I'm 99% certain that's also Don Alias on Percussion. Cue cool story: I, a fellow 4 stringer, was in a group that opened for David Sanborn (Don Alias was his percussionist). Funny thing is when I showed up, someone working at the venue asked "Are you the bassist for the opening act?" I replied, "yep!" and they told me to follow them.. So I did... Next thing I know someone else goes "Are you the bassist?!!" and I was like "yep!". That someone was Don Alias. HE ASKED THE VENUE TO BRING THE OPENING BASSIST TO HIM UPON ARRIVAL - it just happened to be me! He asked me if I had studied Jaco (I hadn't and told him so - I was only 14 at the time). He didn't show any disappointment but instead got SUPER EXCITED and told me that the second I go home, to look up Jaco Pastorius. Alias went on and on about how amazing Jaco was as a musician and talked a bit about their friendship. We also talked about his (Alias) personal music career. Once he started listed off names of who he has played with, I knew I was talking with a legend. They played a great show, and I asked Don Alias to sign my bass afterwards. He laughed and said "I'm not a bassist but okay! and remember, look up Jaco Pastorius when you get home". (He signed the back of the neck). I took his advice, looked up Jaco the second I got home, and fell in love with Teen Town. I practiced this tune over and over and over until I had a solid grasp of it. A few months went by when the Music Director (from the opening gig) called and told me that Don Alias had passed away. I immediately went to my bass guitar wanting to see the Legend's signature... to my distraught the signature was gone! I had practiced Teen Town so much that my thumb sliding along the back of the neck had wiped it clean off. I was just getting into the music scene, oblivious to one of the greatest bass players that has ever lived, and I can't express how open, passionate, and welcoming Don Alias was to me. Needless to say, I was pretty upset hearing the news... Now that I am much older, I realize that the signature meant nothing whereas the lack of his signature means everything. Thank you for introducing me to Jaco and for such kindness, Don Alias. May you Rest in Peace
Man that's crazy you got me thinking about that I've been studying Jaco too but I don't see many bassists around even though I'm from he was from Oakland Park FL I usually ride my bike from home to Las olas beach sometimes and just sit on the sand and play my bass for hours
@@fernandog.1575, Check out Sanborn's "Night Music"! TV show in the 80's. Don Alias and Omar Hakim were in the house band! Just visit David Sanborn, every show was a beautiful amalgam of all genres of great music!!
+HAPPY WHALE hey! where would we know mike stern from, right? i got an old 'peavey' strat-style guitar,it sounds more fendery than a fender! especially with new strings,i bet! i never change the strings ,the damn bridge is falling apart,y'know them little saddles with the sharp little screws sticking up,and on the ends, little tiny springs,on my 6th string, the spring is missing and the string holds the saddle on the guitar...never could set intonation-i need help!
I saw this band in 83', minus the horn,s, in Atlanta, at the Moon Shadow Saloon. Jaco was in a bad hungover state,he sounded bad! Here he,s good! I first saw him with Weather Report in 77' fantastic show, with Al Diemiola,as the opening act,my hair was literally standing on top of my head! 👌👆,Clay
After this show I meet Jaco and we were going to drink some Finnish spirit "Koskenkorva" with my frien Ilkka Willman, most famous bass player in Finland. Jacos roots are from Finland :)
I saw this band 4 times that year.. 1 time at Vienne Jazz Festival et 3 nights at the Nice Jazz Festival in France. I'll always remember how good was this band.. Thanx for posting this!
+linear john I remember seeing this in 1993/4 in Rovaniemi. The owner of the tape didn't let anyone copy it (for personal reasons). I guess he budged somewhere along the way big time. Fortunately :) Cheers for this.

wow !! ma... when Jaco was on, he was ON, and he is most certainly on in this video. Thank you so much for posting : ) **edit** I want to add that Mike Stern and the rest of the gang are rocking real hard as well, this is going to be one enjoyable video to watch all the way through.....
Johnny G ... I like Jaco as much as the next bassist, but I would not compare a virtuoso instrument player like JP to a classical composer like Beethoven. Jaco’s innovations were essentially limited to the electric bass guitar-his group compositions were arguably unremarkable for the mid-70s to early-80s Jazz Fusion scene. A better comparison would be to someone like Jimi Hendrix or Charlie Parker-guys known for pushing the boundaries of their instruments in original and technically astounding ways, but not necessarily known for unique compositions.
@@MisterCaution That's horseshit, classical music is WAY overrated. Beethoven can a suck a bag of dicks compared to Jaco and Weather Report. And if we're going to bring them up, Zawinul runs circles around Beethoven even more! Lol.

Bitter sweet to watch, saw these guys at 38th Cabaret in Phila around the same year( all coked up😐). Hiram Bullock played guitar. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of the tail spinning end for Jaco. He would recover and relapse. GODspeed.

Some of the BEST music from the 80's....and wasn't on the radio 😎👍
Teen Town, still one of the most killer grooves to this day.

Jaco’s groove and time is absolutely ridiculous.
?????
True dat. Its like he was born crying in perfect 9/8 time. Its nutz
in so happy you have this thank you
Jaco was the guv'nor. No one else played so naturally and intuitively. The music just flowed from him.
Jaco´s grandma is from northern Finland, by the way! :) Grandmother was a Finn named Kaisa Eriika Isojärvi
from his mother side?
yes.
Jaco's publishing company was called Haapala Music. Jaco's mom's name was Stephanie Haapala Pastorius (daughter of Kaisa Isojärvi).
Suomi! Tsunami! JACO!
😱
Amazing how easy Jaco transforms music into something so astonishing .
I had heard about Jaco playing with Mike Stern, but I've never seen it before. Thanks for posting.
He’s on mood swings by mike stern, and stern played live with jacos band a decent amount

Very good. The drummer has a unique approach and/ or his positioning is unusual.
Mike Sperm solo is incredible!!!
When you know the bass , you know the boss .
Jaco I’ll never forget you sr

+fibbo obbif yeah man, that resemblance hit me before too.
+tinfoilhatter: I am pretty sure Mr. Schwarzenegger would be a big fan of Jaco if he new what a great musician he was.
yes! they both always had a certain ambition, that was boundless,or inexhaustible

Very enjoyable. I Wish Jaco's sound had been more discernible, but still a great watch.
Jaco with frets..👌

Jaco sounds incredible always. Even on this poor audio.
My piano teacher Jan Gunnar Hoff played on Sterns album recently. Great musicians both of them!

Jaco was a musician. Not a ‘bass player.’ There’s a difference. Too many techno chop kids around now who just don’t get it.
