Came here after immediate buyers remorse after buying a tritium acog/rear rmr setup last night that hasn't shipped yet. Thank you, Brass Facts for easing my concerns!!
I never liked LPVOs and when I switched to an ACOG a few years back I was blown away by the huge FOV and amazing clarity. It actually changed my shooting ability instantly when it came to engaging targets past 80 meters. After doing a few rifle matches with it the shortcomings of it when used in "CQB" distances were obvious and somewhat difficult to work through even with training. After a year or so ago going to a top mounted RMR (initially to give the rifle in question some type of ability to shoot passive under nods) I realized that it had "unlocked" the rifle from being great at intermediate and long distances and shitty at short distances to basically good at everything. Like you mention in the video, it cannot be easily expressed how amazing it is to be in mid firing string to be able to simply raise or lower your head an inch or so and be able to quickly go from 1x to 4x and vice versa. I'm a believer in this setup and I feel that if people can get over the short eye relief (100% a training issue, NITCH can solve this) then this would be an actually great "do it all" setup for 90% of people out there who need a rifle with magnification.
What people seem to overlook about the eye relief is that if you mount the acog all the way back on where the rear irons would usually be, you can get a pretty comfortable cheek weld while still having good eye relief. As for the rear irons, just move it in front of the acog, it’s a backup sight anyways, no reason it should take precedent over your main sights

I think this is the most practical set up for an asymetric/guerrilla warfare scenario. The added durability over something like LPVO is worth the tradeoff given assumption of little to no logsitc support. The reduction in weight and bulk also plays well into the paradigm of non-conventional warfare which prioritizes disounted mobility, evasion, flexibility stealth, surprise and long term independent small unit operations over firepower, armour and reliance on tech.
Really solid look at an option I think that many are quick to overlook. I sold 2 Razor 1-6’s and replaced with ACOG/RMR combos. For people that actually move over terrain with their carbine’s adding 25+ ounces to the top of your rifle is ill advised (and I don’t care how many “hit the gym” responses I get). The ACOG is still so special because of the 4x capability it adds while not adding a ton of weight or sacrificing durability. The RMR solves for the big drawback to the ACOG by adding a true 1x dot. Hard to beat. Awesome content dude. Do more ACOG stuff!

How heavy is a trijicon? I had a trijicon issued to me but also had some other available optics and eventually started using an aimpoint and kept a quick detect magnifier on my belt.. I don’t remember the acog being some lightweight optic. I remember being kinda hefty but it’s probably been 10 years now since I’ve used one. I think people over look a lot of LpVOs on the market like Eotechs vudu and trijicons 1-4. If I remember right the trijicon with a mount came in at like 21 ounces. But don’t quote me I don’t pay that close attention, I’ve been running aimpoint T2s and Eotechs for well over a decade and I couldn’t tell you what those weigh and I own multiple of them. You should hit the gym though, regardless of the heft of your rifle, anyone traveling terrain or shooting for hours a day or shit I’m the field for weeks or on a 12 op that involves infiltration, raiding a compound then exfil will tell you shoulder, grip, lower backs upper back, legs and glute strength training is a must
Mr Facts, I’ve been working my way through your catalog and I’ve gotta say, you’re putting out solid content. No herpy-derpy BS, group think, or recitation of WRONG internet gun garbage. Dude, my hat is off to you man. It’s great finding little gun channels that are just getting going, and haven’t ruined themselves with the self-important “influencer” vibe. I work patrol in a rural town on the Texas Gulf Coast. I run a Primary Arms Acss reticle ACOG with a holosun solar 507c (the rmr footprint solar dot) with eotech style reticle. It does what i need when i dont have time to screw around.
Another note is that a piggybacked RDS can be used to find a target at long range and then drop your head into the ACOG/scope if you're shooting from a bipod where a 45 degree offset becomes unusable.
I couldn't get used to the eye relief on ACOGs but I understand how this combo can be very handy. If Trijicon made a top load RMR then this could be an even better option.
@@BrassFacts This is actually the combo I just started messing with- except that I have the TA110 LED ACOG. It is pretty tall, though. Might work even better with the 3x TA33 since it's a bit lower. What I've found works pretty well to mitigate the "chin weld" issue is to can't the rifle slightly so that the mini red dot ends up in front of my support side eye. With the 3.5 ACOG it still requires a slight lift of the cheek weld, but its more akin to going from absolute to lower 1/3 cowitness.
@@EverydayMarksman hey love your blog and channel. I too am running an acog/RDS combo. I recently sold both a TA33 and a Vortex Razor 1-6 so I have some experience with a variety of options. My current setup is a TA01nsn with a 507c in an offset arisaka 1.93” mount. The TA01nsn provides me with a BDC matched perfectly with my 14.5 and 62gr M855. I spent 7 years and two combat deployments staring though a Ta31 and I definitely prefer the crosshair reticle over the chevron. And by using the 507c I don’t need to use the BAC concept with the bright chevron. The height of the 507c in the Arisaka allows me to just slightly cant the rifle to make shots easily. To me it’s the best of both worlds. I have redundancy in my sighting systems. The accuracy of the 4x with BDC crosshair and the speed of the eotech style reticle with excellent battery life. And all at a reduced weight/profile over the razor.
@@pinfalt7750 Thanks! It's funny how it seems like we're all kind of looping back again. LPVO with an offset is the current rage, but there's definitely a weight penalty for it. I think we're on the verge of seeing a swing back towards compact prismatic optics in conjunction with small RDS.
Great video! I have several setups and they each have a use case. My TA31 Acog has an RMR, and I really like that setup for shorter builds (12.5 inch). For longer builds I like a LPVO with a top mounted (12 o'clock) RMR. What the Acog/RMR setup shines at is creating a small tough quick configuration that will probably survive anything I can throw at it.
Part of the eye box problem can be corrected by moving the rear iron sight to the rail in front of the acog which allows you to move the acog back another couple of inches. Also if you don’t like the chin weld for the higher rmr, you can run it on a 45 degree mount and put it in front of the acog but behind the iron sights. That’s how I run mine and it’s works great.
I've been running this setup with a DR sight (pre-RMR) for at least 15 years on an A4 then M4. I found it very usable and practical for a fighting rifle, but can see where the drawbacks become more of an issue in competition. On reflection, it may be that since the military configured rifles are already heavier than the modern AR styles, they are slower to use so the slightly slower ACOG/RMR setup isn't the rate determining step. In any case, I think your review is fair and well thought out. I also know exactly where this was filmed, though I usually use the west side rather than the north. On my SPR I run a 33 degree (IIRC) offset from my much larger, higher mag scope, and while I think that also works very well, it isn't enough better to make me want switch completely. Honestly, the GWOT and then the 3 gun boom really left us with an embarrassment of equipment riches. As long as you buy good quality for durability, including mounts, I think it will all work if you put the time in to know your chosen setup well.

Most setups now a days are excellent, and even budget options are really quite good. Most of the gear debates seems to center around the last 10% of optimization
@@BrassFacts Pretty close. I was training as an engineer for a few years before changing my mind and going into uniform. Later, I became a medic and went overseas for a while. Now a PA. Been around long enough to have started with revolvers and A2, and remember when variable power scopes were fragile and unreliable. So glad we got past that! Life is so much better this way.
Rmr to aimpoint acro adapter plate from primary weapons systems paired with the new aimpoint acro with good battery life will make the acog and piggyback red dot combo my new favorite setup. Just waiting on my backordered acro. Gonna take my rmr off and see how it goes. Hopefully i can stomach the fov difference.
I LOVE the 1.5x acog with accs reticle. Like a red dot with built in range finder. Just enough magnification to be a little better at 100-150 than a dot. Little enough magnification to not hurt cqb
I think the acog is still hands down the best it's been proven and it's durable I love tritium I love fiber optic and the piggy back dot is perfect I'm a fan boy of the rm04 on the acog total end of the world set up with no batteries
I’m unsure why your video is this good per your sub count but, good shit man. I recently started using the RMR on top of my ACOG and I like it. However, I was previously running a lot of RDS on a carry handle like a Delda guy back in the day. So a high up RDS doesn’t feel weird. Now, with that said I already had the RMR and the ACOG and only had to buy a mount. I don’t know if I’d have done it otherwise. Plus, it looks cool. And as flannel da- *uhh* Garand Thumb says, looking cool is important. All great remarks regarding pros and cons. Take care.
4x32 ACOG with a Scalarworks Leap mount plus a RMR/HS407c on top is only about 14.5 ounces. That is actually insane when you think about it. Good video.
One thing nobody ever talks about really is the irons on some of the acogs. I'd like to see a ta-01 with the rear ghost ring removed and just the tritium front irons used inside 25yards and see how it would be.
I actually considered doing this over buying an elcan, but i decided that having a consistent eye relief/cheekweld for both 1x and 4x was worth the extra weight and downsides to the prism 1x on the elcan. I also like the elcans reticle a lot.
@@BrassFacts yeah its def not bad. I feel like hop just has a preference for red dots in general. I know the specter has less forgiving eye relief than lpvo's and isnt as fast as a red dot but it weighs less than most lpvo's and definitely can take a harder beating which is important to me since mine is on a SCAR 17.
Do both, specter dr elcan with rmr, good 1x 4x for day and then the rmr works with nvgs for if you want passive aiming. Also make sure you buy a rmr with a colored reflective coating and if it's made of plastic you buy one of those metal shields for it. You could buy an enclosed rmr instead for ur elcan too that would be perfect.
No one ever takes the castle into account. Everyone discusses tactics and equipment from a battlefield (invader) perspective. If you’re home, (castle), you can use the AR-15 with the Nightforce when they’re at 500-meters, then grab your AR-15 with the ACOG when they’re at 300-meters, finally, grab your AR-15 with the EOTech when they’re inside 100-meters. Most guys have all 3. Most guys are defenders - not invaders. I definitely understand there are a myriad of reasons to ‘Bug Out’. You and Hop do a great job reflecting ’Bug Out’ tactics and equipment. Thanks for all the great VDOs.
The battery powered acog bumps the RMR a wee bit forward so its nicer for NVG use. I personally use the Browe 4x32 BCO. Brian Browe used to work for Trijicon and pushed them to make a battery version. They didnt do it so he left and did it on his own...then they went and made the battery powered one. Its the best version of this IMO. The light sensor/firmware adjusts the brightness based on what the reticle is aimed at (rather than ambient light where yiu are. (Plus they make it in 7.62x39) Only downside is that the piggyback mounts use shield rather than RMR footprints...so you hafta use a glock mos plate JB welded onto the mount if you want an RMR
I use to have that combo, then I gave my acog to my grandpa for gratitude for storing my rifles for when I moved out of state, my current rifle now just keeps the RMR.

I've been a kool-aid drinking ACOG cultist for years and just discovered the joys of the ECOs...since buying one over a year ago, I've added two more RMRs to my stable of ACOGs. Another "piggy-back" config that's ''the tits'' is the Elcan & Docter RDS...I recently acquired the latter and mounted it on the former. IMHO, the Elcan/Docter config is far better than my Elcan/Trijicon RMR kit and can describe the difference between the Docter's clarity (@ distances past 50 yards) and Trijicon's is like night and day...I was shocked by the Docter's ability too clearly out to 200 yards.
I went with an ACOG with the ACSS reticle after trying my buddy's and thinking it was like having a cheat code on the rifle. I decided to go with a Holoson on a 45° after talking to many guys that had ran them and RMRs and said the Holoson were just better now. I like being able to maintain the same cheek weld to use both. I can just twist my rifle a little bit and I'm good out to 50, straighten back up and move out to 300+ with the ACOG. It's almost too easy to put rounds where you want them.
Not only does it still work, but it's objectively superior for its intended application to the Specter DR. Which if anyone needs to know why, I'll write a lengthy reasoning if prompted.

Great vid, the only thing stopping me from buying one is the battery. I have heard in the RMR that you need to completely remove it (lose zero) to swap it out. I'd love to try out an acog topped with the new aimpoint acro p-2
I’ve had my Acog/RMR for over 6 years and have replaced the batteries once. The RMR is ambient light sensitive so storing it in a dark place vastly increased battery life. I personally think there’s nothing that beats it. MOA on my dot is about 1 MOA. Not sure how you came up with over 3.
Very nice video. I have something for you to try. Maintain your cheek weld & rotate the gun so the top mounted RMR is in front of your non-dominate eye. A Trijicon rep said this was the design intent for placing the RMR so high. It works but takes a little practice to switch eyes.
Good video. I commented above but it fits here better. I have that setup for rotating and zeroed at 50 meters: point of impact 2” left at 100 meters and would obviously increase with distance. I figure that’s what the Acog is for. The height is the more significant factor.
Love my TA31 with a Holosun HS507c on top for CQB. Added a REM ACOG add on illuminator to the TA31 so I can see the Reticle in low light situations. No need to buy chemlights anymore. Works great when indoors in a dim room looking out into bright sunlight. Also eliminates the need to replace a dead Tritium. Just turn it on to the lowest setting #1 and boom... A nice soft glowing Reticle.
Not having the budget for an ACOG, I found much of what you've talked about regarding it applicable to other decent, but less expensive 3x-5x prisms such as Burris, Primary Arms, etc.
One of the things to keep in mind is that you get what you pay for. With an ACOG, you aren't paying for glass quality, other prism optics can have glass just as good or better; you are paying for durability. The ACOG is a TANK, and I can't stress it enough. I ran an arms room in the army and never once came across a broken, or even damaged, ACOG. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the RMR. Despite it also having a reputation as a tough optic, every single duty rifle I've seen with one mounted piggyback on an acog was broken, either glass shattered or otherwise non-functional. Keep in mind these are duty rifles that grunts treat with zero respect, ymmv.

Just got done watching a movie called the outpost. Pretty decent movie. Most m4s had the Acog on it in the movie. In a end of the world shtf scenario I think the accog is what I would want on my rifle.
I love Trijicon Dual illuminated OPTICS. If I could only own 2 optics fir 556 . It would be TR24 & TA45 with Red Triangle. I very much enjoy no batteries.
in Florida an ACOG w/RMR has advantages over an LPVO. There aren’t hills or much wide open terrain so high magnification isn’t so necessary. It’s scrubby so unless you’re in the middle of a cow pasture high power is not as necessary as the desert. Light weight, a high RMR for night vision with enough magnification and field of view for most purposes just works.
Good shit. I think a b5 sopmod enhanced stock would help you out a bit when usin the red dot. Gives you a bit more, I use one with my red dot on a unity fast mount. I think they're pretty close to the same height.
Good video my friend has an acog for his ak so super nice for 100 to 400 yards not so easy for close up but with the opportunity to install a red dot on top of the optical makes the acog an even better tool
Thanks for the video, I like lpvo acss but my trijicon was great just couldn't id as will. And didn't feel like I was accurate enough to get a coyote at 300ish 556 16in acog, where I had got one with 308 3-9 Walmart scope at the same range.
I'm getting old, almost 40 and can't see. So 4x just isn't enough he'll my 1-6ffp isn't if shooting 6in plates past 500. My 11in pws can do it with my nabor shooting
I’m glad you made this video I think that the glass on this is so great that it’s easier to get hits at distance than some 6x scopes the 4 power by it’s self is not great at speed but with a 45 degree red dot it is plus a cantilever mount lightens my rifle where my Razor makes it weigh as much as some small moons!!!🤯🔫👍🏽
Pushed back TA31F with Larue RCO mount Plus Holosun 507c ACSS chevron RM35 mount was my initial set up but then I tried Arisaka Offset canted sights with 509T and found it more useable as the offset redot isn’t so up in my eyes when tilt and aim. Using non dominant eyes with vertical offset red dot takes some time to master but it could as well as get fast as canted sights in the latter set up. In the end, I favored non traditional appearance but much more comfortable and quicker set up than what I used in the marines with BUIS
yep, whatever works. Most things in 2021 are quite good/work well. We're just discussing the last 10% of optimization. So a lot of user preference there. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I prefer the TA02 battery acog with front rmr mount with enclosed emitter rds. Never a problem with high rise rds. Way btr imo...shots are no harder idk why ppl think they are. If we were talking AR10 then yes. Good vid though brother
Algorithm comment. I've always had a huge love of ACOGs, but I've always struggled at 25 yards with them. I'm eventually going to buy one; you've talked me into trying out an RMR with one
it'll take a bit to get use to. For the first range trip or two, it wasn't really working for me. Slow shots, bad presentation etc. But eventually it clicked.
@@bass779 you'll be dealing with a chin weld. The break through for me was not letting myself just float my head (just touching), but instead to lightly press it into the stock. Similar to a normal cheek weld Recoil management seems to be key here to get similar performance.
Acog with the rmr on 45 * degree offset solves all issues. Shoot with 200 yards easily with rmr on 45 degree with fast follow ups. Took rmr off the top and used trijicom on 445degree mount. My favorite set up.
Get a Weapon Outfitters Kram Optic Spacers for ACOG, it'll solve your eye relief issue + it'll give the RMR more height, so you can have a more heads-up shooting position and it would be much easier to passive aiming under nods (of course this depends on the mount + spacer height that you get)
I was running a 4x32 with offset T1 for years, last year put a Vudo 1-10x on. This year going back. Just can’t beat the combo and superior glass of the ACOG.
I got the ta31ecos model and keep getting scope kissed by the rear buis on the top. I decided to switch it around a little by moving it forward a couple of notches.
As we move to higher red dot mounts, this seems more relevant than ever. T-Rex arms brought up a good point that the piggyback/offset red dot can effectively be used as a primary optic - just like we would use a red dot and magnifier. I don’t think the RMR is the best tool for the job anymore if you think of it as a primary optic. The Holosun dots have clearer glass, easier to change batteries, are more durable and have Eotech style reticles with a solar panel. Alternatively, if you already have the bombproof ACOG on your rifle, you can accept some risk and put something like the SRO on top that has the clearest glass on the market. You’ll sacrifice reliability for the red dot, but your 1x experience will be better. What are your thoughts?
I don't think they're the same as primary optics. Especially the piggyback is to high for a good cheek weld, reducing consistency, recoil management etc. The observed effects are pretty minor, but they are there. The holosun might be better in most aspects, but its generally a pretty poor NV performer, so well depend on if that's on your to do list.
I had an ACOG + RMR combo. I tried the RMR both on top and on a 45 degree offset mount. I ended up ditching the RMR entirely while keeping the ACOG. I found the BAC, Bindon aiming concept, to be superior for me than the RMR in either position. The RMR on top prevented me from getting a good cheek weld which made it inherently slower than just using the BAC. The offset mount allowed for a decent cheekweld, but I found that it wasn't any faster than just using the BAC and having to twist the rifle wasn't working for me with how my stock grips my shoulder.
My ideal do all setup runs a 10x44 SWFA with a top mounted dot in 18" 6mm ARC, and a Sightmark LoPro underneath. (Budget, baby!) All kidding aside... if NV aiming isn't a primary concern, try using a SeeAll Night Sight on the RMR mount above your ACOG. The Mk3s have a super clear delta reticle, and doesn't obscure nearly as much of your field of view. Plus, no batteries, and I've yet to actually break one.
I’ll have to share valuable insight as I’ve done before. When transitioning from Acog to rmr, don’t lift your head, keep your head in the same position as when aiming through the Acog, then 45 tilt the rifle and pick up the rmr with your left eye, both eyes open. Drastic difference
@@BrassFacts if you are missing at that range, you might need to re visit that. I can do it out to 100 meters and plenty of people do it that I have trained. on you tube, Trex arms is a more popular person than me and he has video of doing it. It isn’t difficult so if you’re having trouble, you might need to go back to the basics and start slow. Any questions, feel free to ask

Had I to do it all over again, an Acog with a DPP offset would have been it. I am speaking about my main rifle. My bedside / shtf rifle. I have other rifles, with other setups... did not like the lpvo (odd huh?) and prefer the Eotech and Sig Romeo5. In the end... the Acog is nearly indestructible and proven.
If i knew my lpvo would never break, id take the extra weight all day long. Id even take an mpvo. Given that even in 2024, scope durability is still a question mark, its hard to not take an acog once the boog hits.
Great content. Not really arguing the point cuz I don’t have as much experience as you but I’m interested in these options. Is a red dot with a magnifier really that much more costly and bulky? I would think weight and cost would be about the same?
it's the bulk. having a thing hanging off on the same is awkward. you can get the fold to center thing, but that forces you to use a giraffe mount which not everyone will care to use.
I've thought, for some time, that setup looks about optimum. I would want some reinforcement "ears" on either side of the RMR for durability. I wouldn't want to destroy my RMR when it got caught on something...which is bound to happen, often. The only setup that I think could be comparable, if not better, in some respects, is an ELCAN with the throw lever for dual magnification. I suppose people will comment on this as to which setup is better, and why. I'll look forward to that.
LVPO is a simpler training option? With the shift in zero a different magnifications I would say the ACOG is the simpler training option. Good video tho
LOVE your content. Not the typical fast guy competition shooters who regurgitates the same stuff everyone else says. I still have an ACOG+RMR rifle. Outdated? Perhaps. Still fully functional. Will I get some sort of 1-6 with an offset RMR or Holosun later? Probably.

I think this is the most practical set up for an asymetric/guerrilla warfare scenario. The added durability over something like LPVO is worth the tradeoff given assumption of little to no logsitc support. The reduction in weight and bulk also plays well into the paradigm of non-conventional warfare which prioritizes disounted mobility, evasion, flexibility stealth, surprise and long term independent small unit operations over firepower, armour and reliance on tech.

Really solid look at an option I think that many are quick to overlook. I sold 2 Razor 1-6’s and replaced with ACOG/RMR combos. For people that actually move over terrain with their carbine’s adding 25+ ounces to the top of your rifle is ill advised (and I don’t care how many “hit the gym” responses I get). The ACOG is still so special because of the 4x capability it adds while not adding a ton of weight or sacrificing durability. The RMR solves for the big drawback to the ACOG by adding a true 1x dot.

How heavy is a trijicon? I had a trijicon issued to me but also had some other available optics and eventually started using an aimpoint and kept a quick detect magnifier on my belt.. I don’t remember the acog being some lightweight optic. I remember being kinda hefty but it’s probably been 10 years now since I’ve used one. I think people over look a lot of LpVOs on the market like Eotechs vudu and trijicons 1-4. If I remember right the trijicon with a mount came in at like 21 ounces. But don’t quote me I don’t pay that close attention, I’ve been running aimpoint T2s and Eotechs for well over a decade and I couldn’t tell you what those weigh and I own multiple of them. You should hit the gym though, regardless of the heft of your rifle, anyone traveling terrain or shooting for hours a day or shit I’m the field for weeks or on a 12 op that involves infiltration, raiding a compound then exfil will tell you shoulder, grip, lower backs upper back, legs and glute strength training is a must

I work patrol in a rural town on the Texas Gulf Coast. I run a Primary Arms Acss reticle ACOG with a holosun solar 507c (the rmr footprint solar dot) with eotech style reticle. It does what i need when i dont have time to screw around.
I think what most viewers don't appreciate is how much energy went into setting up a range like that...carrying that steel? Good work!
Another note is that a piggybacked RDS can be used to find a target at long range and then drop your head into the ACOG/scope if you're shooting from a bipod where a 45 degree offset becomes unusable.
I couldn't get used to the eye relief on ACOGs but I understand how this combo can be very handy. If Trijicon made a top load RMR then this could be an even better option.
The modern version of this would probably be the 3.5x ACOG + a holosun 507. Top load battery, better eye relief.
But I'm a simp for the ta31.
@@BrassFacts This is actually the combo I just started messing with- except that I have the TA110 LED ACOG. It is pretty tall, though. Might work even better with the 3x TA33 since it's a bit lower.
What I've found works pretty well to mitigate the "chin weld" issue is to can't the rifle slightly so that the mini red dot ends up in front of my support side eye. With the 3.5 ACOG it still requires a slight lift of the cheek weld, but its more akin to going from absolute to lower 1/3 cowitness.
@@EverydayMarksman hey love your blog and channel. I too am running an acog/RDS combo. I recently sold both a TA33 and a Vortex Razor 1-6 so I have some experience with a variety of options. My current setup is a TA01nsn with a 507c in an offset arisaka 1.93” mount. The TA01nsn provides me with a BDC matched perfectly with my 14.5 and 62gr M855. I spent 7 years and two combat deployments staring though a Ta31 and I definitely prefer the crosshair reticle over the chevron. And by using the 507c I don’t need to use the BAC concept with the bright chevron. The height of the 507c in the Arisaka allows me to just slightly cant the rifle to make shots easily. To me it’s the best of both worlds. I have redundancy in my sighting systems. The accuracy of the 4x with BDC crosshair and the speed of the eotech style reticle with excellent battery life. And all at a reduced weight/profile over the razor.
@@pinfalt7750 Thanks! It's funny how it seems like we're all kind of looping back again. LPVO with an offset is the current rage, but there's definitely a weight penalty for it. I think we're on the verge of seeing a swing back towards compact prismatic optics in conjunction with small RDS.

Great video! I have several setups and they each have a use case. My TA31 Acog has an RMR, and I really like that setup for shorter builds (12.5 inch). For longer builds I like a LPVO with a top mounted (12 o'clock) RMR. What the Acog/RMR setup shines at is creating a small tough quick configuration that will probably survive anything I can throw at it.

Part of the eye box problem can be corrected by moving the rear iron sight to the rail in front of the acog which allows you to move the acog back another couple of inches. Also if you don’t like the chin weld for the higher rmr, you can run it on a 45 degree mount and put it in front of the acog but behind the iron sights. That’s how I run mine and it’s works great.
I've been running this setup with a DR sight (pre-RMR) for at least 15 years on an A4 then M4. I found it very usable and practical for a fighting rifle, but can see where the drawbacks become more of an issue in competition. On reflection, it may be that since the military configured rifles are already heavier than the modern AR styles, they are slower to use so the slightly slower ACOG/RMR setup isn't the rate determining step. In any case, I think your review is fair and well thought out. I also know exactly where this was filmed, though I usually use the west side rather than the north.
On my SPR I run a 33 degree (IIRC) offset from my much larger, higher mag scope, and while I think that also works very well, it isn't enough better to make me want switch completely. Honestly, the GWOT and then the 3 gun boom really left us with an embarrassment of equipment riches. As long as you buy good quality for durability, including mounts, I think it will all work if you put the time in to know your chosen setup well.

@@BrassFacts Pretty close. I was training as an engineer for a few years before changing my mind and going into uniform. Later, I became a medic and went overseas for a while. Now a PA. Been around long enough to have started with revolvers and A2, and remember when variable power scopes were fragile and unreliable. So glad we got past that! Life is so much better this way.
Rmr to aimpoint acro adapter plate from primary weapons systems paired with the new aimpoint acro with good battery life will make the acog and piggyback red dot combo my new favorite setup. Just waiting on my backordered acro. Gonna take my rmr off and see how it goes. Hopefully i can stomach the fov difference.

I LOVE the 1.5x acog with accs reticle. Like a red dot with built in range finder. Just enough magnification to be a little better at 100-150 than a dot. Little enough magnification to not hurt cqb
I think the acog is still hands down the best it's been proven and it's durable I love tritium I love fiber optic and the piggy back dot is perfect I'm a fan boy of the rm04 on the acog total end of the world set up with no batteries
I’m unsure why your video is this good per your sub count but, good shit man. I recently started using the RMR on top of my ACOG and I like it. However, I was previously running a lot of RDS on a carry handle like a Delda guy back in the day. So a high up RDS doesn’t feel weird. Now, with that said I already had the RMR and the ACOG and only had to buy a mount. I don’t know if I’d have done it otherwise. Plus, it looks cool. And as flannel da- *uhh* Garand Thumb says, looking cool is important. All great remarks regarding pros and cons. Take care.

4x32 ACOG with a Scalarworks Leap mount plus a RMR/HS407c on top is only about 14.5 ounces. That is actually insane when you think about it. Good video.
One thing nobody ever talks about really is the irons on some of the acogs. I'd like to see a ta-01 with the rear ghost ring removed and just the tritium front irons used inside 25yards and see how it would be.
I actually considered doing this over buying an elcan, but i decided that having a consistent eye relief/cheekweld for both 1x and 4x was worth the extra weight and downsides to the prism 1x on the elcan. I also like the elcans reticle a lot.

@@BrassFacts yeah its def not bad. I feel like hop just has a preference for red dots in general. I know the specter has less forgiving eye relief than lpvo's and isnt as fast as a red dot but it weighs less than most lpvo's and definitely can take a harder beating which is important to me since mine is on a SCAR 17.
Do both, specter dr elcan with rmr, good 1x 4x for day and then the rmr works with nvgs for if you want passive aiming. Also make sure you buy a rmr with a colored reflective coating and if it's made of plastic you buy one of those metal shields for it. You could buy an enclosed rmr instead for ur elcan too that would be perfect.

No one ever takes the castle into account. Everyone discusses tactics and equipment from a battlefield (invader) perspective. If you’re home, (castle), you can use the AR-15 with the Nightforce when they’re at 500-meters, then grab your AR-15 with the ACOG when they’re at 300-meters, finally, grab your AR-15 with the EOTech when they’re inside 100-meters. Most guys have all 3. Most guys are defenders - not invaders.

The battery powered acog bumps the RMR a wee bit forward so its nicer for NVG use.
I personally use the Browe 4x32 BCO. Brian Browe used to work for Trijicon and pushed them to make a battery version. They didnt do it so he left and did it on his own...then they went and made the battery powered one.
Its the best version of this IMO. The light sensor/firmware adjusts the brightness based on what the reticle is aimed at (rather than ambient light where yiu are.
(Plus they make it in 7.62x39)
Only downside is that the piggyback mounts use shield rather than RMR footprints...so you hafta use a glock mos plate JB welded onto the mount if you want an RMR
I use to have that combo, then I gave my acog to my grandpa for gratitude for storing my rifles for when I moved out of state, my current rifle now just keeps the RMR.

I've been a kool-aid drinking ACOG cultist for years and just discovered the joys of the ECOs...since buying one over a year ago, I've added two more RMRs to my stable of ACOGs.
Another "piggy-back" config that's ''the tits'' is the Elcan & Docter RDS...I recently acquired the latter and mounted it on the former. IMHO, the Elcan/Docter config is far better than my Elcan/Trijicon RMR kit and can describe the difference between the Docter's clarity (@ distances past 50 yards) and Trijicon's is like night and day...I was shocked by the Docter's ability too clearly out to 200 yards.

I went with an ACOG with the ACSS reticle after trying my buddy's and thinking it was like having a cheat code on the rifle. I decided to go with a Holoson on a 45° after talking to many guys that had ran them and RMRs and said the Holoson were just better now. I like being able to maintain the same cheek weld to use both. I can just twist my rifle a little bit and I'm good out to 50, straighten back up and move out to 300+ with the ACOG. It's almost too easy to put rounds where you want them.
Not only does it still work, but it's objectively superior for its intended application to the Specter DR. Which if anyone needs to know why, I'll write a lengthy reasoning if prompted.

Great vid, the only thing stopping me from buying one is the battery. I have heard in the RMR that you need to completely remove it (lose zero) to swap it out. I'd love to try out an acog topped with the new aimpoint acro p-2

I’ve had my Acog/RMR for over 6 years and have replaced the batteries once. The RMR is ambient light sensitive so storing it in a dark place vastly increased battery life. I personally think there’s nothing that beats it. MOA on my dot is about 1 MOA. Not sure how you came up with over 3.

I have something for you to try. Maintain your cheek weld & rotate the gun so the top mounted RMR is in front of your non-dominate eye. A Trijicon rep said this was the design intent for placing the RMR so high. It works but takes a little practice to switch eyes.
try it. You're going to be occluded shooting, They'll be a strong offset that grows with distance. IT works at straight CQB only.
Good video. I commented above but it fits here better. I have that setup for rotating and zeroed at 50 meters: point of impact 2” left at 100 meters and would obviously increase with distance. I figure that’s what the Acog is for. The height is the more significant factor.
Love my TA31 with a Holosun HS507c on top for CQB. Added a REM ACOG add on illuminator to the TA31 so I can see the Reticle in low light situations. No need to buy chemlights anymore. Works great when indoors in a dim room looking out into bright sunlight. Also eliminates the need to replace a dead Tritium. Just turn it on to the lowest setting #1 and boom... A nice soft glowing Reticle.
Not having the budget for an ACOG, I found much of what you've talked about regarding it applicable to other decent, but less expensive 3x-5x prisms such as Burris, Primary Arms, etc.
One of the things to keep in mind is that you get what you pay for. With an ACOG, you aren't paying for glass quality, other prism optics can have glass just as good or better; you are paying for durability.
The ACOG is a TANK, and I can't stress it enough. I ran an arms room in the army and never once came across a broken, or even damaged, ACOG. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the RMR. Despite it also having a reputation as a tough optic, every single duty rifle I've seen with one mounted piggyback on an acog was broken, either glass shattered or otherwise non-functional. Keep in mind these are duty rifles that grunts treat with zero respect, ymmv.

Just got done watching a movie called the outpost. Pretty decent movie. Most m4s had the Acog on it in the movie. In a end of the world shtf scenario I think the accog is what I would want on my rifle.
I love Trijicon Dual illuminated OPTICS. If I could only own 2 optics fir 556 . It would be TR24 & TA45 with Red Triangle.

in Florida an ACOG w/RMR has advantages over an LPVO. There aren’t hills or much wide open terrain so high magnification isn’t so necessary. It’s scrubby so unless you’re in the middle of a cow pasture high power is not as necessary as the desert. Light weight, a high RMR for night vision with enough magnification and field of view for most purposes just works.
Good shit. I think a b5 sopmod enhanced stock would help you out a bit when usin the red dot. Gives you a bit more, I use one with my red dot on a unity fast mount. I think they're pretty close to the same height.
Good video my friend has an acog for his ak so super nice for 100 to 400 yards not so easy for close up but with the opportunity to install a red dot on top of the optical makes the acog an even better tool

I’m glad you made this video I think that the glass on this is so great that it’s easier to get hits at distance than some 6x scopes the 4 power by it’s self is not great at speed but with a 45 degree red dot it is plus a cantilever mount lightens my rifle where my Razor makes it weigh as much as some small moons!!!🤯🔫👍🏽

Pushed back TA31F with Larue RCO mount Plus Holosun 507c ACSS chevron RM35 mount was my initial set up but then I tried Arisaka Offset canted sights with 509T and found it more useable as the offset redot isn’t so up in my eyes when tilt and aim. Using non dominant eyes with vertical offset red dot takes some time to master but it could as well as get fast as canted sights in the latter set up. In the end, I favored non traditional appearance but much more comfortable and quicker set up than what I used in the marines with BUIS
yep, whatever works. Most things in 2021 are quite good/work well. We're just discussing the last 10% of optimization. So a lot of user preference there.

Algorithm comment. I've always had a huge love of ACOGs, but I've always struggled at 25 yards with them. I'm eventually going to buy one; you've talked me into trying out an RMR with one

For the first range trip or two, it wasn't really working for me. Slow shots, bad presentation etc.
But eventually it clicked.

@@bass779 you'll be dealing with a chin weld. The break through for me was not letting myself just float my head (just touching), but instead to lightly press it into the stock. Similar to a normal cheek weld
Recoil management seems to be key here to get similar performance.
Acog with the rmr on 45 * degree offset solves all issues. Shoot with 200 yards easily with rmr on 45 degree with fast follow ups. Took rmr off the top and used trijicom on 445degree mount. My favorite set up.

Get a Weapon Outfitters Kram Optic Spacers for ACOG, it'll solve your eye relief issue + it'll give the RMR more height, so you can have a more heads-up shooting position and it would be much easier to passive aiming under nods (of course this depends on the mount + spacer height that you get)

I was running a 4x32 with offset T1 for years, last year put a Vudo 1-10x on. This year going back. Just can’t beat the combo and superior glass of the ACOG.
I got the ta31ecos model and keep getting scope kissed by the rear buis on the top. I decided to switch it around a little by moving it forward a couple of notches.
As we move to higher red dot mounts, this seems more relevant than ever. T-Rex arms brought up a good point that the piggyback/offset red dot can effectively be used as a primary optic - just like we would use a red dot and magnifier.
I don’t think the RMR is the best tool for the job anymore if you think of it as a primary optic.
The Holosun dots have clearer glass, easier to change batteries, are more durable and have Eotech style reticles with a solar panel.
Alternatively, if you already have the bombproof ACOG on your rifle, you can accept some risk and put something like the SRO on top that has the clearest glass on the market. You’ll sacrifice reliability for the red dot, but your 1x experience will be better.

I don't think they're the same as primary optics.
Especially the piggyback is to high for a good cheek weld, reducing consistency, recoil management etc. The observed effects are pretty minor, but they are there.
The holosun might be better in most aspects, but its generally a pretty poor NV performer, so well depend on if that's on your to do list.

I had an ACOG + RMR combo. I tried the RMR both on top and on a 45 degree offset mount. I ended up ditching the RMR entirely while keeping the ACOG. I found the BAC, Bindon aiming concept, to be superior for me than the RMR in either position. The RMR on top prevented me from getting a good cheek weld which made it inherently slower than just using the BAC. The offset mount allowed for a decent cheekweld, but I found that it wasn't any faster than just using the BAC and having to twist the rifle wasn't working for me with how my stock grips my shoulder.

My ideal do all setup runs a 10x44 SWFA with a top mounted dot in 18" 6mm ARC, and a Sightmark LoPro underneath. (Budget, baby!)
All kidding aside... if NV aiming isn't a primary concern, try using a SeeAll Night Sight on the RMR mount above your ACOG. The Mk3s have a super clear delta reticle, and doesn't obscure nearly as much of your field of view. Plus, no batteries, and I've yet to actually break one.

I’ll have to share valuable insight as I’ve done before. When transitioning from Acog to rmr, don’t lift your head, keep your head in the same position as when aiming through the Acog, then 45 tilt the rifle and pick up the rmr with your left eye, both eyes open. Drastic difference
that's basically occluded shooting. works for point blank, creates a divergence that causes misses at about 15 yards and beyond. Did a video on it.

I can do it out to 100 meters and plenty of people do it that I have trained. on you tube, Trex arms is a more popular person than me and he has video of doing it. It isn’t difficult so if you’re having trouble, you might need to go back to the basics and start slow. Any questions, feel free to ask

Had I to do it all over again, an Acog with a DPP offset would have been it. I am speaking about my main rifle. My bedside / shtf rifle. I have other rifles, with other setups... did not like the lpvo (odd huh?) and prefer the Eotech and Sig Romeo5. In the end... the Acog is nearly indestructible and proven.

If i knew my lpvo would never break, id take the extra weight all day long. Id even take an mpvo. Given that even in 2024, scope durability is still a question mark, its hard to not take an acog once the boog hits.

Great content. Not really arguing the point cuz I don’t have as much experience as you but I’m interested in these options. Is a red dot with a magnifier really that much more costly and bulky? I would think weight and cost would be about the same?
it's the bulk. having a thing hanging off on the same is awkward.
you can get the fold to center thing, but that forces you to use a giraffe mount which not everyone will care to use.
I've thought, for some time, that setup looks about optimum. I would want some reinforcement "ears" on either side of the RMR for durability. I wouldn't want to destroy my RMR when it got caught on something...which is bound to happen, often. The only setup that I think could be comparable, if not better, in some respects, is an ELCAN with the throw lever for dual magnification. I suppose people will comment on this as to which setup is better, and why. I'll look forward to that.
personally I run a elcan, and I think it's the superior option. but the price makes it tough to stomach

I just put an MRM red Dot on my TA31. At 10 yds My RMR Red Dot is 10 inchs high. I'm out of adjustments.
LVPO is a simpler training option? With the shift in zero a different magnifications I would say the ACOG is the simpler training option. Good video tho

I still have an ACOG+RMR rifle. Outdated? Perhaps. Still fully functional. Will I get some sort of 1-6 with an offset RMR or Holosun later? Probably.
I feel like this guy would laugh at my gear at the range and then probably beat me up.

Do you think the RMR is going to be widely replaced by the ACRO gen 2 as the piggy back mounted red dot?
@@Silentblogger659 guess if you really wanted more durability you could go ACRO or Aimpoint T2 but it's all about what you want for your setup.
