      Agreed. Though I have to admit I thought the distortion tone was quite nice but I wanted to hear it plugged directly into a Marshall tube stack without the Midi on. Not that I have anything against the demo or the guitarist as I thought it was cool for what was done rather what it would've sounded like. Damn the accountant got it. Taxes, eh Ben? LoL ;)

      Yeah, all I ever seem to want is a nice guitar and, when necessary, some good old fashioned overdriven tubes. I also agree. You've smartened up a cheap kit guitar by spending a fortune in parts and time on it. We poorer builders can never afford that equipment and tooling. The Telecaster is the working mans axe. This is a toy and could never be gigged in a pub. Perhaps its just a show piece as it's made very well, but at what total cost with man hours ? US$3000.00 ?

    Horrendous tone he's getting there... I hate to nay-say, but if you're going to all of that trouble putting a beautiful top on a telecaster, the last thing in the world you should do is jam a midi pad into the thing. Nothing against the technology, it's just on the wrong guitar.

    • @Diniles
      @Diniles 8 років тому +2

      You ever seen Matt Bellamy's guitars -which is the kind of thing they're basing this off? It has the tele shape, and that's it. They're not trying to make a telecaster-sounding guitar at all. Plus, consider that the PUPs are a still the POS of they were using - they haven't done anything about them yet, so it should sound better once it's not outfitted with £5 pickups

    • @jesse_cole
      @jesse_cole 8 років тому

      diniles Cool... and my opinion is that if they're not trying to make a "telecaster-sounding guitar," then they should have either bought a different kit (one that isn't a telecaster) or at least not bothered to do all that woodwork/add the attractive top (which really only makes sense on a "telecaster-sounding" guitar)... especially if they're just going to ruin the nice top that they just made by carving a giant rectangle into it for a fucking computer. But I can at least agree that the tone would be much improved without the 5 pound (don't have that symbol on my keypad here in America) pickups.
      PS. no I haven't seen Matt Bellamy's guitars, and I think you've just convinced me not to check them out.

    • @Diniles
      @Diniles 8 років тому +2

      Jesse Cole I agree that woodwork is something more traditional style - but, if who says that just because a guitar has the shpe of a tele, it has to be a tele, have tele tone etc? I agree, I actually don't particularly like the xy pad, but "the guitar's a tele" is not reason that they can't make it into something muse-styled.Why does it only make sense to have a nice top on a tele-style guitar? Metal doesn't have to be played on a matte-black guitar with an angled headstock, country doesn't have to be played on a butterscotch tele (though metal through a tele would be a better better than country through an explorer I think ;) )

    • @jesse_cole
      @jesse_cole 8 років тому +6

      diniles I'm just stating my opinion. I don't like carving a giant hole in a tele with an attractive top. I think it's a waste. The midi pad, to me, makes the guitar look cheap... the _top_ gave the guitar the potential to look very nice. It's a contrast. Like ketchup on ice cream. It doesn't belong there.

    • @Diniles
      @Diniles 8 років тому +1

      Jesse Cole I have to agree about the top. Whilst I didn't like the top itself, it does seem that the midi pad contrasts with it rather badly. However, I didn't like the top at all in the first place, so there's not much I can say really...

    I wish I had watched this last video before watching the previous 20... I thought this would show how a cheap £80 guitar could be improved by using woodworking skills, veneers and upgraded components. I was a little disappointing to hear the final result having thrown around £420 worth of electronics that makes this sound more like a synthesizer rather than a traditional guitar. You've promised an update so we can hear what the guitar sounds like without the midi stuff, so where is video 22 in the series ?

    Did my best to be supportive here of a custom build, and walked away less than thrilled. While I "get" that the technology is some kind of enhancement for the guitar, it comes off as ugly and awkward. Hate if you want, but this is a waste of what could have been a beautiful tele-style guitar.

    Such good value and I have enough to do 20 guitars!! Enough for a lifetime!

    Disappointed to have spent the last couple of hours watching this guitar being built to not actually hear it? Despite some long winded commentary, (Yes we know this is a cheap £80 kit, how many times did you have to tell us.) The saving grace is your apprentice, and of course one day getting to hear how it actually sounds. Did you turn a cheap kit into something beautiful? Otherwise thanks for all 21 videos. Wow, talk about a marathon guitar build series! I started out thinking it was going to be 3 parts. Great attention to detail -- I learned a lot. Thanks! It would be nice if the light diffuser came in black. I'm pretty sure you could get those buttons in gold from a electronics supply house ...or else disassemble them and send off to a gold electroplating house. I like how you customized the head of the neckstock. How about hearing how clean it can sound? Thanks again.

    I'm a cue maker and thinking about making a kit guitar myself and doing it up a bit so this video series was perfect for me. The midi thingy effects were good with bad sound. Frank Marino was doing that with regular effects forty years ago with awesome tone, then again he's about the best there's ever been.
    That would have been a very pretty guitar with a gold bigsby on it, and one side of the top was lighter than the other and needed more coats of oil to match it, something you should have picked up on to be honest, apart from that excellent, thanks.

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  3 роки тому

      the cut of the wood changes how it looks when book-matched.. basically one half of it is absorbing more light than the other and it changes depending on the light, nothing can be done when this happens, you will see this on many acoustics too.. B

    Having literally spent my evening watching all 21 parts in order I have come to the following conclusions :
    1) Don't buy a DIY telecaster unless you happen to also have a woodworking shop handy. And some skills. And a dogsbody.
    2) If you do, somehow, have the above, don't ruin it by sticking a giant gimmick into the arse end.
    3) Don't overglue your binding. Don't use the guitar as a bench.
    Otherwise, very informative and entertaining (Clearly, I watched them all back to back). But lordy stay far away from a DIY guitar, particularly if (like I did) you got an F in woodwork.

    Franky i enjoyed the build very much, but the sound results... yeah... My old Korg synthesizers can do that to. Being a pretty clean blues guitar player, in my ears it has not much to do with guitars anymore. You can do the same with a Roland Keytar and they are around since midi. Or with a Korg Kaossilator, even the little yellow one.
    Nevertheless i learned a lot about building guitars for my first try. But that will be an old fashioned one,...... with a Bigsby.

Yeah, it was about five times more work than I'd want to put into a hundred-dollar kit, but it did indeed achieve its stated purpose! I have to agree with those who felt it was a bit over the top, the Midi is cool but that's what Mighty Odin invented keyboard players with synthesizers for, IMHO. I could certainly see doing much of this on a "parts built" guitar -- y'know, one in which you select your own parts from the jump, rather than start with a POS that needs everything replaced and/or worked on. But as I said, a wonderful series! I spent the last couple days just watching it. Thanks Ben, Howard, and all!

    I'm certain that the next St pepper will be written on a guitar like this. NOT
    Dan Earliwine would have had a heart attach watching this "about HERE BUILD"
    What a wast of time and a truly beautiful basic guitar!

    Just discovered this playlist, what a beauty of a guitar it became! The top, the binding, but the highlight for me anyway definitely is the custom pickup surround, wow! Of course the midi pad thingy is not for everyone, but I think you showed really well, how far you can take a cheap kit guitar.

    Learned a lot. That kaoss pad thing is amazing. My only concern is all the tools you would need to buy to do such a conversion on your own guitar- routers, grinders sanders drills etc. You could buy a custom guitar cheaper. Do any luthier workshops let you rent time by the hour or day?

    Ive enjoyed this series.. but. would like to hear how the guitar itself sounds.. not just the midi feature. how does it play/sound without all the effects on?

  • @rezzzo76
    @rezzzo76 6 років тому

    Pretty neat effect, but I'm not really sure I would want that big white square on the top of my guitar. Then again, i'm not real big on digital effects. Would have been nice to hear the guitar without that midi pad on, and with standard tuning. I'm not real big on drop tuning either. The way I see it, if you want to play in D, then tune all of the strings down to D standard. But that's just me,...

    Great series.......I really enjoyed the first 20 parts and the idea of turning a sows ear into a silk purse.........the midi demo was proof the electronics function........I wish you would do another demo to see what the electrics sound like....................I was interested in hearing your choice of "tele" pick-ups in their three settings.............what would the riffs from "working Man blues" or "Misty" or "Sandman" or "Mistery Train" or "Funk 49" or even "Purple Haze" sound like? (compared to a "stock" tele) ..........................that beautiful instrument is screaming - play ME ...........................JRW

  • @Madas905

    Does it actually play well though. I would have been interested to hear it played just on amp settings, no pedals, no power chords. Thought it could be road tested a bit better.

      I disagree, in this video you can hear the guitar and the processing that is happening together. This way it helps someone understand the power and versatility this set up offers. It's not how great this guitar sounds, it's what it can do. If you want to hear a how a guitar sounds through an amp go play one.
