    The ACOG is one of the best all-around combat optics ever produced. They have been around for 30 years and will still be around in another 30 years. Most of the ACOG haters have never used one - not really. The clarity and field of view are unparalleled. The eye relief is blown out of proportion, in my opinion. You simply cannot compare the image quality, clarity, field of view, and bdc to any 3x/5x magnifier and most lpvo's set at the 4x level. And don't get me started on the durability. Hands down, one of the toughest optics ever made. Are they for everyone? No. But in my opinion, they are excellent for their intended purpose. Paired with a quality offset red dot, you have a fast, reliable, and effective package that is capable out to 600 yards.

    One of my favorite channels out there. I personally have the TA01 and totally love it. Yes it has some things that aren't ideal but at the end of the day if I had to take one rifle out the door with me into the "end of times"... It would be my pick for a variety of reasons. I disagree. Trijicon has come out with models like the TA50 that weigh less than 6oz. Most variable optic scopes are going to be around a pound, sometimes more, not including the mount. You still get clear optics and a fair compromise between multiple ranges all at a little weight.

    The ACOG for the lower powered magnified optics available today is in its own tier IMO. You covered it well as to why it is such a great optic and solution for many different platforms and uses. Agree on the higher powered magnification LPVOs available today (4 years later even more options now) being superior for most cases/uses in terms of functionality and improving your rifle. I'll always have an ACOG on a build, have spent a lot of time behind that optic. The piggyback RMR is a gamechanger and certainly extends the use of that optic for most. Great shit man, gonna be deep diving some more!

    Honestly the limitations of the small obj diameter on LPVOs and the inherent obstacle of increasingly insane zoom ratios (a 1-8x has the same zoom ratio as a 3-24x....) that degrade image resolution unless you dump like Credo 1-8x28 or NF money into the problem, means to me the ACOG will always have a place as the best general purpose optic.
    No it can't do 1x type CQB that well or go beyond 4x, but neither can LPVOs really.

    • @Terran0va_Plays

      Let's not forget the acog is generally half the weight of an lpvo and has fewer moving parts. Fewer parts, fewer things to break.

    • @tv321123
      @tv321123 2 роки тому +1

      A Credo 1-8 is going for what a ACOG sells for, As well as a 1-8 VCOG on sale. Would handily be better than a ACOG at CQB, retain the advantages of a ACOG at range, and go out more than 4X. Cool if a TA31 works for you...But the optic with notoriously crap eye relief is not for everyone(especially when the 1-8 credo/vcog have such great eye relief). And the TA31 requires the most training compared to a LPVO or a red dot.

    • @DD-hz3ts
      @DD-hz3ts 2 роки тому +4

      @@tv321123 the credo 1-8x28 goes for $250-300 more as base cost, not including the mount which is another $80-200
      It's also nearly a pound heavier when said mount is installed
      The credo has a place but it's on a DMR imo
      There are lighter LPVOs like the tango MSR 1-6 that offer a sidegrade to an ACOG in exchange for weight but the huge FOV, light weight, batteryless operation, and light transmission in itself offers a bigger advantage than 2x more zoom.

    • @caseyf2453

      @@tv321123 I have the trijicon 1-8 and while I love it on my AR10, it’s an absolute pig. Put an offset on the acog and you have a very handy and versatile setup going with not much downsides. Idk about this training issue you talk about. The acog was made to be dummy proof with an intuitive bdc/ranging reticle. The credo has an moa/mil crosshair reticle set up for dialing which requires way more training to effectively use.

    • @tv321123
      @tv321123 2 роки тому +1

      @@caseyf2453 I agree about the weight handling. I have both a set up with a 1-8X VCOG, A TA31, and a few TA33s for a reason. At least IMO despite the excellent field of view, and good handling of the TA31, I just can't agree it's the 'best all around' with it's worse than G33 magnifier eye relief. I've handed my TA31 set up to experienced shooters, including a marine that was deployed with a M16 & iron sights; and most of them immediately hate having to shove there face a inch away from the optic. It has a reputation for bruising eyes and hitting glasses for a reason as well as making shooting from difficult positions infinitely harder. And a FFP reticle requires the same little amount of little training the basic acog reticle dose(with the benifit of the entire zoom range)...That is the point of the FFP optic, the hit points are consistent across the magnification range. And why the Army and marines are issuing FFP optics to regular troops(and the SFP to army special forces).
      At least IMO. The great eye relief is worth the sacrifice of the weight, of the VCOG/CREDO or the field of view TA33, for a 'best general purpose optic'

  • @Mike-ls1yc
    @Mike-ls1yc 2 роки тому +4

    I bought my first ACOG just about 15 years ago, but it sat in the safe for probably half of that time as I moved through mid and high end LPVOs.
    A couple weeks back I put it on a 12” SBR and shot out to 500yds and instantly fell back in love with the ACOG. The simplicity, effective BDC (I need to zero at 50 for the SBR, but the rest lines up nicely)
    I think you are right, there are better “do everything” options… but if you want a light weight rifle that can reach out to 4/5/600 yards than this really shines.

    Man with how strong the competition has gotten, im curious how the ACOG fairs in 2023. Seems like for the cost the PA 5x, vortex, and vector paragon micro prisms is worth a shake. Perhaps comparing and contrasting for us would be worth the time

    • @jessesando8582
      @jessesando8582 Рік тому

      I can tell you from my personal experience (which might not be worth much) I have owned several PA prisms, vortex spitfire gens 1 and 2, and ACOGs.
      The PA offerings are very competitive for the money. Glass isn't as clear, and they are not nearly as bright as the fi-optic ACOG models, but still very good for the price point.
      The spitfires have VERY unforgiving eye relief compared even to the acog, they are Chinese made and cost more than the PA models. Also, their adjustments are very coarse (I had one, could have been defective, but a brand new Spitfire G2 5x that was adjusting at like 5moa per click, no joke.
      All in, the PA is great but if shot side by side the ACOG you know where the money went. They are a great compromise if you are set on going prismatic but don't want to shill out the cash, IMHO.

      I started doing run and gun biathlons this year (2024), and my ACSS Aurora ACOG has been my go-to carbine optic. I absolutely love LPVOs for their feature set and capabilities, but the ACOG is hands-down simpler to use while on the clock during/under stress at least compared to mil-dot/MOA scopes. The fact that I have less task-saturation during a stage where I'm already physically and mentally exhausted from running 8+ miles is a GIANT plus.
      I believe the eye-relief problem is blown out of proportion, and can be easily mitigated with some dedicated training. I never have to turn the optic on or off, I never have to worry about dialing elevation for a target or returning that dial to zero, it's a lightning fast transition to the top-mounted secondary, and the unit is durable as hell.
      Insert comment on "get-gud" topics that we've all heard before - at the end of the day, the best optic is always going to be the one you train with.

    I am ordering the M4 ACOG RCO M150 from optics planet. I know the bullet drop reticle is calibrated for 62 grain bullets from the 14.5" barrel, but if I shoot slower 77 grain bullets how badly do you think that will affect say the 300 400 and 500 stadia accuracy? So small I won't be able to notice or significant? I have read in various blogs that I could just do a 100 yard zero with the point of impact about 1.2" high and that should help a lot.

If neither the ACOG or the Vudu immediately jump out at you as the one to get, then wait, get more time behind them, and possibly consider other optics. There's nothing worse than spending 4-digit money based on YT reviews (good or bad) only to regret it after you test your buddy's optic and like it more.

    For anyone on the fence about an ACOG or LPVO. LPVO has some glaring drawbacks. Weight and durability of the ACOG are unmatched. Also the 1x even on the expensive LPVO's suck so much that people have been using offset RMR and leaving their LPVO fixed at x3 or x4 rendering the LPVO main selling point moot. LPVO illumination requires batteries and their POI shift at their max magnification is an issue. ACOG is all you need for mid range dominance. The ACOG keeps it simple stupid. Also practice with the bindon technique and you got yourself a solution for short range acquisition. The only downfall really is eye relief.

      See this complaint a lot about ACOG’s not holding zero or getting a random flier in your group. As per the army’s technical manual for the RCO/ACOG there’s a work package that outlines “tapping the turrets” to ensure internal prism moves when adjusted. Also outlines if you over adjust the turrets where the prism starts to bind it will damage the internal mechanism. Every time I ever made adjustments I’d ensure I tapped the turrets and never had issues once. It’s a mixture of operator error and misinformation that gets spread around due to lack of knowledge on the equipment.

    LPVO people still run an Offset dot, so what’s the appeal? It’s wildly heavier and less durable than The ACOG.

    I absolutely can NOT watch a Lefty Shoot. KUDOS for you overcoming your handicap. Great scenery in your video. I CRINGE whenever I see a Lefty shoot. It is impressive that you can overcome your handicap.

      I did though. It's in the video. But it comes with tradeoffs. I also don't really thing the eye relief is a downside as it comes with upsides.

    The rugged durability of the acog is legendary. The LPVO is not even close. So for the shooter on a budget and cannot afford these prices for multiple optics I would say the ACOG TA31F is probably the best choice for me!
