material alongside usual social hacking.
Also, John Wick came out after this game came out. And VC made his first WD1 JW style gameplay video before the first John Wick released, but one of his 2017 videos popularized this playstyle.
17:55 WD1 is one of the few open world games where it's possible to detonate a grenade mid air by shooting it.
28:43 I would've agreed with you before finding Lucky Quinn's audio logs. Turns out he was the one who funded ctOS program.
30:53 -Police- E3 Bandwagon who should have moved on a long time ago instead of whining about WD1 not being a "GTA Killer", those people hyped up the game with unrealistic expectations and decided to do a 180.
I'm glad that WD1 found it's own fanbase and most of the E3 bandwagon moved on since then.
37:54 Criminal convoys could've been made even better if you were given an option to speak to the NPC targeted by the bad guys and take him/her to a safe place (and maybe get a conversation that sheds light on why he/she was targeted to begin with).
Also, have only one criminal convoy happen per 24 hour in the open world (and unlimited, obviously).
48:48 This circular search zone system could've worked if the number of circles of doom were reduced to a maximum of 2 and restricted to the borough where the crime was originally committed (with the freeways being exempt from these circles of doom)
50:56 WD1 became more popular since you posted this video because WD fanbase consists of people who never stopped playing and players new to the series.
Also, WD1's multiplayer is the only multiplayer I really enjoyed.
51:54 T-Bone wants to know your location.
53:52 This is why I consider you to be one of the best retrospective videogame reviewers alongside Raycevick.
56:51 So, Raycevick was doing some voiceovers for Ubisoft before he started reviewing games?
57:41 It's possible in the final game in Act 1&2
    ua-cam.com/video/bWf8QalPP7w/v-deo.html
1:03:44 The pre-crime system demonstrated in this mission should've been applied to free roam as well, would've made profiling NPCs more interesting.
1:03:55 So, shooting an NPC in the nose isn't lethal.
1:09:41 At least you get to keep the collectibles instead of mindlessly visiting 50-100 places for a checklist. Also, WD1 implemented audio logs pretty well, you can listen to them anytime you want without going to a pause menu.
John Wick's world reminds me of WD1 where anyone might be a fixer willing to kill Aiden Pearce at any moment (assuming you are playing with internet turned on). Tbh, Ubisoft should have given us the option to have AI controlled hacker fixers attack Aiden every once in a while.
Watch Dogs 1 is one of my favourite video games of all time despite the overblown criticism it gets from "most people". Thankfully I wasn't on the hype train when it was released and only learned of this game's existence when it was already out for a while.
"most people" is a small group of people that managed to change the general consensus without letting people give the game a proper chance.
(people on the internet does not equal people outside the internet and the ones who are simply enjoying the game). WD1 has plenty of fans, but they aren't as vocal as the ones who do not like this game.
Ubisoft (publisher) and Ubisoft Montréal (developer) aren't the same entity. *Ubisoft Montréal* is the developer who made the game and *Ubisoft* is the publisher that created the hype surrounding the game and created unrealistic expectations through its overambitious marketing tactics. Ubisoft deserves the backlash for how they treated the then brand new IP, not the developers. Ubisoft saw this as an opportunity to set this game as a "GTA killer" while the developers wanted to create a unique open world game with the idea of controlling a city through hacking. Developers work hard only to be given an unrealistic deadline by the publisher, and end up creating a game that falls short of expectations.
Ubisoft had 4 games in their 2014 release schedule: ACU, AC Rogue, FC4 ,and WD1. While Rockstar had a remastered version of GTA 5 in 2014. Rockstar involves *every studio* into one project at the risk of *bankruptcy,* Ubisoft does not do the same since *diversifying* resources into different projects reduce the chance of bankruptcy even if one game is a disappointment. Ubisoft operates like a *business,* treating games like *products.* WD1 *maybe* would've had a chance against GTA if Ubisoft launched no other games during 2014, and a better development schedule was used with every studio working on WD1.
No, this game would have *never* beaten GTA 5 even if we were handed the E3 2012 build as the final game. E3 version's NPCs were completely scripted, same goes for NPCs in the final game.
GTA will be more popular than any urban open world game made by other publishers because GTA is a monopoly in the urban open world crime game market at this point. GTA offers something for everyone and the stories are simple enough to be understood by anyone (which definitely helps boost sales). And the fans of Rockstar games have the power to turn facts into opinions and opinions into facts.
WD1's PS4, XB1, and PC versions contributed 66% of the total sales, meaning PS3/360 versions should've been canceled in the first place. This game had a $68 million development cost, a large amount of that money went into building a new game engine, a brand new WD universe, and the game was developed for 5 platforms at launch. WD1 made around $400-450 million *assuming* the average price was around $40-45 per copy (it would be foolish to assume a $60 average price due to the tainted reputation at launch, a heavy discount was obvious) with 10 million copies sold by December 2014. The game needed around $140 million (3.12 to 3.5 million copies sold) to break-even, marketing costs are usually equal to development cost. The game would've still turned a profit even with 66% of the sales. ($268 to 300 million)
GTA 5 was developed at a cost of $265 million (development cost was over $137 million) and made $1 billion in 3 days and sold 16.7 million copies assuming they were sold at $60 per copy (no reason for R* to discount the most hyped game of the year in only 3 days). It needed 4.42 million copies sold to break-even.
GTA 5 developers had a mature engine (RAGE evolved during GTA5 development) and only had to build off of GTA IV. It was made for 2 platforms at launch and they spent a lot of time adding to HD universe, something GTA IV devs already built from the ground up. While WD1 devs almost had to start from the scratch. FC's AI system, Driver SF handling's tweaked version, and parts of AnvilNext were used for WD1's Disrupt.
AC4 Black Flag *apparently* had a $100 million budget (found on the internet, might not be true) compared to WD1's $68 million. AC4 was built off of AC3 and simply built a new world with existing tools.
WD1 and NFS Carbon are on the same boat IMO.
Both games were hated by a certain group of people at launch, the ones still come back to "correct" and shove down their opinions on the people who liked these games. In NFSC's case, people who joined social media back in 2005-2007 are the ones who come back to express their dissatisfaction over a dead horse. In WD1's case, it's the E3 2012 hype crowd.
Both games didn't live up to expectations (since the expectations were sky high).
Both games somehow managed to be on my favourite video games list even though they shouldn't be according to that "certain group of people".
Both games are actually good but are treated like some kind of "one of the worst games of all time" and stand between 75-80 on Metacritic.
WD1 deserved a better publisher than Ubisoft.
If you decide to do a retrospective of Watch Dogs Legion, please remember to point out the absence of train in that game.
*UPDATE (4-1-2024):* Whitelight spent around a minute criticizing WDL's lack of trains in the WDL 3 Years Later video.
10 million copies sold is impressive by itself (many games couldn't even reach half of that), but I still think that WD1 was a disappointment in terms of sales, it should've sold at least 15-20 million copies to justify the hype it created. Many newer games from the late 2010's and early 2020's sell nearly twice that figure. Ubisoft is secretive about its sales, so I'm not sure if we'll ever know if WD1 reached 15 million copies over the years. We're heading for a future that is very similar to what WD1 and Person of Interest demonstrated, so WD1 SHOULD have been more successful.
I wish that you brought up Person of Interest in this video. Excellent video!

I get what you mean by becoming John Wick, the cover vault kills, gun melee, stumbles and rolls make moving quickly and closing gaps very, very satisfying.
I’ve felt like WD and WD2 has always struggled with weapons. The marketing and sickass takedowns makes me think WD1 was supposed to have pistols be the main tool, but instead you get ARs, shotguns, and snipers.
WD2 suffers from this way worse - it’s clearly supposed to be a breakfast club hacker teen movie, but you can whip out an assault rifle and gun down dozens of cops, despite your goal literally being good PR. That, and the addition of the taser and having electric traps and melee being explicitly nonlethal makes it clear to me that combat was supposed to be limited. In my mind hacking is necessary since the taser has one shot and takedowns take time, but instead I can whip out a shotty and delete people.
Ubisoft’s execs clearly had their fingers all over WD combat. Should’ve let WD1 be John Wick. Should’ve let WD2 be a feel good nonlethal teen movie. Both would’ve been great, but AAA will be AAA. Dunno what Legion will want and fail to be.

I'm so glad you actually went into detail with the game and spoke about Alone. That was literally my favorite mini-game and I probably played that (and Spidertank) more than the actual game itself. There was so much to the atmosphere and mechanics of the game that I enjoyed that I seriously considered getting Watch_Dogs for my Steam account just so I could mull through the story until I could play that trip again.
What was really cool was that the game never forced you to actually succeed in Alone. After I beat the trip half a dozen times or so, the next time I booted it up I just sort of wandered around. I had just completed the first sector, and when the night turned to day, I started running towards the next one until I stopped and just felt like going the other direction. Funny thing is, the game's entire map is free to explore in Alone. The city is full of empty cars, and the dark zones are full of robots, but aside from that the map is completely devoid of life and activity. Drive to any part of the city and you can reach the other end undisturbed. In a game full of hyperactive technology and people living their artificial lives, the world just feels so atmospheric and melancholic compared to the rest of the game. My favorite thing was driving my car up the stairs and onto the train tracks and just driving all the way around the island rails. I was even able to use that to my advantage at one point and wheel myself really far into the dark zones and kill a bunch of the robots from above before jumping back down and freeing the zone.
Between that and the uniqueness of the invasion mechanic (where other players look like pedestrians to you, and vice versa, spread out in an entire open world map) I wonder if we'll ever get anything like that in a AAA setting again.

It really throws the idea out there that the man who is somehow able to hide in plain site despite being dressed very conspicuously now has no where to hide!

I feel the game is less dark and very dramatic, fast paced. It has some dark themes but it really goes nowhere or never goes far enough to truly be dark, dwelling on the line of edgy and dramatic. Watchdogs 2 may have been more comedic, but it went all the way so it feels more coherent when you play it. Watchdogs brings up a lot of stuff like human trafficking but it feels more like. Side note then tied to the story. Movies like the dark knight are dark because they have themes of terorism and stuff but they go somewhere, the story is tied to those stuff. Watchdogs falls to do that and instead tosses it away or rushes through it. Human trafficking could’ve made for a very dark story. Imagine instead of Nicky being captured by Damien, she was caught by the mob and sent to an auction. That would’ve made Aiden going after Iraq and Quinn, more coherent and feels like there’s an immediate threat

Part of me wants to make a Watch-Dogs-ish game where, when you’re hacking into something, your phone actually has some sort of Unix-y command line shell (probably bash (common in Linux) or zsh (I think macOS uses this)) that you have to use to actually hack, while you use (say, the mouse on PC) to defend yourself while hacking.
Well, on another note - if you want some good hacking, there is a PC game called Hacknet that focuses exclusively on the hacking - there’s no open world - you can’t even see what your character looks like, just a network of computers to hack and a clientele of people who want you to hack them. To do so, you use a combination of both a graphical user interface and a Unix-like terminal.

There's actually quite the variety out there if you sniff around enough, but nobody's really managed to package both physical presence and cyber access together into a sandbox where both prove equally engaging.
Quadrilateral Cowboys and Else Heart.Break() both play with hacking and interacting with the world, but the former has a very small scope and the latter lacks the awareness to notice when you're really messing with it. NITE Team 4 covers a number of authentic techniques, but again lacks the physical presence that more personal attacks like social engineering and refuse interception (dumpster diving) so much fun. Off Grid looks like a next possibility, but I've noticed it's been sitting on my wishlist for quite some time without releasing, so I don't know the if/when on it yet.

I played this game earlier this year or at the end of last year.
I usually wait a couple of years before I buy and play a game because by then it usually has a goty edition, the bugs have been fixed and some walkthoughs exist for puzzles that are not intuitive to solve.
And I enjoyed the game a lot. It was like most open world games fraught with side missions that look similar to one another, but the city and the ambient was amazing.
I've never been to Chicago so I can't tell, but the lighting of the city was pretty much like the lighting of cities in the north part of the planet I've been (Paris for example), so I needed only launch the game to leave the tropical city I live and be in chilly, windy and rainy environment.
The game has a lot of heart, it's sad the marketing machine behind the launch tainted this all so much. Try the drinking game with the local drunkards on each part, you forget you're playing watchdogs and get transported to some other game.
And that happens with so many mini games of the game, you get transported to so many places and forget you're on the game, it's like buying some 10 games on a bundle.
Also I learned to play poker on this game so there is that.

When i played through this game for the first time i tried to play it as stealthy and pacifist as possible. I honestly never knew you could play this game like John Wick, as the story implies stealth.
But let me tell you, the sense of accomplishment you get by infiltrating warehouses full of Fixers without being seen or firing a shot once is amazing. That constant pressure of moving and hacking your environment to not get seen needs tactical thinking (lures are for noobs) and that is what i remember this game for. That is also the reason why my reputation was always fairly high, giving me absolutely no benefit (except that pedestrians make photos of you).
But there is another part that i find both good and bad about this game. That is the Audio Logs.
Audio Logs can be found by many people and even Aiden himself has made some. They give the characters a great background and help to build the world much more in-depth than it has. Like Aiden giving reasoning and an explanation about his psychological manipulation. And to be honest, these were kinda missing in the review (excluding the ones from the QR Codes of course). And the side missions where you track down a serial killer or human trafficking are things that i wish would have been discussed.
Their biggest flaw is simply that they are optional collectibles. Why would you make the thing that helps the player immerse in the world of Watch Dogs an optional collectible to get? The history of Quinn, Maurice, the bunker and Raymond Kenney himself, hidden behind some collectible Audio Logs that only few people even care to check out. I love them, but the fact that they are just optional make them kind of a bad addition.
Still, Watch Dogs 1 stays my favorite one of the two, simply because of the vigilante, story and setting. Watch Dogs 2 was a bit too colorful for a world where humans get sold, everyone gets spied on and that data also gets sold to the highest bidder. The dystopian yet almost realistic feel of the first one is what makes Watch Dogs for me.
