Sorry about Karen, She seems to be everywhere these days. I'm fairly sure 14 years old is old enough for the birds and the bees talk.. or in this case maybe the reptiles and the monotremes?
As soon as I heard the story about the mom and the 14-year-old, I was immediately brought back to one of my favorite memories: I couldn't have been more than 10 years old, probably more like 7. I've always loved animals, so my grandmother would very frequently take me to a zoo nearby when I was staying with her. I would, of course, frequently be a good distance ahead of her, but she knew that I wouldn't do anything too outlandish for the setting. It was a zoo that catered to children, so moderate amounts of noise and activity weren't uncommon. I've always been a cat person, so I was always happy to see the big cats. But today would be especially exciting. Something you have to understand is that my family has always been comfortable discussing anatomy. As a result, I knew the process by which reproduction happened at a younger age than most. This led to many interesting stories, but this one is unique in how prominent it was. As I approach the enclosure, I see a male lion on top of a lioness. How thrilling it is that we get a chance to observe this behavior! I didn't want my grandmother to miss out on this behavior that isn't usually observed by the public audience, so naturally I turn around and at the top of my lungs yell "GRANDMA HURRY, COME LOOK! THE LIONS ARE MATING!" before racing ahead to get a better look. Did I need to later have it explained to me that it's considered impolite to talk about reproductive behaviors in public? Yes. Was I confused at that? Also yes. Was it mortifying for my grandmother? I'm sure. (Although this is nothing compared to some of the things my mom did in college.) All in all I'm very grateful. Not only that I got to have that educational experience, but also that I have such a communicative and understanding family.
My grandparents were kind of odd. I understood animal mating behavior at a very young age (grew up surrounded by farm animals) so I knew exactly how babies were made. Yet the human process was a scandalous subject. My grandmother pulled me into the bathroom (house was completely empty) and explained periods to me in a whisper (again we were completely alone in the house) when I was 8. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience. It was so weird that my family could be both so open and also so closed off at the same time. My kids will definitely know about the birds and the bees from a young age. They will also learn about human anatomy and reproduction as soon as they begin asking questions. No shame attached.
karens are so weird smh like you see this kind of thing all the time in nature anyways. As if kids this age didnt know. Like theres this 7 year old kid i know and he was (with his family) in our house to watch a movie and we thought the movie was safe but then there was a sex scene. That rascal just started laughing, as in it knew he's not suposed to see this, while we were trying to find the remote lol. I think parents shouldnt "force" this "knowledge" on their kids, just let it happen accidentally
I had a friend about a year younger than me, who had a mom who was COMPLETELY off the wall bonkers controlling about her daughters learning ANYTHING about sex or reproduction. It wasn't even a religious thing, it was just this weird- like SUPER weird total denial of it and refusal to talk about it at all. I had to teach my friend about periods myself when I was 12, and like ALL kids with parents like that do, she came to me to ask me a question one day. She had overheard someone use a certain word that started with the word master, and ended with ation.... she didn't know what that word was. She asked me. I told her. Of course I did! I was a GOOD friend who KNEW THINGS! Also she already knew what... that particular action was, she just didn't know the WORD for it. After I told her, she suddenly paused, her eyes went wide, and she looked over at me and in a breathless, devious voice, she said "Watch *this*." She got up, went out to the kitchen where her mom was working on dinner, and in the sweetest, most innocent sweet girl voice I have EVER heard out of another human being, she said, "Mommy? What's (THAT WORD)?" (censoring cause I know there are much younger kiddos on the channel sometimes). Her moms eyes just about BUGGED OUT OF HER HEAD! She gasped out loud, started spluttering and fumbling her words, and asking where my friend heard that from, ("Two boys on the bus said it and I didn't know what it meant...?") and then she managed to blurt out that it "wasn't anything she needed to know about" and to "go play with her toys". She came back into the room and we just started cackling, busting up with laughter. Pro tip parents... teach your kids about this stuff. Let them know what words mean. It not only helps them recognize innapropriate behavior from others, but also will help them communicate with you if they ever suffer any abuse. It will also teach them what's happening so they can AVOID IT HAPPENING TO THEM... My friends little sister, because she had ZERO education, ended up pregnant by 15. My friend had a kid by 18. Because they'd both not been taught anything, and had gone off to learn/figure it all out themselves. Teach your children about their bodies!
To be honest I think people overreact. I guess saying things like "mating" could be triggering for a very select few people, but then again, they likely wouldn't be at a zoo anyways. Or if they were, at that point, either they made a huge oversight or they had it coming. Lol. There's really nothing wrong with saying the word in public, in my opinion.
Wow the mom that got upset should have just took her daughter and walked away and looked at something else like how could yall help that but love yalls channel very educational in my opinion
Besides, the kid was 14 apparently. From my experience, sex ed in school usually starts in like 7th grade anyway, so the mom was just being paranoid lol. Did she seriously expect her teen kid to not already know that animals do it too?
@@unbekannternutzer25 Yeah, I guess that’s true. The kid could be homeschooled or go to a school that teaches none or abstinence-only sex ed or something like that. You would think she still would’ve learned about it by now, maybe from an internet source or whatnot. If she genuinely hasn’t, I feel bad for her for being sheltered this much. Young people like her not being allowed to learn about this stuff properly before they go out and do it is why the US has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies sadly.
I feel so sorry for the 14yr old, especially since there's a good chance that she might see the video and the comments, let's all be nice. I'm sure most of us experienced "What the hell is up with you, mom/dad? Was that really necessary? IN PUBLIC?!" moments when we were that age, no matter how perfect or imperfect our parents usually were 😁
I only feel sorry for the girl for having parents like that as its unlikely she'll be able to get access to a good sex education which everyone should be entitled to for their own health. The only person who should embarrassed about their childish behaviour is the mother herself.
No no. I wished someone bashed the hell out of my parents for being crazy. It would have made me feel better rather than having everyone ignore their stupid behavior.
I am all for educating kids about sex ed from the very beginning. I still don't get why people think they need to be an appropriate age to learn something perfectly natural that almost all species do. If they don't understand the basics, how can you possibly encourage them to have ethics, health, and safety in mind when they hit puberty? I also don't understand how someone thinks they can keep their daughter "pure" when the girl in question does not even know what it is? That said, we should respect the mother's right to raise her child the way she wants to, because every child is different and matures at a different rate. It's not realistic to complain, but nothing is stopping her from steering her daughter away from seeing it.
I'm so excited that all the animals seem to be so happy and comfortable in their enclosures. It's a testament to how well you did design your zoo. As for the mother... What does she think happens at a zoo? Most zoos breed animals in some compacity or another. If you're that uncomfortable, don't look. I wish the world hadn't become so uncomfortable with a completely natural interaction. I just hope that her child has someone they can talk to. If two lizards breeding are to shocking for mom then I find it hard to believe there's much open communication when it comes to safe sex or preventing pregnancy.
... I'm tempted to suggest the zoo keep some pamphlets or cards with say sites about planning parenthood or scarleteen on them for occasions like this. Not for the parent, that likely won't help. Altho it would be funny. Just... Accessible. Tho that's above and beyond their purview
Your channel has done so much for me emily and ed! When im older I want to go to herpetologly school and be a snake breeder! And I laughed when you said that the mom got mad because her 14 year old daughter saw monitor's breeding. Lol
I can't be the only one who feels very bad for a 14 y/o whose parents thinks they are too young to know about animal breeding. Like they should have had the talk a long time before that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those parents who believes they don't need the talk until 18 or they get married.
I won’t be surprised if the 14 year old gets pregnant later on and it immediately disowned by her family. Sad scenario but this happens more than you think.
Honestly if nobody has taught her and she genuinely doesn't know what it is by that age that's a really bad thing, that's how kids get pregnant at 12/13 because they don't know what they are doing and what the consequences are so a boy could easily talk them into it etc. It happens far more often than you'd think unfortunately and it's the reason health education is so important
yeah i don't get it when i was kindergarten we had police men/women and nurses visiting frequently and with the teacher on how to ask/react in some situation for help if a mister shown us his penis or offer candies to prevent rape and kidnappings EVERY WEEKS (i was 5 ) .it was in the 90 in Canada Quebec ! We sure did learn the proper body parts names LOL
The story about the mom is so funny and it reminds me of my own story. When I was a small child and was visiting a local wildlife zoo a seagull flew into the bear enclosure during the public feeding. It was trying to steal some of the bear food but instead it became the food... Won't go into too much detail but there was a lot of blood, a lot of crying children, and a lot of complaining parents. I was kind of shocked but my parents just explained to me in a really good way that it's part of nature. My parents are great
Good on your parents for using that as an opportunity to educate you. I think it does a real disservice to children to try to hide everything from them, instead of helping them learn about and understand the world.
Reminds me of my daughter seeing a video of an orca at seaworld tossing fish out of the water to bait the birds to come closer. The orca got a tasty feathery snack, and my daughter's eyes were so wide, lol.
@@millenial90 My mom is a teacher so she is both smart and great with kids. She was also raised on a farm where they bred and slaughtered their own cattle and she has never been shy about telling me where our food comes from. When the seagull died she just told me that it was okay to feel bad about it but in the end it's nature and animals need food as well.
gotta love a mum getting annoyed about nature happening in front of a whole damn teenager. like, maybe I'd understand up to like 11 years old but by her age she's probably catching onto how that works, I know I was.
Funny thing is that young kids won't even understand what the monitors are doing until the adults start acting weirdly. It could honestly have been an educational moment than an awkward one.
I know. This is just a natural thing that can happen at any zoo really. It's kind of like " What do you expect? Just have them sitting and playing cards?". Besides, she's around that age where she probably knows that stuff, at least here in the States.
It really is a testament to the naturalness of the enclosures that the animals are breeding. I'd like to say I was surprised about the mom but as Forrest Gump would say, "Stupid is as stupid does". I do feel sorry for the child.

Imagine being mad about animals mating. On the one hand it'd be kinda rude to stereotype that as typical North American behaviour (I know they've got many, many subcultres over there), on the other hand I've never heard so many stories of people trying to be prudish about nature as I have from the US. Really just a silly behaviour wherever it turns up. Animals gonna be animals.
@@uncabob214 The irony of this is that in the US, sex ed usually starts sometime in junior high (7th-8th grade or so, at least from my experience), so unless this Karen homeschools her kid or the kid goes to a private Catholic school that only teaches abstinence, the 14 yo definitely already knows about how nature works for both humans and animals lol
I thank you for your phrase "incubate till there's no debate". I do propagating with plants and I know for a fact that I would have thrown out some of the props (simply because they began to rot before they even grew roots but I was unsure) that have now become beautiful babies.

I don't want to believe that some Karen complained about animals mating, but I can totally see it happening. People need to realize that there is some law of the universe that at some point when you take your kid to a zoo, it's going to be mating season for some species of animal, and your kid is going to see it! This seems to have happened to everyone I know when they were kids. (for me it was penguins). But to complain about your 14-year-old seeing two lizards getting it on? Seriously, I guarantee that kid looked up far worse on the internet.
Every time I watch a video of yours it makes my day, whether its a new video or watching an old one. I am so happy to see that your breeding projects are taking. I am also very excited to see the cute little ackie babies

Well It's technically turning "spring" so the chickens start laying based off mainly the molts if they have finished and if they know spring will be soon-ish.
Exciting!!! Also interesting to learn that schools closed in that temperature. Did a little conversion and that would be -31C. Last week everything was business as usual at -35C XD it's always so interesting to me how different areas handle similar situations. The only time we would shut down is heavy snow storm which happened yesterday and we're still dealing with the 40-60cm drop. It's going to ice over in the next few days as rain is coming. Such an intense winter already. 😣
Schools in my area of the US close for extreme amounts of snow that the plows can’t clear to make the commute safe in a reasonable amount of time (a meter or so) or in temperatures too low for students to safely wait at a bus stop. Usually the buses also have trouble running at those temps because they use diesel fuel.
It's definitely interesting how different places react to different scenarios. I'm from the south (southern United States). We rarely see snow and only drop below freezing a few days per year. Six inches of snow can shut down an entire town here. Possibly less. Mostly because we never see snow so when we do everyone panics. Even mention the possibility of snow and the grocery stores get wiped out like it's the end of days. I always found the last part funny because even the biggest snows are usually melted within a day or two, four at the absolute max.
It depends on the type of buildings and the area. Last year my whole region was shut down for a week because a weird week of snow and ice. Like it was in the -12Cs and there was no power or water in my apartment because we are built for the 30Cs . It was coldest it been in the area in over 75 years. Today we were 28.3C but tomorrow night we are suppose to be 4C. I'm hoping it doesn't freeze like last year.
How can they make kids go to school when its that cold? Classes get canceled here at that temp because its not safe for kids to wait outside for the bus. Not all kids have sufficient winter gear or parents that can drive them so they close in extreme temps usually.

9:51 One time when I was in high school (this was at least 15 years ago), they were supposed to close the schools when the wind chill got to -25F. The wind chill got to -24F. They kept school open. They never excused my absences from the 3 classes I didn't go to that day. (What, like not wanting to get FROSTBITE is somehow not a valid excuse?!) If you cant tell, I'm still bitter about all this. This happened in Michigan (just a few states over from where you are!)
This brought back a great memory- we were at Chessington (a theme park in the U.K.) and my cousin sees pair of tortoises on top of each other ((clearly having a good time)) and shouts very loudly “the tortoises are humping!!!” 😂

After I told her, she suddenly paused, her eyes went wide, and she looked over at me and in a breathless, devious voice, she said "Watch *this*."
She got up, went out to the kitchen where her mom was working on dinner, and in the sweetest, most innocent sweet girl voice I have EVER heard out of another human being, she said, "Mommy?
Thankyou for the story hahaha thats a good one !
@@mezzokitty247 I mean, they're in the US. So, as I learned from the internet, sex ed is not a given 🤷♀️
@@unbekannternutzer25 Yeah, I guess that’s true.
Apparently the mom doesn't have a brain to think about that
She (the kid) might've been a little embarrassed, but honestly she probably thought it was funny. The mom is being ridiculous for complaining
I feel so sorry for the 14yr old, especially since there's a good chance that she might see the video and the comments, let's all be nice. I'm sure most of us experienced "What the hell is up with you, mom/dad? Was that really necessary? IN PUBLIC?!" moments when we were that age, no matter how perfect or imperfect our parents usually were 😁
Exactly
i think its good that comments stated that her mom's behaviour was wrong but yeah she probably knows anyway
It's not realistic to complain, but nothing is stopping her from steering her daughter away from seeing it.
why yes, we must get angry when a 14-year-old (a very innocent being) sees monitor breeding 😂
"innocent"
You got to hope someone is teaching that teenager sex ed, as her mother certainly isn't >.>

@@Kingdomall yes although sadly theyre not practical for everyone
@@iimuffinsaur when it's not practical for someone they probably shouldn't own reptiles to begin with.
All these surprises feel like compensation for the bad couple years they've had with clutches
Lol
I would tell the mom don't take your daughter a local farm, I mean, have you seen livestock breeding? 😅 She should be happy it just tiny monitors!
I can't be the only one who feels very bad for a 14 y/o whose parents thinks they are too young to know about animal breeding. Like they should have had the talk a long time before that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those parents who believes they don't need the talk until 18 or they get married.
And than are surprised If the Teen child comes home pregnant
I won’t be surprised if the 14 year old gets pregnant later on and it immediately disowned by her family. Sad scenario but this happens more than you think.
No need to worry, nearly every comment is about that.
You’re telling me that lady doesn’t think her 14 year old daughter knows what sex is? 😭
Yeah, I learned it in fifth grade.

Ah...actually she may know, but only the unhealthy aspects.
The critters are clearly happy with the new digs!!
*Clutches pearls* How dare you not be able to control natural animal behaviours! 😂
I’m so excited to see all the new babies ❤️
gotta love a mum getting annoyed about nature happening in front of a whole damn teenager. like, maybe I'd understand up to like 11 years old but by her age she's probably catching onto how that works, I know I was.
Right I found it dumb and overprotective of the mom, she probably knows more than the mom thinks at her age.
Funny thing is that young kids won't even understand what the monitors are doing until the adults start acting weirdly. It could honestly have been an educational moment than an awkward one.
I remember being taught about animal reproduction in second grade. We watched a video about dolphins. It's just nature, nothing to get upset about.
I know. This is just a natural thing that can happen at any zoo really. It's kind of like " What do you expect? Just have them sitting and playing cards?". Besides, she's around that age where she probably knows that stuff, at least here in the States.
i learned at 4 after seeing the stray cats doing that and asked what were they doing
It really is a testament to the naturalness of the enclosures that the animals are breeding. I'd like to say I was surprised about the mom but as Forrest Gump would say, "Stupid is as stupid does". I do feel sorry for the child.
Lol, what did the Karen expect you to do? Give the lizards a stern talking to about propriety?
Hi guys, I love your channel and have become obsessed with anything reptile (mostly snakes) over the holidays because of this channel. I think it would be really cool if you guys did a “day in the life” video to see what your busy busy days look like. From feeding animals to talking to customers, I think we would all enjoy it 😊 ❤️ love you guys
I was there that day! One of your employees told me that she was laying them though I didn't see any of the eggs, just the mama. :)
Reality: sand covered eggs
My brain: tiny potatoes
The mom who had complained obviously doesn’t know that most teens, including 14 year olds, 100% know what sex is and knows how it works lol
i wonder if the sticky eggs getting covered in substrate is something that evolved to help hide the eggs?
Yeah maybe!
The lady that complaint about the monitors doing their thing was definitely a Karen 😂😂
She shouldn’t have went to a zoo if she didnt want to see what happens in the wild lol
@@jessig8854 exactly like hello what did you expect Karen
Clearly everyone's really liking the new zoo! I'm so happy and excited for the two of you
I'm sure that baby ackies will be incredibly adorable!

School only closes for extreme temperatures at I think -45°C in my area
Did the eggs end up hatching. My ackie laid eggs beginning of March so I'm hoping end of June or beginning of July I will have baby ackies.
