I originally had the copper spur platinum 2, the extra lightweight pre 2020 version. It had a slightly longer footprint than the 2020+ model and came in under 1kg (excluding pegs and bags…….). Within 12 months of solid use it suffered from small tears along the seams of the fly - I contacted the same company you bought it through, they contacted Big Agnes who suggested the Platinum version was not up for UK winds and comped me the same version you’ve scored. I was in love with the doors and tweaks to the design, then realised they’d shaved 5cm off the length which made it just a tiny bit too small for my 6’4 compared to the platinum. The platinum is huge inside, but too fragile. You’re right that the copper spur can’t take more than a stiff breeze from the side without collapsing a bit (or a lot), but I’ve had it out in named storms copping a battering and it always bounces back (with a little bit of help/with you praying and holding it up from inside). Be careful to keep the head end with the roof vent away from the wind, otherwise it become a literal shower head when it rains and can not be sufficiently closed. I’ve had to get out of the tent and stuff a microfibre towel under the vent to stop the constant spray. Oh and the pre 2020 footprint uses different clips than the current version which makes it even worse as now I’ve had to buy two separate footprints. Point is that after all that it’s still my fav tent in fair weather.

I have the one person version, mainly due to keeping costs and weight down. Although it’s only has the one vestibule, it’s still feels roomy and not like a coffin. Used for the South Downs Way and the first half (Lake District) of the Coast to Coast and a few one nighter wild camps without any issues. Love the tent. Going back to finish the C2C end of May. I agree with your views on the ground sheets, if you need one then it should be included.

Spot on with the footprint! Claim your tent weighs Blah, but to make it useful you need a footprint, so what they are saying is we haven’t put enough thought into the tent!! I’m still looking for the perfect tent! But finding it is fun!!

looking well hazey mate. yeah im with you on the foot print matter the company should supply the foot print especially at that price mate.. non the less the tent is outstanding... it looks really well designed it looks clean smart.. loving the pockets inside.. you can basically put all your clothes into that big pocket which will allow you to have so much room on the ground where you go to sleep.. loving how they have done the vestibule where you can prop it up with your trekking poles its cool a good purchase for you mate. cool luxurious tent.

I'm with you mate if I buy a tent I don't want to then have to pay for in app purchases haha. Good vid mate I'm off to the lakes myself tomorrow in my Vango hydra 200. Bit heavy but bomb proof 🏕️

And the Vango mirage which replaced it,is also bombproof,at 3kg it’s manageable and you know you are safe in the wind.

For 20 years I had a TNF Condor. It was bomb proof, and all that was missing was the ability to use the outer doors with a walking pole.
I lost it along with everything else I owned in a fire last year and a mate recommended this (just gone through Storm Beryl in Scotland and lived 😀)
Thanks for a great review - looks like my new tent!

Hi Hazy. I've got the bikepacking version of that tent. The poles fold down into a shorter package for strapping onto a bike. I bought the footprint as well as some of the places I camp in Queensland Australia are a bit rough. But, if I am camping on sand or grass I leave the footprint at home.
In strong winds, I use the guy lines at each corner with some extra pegs out at 45° and that really helps. Cheers and thanks for the videos.

Totally agree with you on having to purchase or "make your own" footprint. Vango and Wild Country being the main culprits for me. The only tent that has come with a footprint has been the Cloud Peak 2. Totally different price points to what you usually use but the same principals apply. Robbin' sods. ;)

I’ve got one of these - the bike packing version with the shorter pole set which is a tiny bit heavier. I don’t think I’d trust it in really high winds but that aside it’s by far the best tent I’ve ever owned, so spacious and well designed.

A brand to check out in your tent search is Helsport. It’s a Norwegian brand similar to The Swedish Hilleberg. In they’re super light line up there are some quite nice tents. Also they’re expedition line up is quite nice but at a higher cost and weight.

I’ve recently purchased the Big Agnes Blacktail 2 and it is fantastic! Took me ages to find a tent that will accommodate my 6’6” fat arse but it was definitely worth the wait. Having to get the footprint is annoying but it is kinda helpful to be able to use it as a shelter for my son and dog when it’s sunny

  • @ТУРИСТ-АВАНТЮРИСТ
    @ТУРИСТ-АВАНТЮРИСТ 2 роки тому +1

I have given up the tent for eight years now, I constantly use the awning as a shelter over my head. But in Belarus, forests predominate rather than mountainous areas, so there are no such strong winds. And of course you need a tent with your weather. There are many videos on my channel where I use an awning as a shelter over my head.

It’s great you’ve mentioned this about the footprint. I think it’s insane. I have the Copper Spur UL1 Bikepacker and I had to pay £70 for the footprint. This footprint insanity and the weight without pegs and bags does my head in. Perfect tent? Maybe the Tiger Wall for 3 seasons and I’ll stick to my Soulo in winter (mental money but I bought it when they were half the price of now).

The add ons are where they get you. I agree they should provide the foot print, but then it would cost more.
Also with the side winds, maybe you should open both doors and let Aeolus blow on through. Thanks for sharing

I can’t agree with you more strongly about the footprint issue with tent manufacturers!! It makes no sense to sell a tent that can’t withstand the elements from beneath or not include a footprint which is necessary for the use of the tent. So bizarre!

    Great review, lovely looking tent.
On the ground sheet issue, with my experience in product design/development, the ground sheets would be a bit too expensive to just give away (these companies have to make a profit to pay staff well and fund development of new designs/materials etc.)…but i do think they should be included with every tent. So that would mean a higher upfront price, but likely lower than having to buy them both separately. I imagine keeping that upfront cost lower is a big reason behind selling them separately…also keeps their official packed weight figures down. Plus maybe they have a lot of sales data that shows many don't want a ground sheet for whatever reason?

  • @boxcartwilly

The other advantage of the footprint is you can leave the inner tent at home for 'posh" tarp camping. Never done it myself as I'd prefer to be bug free but some want the option.

Been using both the 1 and 2 person HV UL's for over 8 years, updating as new versions appeared. Didn't see you Place the top pole ends into their pockets on the inside of the Flysheet. Otherwise the pole will puncture the flysheet!!...Also velcro tabs that wrap around the poles to keep flysheet In place. Sold mine eventually as got fed up using in windy conditions. The Copper Spurs need Apex tie outs/guy lines like on the MSR Hubbas.
Beautiful, liveable tents with fantastic features and storage space but not for bad weather lol.

Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 2P 1.5kg no footprint at AUD 800. Nice review of a great UL tent. A niche product. The usual UL levy applies: pay double, save 1kg, a flimsy tent, pay extra for the footprint. I’m ok with a 2.5kg load, Marmot Catalyst 2P & footprint AUD 300.

  • @HuskyMike
    @HuskyMike 2 роки тому +1

Great choice. We have 3 BA tents including, my first tent, a classic Copper Spur UL2. Another Pro could be Big Agnes's customer support. I've had to contact them twice. I broke a pole while out camping (you'll be glad they include the repair sleeve if that ever happens) and our dogs chewed up the netting one time. Both times, customer service was very responsive and the repair on the tent was a reasonable cost.

You can use a trick with a piece of cord for pitching outer first.
Ive seen using a piece of window insulation plastic plus duck tape for a lightweight cheap alternative to the footprint. and since I've seen it mentioned on the web. Recently Ive seen Paul Messner demo'ing that with the cord on the MSR 1 man tent. Just set the tent as normal, then run a cord around the perimeter creating loops (e.g. figure of 8 knot) at the corners to attach to the poles and maintaining each section taut'ish (doesn't have to be perfect).
It'll allow pitching these type tents outer-first and even just using it as a tarp/shelter only.

Don’t want to suck up too much, but always enjoy your reviews. I’ve got the Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL 2 and the UL 3. Probably should have bought the Copper Spur instead of the Fly Creek UL3, however love both tents. Easy to put up, Fly Creek even lighter and it is possible to do outer first with the footprint, but fiddly. Really well thought out, but as with everything, they do seem to be getting quite a bit more expensive. Agree on footprint - think it allows manufacturers to advertise lower weights. Still, my UL 2 only weighs 1.2kg with footprint, bag, pegs etc. Can’t beat it.

Been endlessly considering a tent as i have not owned one for years and i relate to trying to find the perfect one as nothing i have seen really grabbed me and i am ocd about Everything i buy , great review and all fair comments you made .
I think charging for an addition decent groundsheet could be a business move of sorts but maybe its so people have a light option or a heavier option of them seperate but personally i just want a tent that does the job and with the footprint as part of the tent .
This tents however ticked every box for me and I love the way the sides open up for some star gazing and social camping and festival siesta's .
My only concerns the cornish winds as i am planning on taking it to the coastal path at Zennor and moors around there and that place is like a wind tunnel on a fair day sometimes.
Thanks for your videos , heart warming and entertaining and always informative , keep on and in the heart x

Nice review. Agree a feeling of space and comfort is important (to me)..."feels nice to be in it"... especially when weather is bad. The main thing putting me off is the mesh inner roof, would prefer a solid patch of material to prevent condensation drips. Inner first pitching is over criticised imo.

I've used this same tent for the last two years. It's a great tent. However, the only thing I don't like is the floor size. It tapers which makes it impossible for two 25 inch wide pads to fit unless overlapping. That is the only negative feedback I have. Advise on the trekking poles for the awning feature, point the poles down so the point is in the dirt. It holds steady and you are less likely to snag your clothing or gear on the tips. Thanks and good luck from Utah ✌🏻

    • @miconn69

Yeah, that floor space is kind of crazy. It looks like the diagram shows two mummy pads usable in this, which kind of socks because I was really looking at using something like double sleeping bag/quilt in this. I am seeing that BA has a Rapide pad that tapers to fit the floor, so I guess there's that option as well. ($$)

Very similar to my Hubba Hubba but with a porch. Had exactly the same issue with MSR about having to buy a ground sheet. I did but the Hubba Hubba ground sheet doesn't come with grommets and found if you had an Elixir ground sheet, which was my previous tent, you could set up the outer first on the Hubba Hubba. They only changed it because I hassled them so much. Love the tent but no love lost for MSR.

Great videos mate, very refreshing after watching too many Appalachian UA-cam gear videos!
I’ve spent hours poring over tent reviews the last few days, I’m in the same boat as you, looking for a non-coffin one man, light weight, decent quality tent that doesn’t break the bank. £400 is a pile to spend on something you can try on in the changing rooms.
Big agnes is on the list, also the terra nova laser compact (even dearer!). Also still pondering over the lanshans. Plan is to do a year or two in the uk to get back in shape and then do a big trail hike.
Anyway, keep up the good work lad!

Amazing looking tent. Not bad on price compared to terranova stuff too. I think the reason they don’t include the bath tub is there is such a focus on weight so want it to show as really light. Then everyone adds the footprint as well. Still a great light tent that looks bigger than most, light (including footprint) and the porch is great.

Well I have to say HOutdoors like the look but much prefer the Helm2 for ease function and ease. Like the dual entrance and canopy. As long as I can stay dry and kip easily with easy pitch with reasonable weight I really don't care what tent I use

Great review, and looks like a great tent I totally agree with you too about the footprint not being included, I recently bought a tarptent scarp 1, paid extra for the crossing poles fair enough i accept that, BUT 35$ Seam sealing WTF why isn't it water tight anyway, next tyvek footprint didn't realise till it arrived can't even be pegged down waste of money had to buy a vango gp505 footprint fits great , next guylines for the sides not even included another extra and guess what you will need extra pegs too anyway rant over great video look forward to your next one

Are there anymore tents with that awning feature? Its something I have been looking for forever or at least a tent with a sort of rainbow door where you could put 2 really low chairs (like a helinox ground chair) inside and use it like a tarp in the evening before bed

ecluding pegs because people prefer certain types i guess....when i am on kinder or Bleaklow i use snow and sand pegs .Hilleberg pegs are shite on softer ground. This BA looks awesome for its weight. I will give you a footprint for nowt if you get me thinking about another tent i dont need young Hazey

Great review, small features make the difference, alot of the decathlon tents have great features on inside but they are more car camping tents not to walk up in the mountains.

I agree the foot print should come included. or they should make it so you dont need it. Just makes no sense.

I've had their Fly Creek UL2 for a while and got gyped into getting the footprint and THEN discovered that from a waterproof point of view, it doesn't need it! "To prolong the life of the tent" is their claim, or it was - I think it's more popular in the States too were dry but rough ground (like desert) is more common...good kit though

I agree for typical UK conditions. I bought a ground sheet with my Copper Spur and have never used it and I’ve never had a problem even in very wet weather. TBH I think it’s only worthwhile if you want to use it without the inner to save weight but the midges make that pretty unattractive in Blighty! I did try it in the garden to see how easy it was to pitch outer first but decided that the faff wasn’t worth it as it’s such an easy tent to pitch I’ve always managed to keep in the inner dry even in light rain.

@@mikelambrou4462 That's true - the fast fly configuration is a decent aspect of the Fly Creek. If you've got the time and want the benefit (so warm weather/sunny shelter) then the footprint is a big plus. If you do need to go 'fast' because of the rain then not so much. I don't regret getting it bit agree with Hazo - should be part and parcel for the cost....I also got sent the wrong one first off..

first time i've kinda coveted, apart from the wind handling its looks great, i have an old vango alpha300 dome style tent, i think its about 6kg, my gear weight is a bad joke, but i console myself with, nobody will ever steal my vango, and i have left it set up while i go exploring countless times. what i will say about the copper spur, the price and the features.... seem much more sensible than other tents. ps. have you ever considered designing your own tent? and making it????
