"Maguire's so quiet and so awkward it's kind of hard to imagine him running around in a costume like that."
THAT'S THE POINT. Peter Parker isn't supposed to be a guy you look at and go, "yeah, he could totally be a super hero." The reason why Parker is so endearing as a character is because he is quiet, nerdy and awkward.
Sir Topham Hatt And on the other hand, garfield tries to be like maguire but just can't, for example: At the begining of the movie we see him getting bullied...why? This guy is cool! The reason why tobey maguire's peter parker was bullied was because he was a nerd, and nerds are unfairly bashed, but garfield isn't a nerd. What? You're telling me that the simple fact that he wears glasses makes him a nerd? F*CK OFF! I hate this movie!
Dragon 54321
He finds the glasses, after getting bullied 😑
And in reality it's not just nerds that get bullied, it can happen to anyone
(I WOULD KNOW)
MoJo Claw That's not what i said, i said that nerd or not, he has nor reasons to get bullied, this guy is cool.
Sir Topham Hatt thank u
Amen
Ok to be fair Toby cried at appropriate times:
- Uncle ben dying
- Crying because your dead uncle could not see you graduate High school
- Crying when having an identity crisis about whether you want to have a normal life or be a superhero
- Crying when your girlfriend breaks up with you
- Crying when your childhood bestfriend dies
benny paige aside from the superhero part I’ve had all/ very similar thing happen and I’ve not cried about them once crying is an irrational way to handle something and just weird and cringy
@@TerribleTake Wow
@@TerribleTake Are you a robot?
Ryan's Channel Oh so Amazing Spider-Man had only one? They had JUST as much so him crying TOO much here is pure bullshit
Wrestling News Side He cried twice. Once for the death of Gwen Stacy and the other was uncle Ben. Both heart breaking loses. Andrew Garfield sucked me into the amazing Spider-Man and I loved Emma stone as Gwen Stacy. They’re chemistry was excellent. When Gwen father died all I wanted to do was hug her. Same for peter when Gwen dies. I’m like this dude needs a hug. Amazing Spider-Man had more emotions and the world felt real and the action was great. I loved electro, I can’t understand why people think that he attack s people out of nowhere. Did people forget that a sniper shot at him and that was after Spider-Man promised he wouldn’t hurt him. It’s then followed by the line. “YOU LIED TO ME!” It wasn’t peter fault the police wouldn’t stop shooting at electro but he then had to save people. So I honestly don’t see the problem with electro attacking people. He felt like his idol betrayed him. I liked the lizard even if he’s alittle forgettable. And the green goblin...... yeah..... even I can’t defend that. Though he’s still better then Defoe and I can’t believe I’m saying that because I love William Defoe. However I’m judging how he acted in that movie not his career in general. And in the rami movies. He’s really phoning it in. And just can’t take him seriously. And don’t give me your not supposed to take comics seriously. If people can get heart broken over their favorite character getting finger snapped by thanos then this has no excuse. Comics are serious however they balence it with comedy and that’s what makes marvel so great. Because they pull this off so well.
"When was the last time we heard Maguire complain about something"
Tobey Maguire:"You'll get your rent when you fix this damn door"! ! !
That was because the deadite symbiote was amplifying his anger
also smth NC forgets is that the weird times Tobey acted during SPiderman 3 was all because of the symbiote feeding upon those weaknesses of him by turning it into "egosticial strengths" basically, like this prideful very (supposed to be) cringy dance he did to show off his ego.

@@Retr0_846 How does having a real relationship behind the scenes make a movie bad?
Hey! Peter was much better with Gwen than he was Mary Jane. Like you can’t look at the original films and tell that Peter and Mary’s dialogue scenes were awkward.
@Wyatt Burchell Well I didn’t like Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship in the original trilogy and I disliked Mary Jane. I honestly can’t dislike Tobey Maguire, so that’s why I said I only dislike Mary Jane. Their relationship and chemistry isn’t better either. Dislike Peter and Gwen all you want, but at least their chemistry was believable. Peter and Mary Jane’s on the other hand is so cringe that I cannot believe that they’re in love. I mean seriously, the romantic dialogue is laughable.
Mary Jane: “You’re taller than you look.”
Peter: “I hunch.”
Mary Jane: “Don’t.”
Like wth? 😂 Did a middle schooler write that dialogue? It really shows David Koepp is not good with writing romantic dialogue. But then again, what do you expect from the screenwriter of The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1993), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Angels & Demons (2009) and director of Mortdecai (2015)?
I love how Tamara defends the rami movies while wearing a costume from the web movies 🤣
Tobey McGuire is a better Spider Man. Andrew Garfield looks like a hot Hollywood teen, while Tobey resembles a nerd more. That's what the movie is about, an unattractive nerdy kid who becomes a superhero.
Andrew Garfield is a better Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire is a better Peter Parker

Raimi is campy as hell but that's what makes his movies memorable. The new spiderman movies are good but forgetable.
who doesn't like dafoe lol
Of course he won. He chose a person that cant defend the old series. The new Spiderman series were too rushed. They didnt really build the relationship between Peter and Gwen. They just fell in love and that was it. The old ones they build a bond through hardship. The old one was a dork but he struggle and you cared about him. The new Spiderman is a jerk and you hate him or dislike him instead of cheering him. The old villains had more build up than the new ones.

Here's something you may not know: Garfield actually has more crying scenes than McGuire. No, really: count them.
That can't be true. Maguire cried like ten times in Spiderman 3 alone. I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe.
He cried twice in Spider-Man 3.
A Dark Shade of Green Hard to believe? yeah it can be, until you find it's actually true.
+TS Prism really? Cool. I think the critic likes the new better and that's all. I like both
Well at least andrew garfield doesn't have stupid faces every second
I always personally loved the original toby McGuire films, and I always think of him as the definitive Spider-Man. What makes his Spider-Man a classic is he plays spidey like an every-man: He's flawed, his life is messy and his powers and purpose as a whole makes it all the more complicated. Not every guy is a natural-born badass. Having a guy who's barely considered an adult in the real world trying to balance his life as peter parker and his duties as Spider-Man is played in an interestingly realistic way by Mr. McGuire. In the costume he is totally believable as the hero-but when he's just peter parker, you wouldn't think so. And that's the point, which is why it works so beautifully.
Either way I appreciate that there’s been a lot of great spider-man representations over the years. Maguire, Garfield, Holland, Into the Spiderverse, the Ps4 game, and spectacular spider-man. Each of them bring their own different takes on the character and his story in a positive way. Imo he’ll always be Marvel’s most important character
He is. I thought he was marvels mascot? I had a marvel poster when I was young and SpiderMan was front and center
@@MacenW Well he was an A list superhero even before the MCU.
J. J. Jameson is honestly a great example of why the characters in the first ones were the best. He is a comic book character brought to life and arguable the most well known version of JJ by a long shot.

Yeah, Simmons is never going to be equaled (except in voice acting I mean in Spectacular) but look at the love interest, or Spidey himself, he actually makes jokes, is comidic, and I feel he was a better Spider-Man overall, although as Peter Parker Maguire sold me better, but still

Trunks this is a really fucking stupid comment.
Now that No Way Home is out, the three actors whose performances are being praised the most are Willem Dafoe, Andrew Garfield, & Tom Holland. The rest of the cast is solid as well, but it goes to show that if Andrew had a better crew behind him, he would've been legendary.
True dat
For me, I praised ALL OF THEM. They were both my childhood (Sam Raimi's movies) and my early crushes ( Mar Webb ones). I was SO HAPPY that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were back.
WOW ok, immediately gonna call you on the action.
You just so happened to leave out the end fight of the first Raimi film where it straight up looks like Peter's going to be murdered by Norman. It's brutal and bloody and at times hard to watch. And then the way the backflip over the glider is edited, holy shit, it's just fantastic. And then YOU'RE GONNA SAY THE SWINGING IS BETTER IN THE TASM MOVIES?!?! ARE YOU MAD?!?! They created the fucking SPIDER-CAM for the Raimi movies, allowing it to dip and drop through the city while still swinging back up to follow Spidey effortlessly throughout. I'll probably continue to edit this as I watch the review.
Edit: Villains. Harry in TASM 2 is flat, boring, and stupidly over the top with his tantrum. Doc Ock in the second film is tragic and his sacrifice is heartbreaking.
Romance. Andrew and Gwen WOULD be adorable if they didn't hold on so many weird and awkward scenes with random head tilts, scoffing, chuckling, and dialogue. While MJ has issues, she's also her own person as well. We see how disfunctional her home life is and why she becomes attracted to Peter, because when she tells him about her dream that everyone else has seemingly laughed at, he tells her it's important and she should follow her dreams. And there's another issue I have with TASMs relationship but I'm gonna get into that in the next point.
Spider-Man. Andrew absolutely DOES NOT STICK TO ANYTHING CONSISTENTLY. He cannot leave Gwen the fuck alone and stalks her constantly, while also pushing her away over and over. Which I understand happens in the Raimi trilogy, but it happens over the course of 3 films, not over and over again in one. Of course it's harder to see Tobey's Peter as Spider-Man because that's the point. The TASM movies biggest flaw is that they make it Peter's destiny to be Spider-Man, completely shitting all over the character. The point was that it could've happened to anyone, and Peter had the misfortune of it happening to him. That's why Tobey is so compelling, because this kid who GROWS into a struggling, living paycheck to paycheck man decides to continue being Spider-Man. He doesn't quit because it's hard, he quits because he was having an identity crisis which made him lose his powers and even powerless, he rushes into a BURNING BUILDING TO SAVE A CHILD!! Tobey's Spider-Man was not only more accurate to the character, but was more compelling and interesting than Andrew's cocky, mean-spirited asshole.
I love you NC but I have a difficult time believing you saw the original Trilogy again before making this review as your points were generic and completely off base.

You entirely miss the point of action scenes. They mean absolutely nothing without actual plot and arc-driven conflict between the characters. The originals might have cheesier fighting, but you felt the importance of the actual conflict between the characters. The new movies’ characters are so bad and poorly developed that the fight scenes, while visually good, are just a bunch of weightless, empty nonsense.
Jojo The Panda THANK YOU!!
The Fast and Furious movies would beg to differ. I agree that being invested in the characters greatly elevates an action scene, however suggesting that not being invested renders every action scene as 'just a bunch of nonsense' no matter how well staged they are isn't just daft, but its kinda insulting to the tireless work that goes into properly staging them. You're basically saying to the stunt and VFX crew, "The characters are shit, so your work means nothing." Strong visuals can be just as compelling as good writing and since action scenes and characters are just forms of visuals and writing the same rule applies. In a good movie the two should complement each other, but even if they don't that doesn't cancel the other one out entirely.
@@SonicCrakpot I've never not slept through a fast and furious movie

I disagree strongly about Andrew being the best Spiderman. Who is the one I looked up to as Spiderman? It's not Andrew Garfield's, and I enjoyed his movies. It's Tobey Maguire's Spiderman that I looked up to more. His Spiderman was the one that acted more like a true hero.
Unlike Garfield's, Maguire's Spiderman truly felt like he knew the heavy responsibility he carried with his powers. At first, Peter used his powers for financial gain, participating in a wrestling tournament. He showed that he is strong, you know that he's capable of stopping anyone. But he decided not to stop the thief out of revenge. If he didn't think about himself and revenge, he could've prevented someone, like his uncle, from getting killed that night. Granted the same thing happened with Garfield's, but he never seemed guilt-ridden. The reason being is because he didn't test out his powers. He doesn't know that he could've probably taken that guy out. Peter wasn't put in a situation where he knew what he was capable of stopping the thief. After all, he was just denied milk rather than being denied $10,000 after beating a guy who was 3x bigger than he was.
And for the ending of the first movie, you may be frustrated that Tobey's Peter turned down MJ, but he did that because he realized that his loved ones will get hurt if his enemies found out who he was. He even had a taste of that with Aunt May and Mary Jane nearly getting killed by Green Goblin. And Tobey's Spiderman made that hard choice himself. Again, Gwen's dad had to make Andrew's Spiderman promise to stay away from Gwen. Which to his credit, he does... and immediately breaks it. Andrew's Spiderman is a bit too cocky for me, and a lot more selfish than what I'd expect from a hero.
And for giving up Spiderman. You can't be serious if you say Tobey's quit just because it was "hard". Tobey's Peter's life was crappy! Lost his job, lost the girl, aunt in financial trouble, losing his best friend, and failing classes and why? Because he's too busy being a superhero. The life of a superhero ain't easy, and it shows. But he continues because that's his curse, and his promise to Uncle Ben. He sacrificed a lot of things just to keep the city safer. But that came to a head when he was losing his powers. With his powers waning, Peter saw an out. He could keep his social life intact, keep his grades up, and have a slightly better life without the added stress of being a hero. And this was not an easy decision for him, as he breaks his promise to his uncle, mentally having the image of letting him down again.
As for Garfield's, goodness. He was willing to leave New York with Gwen for England. Giving up his hero career just to be with his girlfriend. Sweet and romantic, but heroic? That decision doesn't sound like anything that would benefit the city of New York at all. It will only benefit himself and Gwen, and possibly England. But what happens in England? They got James Bond for that stuff. And then after Gwen's death, he stops being Spiderman?! Sure, he couldn't save the love of his life, but that shouldn't stop him from doing what he does! I understand if he mourns for a day or a week, but not months! The only thing that made him come back was just hearing Gwen's grad speech that seemed aimed at heroes than graduating high school seniors. But that shouldn't be what makes him come back. Peter now has two people taken away from him, Uncle Ben and Gwen, due to him being selfish, and for not being careful about his relations. He could've used these experiences to become the real Spiderman; use his powers for the benefit of the city, and to absolutely keep is identity a secret from both foes and loved ones.
Tobey's Peter felt more like a hero because he made decisions for the benefit of the citizens of New York. He lives a crappy life, but deals with it because his responsibility of keeping New York safer is more important to him. Peter could still win wresting matches and make money, but knows that would be a misuse of his gift. Denies himself the happiness to be with MJ to keep her safe. Andrew's Peter makes his decisions out of pride and desires. Gets called out for only going after look alikes, decides to be a hero. Told to stay away from Gwen, still goes out with her. (I will mention that I left out that he dumped her in TAS2, but still stalks and goes out with Gwen again.) Quits being Spiderman because he couldn't save Gwen. And hell, forgot to mention he revealed that he was Spiderman to her. Andrew's Peter is more the guy people would like to be, but Tobey's Peter is more of the man people should be.

“Spiderman quit because it was too hard”.
Seriously Doug that was barely a surface level analysis. You went over Andrew Garfield with a fine tooth comb but ignored everything that was explicitly shown too you when it came to Tobey.
He quit because being Spiderman was ruining his life. His relationship with his friends were suffering, his grades were suffering, he lost one of his jobs, barely being able to pay for rent, and on top of all that he lost his powers! Being Spiderman at that point would be a suicide mission. AND DESPITE ALL THAT he still ran into a burning building risking his life to save a little girl.
Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman ignored the dying wishes of his girlfriends father which inevitably led to her death, and then quit because of it!
You want him to be the protector of your city rather than Tobey’s Spiderman? Come on man.
OK no. I draw the line at you saying Toby quit being spiderman cause it was 'hard'.
personally I find the both of them incomparable and I love them equally.
but the whole point of the second Toby movie was to break spiderman. it wasn't just hard, it was practically impossible. everything in his life was going against him. he was losing his job. not making enough money. aunt may was struggling financially as well. he was failing his university classes (which isn't a joke) because he was just so exhausted and quitting wasn't even a thought until his powers started shutting off.
you can't complain about the second movie being spiderman feels so lost when the whole point is in fact that that he WAS lost. that's like going into a star wars movie and being disappointed that they have jedis. what made the second movie so amazing was that it addressed how depressingly exhausting and unrewarding life as a superhero was and whether it was worth the effort. especially for someone like Peter who was definitely just a simple everyday guy going through the same issues and problems. not a billionaire with limitless resources. not a soldier out of time with government backing and support.
the third definitely messed that up and repeated way too many things. but it doesn't feel fair to undermine the progress made by the second because of it.
Atiqah Diyana I completely agree.
Nail hit squarely on the head. I found that much more relatable than the AS-M because while I can identify with the idea of stopping because of the loss of a loved one, that is what propels Peter Parker to become Spider-Man in the first place. And honestly, for all that they tried to be the more serious movies I found Gwen's death a bit goofy.
But with the original series, Peter giving in as Spider-Man because his life was rapidly becoming a train wreck and he needed the space to breathe is absolutely more identifiable. Nearly everyone goes through something similar at one point or another where the momentum just builds up and something has to give. For Peter, it was being Spider-Man.
Also, the originals have J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. That's an automatic win in my book.
Yes, I agree with you
Garfield only stops being Spiderman for like less than 10 minutes, so it's not a big plot they embarked on.
Atiqah Diyana that's something that nostalgia critic missed, Toby maguires was struggling with being both spiderman and Peter Parker, also it went on for 30 minutes in the film, how long did Andrew Garfield stop being spiderman? About 4 minutes.

That’s the whole point Tobey was detured by the stress of the Job but Andrew kept pushing through that until the person he loved most died. That shows that Garfield is always a stronger hero that would go through a whole lot more for the needs of the many

Yeah, the point of Peter losing his powers in the second film is that, because his life is such a mess at that point, he's lost the will to be Spider-man.

Andrews spiderman was not motivated by his moral responsibility to use his powers to protect the innocent, but by revenge and was a jackass that put civilian lives at risk so he could crack jokes and wear silly hats!
Not to mention that the old movies were more focused and tonally consistent. Yeah, they were campy, but they knew it and they ran with it.
BlitzBurn Spider-Man got everything that made him be a hero from his aunt and uncle his responsibility and his determination to do good he got that from his aunt and uncle!! I have no clue what may and Ben were teaching him in the Marc Webb films since Ben was so cruel to Peter
What did Ben teach Peter in the original? Oh that's right... "Fighting bullies is bad".
Jake Proven
Oh really? Because Ben told him it was wrong to fight a bully, Peter spends the rest of his life beating up bullies, the original trilogy had no idea what “With great power comes great responsibility” meant, they just butchered it for a catchy line
Neither were initially motivated by responsibility. That's all part of the lesson. Initially they become Spider-Man for selfish reasons (money for a car/revenge on Uncle's killer) and then later understand the importance of responsibility (after seeing the killer/after the lizard becomes a threat).
@@flarrowverse112 This guy gets it. Especially in Andrew's case which alot of people miss. It's a character progression which people just mistake that the movie crew forgot about the finding the killer subplot. Peter actually starts off as a revenge seeking bully only to find a father at risk of losing his child, mirroring Peter and his losses. It is infact here where Peter learns being Spider-Man is not about taking revenge, it's about ensuring no one ever goes through what he did. This being the reason why I thoroughly enjoy the first TASM film, the bridge scene in particular. It oozes with character.
I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the Best Spider-Man ruling, because there are definitely points on Maguire that Doug either simplified or didn't explain correctly. For one, he didn't quit being Spider-Man because it was just hard, he quit because his powers were literally failing him and he felt he was posing a greater danger to the public and himself by continuing to be a superhero. And on being shy and awkward, you could argue that that makes him less assuming. With Garfield, I could always sense he was hiding something, and let's face it, he's terrible at concealing his identity, whereas Maguire's personality added more mystery, because you wouldn't connect a sky, awkward teenager with a wisecracking, smart mouthed superhero.
We can all agree MCU spiderman reigns over all

+Rex67Diego9 fandub well maybe because maguire didn't have a good Peter Parker . He constantly cried and his relationship with MJ was bad. Garfield's Parker was kinda too cool . Tom Holland 's Spiderman was nerdy, geeky and lively . He might not be the perfect Spiderman but he is the best so far. Oh and I wouldn't really say maguire's spiderman was developed . His movies are just the same thing over and over again .
Maguire is too emotional? Andrew spent 80% of the movie with his emotional whispering and being a goddamn emo.

I peraonally think the old Spiderman movies were better than the Amazing Spiderman movies. The villians had more depth. The story made more sense. And Maguire stayed true to the character more than Garfield did. Peter Parker is a nerd. Spiderman is a hero.
Straight to the point!
Garfield was also a nerd but just different from most nerd in movies.
Loren Nordom Garfield just wasn't a stereotypical nerd. All a "nerd" is, is someone who is extremely interested in one specific thing and has a large amount of knowledge about it.
Honestly, I feel like Peter Parker should be a shy and awkward nice guy outside of the mask, but once he puts the mask on, he lets loose a bit. He makes jokes, he says things he wants to say but wouldn't normally. The anonymity of the mask gives him the freedom to be who he wants to be.
I peraonally think the old ones are better too
Remember that time when nostalgia critic said that the Amazing Spiderman reboot was better than the original? Yeah I've been suppressing that thought too. (Made some decent points but still)

Darn it! I made the same comment. Now I have to delete it.
@@jimbojackson4045 "I missed the part where thats my problem."
Yeah I feel like Doug missed this one. Tobey's Peter Parker was so awkward and hard to accept as Spiderman, but being able to look at that side of him and changing to a successfully free-spirited, energetic, Spiderman really gives the movie more depth. It shows he's more comfortable being Spiderman (who he really is). And that being Peter Parker is as anxious and emotionally volatile as the common person is.... without super powers. but much more amplified because he's holding himself back.
What really sold the old Spiderman for me was the fact that there were such defined locations and showed a livelihood on the ground and not swinging between buildings all the time. There were birthday parties, offices, a train, labs, dining rooms, theatres, a festival, a bank, a restaurant, a church. All well defined and hard to forget. The newer Spiderman didn't feel like there were a lot of locations used to create memorable scenes, I felt like there was more scenes of him swinging from building to building way too often. And who can forget the importance of how a good sound track compliments the scenes? I don't say it to sound like a fanboy, but as a critic I still will go with the old Spiderman, without hesitation.
27:32 Bruh, he was going through some real mental crises. It wasn't just because "it was hard".
Jake Stone the new spiderman had more “mental crises” than the old one
The old one was letting his dicl do the talking
The new one has the death of his girlfriend and his girlfriends father who told him to him to stay her out of trouble
HE LOST HIS POWERS FOR NO REASON WHICH WAS A STUPID SUB PLOT AND ONE OF THE REASON'S I "HATE" "HATE" Sam Raimi's Spiderman 2 the only good thing about it was Stoping the Train scene, the Music and The Game which handled the Story SOOOOO much better than the film. The first Sam Raimi film was Legendary but Sam Raimi spiderman 2 was garbage
In the new movies he quits being Spider-Man for about 5 minutes of fucking screen time, the gloss over it in a montage, how can you say that was even more emotionally impactful? And he stops dating Gwen because of her fathers death for even less time, these moments SHOULD be more impactful but the movies themselves do a terrible job of presenting that
Nee koo Lie well, maguires Spider-Man was going through a hell of a lot as well, more than just life being stressful. Being Spider-Man was literally destroying his entire life, he had no money, got fired from his jobs, failing college, girl he loves hates him, his best friend hates him, his uncle died, his aunt even got pissed at him when he came clean about ben and she was losing her home, New York hated him because of JJ.. He pretty much had nothing
Honestly both Tobey's and Andrew's version of Spiderman had valid reasons for quitting.
Tobey's reason was that the stresses of being both Peter and Spiderman were becoming too much and caused his body to react causing him to lose his powers. Without his powers he can't be Spiderman, and he thought he lost them forever.
Andrew's was due to the fact he lost the love of his life and her father and thought what use is it to be a hero when he can't even save his loved ones.
Now as for how the movies showed this and handled their returns, the original showcased how he was adjusting to his normal life and even showed him faced with a decision to either stop a mugging or go on with his day (granted they didn't do that part well) and when he returned it's because his powers came back along showing her never wanted to give it up to begin with and gets into a fight that nearly kills him.
Andrew's shown sitting at home for like a minute and then listens to Gwen's graduation speech (which didn't sound like a graduation speech at all and was just a speech designed specifically to sound motivational for him) and then he's back to saving people and we don't even get to see the fight.
I can agree with most of this, except the last part. When Nostalgia Critic asks "Which Spiderman would you rather be?", my answer is "Garfield, because the only real difficulty in his life is being a superhero. Maguire had to deal with a lot of real-world shit that most people would love to skip." This is why Maguire's Spiderman is more relatable: he actually has to deal with everyday life, and it's hard, even though he has super powers. It shows that he is one of us, and (as Aunt May says) we all have a bit of a hero inside of us. It makes him relatable.
Not everyone is a scientific genius with a hot scientific girlfriend who is madly in love with us and is super supportive. However, most of us have gone through struggling to keep a job, struggling with finances, and struggling with a relationship. That's what makes Maguire more relatable, and therefore, in my opinion, a better character. That, and the fact being a snarky jackass is his exception, not his norm.
Cano Lathra yes very well put
Thats cause toby looks like an actual adult. Cant keep him as a high schooler for more than 30 minutes
Cano Lathra That's the exact reasons why I love the Tobey Maguire versions better. Mainly the first and second
Most of us have gone through a loss, as well as tried to be there for the ones we still have. We also try and be a better person after each faliure or success; new films simply have a better overarching continuity. It feels unnatural and forced when Tobey makes a quip, cause he's given little time to actually gain this much confidence. Even by the end of the first movie, he still is relatively unsure of himself. With Garfield, he's like that already, so it makes more sense, coupled with the fact that his jokes are funnier.
Come on tell me Maguire had three movies now many did Andrew get to movies so sad so sad
See if I was in the place of the hyper fan, the old one would've won. 100% The only point we we would've lost is the love interest for the movies.
That’s really all Amazing Spiderman has over it. Peter and MJ was the only thing I hated about the Rami films.

Well, Doug was saying that Michael Keaton was the better Batman because he managed to capture both Bruce Wayne and Batman, the socialite that could assuage people's suspicions and the brooding hero that could strike fear into criminals. In this, Spider-Man is just a dude, so he doesn't need to worry about rubbing elbows with tons of people and has the media breathing down his neck, meaning that those eccentricities can be presented a little more without worry. Of course the actor is gonna need to bring that side out in their performance. If not, the audience is gonna be scratching their heads like, "THIS guy is Spider-Man?"
Also, of course there's "bias", its a little something called an opinion. You may not agree with it or even like it, but you gotta live with it.

WAIT WAIT WAIT
Mcguire just quit cuz it was hard? He quit because he wasn't sure if he wanted to keep being a super hero. He started because he wanted to get revenge for his uncle's death and then kept doing it to protect those in need. However, no matter how many times he saved people, either more bad guys would show up, or the public would say he was a menace because of the rhetoric of J. Jonah Jameson. He wasn't sure if he was actually making a difference and he thought that maybe people had a point. Spiderman has had that character arc in so many different adaptations. They even did it in the Ultimate Spiderman tv show.
Spiderman quitting because he was grieving is out of character, and like just think of all the lives he could have saved in a version of the city that doesn't hate him all because he was depressed.

Not to mention Garfield quit because one person died, one person. "Oh but he loves her" he loved uncle Ben too, did he give up then, no he became a superhero. People die all the time, it's a comic book. Did comic Spidey give up then, no. Why? Cause he's a real hero

Answer from 15:24 "Poor Peter Parker. No mother, no father, no uncle, all alone."
Toby actually quit being spider man because he LOST HIS POWERS.
Mozh Hosseini that's kind of stupid tho. The thing that makes a superhero a well hero is the fact that they're willing to fight despite the loss of power because it's the right thing. That's why characters like Batman are cool because they're willing to face danger superhuman level without having any powers
Jedisofreddit the training isn't what makes him Batman. Like how his alien origins isn't what makes superman a hero. It's the fact they don't need powers to do good. The superpowers are just a tool to do good and are losing them should not prevent any hero from doing their job of helping
@@williamnguyen8663 Except his powers is what allows him to help people in first place. Without them he doesn't have the training to continue being a hero. Batman is able to be a superhero because he has the training, and the gadgets to do so. If didn't train for years to be who he is, then he would have been killed by the first punk with a gun he stood up against.
Jdude Gaming Inc. the spiderverse alone proves that it isn't Spider-Man power that makes him a hero. The reason homecoming was such a. Good movie was it proved that Peter Parker made Spider-Man not the other way around. The superpowers are just a tool to fight crime and it is the individual will to do good that makes them the hero. Spider-Man knows martial arts and that alone could be used to stop a lot of average criminals.
Jedisofreddit well guess I'll chalk that up to another problem Toby films had. They forgot that it wasn't the powers that made him a hero but the person he was.
she's wearing a TASM 1 suit while defending Maguire....WHAT?!!?!?!?!?!
TASM 1 Had a bad costume. The colors were bland, dark and washed out, the spider on the chest was ridiculously oversized, the eyes were too small and were gold for some reason, etc.
Mysterious Enigma well he made them out of sunglasses which (in terms of lore) is accurate
Ah. Makes sense.
I am so glad that the newer films actually showed Peter designing the Spider-suit and web-shooters because it's an important element of SHOWING Peter's gift with science and technology, which doesn't happen in the original films because we only HEAR about it(which isn't always believable unless you SHOW it).
+Anthony Nunez They show it a lot, most prominently in the scene where Peter talks to Dr. Octavius, understands immediately what he's doing and even figures out there's a miscalculation. That's pretty impressive. And in case I have to remind you, Andrew's Peter needed UA-cam videos to learn how the most basic things work and even then he didn't fully understand it. They totally dumbed him down.
Coincidentally, Tobey's Peter didn't have to create web-shooters because he had organic ones. Duh.
For the people in the comment section saying that “Tom Holland wins”
First of all, he’s literally the least accurate live action Spider-Man, Ik a movie doesn’t need to be comic accurate to be a good movie, HoCo is a good movie but it handled the character horribly.
2nd. Homecoming lacks consequences except in the last act he only gets suit taken away that’s all, there was no peril at losing his loves ones at all.
3rd. There was no Uncle Ben, and people always say that “It’s not an origin story, we don’t need to see him die again” “It takes place months after Uncle Ben died so it wouldn’t make sense if see Peter talk about him again” it pisses me off so much when i hear those things, people are forgetting that Spectacular Spider-man (Animated TV show that aired in Cartoon Network) additionally took place months after Uncle Ben’s death and handled the character super well without forgetting the consequential elements of the character.
4th. The only reason it gets that much support is because it’s from the MCU and because MCU fangirls find Tom Holland “hot”, I have no problems with them fortifying him for whatever reasons they like but when they say “he’s the most comic accurate one” that’s what i always find wrong
Tom Holland is a great actor and was probably a great choice if they made the MCU one like Ultimate Spider-man, Him and Ultimate Peter have the same physique, Jon Watts ruined the impeccable opportunity.
What would've helped improve Spider-Man by the end of Homecoming is making him realize he no longer needs to do his hero work to impress Tony Stark, but to just do it for the good of the people. He could distance himself from the Avengers and no longer idolize Tony, but still harbor some respect for them and what they do. They could've handled it so much more maturely, but they didn't.
People change their opinion on the “Perfect Live Action Spider-Man” every time a new one is made, when The Amazing Spider-Man came out everyone was all “This is it, this is the perfect representation of Spider-Man, forget that Tobey Maguire guy” and then when Tom Holland became Spider-Man everyone was like “Now THIS is the perfect Spider-Man, screw Andrew Garfield, this is the true representation of Spider-Man” And even if they wanna deny it now I guarantee that somewhere down the road once a new live action Spider-Man comes out everyone is once again gonna go “This is it, the perfect live action Spider-Man, fuck Tom Holland, this is the best representation ever” So I guess according to a lot of Spider-Man fans newer is always better
I disagree but I getya. Have you seen far from home?
It would be interesting to redo this now, and throw Tom Holland into the mix (maybe Miles from Into the Spiderverse too?)
Well actually Critic, Maguire's Spidey quit because he was slowly losing his powers, but work induced stress was likely part of it as well.

Annoying kid
So... his aunt was there watching him get choked out by the Lizard? I don’t remember that scene. Because I’m pretty sure Conners was implying that Spider-Man is alone in general, not that everyone he knows is dead.
@@mv9370 uh he is alone was there a scene where aunt may helps him no gwen couldnt because she was making the cure in fact the only person their was CAPTIAN STACY WHO YOU KNOW DIED AS ABRUBTLY AS HE SHOWED UP WHAT A BIG HELP HE WAS
NC: Garfield, the superior hero.
Me: So you're saying he's a... Superior Spider-Man?
I don't care if I'm flamed it was worth it.
Hey, I chuckled.
Well played.. :)
Touché
I dont get it
+StreetBot there is a comic called the superior Spiderman where doc ock is in Peters body
Toby McGuire all the way. As I like to say is that you can never out beat the original.
@Merciless Freak I haven’t seen him after the Spider-Man Trilogy so I can’t say much about him after his role as Spider-Man . I live by you can never outdo the original because without the original you don’t have the remake.
@@jessicashannon4178 the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire will always be the best (and only good) Spider-Man movies. The Amazing Spider-Man movies were garbage.
@Jack Sparrow look in the mirror if you wanna see what sucks! The Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire movies were and always will be the best Spider-Man movies. The acting was SUPERB! Everybody was right for their roles, Willem Dafoe was fantastic as Green Goblin in the first one. The train scene in the second one was awesome as well as the hospital scene with Doc Ock. Uncle Ben and Aunt May had played a big part in why they were great movies too… Bens line “with great power comes great responsibility” and Mays line “I believe there’s a hero in all of us.”
Now the third one was kinda silly. But those movies were great. The Amazing Spider-Man movies were GARBAGE. And I didn’t care for the Tom Holland movies either
@Jack Sparrow I already pointed out examples to you of how they’re NOT corny.
And if you still say they’re corny then I can’t say anything else. I do agree with you that Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker cried a little too much. But aside from that they were the best Spider-Man movies. The Amazing Spider-Man movies were weak, not to mention pointless. Homecoming was too much of a “kids movie” for my taste
I’m just glad that Tom Holland gave us both the nerdy awkward Peter Parker, and the cocky smartass Spider-Man.
24:53 - To be fair, Critic, "fucking anything" in the example presented is "My best friend who I've just reconnected with after years of heartache has just died in my arms". The truth is, Peter has a particularly sad, tiresome life in in the original trilogy. It's made very clear how he quietly suffers under his exhausting realities, so that when he cries, it is not only fitting but very heartfelt, and I can't think of a scene where it feels out of place. The character is made deeper by how he is strong enough to put up a remarkable front that belies his misery, but also vulnerable enough to visibly labor under all the pressure.
Toby Maguire peter parker did NOTquit being spiderman because it was just HARD. He LOST his powers!
and followed the best comic story ever Spider-man No more
but didn't he lose his powers because he lacked faith in himself? Because he was already shaken over chosing spider man or mj? He was undecided and that doubt of spider man being the best choice led to his loss in power. He had already made his mind up to quit which is why he was so happy, he only got his powers back when he realized that he needed them to protect the woman he loved. When that desire became necessary is when he chose to do what was needed rather than what he wanted.
@@jasonsmith3032 Are you sure is not in the part where he jumps of a building or the part he saves a little girl from a fire
@@sliut1 he, is always spiderman but his powers were inconsistent when his faith was shaken. When he started to lose his webbing the second time, he comments on it and says, "Not again" His powers fell short but he survived the fall because he needed too. When he saved the little girl he had the strength and ability because he needed to have it. You seen him for a second waver thinking spidey could do it, but can I? He still doubted. When Doc oc attacked though, he knew that he could not and only spidey could.
RAM TUBE yeah making it hard for him to do it!
In the same vein of best Stan Lee cameo, one could argue that Rami managing to to work in Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead references in such a way that it felt perfectly natural in all 3 movies acts a perfect foil to stan's perfect cameo.
I am unsubscribing the winner is obviously Sam Raimi's Spiderman
Spiderman 2 is still the best Spiderman movie, on its own. Molina owns it as Doc. Oc, Maguire is at his most awesome as Peter AND Spiderman, although it's not a lot it's still the most interesting Mary Jane ever gets, the action is AMAZINGLY GOOD, the story is interesting, it has a lot less corniness... it's the best out of the five movies mentioned in this video, hands down.
Also it inspired the Spiderman 2 video game, easily the best Spiderman game we've ever gotten.
It just wins.
Draukagrissah Ultimate Spiderman is the best Spider Man game
Commander Shepard Dude, it isn't even out.
Draukagrissah Homecoming is the best Spiderman movie ever.
DeadlyGapple Honestly I still think it's second. Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite.
Spider-Man 1 and 2 were equal, they were the best and only good Spider-Man movies
Doug needs to bring this series back. Like if you agree.
Like if you don't know what the like button was created for.
"Like because I want likes."
+Somali Kamikaze The mad max review was kind of an old versus new, but I see what you're saying.
Normally I would rant about how Tom Holland is the best Spiderman, but this video was made long before Tom Holland's Spiderman even existed... and that's why I'd like to see the Nostalgia Critic make an update on this video some day!
Three way battle
Hyber fangirl: "How can you like the new then the original"
Me: Aren't you wearing a spider Man costume based on the new?
The point of Peter and Mary Jane going back and forth with whether or not to be in a relationship was to show the way Peter was willing to pass on the relationship he dreamed of to protect her, it shows that he is selfless and heroic
Yet you can't deny how emotionally crippling that is for both of them
Too bad Mary Jane was such a toxic girlfriend and a toxic friend. I’ll never forgive her for treating Peter like dirt during the second film just because he didn’t show up to her play despite trying his hardest and didn’t stop to think of how much stress he was under in trying to balance both his superhero and adult life. Makes me want to rub some dirt in her eye.
@@hunterolaughlinShe didn't know he was a superhero until the end of the 2nd movie. And remember, she asked him out at the end of the 1st movie and he friendzoned her. While the audience knows he was trying to protect her, she doesn't.
@@Blokewood3 Still though, even if she didn’t know about his superhero identity until the end of the film, that’s still doesn’t excuse her treatment of him. She should’ve at least been understanding and sympathetic towards him and forgiven him for not showing up to her play, not hold it a grudge against him. She still acted like a jerk to him throughout the film. If someone treats you like that, it’s best to cut your losses.
Old is better. Why you ask? J. K Simmons as J. Jonah Fucking Jameson that's why!
*slaps own thigh and laughs manically*
Hell Yeah!!!!
He is the best when I saw him in the comics I always imagined him like that
Also the fact that the originals actually have J Jonah
The guy deserves an Oscar for practically reincarnating a guy made out of ink into real flesh and blood with 0 difference
+PenelopeInoueV2 you didn't like Willem defoe
I honestly like Gwen and MJ the same, but I think what makes Gwen a little better is that like Critic says, she has her own character. She's a science genius, she's off to a really great college, she knows how to solve problems, etc. MJ, all we know is that she acts, came from a troubled home, is nice, and that's it. So basically, you could easily replace Mary Jane with anybody. You could even have her with be blonde, and boom, you have Gwen Stacy! But again, I like them both the same.
The crying can be annoying, but Tobey's Spider-Man is still best in my eyes. Not that I think Tobey gives the best performance or is the best actor (cuz I don't), but the way has character was written best showed who the character is at his core. The character of Peter Parker is a person who believes "with great power comes great responsibility". This Spider-man shows the burden that comes with. His best friend thinks his alter ego murdered his father, his crush who he had the chance to be with thinks he's unreliable because he's never around. He has trouble being their support his only living relative who needs his help. He begins to suffer academically because he can't keep up with school work. His boss is always trying to smear his character. Despite his personal life suffering he continues to be a hero because he learned the consequences of not using his power for good.
Garfield's Spider-Man never really felt like he sacrificed much. His Aunt didn't seem to need him and he was in a great relationship from very early. Tobey's Peter could have been with MJ at the end of the first film, but he turned her down because he saw what happened to her and his aunt when someone figured out who he was. Andrew's Peter continues to see Gwen even after her dying father asked him no to, so she could be safe.
I have the same criticism of Tom's Spider-Man. His Aunt doesn't rely on him. He has a great friend. He has a billionaire as a mentor who built him a suit with an AI in it to help him do everything.
I agree with your statement on tobey. I think that tom's spiderman lives in a different world, more modern and also he isn't the only superhero around (he's more like a boy with powers and a superhero costume than a spiderman, he is more like a spiderboy). I like that his aunt is an independent woman who doesn't need peter's or spiderman's help. I think his struggles are more catered to the world he is in. How does he stay relevant where there are tons of superheros flying around, how does he acknowledges the responsibilities of a superhero despite being just a kid, learning the value of trust and honesty... yea sure he doesn't have the struggles young adults have, he has more teenager struggles and that's oki imo.
@@bendovbloch7630 I like Tom's Spiderman for the MCU. I think his character is getting better as he gets older and more independent. I'm glad they made changes to make him different and fresh. However, the entire idea of the character of Spiderman is that "with great power comes great responsibility". This is true for every Peter Parker in the comics. He isn't Spiderman because he necessarily wants to be, but because he feels he has the responsibility to due so. That's the character at his core. I just don't get that strong of a sense from the MCU Spiderman because they never gave his backstory as to why he feels he needs to be Spiderman. They also don't really give him a reason not to Spiderman. IDK I guess I would like to this explored more in future films. Perhaps as he gets older and has more of a complex life to balance.
@@ajl9772 ye I agree with you. I hope to see him evolve more as the movies carry on.
I agree with everything--except the Tom bit because I haven't seen his movies yet--but I would argue that Garfield's Peter was still punished in a way because Gwen ended up dying, and he eventually had to recover from that and face responsibility once again because he couldn't quit.
