The one thing I admire most about Ben and his work, is that he will readily admit when he is wrong, even if it is after the fact, and then post corrections for the sake of accuracy.

Great video. This kind of tedious work is what sets great builders ahead of the rest. You made this inlay look fairly easy. It’s not easy by any means. The guitar will be a one of a kind work of art that the owner will be proud to own.

My PRS Torero hasn't got any inlays at all, just the dots on the top and I was getting lost with low lighting at my gig last night. I didn't realise how reliant I am on the inlays for positioning. Was gonna get an inlay job, after watching this vid though, I'm gonna tackle it myself. I'll practice on some hacks first of course.
Thanks a lot, great vid and pleasant to watch and listen too.
    Cheers

It was such a clean break that it was invisible when glued, I added new front and back headstock veneers for extra strength though, 6 years on the guitar is as stable as ever.. I was lucky, very very lucky! Seeing this comment in the email it looked like it was someone saying the inlay in this video was soooo bad I had to replace the headstock! Context is everything hey?

Great work, and an absolutely riveting video! I have in the past made jewellery with aluminium & rosewood inlay work, and also had many tense moments with a jeweller's saw, so I appreciate the skill and patience involved....
Amazingly, (despite my horror) you managed to make the PRS relicing just as fascinating!

Yeah.... Cyanoacrylate doesn't stick well to *waxy* plastic, like polythene bottles or tops. But does stick really well to hard *dry* plastics, like acrylic or polycarbonate.
Of course, as with all inlaying, the more accurate your first cut, the less likelihood of requiring wood filler to finish.
Still looks good at the finishing end.
    Thumbs up, as always.

Oh yes! It happens, once I had a fully strung guitar hung upside down from the ceiling while we got a case out.. the hook fell out and the headstock split clean off as it hit the deck! I was so pissed off I didn't even swear or shout at the guy who hung it up, I just went off for a walk saying 'don't worry about it' .. he thought I'd had a psychotic break, sometimes silence is scarier I suppose..

Hi, I am not a guitar building but i am interested in wood working, so this is how i came accross your web-page. The procedure that you have done on this guitar have you done a veneer on the side of headstock, if so do you use a normal veneer or is there a special veneer. I must say that i have found the work that you do, not only an excellent help but it is also very hipnotic.
    Best Regards
    Roger

Great video. I truly appreciate you showing how it is done with hand tools. I never knew about cut to cut technique. I really hate routers and dremels, and always wanted to do inlay with hand tools. Could you do more intricate inlay using chisels and knives? Say for instance, something along the lines of Martin snowflake inlay, or tree of life type inlay in an ebony board? Just curious because I want to get into inlaying with hand tools myself.
    Best,
    Jonas

I must admit I have been watching your videos for years but never subscribed because you went on with these seemingly endless spiels but never really saw much work going on,however lately you are revealing to us some of your trade secrets and low and behold you are a craftsman. I heard you talking before of making a guitar for Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame a guitarist I greatly admire ,by the way, are they still making music ? I've been out of touch with the rock/jazz culture for some time. It's great work you do best regards

ive never done any inlay work on a guitar, but ive done inlay on other things. and ive tried dremel router attachments and just holding the cable tool end. massive pain in the ass.
IMO, do it by hand, unless you have access to a micro precision CNC router.

  • @HBSuccess

Hello Ben - these videos are fantastic. Have you tried something like a Foredom rotary tool or high-speed dentist tool to clean out the inlay cavity? I've been hand-cutting but am thinking about using a knife for the outline but a machine for the field of the inlay. Thoughts? I see guys hand-holding those device - my fear is one slip and the job is ruined.

is it possible to use the chisel instead of a router if I want to put an inlay on a maple Stratocaster headstock? this looks "easy" on a veneer but I don't know if it will have good results on Maple.

How long did it take to think about your logo? It must be really a painful for a luthier to choose a complex logo in the beginning and always got the work with the crazy inlay.
Yours is simple, but still nice.

I have a question. I'd like to hide the holes for my neck pickup and volume control knob.
Which is the best glue that I could use in order to add fill the holes with wood and glue it to the body.
I asked a couple of luthiers but they are all rather busy and I do not like to wait.
    Thanks.

Hey ben got a question, so I'm needing to fill a small "check" on a highly figured black walnut body I'm building, I've mixed up some filler and tested on a piece of scrap with excellent results. Question is, will there be any problems with the finish over that area? any info would be sweet, also what kind of finish was used on that gorgeous PAF "elm" guitar, different wood & style than what i'm building but has a very similar pattern to the grain thanks

Azazul Soulmeister depends on the situation, sometimes you can use wood filler to raise it up a little, other times you can cut out a rough shape of your inlay out of scrap and put that underneath it. just make sure you fill in any voids underneath the inlay with whatever you’re using to bind it
