This is a great video clip!!!! Just because you can't handle a guy who is nuts having fun does not mean that others cannot appreciate Jaco in these moments. He was still the best Bass player in the world. Jaco was never "well". You get the whole package, that's the way life works. I was on this tour and I was good friends with Jaco, at this point his antics were still calculated and intentional. He was still having fun here!
...i saw Jaco playing with Weather Report many times when they visited the UK -what an amazing musician, but I also saw him after he left the band trying to talk his way into a gig, a situation that could have turned ugly when he realised he wasn't getting anywhere, luckily on that occasion someone behind the security line recognised him and they let him in...a few years later I was in an internet chat room with people discussing the whole 'jazz-fusion' era when the conversation turned to Jaco, many 'disappointing' views were expressed -he certainly was a controversial figure, usual, things you hear 'he was a junky' - 'his ego was over the top' etc but in that chat room one of his daughters spoke about him, with the sadness you would expect but she also spoke about him being undiagnosed bi-polar, something she also suffered with, and how he didn't get any support, who knows if he had a been a little better managed how much more he might have done...RIP & GE - i miss your playing guys
That was the best thing about this tour! It could never happen in the US that way. Herbie Hancock and the Rocket Band, Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie and the Gil Evans Orchestra with Jaco Pastorius. Those people were very luck!!! So was I !
Gil Evans TV you know me. I lived in Westbeth, played bass with Gil in 74-75,my sourdough bread recipe was imortalised by Gil in the Lincoln Center Cookbook. I love GIL AND STILL MUST LISTEN TO HIS RECORDS often. Love from Paris!
I do understand what you are saying If you are coming from solely a playing standpoint? I agree he was not at his peak on this tune. Just think this video is often misunderstood because of the mud (War paint) Keep in mind he was like a soloist on this tour, Mark Egan was also on Bass! Live the sound is rarely great and he had many both great and not as great moments both live and when we where hanging at Hotels, Clubs and backstage. I hope people will enjoy this video! It's a Historical Piece!
Man, these cats could play, they are really tearing it up here !! Thank you so much for posting this video, as I've heard about this concert for decades now !!
Thanks for this amazing video. I didn't really know Gil's music until saturday when I got to play C Blues at a jazz workshop (for amateurs), first listen I thought it was Jaco on bass but the session bassist is Marc Egan (didn't know about him). And here there both togheter on stage. I will surely explore Gil's recordings after seeing this ! thx again
my favorite Evans is Out of the Cool, it seems fresh, it swings, it rocks, it gets out there yet grooves, less formal more academic...it shows the more bohemian, adventurous sideof him...I haven´t heard it in a long time, I think I´ll slap it on
Additionally there are other great clips in this video and an interview with Gil that happens to be my favorite! So you do not have to view, but don't try to tell others what they should do! Gil could handle it! So that is good enough!
I was there. Because I loved Jaco for years and still I do. Actually that was one of the saddest concerts I've ever seen. Also, the editor of this crappy TV show definitely overdubbed something.
People are reading too much into things. Sure, he's obviously not in a good place here but he still plays absolutely face-meltingly well. Better than anybody before or after for that matter.
I really appreciate for posting this rare footage for I was 19 when my elder brother took me there. Surely a precious memory. But I have to admit it was one of the worst gigs I have ever witnessed. Jaco actually destroyed all the beauty of Gil’s arrangement and his band’s ensemble. I think most of audiences didn’t know he was on drug. So sad that drug took away such a great talent.
Never seen this before. Jaco seems to have been huge in Japan! I could have done without the lame beauty pagent type host. Why do they hire host that look as caucasian as possible? I love seeing ordinary beautiful asian looking host. Anyway Jaco got a rock star reception there unlike what he gets in the states. I saw him in a tiny club in nyc where people sat right near the stage and chatted while he was playing.
Hi! Thank you for uploading this video!!! I am wondering if the bass crushed at the end.... it's scary, a bit. i want to know more about this gig. You said that It was his quote "War Paint". He was still having fun at this point! Painting his body was an eccentricity or it was the start of the bipolar at this period?
According to his daughter, it was a huge turning point in his bipolar disease. This is when the shit really hit the fan. He would get busted riding a bide naked around Tokyo, and at one point pitched his bass into Yokohama Bay.
I know, i love him as a bass player and believe he was actually a good man... but i always thought in these times he was strange rather than so disdainful
@@JonHop1 You would want a loved one having a mental crisis recorded for the world to witness? You probably don't have anyone that gives a shyt about you, otherwise, I wouldn't have to explain this to you.🤡
What is sickening about this video is the ignorance of people laughing at Jaco. Then of course we have the internet doctors making evaluations in the comment section.
jacoholics will get there fix here. and that is all right sir. any jaco is great jaco right?? but how can anyone in there right mind say that he was being the greatest base player in the world here?? i'm sure he was having fun, but his old reputation as a great doesn't clear him from playing downright sloppy and unfocused like he does in this concert. i understand that you want to promote your video but come on sir...be realistic... he's at forty percent of his potential and that's being kind.
Ebenezer Zorewo if he wasn't the greatest bass player "here", does that mean he wasn't the greatest bass player? He was a music genius - who is obviously in trouble here. It's sad to see him like this when 5 short years before he was at the top of his game and on top of the world.
This is a great video clip!!!!

Two of NY legend genius, Jaco and Gill! I saw this live! It was peak of the peak of Japanese bubble economy...
...i saw Jaco playing with Weather Report many times when they visited the UK -what an amazing musician, but I also saw him after he left the band trying to talk his way into a gig, a situation that could have turned ugly when he realised he wasn't getting anywhere, luckily on that occasion someone behind the security line recognised him and they let him in...a few years later I was in an internet chat room with people discussing the whole 'jazz-fusion' era when the conversation turned to Jaco, many 'disappointing' views were expressed -he certainly was a controversial figure, usual, things you hear 'he was a junky' - 'his ego was over the top' etc but in that chat room one of his daughters spoke about him, with the sadness you would expect but she also spoke about him being undiagnosed bi-polar, something she also suffered with, and how he didn't get any support, who knows if he had a been a little better managed how much more he might have done...RIP & GE - i miss your playing guys
Even in his declining state he still kicked it! Love you Jaco
Oh My God! This really IS a Big, Beautiful, Noisy Jazzy Mess✌️ 💕
0:39 Jaco talking with Sly and Robbie. It's awesome that my heroes from opposite sides of the musical spectrum were connected!
That was the best thing about this tour! It could never happen in the US that way.
Herbie Hancock and the Rocket Band, Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie and the Gil Evans Orchestra with Jaco Pastorius.
Those people were very luck!!! So was I !
Beautiful moment...natural force of the caribbean, there are no photos of this meeting between Giants that i know of

This is the thing I Respect about Jaco.
He Study Music History.
He Knew the Real Truth.....

He may not have been easy, but he was also the best bass player in the world!!!
And still is.
Never been on a tour that diverse before or since.
Great stuff!

Con Mucho Gusto!
Yes!
You are Correct!!
a true star
Lew Soloff - lead trumpet!
Yes!
The concert he played just after he had to go in the Hiroshima castle ´s lake to get his bass that he threw in the day before.
Very Sam and beautyfull
That's why he was covered in mud. It's so obvious now.
From the sound of the last bit, his bass hit the stage or amp with an aweful thud. That's the story of Jaco though, long live the King Of Bass.
People are reading too much into things. Sure, he's obviously not in a good place here but he still plays absolutely face-meltingly well. Better than anybody before or after for that matter.
Hannibal Peterson solo! and Lew Soloff High Notes!
I agree Jaco was no idiot!
Wild yes, idiot no!

Don Cherry? I remember that Marvin Peterson was there as well. Geroge E. Lewis and Lou, Miles (Gil'S son) it was so damn gorgeous.
You know what they say about opinions.
JACO !
so much video could be existed on dvd. must!
jaco is painted ? I believe bill milkowski wrote a thing about that.

From what I heard his bipolarism really showed itself in 1982-Japan Tour with WOM. It got more out of control from then
I have it on good authority Jaco would always catch it.
What's Adam Nusbaum doing these days? I saw him back in 1999 with Steve Swallow's band in Ronnie Scotts but hardly see his name of any recordings.
Is this anywhere, I wonder, in better quality?
💛☺️🌳🏵️
I wondering, did they plan the solos ahead of time? It looked like JACO was summoning players on stage
Does Anyone Have the Songs and Times so I know what the Song is?...
Woww ,: 0
7:05 TOTALLY nailing that ending. Hahaha. You know they were cursing Jaco under their breath after that.
lolzzz
Totemo iiiiii desu!
😀🐥🐞💚
God. This chicken was everywhere around that time 🤦♂️😂
Clearly you can see at this stage of his life
Pastorius has lost it!!! really sad to see his downward spiral!!
What's going on with the soloists?
I know, i love him as a bass player and believe he was actually a good man... but i always thought in these times he was strange rather than so disdainful
Jaco chats with Black Uhuru, thats unique!!!
This is so sad to see.
I can only hope that his children and loved ones were spared this, some things are not meant to be posted.
what the heck are you talking about?
@@JonHop1 You would want a loved one having a mental crisis recorded for the world to witness?

so that famous change key thing was planned?
バラカン若いね。😁
There’s one guy messing up the music with repetitive noise.
Soul Intro/The Chicken(Pee Wee Ellis);
Why the he'll was he covered in mud!? Love Jaco
Because he just had a psychotic break.
What's up with Jaco's 'look?'
Georges Lewis trombone.
Jaco literally influenced Egan to play fretless
Not a good time for Jaco, from what I've heard. It may have been on this tour that he threw his bass into Tokyo Bay?
Cant believe he threw the fucking bass so high up in the air lkke that lol
ayy_lmao_420 Yes he did!
And to be honest that was just one of many unbelievable things he did just on this short 2 week tour.
+GilEvansTV
What other events happened? please elaborate
everyone shoud steer away from this! the poor jaco was not well here :(
0:39 only good moment!
==>> 5:08
he was no an idiot, he was clearly sick
Jaco was sadly fucked up at that point of his life...
Why is he covered in that mess?
What is sickening about this video is the ignorance of people laughing at Jaco. Then of course we have the internet doctors making evaluations in the comment section.
Hum?

19:57 ジャコ、さすがにベースぶっ壊れるだろwww
そこがまあジャコなんだろうけどw
体中泥塗って演奏したり、ジャコが奇行が目立ち始めた頃ではあったんだよね。
Hannibal cRaZy
I don't like the way this was edited.
This clip came directly from the the festival, we did not edit it in any way!
Trumpet is out of control. Should take a lesson from Randy Brecker
Strange comment. Control?
