- I'm perhaps not the best at review videos but here are my thoughts on the Big Agnes Copper Spur, a one person tent that I spent the last three weeks or so of my summer tour camping in.
I got the bikepacking version of this tent and (spoiler alert) it is fantastic. I'm really pleased with it.

Thank you. Glad you found it useful. I used the tent again a couple of weeks ago. Worst conditions I have ever camped in probably - wind, rain, cold - and it stood up to it all. Great piece of kit.

Thanks for the great video, Jethro. I bought this tent based mostly on your review and have no regrets. It’s a great design and I love the thoughtful features like the loft and colour coded assembly. The fast fly option has been useful for avoiding both the midgies and the rain in Scotland!

Good and complete review. Love the pockets, space and anti-werewolf feature especially. That's so appealing that it makes you want one, even when not in need.

Great review, have to agree that its a cracking tent. Have just got one myself but not used it in anger yet. Quality seems really good, the pack size makes it for me being able to stash the poles between the bars on the adventure bike.
You won't regret it. This is a real cut above other tents I've owned in the past. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Really glad it was useful. If you are thinking of getting this tent I can add that I've still got it and have used it pretty heavily and it is still going strong.
It needs rewaterproofing but otherwise is still in tip top condition. I love it 🏕️

This is by far the best and up-to-date (new pole length) review of the Copper Spur HV UL1 on UA-cam - it should be on top of the search results for this tent.
It now is in my top 2 tent list for future bikepacking. The MSR Carbon Reflex 1 and this one are interesting especially because of the pack size.
It would be interesting to see your complete sleep setup and how you store it on your bike!

I recently had a massive kit update. Built a new bike and moved over to bikepacking type bags. I had intended to do a couple of rides and then do a few videos on it all but the whole virus situation popped up and it hasn't happened. It will though, so subscribe and keep your eyes peeled

Thermarest pillow stuff sack. It takes up no room and I find it really comfy.
It's just a stuff sack but the inside is felted. Turn it inside out and stuff a hoodie in there and you're sorted!

This summer I finally had time to try mine out (bought it last fall, for "cheap"). Not that many nights in it so far, only 4, but I am very happy with mine. It packs down compact, is easy to set up (but do come with the caveat all tents that needs to attach the inner tent before the outer comes with regarding setting up in rain and wind).
But I like mine, and I like it a lot.
Just make sure that if you buy it, listen to the advice given in the video and shell out for the footprint at once.
Regarding the footprint, it easily stuffs down into the tent bag. Besides, packing the tent is extremely easy. Do not fold it! Just stuff the inner tent into the bag, then the outer tent, and last the footprint. You will find you get some space left over once done. Easy peasy.
What you need to add to the package are a few extra tent pegs, and a piece of 2 mm kevlar or nylon rope. 2 meters should be enough. This to actually be able to use all the attachment points for the tent, as well as to be able to make some of the tent lines longer should you not camp on forgiving ground but need to make do with rocks or tying the lines to trees or shrubbery when pitching.
There are a few things that could have been done better, but overall it is a very attractive package. After using it, I am not looking to get another tent for a long time. This was exactly what I was looking for.

When I first got this one the Hubba was my other option. I went for the BA in the end purely because the other was out of stock and I have never regretted it. Its a fantastic tent and the new edition has the awning style door which looks like a great addition!

@@JethroJessop True, there are so many choices, but the shorter tent poles and handlebar bag were the clinchers! With my UGQ Bandit quilt, Nemo Tensor, insulated pad and the tent & footprint, I'm right at 5 pounds, 7 ounces!
@@CorkReHarvest A nice set up indeed. I'm intrigued by the quilt. I've always used sleeping bags but I don't do much camping in th colder months so actually they are usually too hot and restrictive. I imagine a quilt is way more comfy than a bag?
@@JethroJessop I've no direct experience with using a quilt. I purchased one based upon all the written and video reviews I've researched. At 6' and 94 kg, I don't do well in sleeping bags so I thought the quilt would be my best option. I'll let you know my thoughts once I've given it a go, later this month. Fall temps in Oregon are between 4-6 degrees and the quilt I bought is rated down to -1

Superb little tent and very like the MSR Hubba NX range of which I have a 2 person version. Like the Hubbas, you BA looks so simple to pitch after a hard day in wind and rain, waterproof, roomy, good headroom - home from home 🏡 👍🏻
When I was shopping for this it was tied with the Hubba and the deciding factor really was only that I found a BA that was available in Sweden (where I was at the time).
I love this tent though. So many good experiences with it.

Have the two person version and I love it. Like you said condensation isn't amazing but I will say it's better when u ventilate it properly I usually always forget to pop the vent open.. best freestanding tent out there.

@@craiglycke6170 Ah nice. I've just perving over maps of both of them. The C&O looks great! I hear it mentioned a lot but never actually checked any details. It a bit far out of my neck of the woods but I do like to look over these parts of the world where other people are adventuring.

I haven't ever reviewed a saddle as I don't really feel like I know enough or have tried enough to give a decent argument either way.
I also suffered in the past and I currently use a Selle SMP Gel which I really like and would buy again.
My advice would be to measure your arse :) I did the trick where you sit on tin-foil to see how far apart your sit bones are and it turns out mine are pretty wide. I got a saddle closer to what is recommended for my measurements and it made a lot of difference.
Also, take the time to tinker with the position and angle as small changes there make big differences.
“...tics, werewolves or whatever” 🤣🤣🤣. Great review with an enjoyable tinge of well placed sarcasm. Thx for the honest take on the helmet strap and fly daisy chain. My impression of usefulness or lack thereof was similar. The best feature of all BA Bikepacking tents is the short poles. I have better tents but the poles or so long they are a gangly disaster to pack for cycling. So well done BA!
Glad you enjoyed the vid. Despite its gimmicky features I love this tent. I've not owned many others in the past so my experience isn't super broad but this is my favourite of the ones I have tried.
I can only pray that 2021 throws up more opportunities to use it than 2020 has.

@@stevenbissett ah yeah, I can imagine. What about MSR? I think the Hubba is comparable to the CS. It was my other choice when I was shopping and the CS only won out because I could get it fastest.

Got this a couple of months back. Not had a chance to use it, only put it up twice. But it feels very nice, and roomy for sure. My gut feeling is it will be a fine tent for both bike packing as well as when going kayaking. Small pack size and short poles really helps out in both cases.
I am also thinking 'bout ditching the pack, and just put it in my rear panniers.
Footprint is worth it, IMHO.
I'm really pleased with it. I reckon you won't regret it - roomy, cosy, great storage, versatile.
I recommend these tenst as for Bike Touring; 1) MSR tents 2) Big Agnes Tents 3) Some Nemo's 4) Some Sierra Design tents...there are others that are ultralightweight but these brands are the most reasonable (yet still expensive) to get and also being lightweight as the whole concept behind Bike Touring is this; Compact and lightweight. Someone told me that if your entire Cargo on your bike to do your traveling is under 55lbs, you are doing good. There are all sorts of other comfort camping gadgets; Marchway (to others) foldable/collapsible sleep cot (keep you off the cold grounds...better sleep :). I had purchased a kitchen utensil kit with it 's own carrying tote..eating GOOD foods; critical in sustaining your energy muscle strength, and health. There are a ton of BENEFITS that one can learn from FULL SELF SUPPORT BIKE TOURING.
I was looking at MSR as well but in the end I went for BA purely because it was the one that i could find in stock at the time. I love it though, a cracking tent.
I actually don't have a clue how much my load weighs. I try to keep it lean where I can but at the end of day I'm carrying things because I need them so knowing the weight doesn't make a difference.
I also appreciate good food during a ride so my cooking kit and supplies is a big portion of my weight.
Nice review. I recently purchased the regular version but, unfortunately, got in a hurry to beat a rainstorm and managed to snap the ridgeline on the inner tent, tearing a 3 inch gash in the mesh. So, it serves as a reminder that UL tents are not as rugged as heavier backpacking tents, like the Kelty Grand Mesa. But, overall, it is a very nice tent.
Ouch! I imagine some creative swearing was triggered by that one.
It is definitely not the most robust tent in the world and I do worry about snagging it when setting up near bushes and undergrowth. It's the price you pay for a few less grams of weight I suppose.
@@JethroJessop I wasn't real happy when I realized what I had done. But I have a temporary fix in place with some patch screen. It should be pretty easy to sew the ridgeline back together when I have time.

Its pretty good as long as you secure everything well. Otherwise the wind catches it and you get a bike falling on your tent ;)

@@kevindean9613 Don't really have specifics. I've woken up with the fly crusted with frost and had whole nights where the rain was running off it in torrents.
It's weakest point is probably when it gets broadsided by strong wind. End on it is fine but I have had it distort when the wind comes in from the side. Possibly my guy line technique is partly to blame there ;)

It isn't cheap I agree but it is also really good quality, really light and really packable. I don't have many vices in life so I feel OK spending money on something that I'm confident will keep me warm and dry for many years. It all depends how you are going to use a tent I suppose.

The werewolves were top of my list of requirements when buying this tent. And it really works. I've not seen a single werewolf on any of my trips!
You under sell yourself. Good review. Although I love my MSR Hubba NX this tent seems an improvement on it. Only downside I can see is that it doesn't have a green fly sheet making wild camping more stealth. This is the only thing. 12 inch poles are good.
I'd agree about the fly. It does stand out a bit and I'd have chosen green if they had it but I try to pick my camp spots well out of sight anyway - can't sleep if I'm worrying about bloodthirsty locals.
The Hubba was level my other choice when I was shopping around - it was close but I'm super happy with the BA

Just a quick search on UltralightOutdoorGear shows BA now do them in green, and you can get a non bike packer version which doesn't presumably have the helmet strap and the roof thing to dry wet damp clothing which is a tiny bit cheaper ............. tempting, but as you say will this summer be a write off for leisure travelling or holidays, so wouldn't even get to use it this year? Thanks again.

I assume that the non-bikepacking version also has the longer poles though I could be wrong?
@@JethroJessop That's a point, it may well do. Hadn't thought of that. Also the extra sewn on straps you highlighted in your review for helmet and drying stuff on top of the tent seem like extra possibilities for the tent to leak. As you say perhaps things just so they could say it was a bike packing specific tent although the 12" poles might be desirable if carrying the tent on the handle bars. See you are very knowledgeable. I hadn't thought of this. Many thanks.
Very likely to be a decent tent for the majority of bike touring. I chose a Hilleberg Soulo however and I am super happy with it. But then , I do my camping in Iceland so I need to sacrifice light weight for sturdiness and prefer a tent that is close to bombproof. Do you have any info on how much wind and rain the Copper Spur can handle?
The fly is rated 1200mm. Not sure about wind but it stood up well in everything I encountered this summer.
There are so many good tents out there these days that the differences are often pretty minimal.

Definitely this one. It is free standing, it has more headroom inside, better storage, stands up to heavy rain and wind better and being able to pitch just the flysheet is nice as well.
I would have preferred a more stealth-camping-friendly colour but that isn't a big problem.
I never managed to pitch the powerlizard without it flapping in the wind and often found that the fly would touch the inner and wick damp through. It may have been a little smaller and lighter than the BA (??) But I wouldn't swap back.

Hi Jethro, I see that all your tent fixing points are connected to yellow or orange guy lines? (As mine is) I’ve been looking at changing them out with ‘Dutchgear’ Ti clips ( Fleaz and Flyz and Wasps)etc. With some dyneena style lines. It is only bling, and not at all essential, but I know you love your tent as I do and I suspect you to be the ‘gearhound’ that I am. This is a good vid from you. I’ve watched it more than once. @@JethroJessop indeed. Thank you for asking. I plan on doing the Colorado Trail beginning of September. I am an endurance athlete and COVID-19 has caused havoc the last year and already in 2021. ALL of my MTN bike and Ironman races have cancelled. The Colorado Trail is the only thing that I can guarantee will happen !!! Need the mental victory !! worst-case scenario I have to drive there from Texas but fingers crossed I’ll do the Leadville 100 MTB first in August, then hit the Colorado Trail in September. Have a great 2021 and I hope it gets better for everyone. E

Hi there. I have one more question. From your expert opinion do you think the shorter shortstik poles an essential addition??? Im looking at a big agnes copper spur in the olive green colour but its not a bikepacking version. The poles are about 4" longer when folded. I only want the olive green version for its stealth colour
I think it depends on your personal preference and how you like to pack. I went for years without short poles and it was fine but now I have them I really like them.
I guess you have to look at your bags and whether you want to pack the tent as a single bundle or break it apart, will it be in a pannier, a bar roll, strapped to a rack or a cage.
If the longer poles will fit with your particular rig then go for it. I agree that a more stealthy colour would be nice - you can spot mine from a mile away :)

Its just like yours except for the clothes drying attachment straps and the helmet strap... just the poles are about 16" long.

Sounds daft maybe, but if you are on the fence about the length of the poles then cut a load of bamboo canes to that size and do a few test packs to see if it all fits the way you want it to.

I do still really like the tent and have no complaints about it. The fabric is light but not overly so. I've pitched in forest and around bushes and brambles as well as onto sand and stones. I'm not super precious about my kit but it is still intact with no holes or damage. It also dries pretty quick because it is so thin.
I'm not saying it's the best tent on the market because I haven't tried many others but it is a really good one that I look forward to using for a good many years to come.

Can I get a freestanding tent with compact poles like theses my tent poles are way to long
The short poles were what really should me on this one and they are very handy.
Freestanding is also useful though in my experience rarely vital. I definitely recommend this tent though.

Can I ask how to get rid of an old tent responsibly? There seems to be loads on gumtree etc and charities don't seem to be interested. Cheers. Great vid.
That is a very good question and one that I don't have a good answer for.
One thing you could try is going on Reddit and posting on the r/myog sub.
This is all people who make and customise their own gear and there may be someone near you who can reuse the fabric/poles/fasteners etc.
I did this with my old tent and got a fair bit of interest but it was all from overseas and the postage meant that in the end it went to the tip.
At the end of the day, if this doesn't work then all you can do is use the tent for as long as possible then recycle any bits that can be recycled.

How does it perform in the wind?
It hasn't failed me so far.
If it gets broadsided by really strong gusts it can flex a fair bit but if you pitch at the right angle it stands up to it really well
When using a sleeping bag with this tent, will I get a -left zip- bag? Because of the door
I suppose the door is on your left as you lie in it but I wouldn't ever consider this a factor when choosing a bag. I can't see that it would make a lot of difference, especially if you use a bag liner which is probably zippless

Great review. One thing that bothers me, which no one seems to address, is bike security while you are in your tent. What is there to stop some one pinching your bike, or rummaging through your gear. You mentioned keeping valuables in the inner pockets, however to me everything I own is valuable, especially my bike.
I put a lock through the bike and lie it next to the tent with a guy line through the frame. If someone moves the bike then I'll hear and they would have to carry it away which isn't easy.
All my gear lives in the tent which is as secure as I can make it.
At the end of the day you just have to admit that there is nothing else you can do and trust in the general goodness of your fellow man. Otherwise you will just never go anywhere for fear of getting robbed.
I've never had any trouble and I've only met one person on the road who had anything stolen.
@@JethroJessop Thanks. I'm toying with a dog anchor with a cycle lock, an ultra light weight, dark flysheet, and attack alarm tethered between the bike and me. I trust no one, I'm from Merseyside it comes natural.
@@Chris66able I actually met a chap recently who had a little blutooth alarm on his bike with a motion sensor. He said it was great, really loud, really sensitive, pretty small as well.
I think as long as you do enough to discourage passing chavs that is enough. If a dedicated thief really has their eye on your bike then they will get it no matter what locks and precautions you take.

@@JethroJessop I know, all the hours of skiving in work, to buy a nice bike, then some little Chav trying to pinch it, then getting a bad back from digging his grave. Still its one of the handy parts of knowing the local woods.

I have had my favourites but with increasing age, one has to change. Like one is no longer as agile as before and therefore space and headroom become more important.
My historic favourite was my Lichfield Scorpion 2 which was a classic of a low-profile budget tent (I got it new for 1/2 price). It came with me bikepacking Lindisfarne to Lichfield et al. I like Lichfield Tents (when Hawleys made them) and had some great times car-camping with a Cherokee 3 which I've given to Son No 1. I motor-bike camped with an Apache 3 which was cheap and perfect.
I've now gone totally crackers and bought a sad-looking Cubmaster 2 Ridge Tent (ebay - £15!) to take me back 60yrs to my misspent youth. It turned out to belie the photographs on ebay. With 4ft 2ins headroom at its summit, it surprised me positively. It needs VERY little TLC to get it back to perfect nick and I'm working on a 4ft cooking extension it make it more user-friendly for an old codger -( 5ft headroom and all that) Alloy poles from a redundant Lichfield Strola (sadly my bro badly packed it before returning it and the groundsheet and inner rotted) will provide the support for the light Strola canvas (adapted) to make the extension.
If you don't fall in love with your canvas, (as opposed to being seduced by spurious and exaggerated claims) best leave it be.
Sister Agnes seems to have some really decent and very 'loveable' features from bag to pitch. STAY IN LOVE!

I do indeed love my tent. I can't see myself changing until it falls apart or Big Agnes decide to sponsor my channel - hint hint incase they watching ;)
The only thing that does keep my eye wandering is that the new model has the awning style door flap that would really make those wet camp days a lot better. It is a cool feature but not enough to make me upgrade.
