  • Welcome to Crimson Guitars ua-cam.com/users/CrimsonC...
    In this episode, Ben Crowe, luthier at www.crimsonguitars.com goes through the entire process of installing a 2 axis MIDI controlling touch screen from AmpTone Lab, into a client's Godin guitar. (Please Note: Crimson Guitars no longer sells these systems.)
    The XY MIDIpad controller is most commonly used to control a Korg Kaoss pad by artists like Muse's Matt Bellamy, however, they can be programmed to control everything from a keyboard to a digital wah pedal.
    Using Amptone Labs superb kit the installation process is relatively straightforward, as long as you can use a router effectively and don't mind cutting holes in your guitar. You don't have to know very much at all about electronics, as it's all been made as fool-proof as possible.
    Chapters

    0:37 Preparing to cut the holes into the guitar
    2:32 The conundrum - finding somewhere to place the MIDIpad controls?

    5:54 Wiring cavity and now the hardware begins to go in.

    i never use effects and have been a firm believer in the guitar and amp doing all of the work for your tone, but i am really impressed by all this new technology. i have a feeling that these new ideas will make young kids more attracted to guitars instead of dj/computer equipment, and for that reason, i support it.

    You absolutely can, the MIDI controller could be mounted on a box and still do its job properly, it's not actually connected to the electronics of the guitar or bass in any way.. and you sure could have some fun with the end result!

    We are the UK Amptone Lab distributors now and you can get them directly from our online shop, we could also fit the kit for you for £165... all in you're looking at around £285 fully installed.

    the xy MIDIpad costs £115 plus postage, if you want it installed you will have to send us the guitar (postage varies depending on where you are, we are in Somerset UK) and the installation costs an extra £155.. basically £270 plus postage costs.

    I had a lot of people who follow the daily photo stream (facebook/twitter etc) who said the same thing but in the end it comes down to creating the instrument the client wants and if they have a few grand for me to cut into that's their call.. I would draw the line at a 'good' les paul or the like but didn't feel too guilty this time round.. the clients happy and I got good footage for a video.. alls good. thanks for following us :)

    Personally I always prefer a simple guitar, well made and with a great amp, however some people do like this sort of guitar with built in effects and a MIDI controller. The only thing you said that was factually incorrect is about 'computers doing it for you'.. with the xy MIDIpad you have control of a Kaoss pad, digitech whammy or PC.. the only difference is that it is built into the guitar rather than in the studio.

    Amptone Lab sell all over the world and are priced very reasonably, currently at EUR139 for the big unit and EUR129 for the smaller, plus shipping of course.. good luck with your build :)

  • @WolfieboyMachi

    Really cool, but the old-school imagery of the guitar clashes completely with the modern/futuristic look of the pad (particularly with stuff like the LED ring). It would fit a lot more on a more modern, clean looking guitar, imo.
    But still -- awesome. :)

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    Yes, you can install a MIDI pad in your strat, though it would have to be the slightly smaller 'mini' due to the space issue.. Same capability but smaller screen. Both will be available in the new Crimson Guitars estore in the next week or two :-)

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    I have really long drill bits that allow me to get in at the right angle, alternatively you can drill through using the jack socket as access if you need to go from the side of the guitar..

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    As a musician (of sorts I suppose) I personally agree whole-heartedly, a good amp, good guitar and lead is all you really need.. I've been debating whether the tone control is even really essential! On a guitar building level however I'm willing to facilitate anything so long as the end result is attractive and playable. I am thinking about building a small ipad type device in a guitar one day for on board fx and recording.. but that's probably one step too far!? Thanks for watching!

    I'm really not a MIDI expert but the best on board MIDI system I've ever used is the Ghost acoustiphonic/hexaphonic combination.. bonus being you get an awesome piezo sound that would sound PHAT with a fretless! Easy to install too and the board is about 2" by 1 1/2" so not big by any means :) hope this helps!

    Fully installed and including a battery box and standard knob (bits that don't ship with the kit) I usually charge £325, though it may vary a little depending on the guitar.. each one has an individual personality, some are kind to luthiers some not so! :-) Thanks for watching!

  • @lordsidious911

    I believe the reason for the wires pointing away from pots, is so that the screen is always oriented the same, when the ribbon is attached, so your Y axis isn't reverse.

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  12 років тому

    They do build a slightly smaller version that fits better on strats but yes it can work on any guitar.. The MIDIpad can control most any MIDI device you want but it's best to talk to Amptone Lab themselves for the specifics on how that would work. Thanks for watchin :-)

    Oh I will, I'm an Android man and as soon as their ecosystem has enough of the right apps I'll be building in a small touch pad.. Though maybe a pc or linux based tablet pc would do just as well? Fun fun fun!!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    Yes we could.. we're in Somerset, UK. supplying and fitting the xy pad costs £285, supplying and installing a humbucker sized sustainer system costs £325, so all in it would be £610... if you do both jobs at the same time though I'll knock off £25..

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  12 років тому

    You need a MIDI lead plugged in to the Kaos pad fro the guitar and a jack lead from the guitar to the Kaoss pad.. but you can control all the settings from the guitar.. select the sound you want the volume and the hold button.. it's all good!

    YES I KNEW IT!
    I SAW THE BODY WITH THE CUT OUT IN YOUR HOW TO VIDEO!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    It can be fitted in a carved top guitar if you route a cavity for the surround as well as the screen etc, or you could build up one end of the body with a bit of wood that's flat on top but carved to match the body on the other.. alternatively a les paul junior or similar may well fit the bill.., they have flat tops?

  • @jacobcardoza922
    @jacobcardoza922 10 років тому

    Crimson Custom Guitars, I have a question. At the end of the video you show the 9v battery powering the touch midi controller on the guitar. May I ask where you put that on the guitar? I would assume it would be a accessible cavity in the back, but I want to be sure before I install. Thanks!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    We absolutely could install the system for you, although it really is pretty straight forward to do and any luthier who has seen this video and is able to do his job properly should be able to do it fine.. postage of the guitar back and forth could be pretty damn expensive! I'll ask around though. I would appreciate it if you bought the unit through my shop though.. every little helps and we deliver quickly!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    You absolutely could build an MIDI controlling touch screen into a bass guitar.. it would probably be a first! Anyway, no physical reason why not to at all and you could certainly have some fun with the final result!

  • @ShiftyMocasins
    @ShiftyMocasins 11 років тому

    Very helpful video! Thank you so much! I have a question though. I'm planning on having one of these installed, and while every luthier is different I'm sure, how kuch did you charge to install it? And how much do you think I should expect to pay to have one installed? I'm in the states and I've heard some fair sounding quotes to some outrageous ones...just looking for some more input :) thanks!

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    Hey Matt, it does need a battery.. I don't concentrate on that in this video but it's a standard 9 volt one in the back..

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    you can put this system in an acoustic although you would have to jury rig some way to suspend the LED in the right place.. I would suggest that may be a job for a luthier as you would have to worry about brace positions and strength etc how handy are you with tools?

  • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
    @CrimsonCustomGuitars  11 років тому

    We need to know the measurements behind the bridge to see whether you want the standard or mini xy MIDIpad fitted. The standard one is 128mm x 107mm and the smaller is 98 x 76mm. If you draw these on some paper and cut it out you will see whether you have enough space on your guitars top for our system.

    Is it possible for me to do this on my Ibanez Jem7V prestige (steve vai signature model)? It doesn't have a lot of body so i definitely need the smaller version, but i'd also like to implement a sustainer and a killswitch. that would make such an awesome and futuristic guitar in my opinion. But i suppose that's easier said than done. Any recommendations on this? because i know it won't be easy, and where'd all the wiring go on an already pretty thin guitar.

    have you ever tried using a smaller screen and putting it below the strings, so you could play the strings normally but control the screen with your little finger? most mods seem to put them where you cant reach
    also, im curious why so much wood is routed for the box with the circuit in it? wouldnt the screen be more solid if only enough space was routed to fit the circuit. you wouldnt want to put your finger through that when your rocking out!

    Is it possible to connect a Kaoss Pad to a Pedal Board and use the MIDI controller then?
