  • The Ta33 is really cool, and checks a lot of the boxes of what most people seek out of a ACOG.
But then you go shooting and realize some seriously big gaps in capability.

I love how we are coming full circle again. First it was cool to have an acog and rmr on top
Then everyone was like “that’s too high and 1x is more important” and we went to red dots with magnifier
Then “that’s too complicated just get an LVPO”
Then people were like “1x on the lvpo isnt as good” and mounted secondary red dots
Meanwhile the NV bros and giraffe operators are going unity mount height
So now we are back to acog (much mor bomb proof than most lvpo) and RMR at unity level height.

Right ? This guy is a serious breath of fresh air. No gimmick, or rather, his gimmick is sincerity and approaching concepts that a lot of people would scoff at as too high end or unapproachable for the average shooter, and he really knocks those preconceptions over like a steel circle at 600yd with his 11.5” AR. It’s actually a great metaphor for what he does, it’s unlikely but it’s doable and quite impressive when done well.

@@mattcomchoc2957 Only other has been a ta31. Didn't like the nonexistent eye relief, didn't spend much time with it. I also have an old 3x PA prism. I still own it and use it, but it's not my favorite.
I really don't get lost in the ta33, maybe because I've only ever ran a ta33 with a rmr piggybacked, so I've trained myself to know when to switch between the two based on different situations. Maybe it's because I don't try to mount it as far forward as possible. Not sure, but never really noticed it unless I'm literally trying to move (like brisk walk/run) and shoot while looking through it.
I've never felt claustrophobic behind my ta33. When I first put it up to my eye I was actually amazed because it took up so little of my vison. I feel like you actually have really good awareness of everything around you while looking through the 33. You can then choose to put your focus on the optic and shoot. Almost like shining a flashlight when the sun isn't completely down. You can still see everything and make everything out, but whatever you point the light at is going to be a little clearer.
He was correct in that it sucks for scanning for a hidden targets. He's correct, the circle dot sucks, chevron is what I have.
The 33 is the first prism to sell me on prisms. But as a package, I feel like the red dot is mandatory and a mounting solution should be available on any modern prism (looking at you PA).

I recently aquired a TA33 with a piggyback RMR, specifically for a 9" .300blk. I was contemplating a Red dot/magnifier combo but believe there are more benefits to TA33/RMR:
    1. I have a zero for subs(RMR) and supers(TA33)
    2. As you mentioned, its a decent option for shooting under night vision with the RMR being nice and high(and farther foreword than on a TA31).
    3. A Red dot/magnifier typically has a better FOV, but I highly prefer the "hands-free" method of changing magnification.
You have a point that its not great for scanning and target identification, but I think thats a very marginal trade-off if you take advantage of its niche capabilities(especially if your primary optic is intended to be the RMR).

Your videos are consistently top notch, hitting on very cool topics with a perspective we almost never get from UA-camrs. You delve into so many practicalities of shooting and using optics that others don’t , and I can’t stress enough that it makes your content stand out. When you said (if I recall) that you are completing an engineering degree, it suddenly clicked for me why your content is so different; YOU are so different than many “gun guys,” and that’s not a knock on them either.
I would humbly request a series of videos on AR-10 / semi auto .308 platform optics, as well as the viability of using something like an Elcan Specter labeled “.223” on an AR-10 with m80, as the ballistics inside 600yd seem fairly consistent. It seems to me that the same way using 77gr ammo on a .223 /55gr BDC changes things up but doesn’t outright make it useless, the same could hold true for using said optic on an AR-10. Maybe this is a selfish request and I need to just shut up and go shoot myself, er… go and shoot the gun, myself, but I would love to hear your take on this as someone who is wrestling about what optic to put on his upcoming AR-10, and , like so many others (I think), I have more optics laying around then guns, and am torn between something like the Elcan, or an aimpoint/ EOtech and vortex micro 6x magnifier / EOtech g45 5x magnifier. I will surely just try all sorts of stuff when it finally arrives (I guess some companies are having issues sourcing .308 barrels at the moment), but I haven’t seen you do too much content outside of your 5.56/.223 rifles and your beloved baby 9mm subgun. Maybe this is a dumb request, in which case just go ahead and ignore all that.
Love the content, keep pushing, keep at it while keeping yourself grounded in your non-UA-cam life, and I believe you could really become quite the voice in this domain. There’s room for more than we have, especially people who bring something new to the table, which you do. God bless.

I appreciate that man, really, means a lot.
I will be delving into the AR10 field soon. (it's pricy) though I probably wouldn't use the elcan 4x. My desired niche is more of a SASS type when vs a battle rifle

    • @victordogeman
      @victordogeman 2 роки тому

I probably wouldn’t take the Elcan off my SOLGW 13.7” NOX pin/weld a certain UA-camr inspired me to seek out because I love the combo so much, but when something pops up in my mind, I kind of blurt it out. I’m sort of stuck between the idea of a reflex / 5 or 6x magnifier and possibly the 407c/507c canted dot, but I’m also debating the idea of the EOtech 1-10, or maybe even a “proper” 4-16 style scope with the side dot and not even bothering with an LPVO for 1x. I’ve never owned an AR10, only a socom II, aka the most expensive shitty gun I’ve ever experienced, genuinely incapable of tight groups at distance no matter what I did. I’ve already used the DD5v3, albeit with a strike eagle, and the difference in accuracy was astounding (vs the socom II), so I basically just wanted to get some input from the gun toting engineer who has long distance shooting spaces on deck to try out many things. I agree they’re pricy, but my philosophy is I have a small pistol, medium pistol, large pistol, and so I’m looking to mirror that in my rifles. The socom II was the large rifle, and it was a disappointment. Now that I saved up enough Pennies and am merely waiting to receive said AR10, the thought is constantly on my mind as to what I should be looking to throw on it. My philosophy is that it’s going to essentially be a bigger, meaner version of the 13.7” 5.56 (as a 16” 7.62x51), and so the question for me is basically how much magnification do I want to bother putting on it, and do I want that magnification as a flip-over magnifier, or a built in aspect of an LPVO. I’ve seen you run this calculus for your 5.56 guns, but I’m curious if anything changes when you run it as a .308. Cheers again, both for the content and the replies to a random fan who really doesn’t matter at all.

This is just my opinion, but I feel like the reason the ACOG is so bright is because the tritium is housed inside the scope and always appears to glow as a result.
I have an ACOG from when I was in Afghan... I mean, uh, a long time ago, and the tritium finally died in it. I had to pull every bit of the tape off to get a comfortable reticle brightness in daylight.

Primary Arms ftw. I’ve got several of their optics & they seem to only be getting better at designing & building them. I love my Eotech & Aimpoint glass but PA is doing a great job of making optics not just good for the money but good, period.
I’ve never found a Trijicon optic that was substantially better than a competitor’s to justify the price. Whether it’s the ACOG, MRO or a variable power scope there’s somebody else doing as good or better for less money.
Trijicon’s pistol sights are my favorite though. I used their 3 dot tritium Glock sights for years until micro red dots became a thing. Now it’s Ameriglo’s with a blacked out rear sight, which are made by Trijicon.

This is the first video of yours I have viewed. Thank you for the content. Very informative and much appreciated. I have subscribed. I'd like to ask a question somewhat related only due to the discussion of ACOG. I have both the ta33 as well as the ta31f. Admittedly, both were purchased in my firearms/optics lifetime when I bought more before I researched prior. That said, I've taken some distance classes with the ta31f and had to adjust the zero to meters for an accurate bdc. As my distance experience has grown Ive tried to more fine tune the bdc. With chrono readings and viewing others feedback, I found the "sweetspot" to make the bdc as "true" as possible. I have not attempted to run the ta33 out to any longer distance than 300 yards. Do you or any of the other viewers have any suggestions as to ideally zeroing at 100 yards versus meters? I have read the ta31f is a hard meter zero to be on. Is the seem true for the ta33? With the small chevron i realize longer distances may be pointless to see. ta33 suggests specifically a 62 grain cartridge. Not sure what rounds you're running. Any feedback about what distance others have zeroed and what loads they run is appreciated.

I’ve used the ta33 with a piggy back rmr for a decade almost now and idk I never thought the eye relief was that bad it is a 556 optic so recoil isn’t a issue at all I mean I wouldn’t want it on a 308 rifle or anything that has actual recoil but for a ar15 it’s very good at what it’s there for 500 meter and in minute of man accuracy , I have a bunch of AR15s setup with different optics my leopold 1-4 with a rmr45degree that is probably my favorite setup for it’s eye box and light gathering and I feel much more precise while playing at range, but if I was going to war id take my acog rmr setup. If I was going Night shooting it’s going to be the eotech although my buddy’s aim point is pretty damn nice also it’s a toss up between the two to me. Aim point is probably the better option though I haven’t had a problem with my eotech but I have another friend who had to send his in for dying .
It would be fun to try these other Acogs not sure I like that small of a field of view as this one showcased here but I’m sure if you got use to it you could use it very effectively.
Glass clarity is so so so important for low light shooting though and you get what you pay for it sucks haha except with SWFA haha those or one of the only exceptions I’ve personally experienced in the optic market where you can get a accurate dialed scope with top tier glass quality for $300.
If they even still make them or they or the same as they were a decade ago now.
Take it all with a pinch of salt …

Thus far I like the TA33 and PA3x the best of my optics. My elcan OS4x is up there as well, but it's kind of cumbersome to use since the eye relief is so tight.
