I love that we all sort of independently have approached a similar idea for a build. Mine uses classic polymer handguards on a 20" barrel, and an ACOG/RMR stack. I also love turning cheap 55gr into gold!
Those poly classic handguards are the tits. The heat shields are magic.

I love that. First time hearing that and honestly that could be a great rebranding. Gun grabbers want to call them assault rifles, military style rifles but the truth this; the AR-15 is the civilian defense rifle.

That "crappy plastic lower" has had plenty of torture testing and it has held up to all of it. and the parts on it are just fine. Not a fan of the cost, but that's why I ended up building my own WWSD inspired AR

When I hike I always carry a rifle. I carried a 10 lb Garand when younger and it would wear me out. Now a ar15 with 16” barrel and Leupold 1-4 scope is perfect. Even with large cap magazine it is a joy to carry.

This is exactly what I'm turning my 12.5 into. Ditching my acog/rmr stack for the PA 3x micro prism and going to a lighter weight stock. It will shave 1lb off the gun and come In at 7lbs with optic, light and sling
the PA prism is a good optic when weight is a concern.
for those who can't afford night vision the leupold twilight light management system works real good at night, combined with an illuminated reticle It's pretty awesome, add a night vision or thermal clip on and you can own the night.
I love this concept. For me, I achieved similar goals with a "ultralight spr"
16" 625 hanson barrel. Very light. Very accurate. Modest length, but able to take medium-long shots for a carbine and utilize m193 to reasonable ranges.
KP15 lower and a LIGHTWEIGHT triji1-4 (IMPORTANT). I can fight, observe, run. Loaded weight is *chefs kiss*. We have a farm, so I actually carry the rifle for at least an hour or two a day. I take it with me when I'm in the woods. Starting May 01 (fkn love WV) it or a red dot pw14.5 kp15 will live in my car. The WWSD rifle has some quirks but the lowers are my personal favorite now. The concept is valid, and can be tweaked to your needs/location. Light, handy, versatile.
Building the same rifle, what kind of hand guard did you use?
Funny I did the Hanson 750 in 16 but I threw a quad rail on it as added shielding from unplanned drops or smacks

@@treloughfarrer7604 No need unless you are using your rifle as a breaker bar. Mine has taken more than one tumble off an atv. I'm still on the same 62gr gold dot handload zero from probably a year and a half ago. nothing has moved. and by tumble i mean while driving. I think the myth of the bayonet fighting bent barrels (that turned out to be a gas port drilling problem) still curses skinny barrels to this day. A 5/8 steel rod just is not that fragile.
I think it's cool that I've been shilling the same setup for years, complete with the pinned middy fsgb, free float handguard, and 3x/5x magnification optics. I personally would go with the full 16" barrel and not the pin and weld, I agree that for a lot of people every inch counts. I like the name "Field Rifle" and think everyone should use it to describe a similar rifle build from now on. In other words based field rifle appreciator. And on that note, based making up your own weapon classifaction-er
What does the term “free float” mean
@@echo3568 means the barrel is not in contact with any other part of the gun aside from where it's screwed into the receiver.
For instance, on standard pattern AR, the handguard is held onto the gun between a delta ring and handguard cap that's attached to the front sight. So applying pressure to the handguard can potentially change your point of impact.
Having a freefloat means any external pressure applied to the handguard doesn't put any of that on the barrel.
What's you preference for 5x optics? I want something just a little more than a 3x for the red dot.

@@free2chasehappy Could go with an LPVO. There's a lot of options out there. I picked up a cheap Vortex 1-4x that has a built-in red dot. Really good value IMO. I'll probably be getting one with more magnification later though as I think that the little extra weight is worth it for the extra magnification. It does depend on where you expect to use it though.
Good stuff, I used to be the guy that had an ar for every "scenario" but recently started trimming back on things I felt not as necessary including whole rifles. Instead I started keeping kitted out uppers I can slap on a lower that's preset to my liking. So basically if I need the suppressed nightvision capabilities I got, it I need the light and fast, I got it, also a hunting setup aswell. Also buy sellin off a few rigs gave me more money to get better equipment and accessories for the rigs I kept.
Kinda the same. I have two setups one is fixed so the upper will never leave it. The other is my swapper so that way I can change up day to day.

A general purpose rifle, the modernization of Jeff Coopers (slightly nutty) scout rifle concept. A lightweight rifle capable of effective hits out to 400 yards with a low powered optic. There's nothing new under the sun, but this channel routinely packages old ideas in well thought out and articulated ways.

I live out in the country so a 10 and a half inch barrel AR wasn't my best setup now I have a 20 inch barrel recce rifle and a 16-in barrel m4 with a red dot magnifier the 20-in barrel has a low power variable optic works awesome where I'm at and when all else fails I have a Savage 110 308 bolt gun with a 3x9x40 scope on it
The idea of a svelte / lightweight but capable rifle that you always have with you in semi lawless environments makes sense. Adding the magnification requirement adds a twist that is seldom discussed. I like that you are bringing it up here. I can see why the prism / ACOG paired with a lightweight red dot or iron sight would be ideal for this use case.
Listening to this has got me thinking.
In my rifle collection I have a few rifles that I think would work well in this role:
-A 16” barreled AR with lightweight pencil barrel. The lightweight barrel is noticeably lighter and less front heavy than my military profiled rifles with the same barrel length
-12.5” barreled AR pistols. These have better velocity than my 11.5” barreled pistols yet the difference in weight and size is barely noticeable.
Both of these rifles currently have red dots and iron sights. For magnification I could add a magnifier or switch to an ACOG / prism. Will chew on this some more. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!

I’ve been tuning my own version of this for months and this is the first time I’m seeing someone else explore the topic in similar detail (really like the name also). I’m in the SE on a farm/rural area and it’s my go to gun. I’m experimenting using it in conjunction with a belt rig and so far it’s been fantastic for hog presence checks, camping, and fence line checks. It’s really cool seeing similar discussions going on, especially all the way across the country
Once again your line of thinking is on par with what I've been thinking recently. It's good to get another perspective and point of view, giving me a more solid understanding of the topic I've already been mentally rehearsing.
IWI Zion-15 12.5" is the rifle I went with partly due to it being relatively lightweight. I went with the Primary Arms X2 prism optic and it's quite hefty for its size but it makes up for it with durability and only costing $400.
I'm interested to finding out more about polymer ammo and see if that's something that is obtainable.
Glad to see another lefty in the gun world makes me feel not alone XD
This is essentially what I have as my main rifle. 16”, lightweight rail, lightweight barrel, suppressor capable but not mandatory, light, back up sights, sling, and I deviate in that I’m running an EOTech.
Living in SE MI I don’t get a ton of opportunities to practice at 200+ yards, or even find sight lines of 200+ yards that aren’t roads, so I didn’t prioritize for that.

Thank you for giving me a term for my philosophy of how to build out an AR. GPR and SPR definitions never quite fit my description, but your definition of "field rifle" or better yet, "Recce-Lite" really nails it.
I like the label of modern scout rifle. This partnered with your video on why urban isn’t actually CQB aligns with my philosophy pretty well.
I'm running a SWFA SS fixed 10 with a 12 o'clock mounted red dot and a 3 prong flash hider on my go to rifle. It's a 16" pencil barrel setup.
Lightweight, does everything I need it to, durable and covers all my bases.
I got SWFA Ultralight 2.5-10, fantastic piece of glass, doesn't get any lighter. Light transmission actually seemed comparable to my ACOG. I only wish they had a mil/Christmas tree reticle or it might actually replace my ACOG
@@FirePrank6 I'm running the JVCR reticle in a 5-25 package on my LR308, and honestly, I find it entirely too busy for anything other than very long range work.
Maybe I'm just weird, though. I know a lot of people love it.
@@BuckFoeJiden I get that, doesn't bother me too much but I run an offset red dot a lot and also tend to stay in the lower magnification ranges 16x and below
@@FirePrank6 I've taken to running a red dot on top of my scopes. Especially on the AR10. It's a lot faster to adjust my cheek weld than to rotate the whole ass rifle. Especially from cover or prone. But yeah, I get what you're saying. My TS-25X stays on around 12x 90% of the time, unless I'm spotting for someone else, or taking a VERY long shot (800 yds+)
Not really much need for it on my 16" 556. The furthest I'll ever realistically reach with m855 or m193 is around the 500 yd mark.
I do find the mil reticle superior, though. Even without the Christmas tree. Especially for ranging applications. The glass on my fixed 10 is super clear, too.
Transitions from 300 yds to 50 yds between the scope and the top mounted dot are stupid fast, especially compared to an LPVO.
@@BuckFoeJiden Yep to pretty much all of that, but I do find it funny that when I experimented with red dot on top and offset I found offset more consistent and I actually liked prone more offset because it cants the mag over, allowing me to get lower. Never actually used 12 o'clock mount after I played with it, maybe I'll have to get a piggyback mount for my ACOG. Also the transition speed is exactly why I much prefer ACOG w/ red dot than LPVO
I’m almost done with a build that fits pretty nicely into the “field rifle/light recce” concept. Light weight 12.5 barrel, acog/rmr combo, probably a dd risIII when they come out. I was originally inspired by the Vietnam era CAR-15 or really the role it filled for the SOG guys, but wanted all modern parts. Kind of a CAR-15 in 2022 if you will.

@@PastaLaVista. Faxon makes a 12.5 “suppressor optimized” barrel you can buy on Brownells that looks like a lightweight profile. I back ordered a Criterion 12.5 CORE barrel because I like the tapered profile better. I was originally going to try running one of the retro Brownells pencil barrels but those all use an a1 barrel extension which means no m4 cuts. I’ve read it can cause issues if you try using an a1 barrel extension in a standard non a1 upper receiver

I still like the SOPMOD approach to my “minuteman bag” where I have one lower and two uppers. One upper is a GPR and the other is a SBR with night capability.
A few years back I did setup a rifle for my buddy, who lives on a 500 acre farm, that is pretty much a field rifle. 14.5” Faxon gunner profile barrel, 13” BCM mlock rail, Aero upper/lower, ALG trigger, BCM lower parts kit and BCG, Steiner 1-4x LPVO on a lightweight Aero mount, Surefire mini scout. He keeps it in his side-by-side and regularly picks off coyote out to 300 yards with Hornady varmint rounds.

My urban recce-lite is a Daniel Defense .300 blackout PDW with an omega 300 suppressor shooting subsonics.
Smaller, decent weight, shoots accurately to 150-200 yards. Sound report is a clap.
Depending on the attire, you could have that slung under an overcoat with almost no print if have a sling that can tighten against your body.
Rural recce-lite will be my CDR-15 with a vortex 1-8 strike eagle sporting a Noman-L suppressor. That can is amazing for 556. While it is a long can, 100% worth it.
I have a battle belt setup that was designed for quick movements while still being able to get things done.

I think RECCE-L as you’re calling it will be what 80% of the armed population would have. A PSA A15, 16in barrel, Red Dot/Prism sights, and maybe a light. Most people don’t have night vision or NFA items, granted that’s starting to change slowly, but most people will have a bare minimum defensive rifle wearing blue jeans, a flannel shirt, ball cap, and a backpack.
Thermals will likely out pace night vision just due to cost not saying nv is bad but for most target aqustion is enough

I'm thinking we spend too much time creating categories and pigeon holes for things of various utility. I have rifles, box fed semi auto types. Some are lighter, some are heavier. All serve a purpose, and I just describe them by caliber.

I built a similar setup using a BA Hanson 13.9 with a pin and weld Dead Air flash hider. Midwest lightweight combat rail. Modlite PLHv2 18350 with a Modbutton Lite. MBUS Pro offsets. Aimpoint T2 on Scalarworks mount with a Trijicon 3x mag. The only weight adder was the A5 buffer system, but that balances it in such a way that it feels like a shorter rifle. It’s a barely 7 pound setup unloaded. I could do a micro prism like this and get under 7.
NCR Service Rifle for patrolling the Mojave. With critical hit multiplier against radscorpions and ghouls!

im a simple man, i see a fixed front iron, i hit the like button.
20 inch A2/4 variant with a 4x ACOG, Magpul MOE forend with a Streamlight Pro-Tac weapon light, or a 16 inch carbine or mid-length FSB setup with the same optic and weapon light. A2 flash hider because its really good and found just about everywhere if you don't have the coin for a can.

I just finished building basically the same thing. I didn't really have a name for it. I went with iron fixed iron sights though, C7 upper but with the A2 aperture. Just a grab and go, probably will carry it more than shoot it but if I need it I'll need more than a pistol, rifle..

This is a brilliant concept. But ultimately, this is just a recce for folks that can't afford or aren't allowed to have night vision and/or a suppressor and were never gonna put a bipod on anyway.
It's really the essentials for doing actual daytime recon patrols where you're more likely to spot enemies with your binos before you ever pull the rifle off your back. I initially thought a flashlight might be optional...but I guess anytime you're walking around in public with a loaded AR with a fear of meeting other guys pointing AR's at you....is a good time to have a flashlight on your gun. Lol.
I think the addition of a suppressor for your environment would improve your effectiveness by a lot. The concussion from your muzzle kicks up the dirt making your position more visible. Just something to consider.

I mentioned to my father that I would like a mountain gun since I moved to Wyoming 6 years back. Sure enough a bit before my birthday this year he visited and handed me a 1942 K98 marked G.33/40 - a Gebirgsjäger rifle - in excellent condition (my opinion not an expert opinion). 8mm Mauser especially these Sellier & Bellot 196 gr cartridges that he got me 10 boxes of are a bit more punch than my sissy shoulder is used to. I guess if things go south I can find something to do with this, who knows. It sure smells good.
Here in rural Texas it's known as a truck gun (or trunk gun) something simple always nearby and available for when you need something to pop a cap in the a$$ of a few wild pigs that wander into traffic.
Mine is an older dpms lower with a timney trigger and an upper from midway USA (ar stoner I think) 1in7 twist to launch 77 grainers better (knocks down the 200 lbs pigs with authority) magpul buis's and a streamlight, a couple extra mags, with a sling you can carry it all day, handy, lightweight and always nearby

Nice video. The concept reminds me of the concept of a "KISS Rile" (Keep It Simple Stupid) I would see threads about on ARFCOM a while ago. These KISS rifles are similar to the field rifle concept, but they usually had irons only. I think that there is certainly a niche for rifles that sacrifices enablers for weight reduction.

I sold the first one I got and built second one before they made the CDR wwsd so its what I built ..love that gun ..I am running a med profile barrel with the Tiber creek enforcer rail .its like 8 0z aluminum 13.7 rail ..its still under 5.8 pounds with optics and mini 3 x mag is only what another 5 oz now with the Sig jul? Its a great idea man
Went from full kit and plates . I might own DD guns or other ar15s but I love this wwsd I built at under 6 pounds and mini chest rig .. Makes life much more fun then carrying a wasr10 with 18 pounds of zenco

A lpvo is my preference, as higher magnification allows me to see better and id something.
Definitely a solid setup for where you're at. I'm in an urban setting surrounded by heavy woods, so I don't have much need for an ar above 13.7 with a red dot

@@twiggybones7040 I did and he makes decent points but I don't take that as gospel. I'm plenty ok with a red dot, and carry magnification on me regardless. Aimpoints are fine, and I don't think I'm going to be capped because I'm one of the only people in my group without magnification on my rifle. Especially in the woods when most of the time I have a 50 yard sight line
@@The_PotionSeller Not gospel, no, but numbers do not lie. If you check out hops video he just posted on fake m193 you'll see how much velocity matters. Ice picking bullets are not all that effective as learned in Mogadishu.

If I was using a 10.3 that's another discussion, but 300 yards is my upper maximum of range in 99.9% of areas. 14.5 has been used out at 4-500 yards with deadly effect, and there is no real difference between the 2 in velocity. I have no desire to change my setup, its a perfect setup for my area, and I'd argue that unless you live in a barren expanse of land like Utah or Oklahoma, that 13.7 or 14.5 is an ideal barrel length across the board
@@The_PotionSeller To each their own. It all depends on where you see yourself needing your rifle. I'm not a potion seller, the 5.56 maximum effective range is 300 yards. You could absolutely stretch that out to 800 yards. You're losing terminal ballistics. There's no potion to fix it. Whether it's a 20in barrel 300 yards is maximum effective range. Effective being the key word, meaning tissue damage, and deadly. Still having enough ass behind a pea sized bullet to really fuck somebody up, because that's the point right? Fragmentation being absolutely needed, deformation causing the yaw inside the target, both rely heavily on velocity. You lose that at distance. Sure you can hear your steal ping, but replace that with fluid what is your visual of a hit? You want, no, you need effectiveness and you want every bit of velocity you can get. Especially if you're using 5.56. Do not sell yourself short, because the guy who just got hit with pea sized bullet isn't going to just disappear. He is going to really try to fuck you up.

Love the concept, makes a ton of practical sense to me even without some doomsday situation. I’m thinking a 16 inch brn-180 would do really well for that application given it’s pretty slim light package that you can put a lightweight folding stock onto instead of a buffer tube. Did some Googleing and I think you could keep it under 9lbs with an acog + rmr and metal irons. Very cool concept although I think most people would probably setup their “recce rifle” pretty similarly anyway albeit probably heavier.
I essentially built this type of rifle. 20 inch barrel similar to M16A1 profile, quite light. Carbon fiber free float to keep weight down. Optic is unorthodox. Leupold fixed 2.5x in an Aero Precision ultra light mount. It’s not tactical at all but it’s lightweight and the eye relief works better with an A1 stock. I might add an MRDS on a 45 degree offset if the offset mount will fit under the Aero mount. Just to have a backup more than any need I feel for having an MRDS specifically.
I believe it’s right at 7 lbs. Easy to tote all day. Does not have NVG compatibility goodies. I cant afford them anyway.
The full size barrel with low magnification is conceptually not about finding a fight and winning it, but about getting me out of a fight that found me and keeping hostile actors away from me using the superior long range performance of the full length barrel.
Just thought of a new way to cover the long and short of it all, carry one good lower and 2 uppers. Long range 6mm ARC in backpack, "field AR .223 Wylde" on the sling. I'm going to try this soon. Thanks for the idea.
I’m taking a piston over DI if shtf. Long or short don’t matter. They’re better suppressor host. Cleaner and if it’s dirty and no lubes around just open the gas up.
My field rifle set up is a 14.5 ELW barrel, MCMR rail, ACOG/RMR combo. Great for lugging around the hills out on the farm and putting 69gr smk into cow turds at 300 yards.

I like the WWSD rifle however I think it's out ranked by Faxons ultralight rifle. Sure it's probably not as cool and high tech but it is super lightweight coming in at 5 pounds unloaded and it has some more traditionally durable equipment. That'd probably be my ideal rifle for a edc/Feild rifle. Run it with a HE515 GtGr on a unity FAST mount, 40 round pmag, arisaka finger indexer and a surefire g2x w/red lense filter on an arisaka mount.
What you've built is a "patrol rifle" because you'll be "patrolling" your AO with it-- It's got nothing to do with LEOs, except they have "patroll rifles," too-- for the same reason(s)

I did mine wirh a 13.7 and a vortex 5x prism with an rmr on top of it. Very light. Very minimal. But still can sprawl out and hit range.

IMO, a SBR w red dot and folding sights might be well suited for many instances for a rifle primarily used around town gathering supplies, checking on friends/family, tending to chores and things.
A “Get Home Gun” might be similar to a Recce Rifle. But if we are embracing Consumerism whole heartly, as we all should be, that demands another, albeit similar rifle. For my GHG I still like a fairly short barrel. Maybe 12 to 16 inches might be a good since we may need to take longer shots while out on the road verse around town. The extra umpf from the velocity might also help a tad if we need to penetrate cover. A LPVO might be more appropriate here. You still want it short and light weight to make transporting and storing it easier, not to mention carrying it on foot long distances. A shorter rifle would-be easier to deploy from a vehicle as well.
If you know your offsets with and without a can, you might want to carry it without a can mounted. 10 or 12 ounces on the far end of your barrel, plus the extra length make vehicle deployment, walking and doing various tasks a bit more troublesome. If you must respond at the spur of the moment with your rifle, your adversary is probably already aware of your position, so a can is not critical to shielding your position. If you are getting “the willies” about something or know that you will need to take a shot and want to use the can to save your hearing as well as to make pinpointing your exact location harder to do, you can always attach the can. If you are on foot traveling home, the presence of a can on your rifle might make you stand out a little more to the average schmuck. On the other hand, there may be a time when you want to send different message to potential observers who are on the fence about starting something. That could go either way I guess. But if I have to walk 100+ miles to get home, I will probably remove the can unless I really need it.
I have a good bit of experience casually carrying and using rifles in around vehicles. Casual as in not LE or military, just an average Joe that hunts a lot and carries his rifle in the vehicle next to him most of the time.
I hunt with an AR in 6.8 and I have an upper with a 16 inch barrel and one with a 12.5 inch barrel. I’m six foot four inches tall and even I find that once you add the can to the 16 inch barrel it becomes much more likely to catch on objects as you walk through brush, and it is harder to deploy from a vehicle. Even when slung it catches on things. In Texas we can legally have loaded and uncased rifles and pistols while hunting on private land and while traveling on public roads. So, we frequently do so. On many hunting ranches it is common practice to have a loaded rifle, maybe no round in the chamber (depends on the ranch and the vehicle owner), pointed at the floorboard and held next to your knee while driving around. If I am using a can, I generally carry the 12.5 inch barreled rifle in the vehicle and when walking the woods because it is handier. It’s also easier to use from a box blind. I don’t use the 16 in barreled upper that much because I paid for the can and I want to use it most of the time. The point of sharing all of this is that a SBR as a travel gun/ get home gun has a lot of merits. If you don’t have to cross state lines. Another reason I will be sorry to see the pistol brace ban go into effect. If I frequented area like where you are training and shots could be long distances, I might rethink the very short barrel. My area doesn’t really have long sight plains between the areas I frequent and my home, so it would be unlikely for me to have to take a shot at 500+ yards. But in many cases, taking a shot that far might be kind of hard to justify as self-defense.
Maybe I missed hearing you mention it, but you need a quality sling for any of these types of rifles. You’ll need your rifle the first time you set it down for some reason. I have had this lesson reinforced to me several times when I left the stand without my rifle to relieve myself. It would be VERY awkward if one left one’s rifle at camp and then suddenly encountered a bad guy instead of a deer or feral hog.
Have you given any thought to carrying the Recce Rifle with a 20 round mag in the rifle, with a couple of 30 round mages as backup? I use a 15 round mag when hunting because it doesn’t catch on so many things. And it is marginally lighter in weight. I just thought of the weight issue while writing this, I really do it because it is much easier to carry and maneuver a rifle with mag that doesn’t stick out as far as a 30 rounder does. Also, in a potentially hostile environment, don’t have all of your spare mags inside your pack. At least one mag needs to be quickly available. I learned that hunting hogs as well.

Colt 6720 pencil barrel with Magpul SL handuard and a light. It already has irons so I slapped on an optic and sling calling it good.
CDR is a cool term I think. On the subject of the rifle I find myself always running my trijicon tritium amber “red dot” for optic and wondering if I need more zoom but never have (thats my area however) and its super light compared to a scope and works with my NVGs

What about a one lower, two upper system. One upper with a LPO and the other a dot? Change out the upper as needed.
One lower to rule them all is the route I went...Though I ended up with 2, one is a pistol lower for when going to states where I can't take my SBR lower

Gonna use the same lower for both to save time and money. No need build duplicate lowers, and I'm certainly not gonna build two different lowers and make them different.
I thought about that, but I quickly ruled it out because I knew I'd end up building another lower for the second upper XP

No, stay inside... turn lights off, lock it up. If you're a prepper you have food, water, etc for at least one year. Let the die-off occur naturally as the bubble bursts. After 6 months most trouble-makers and dead weight will have already perished. Why risk life and limb when most will die of dysentery and starvation within the first 30 days? The best bullet-proof armor is your house. If it's so bad that you have to go out and prevent people from burning it down then fine but as a general rule let people engage in the risks themselves. As long as they're not an immediate threat let them perish by their own devices.

A situation can occur where staying at home has its problems. Let say a natural catastrophy like Katrina occurs and your wife's mother lives 10 blocks away and you have no way of comunicating with her. Maybe just going to check up greyman style works (Brass Facts made about the importance of a PDW in this type of scenarios). Maybe something little more assertive will work better. Either way, you may have to leave your castle during SHTF.
@@carabinapacifista5627 If you have relatives nearby you should set up comms beforehand. CB radio base station is great and doesn't require a license but you can do HAM with more power for increased distance. Drones will be part of the plan too. Either way... do it now.
