You absolutely NAILED the part about the destruction/regression of Steve Rogers' entire character arc, and the fact that people were so willing to accept that *horrible* ending for him (because of a poorly-written hetero "romance") says it all. The perfect litmus test for the Steve and Bucky scenario is the fact that if Bucky had been written as "Becky" (but with no other element of the films changed), they would have the most popular and enduring canon love story in the entire MCU.
Buckys character in the mcu origin was based off Arnie Roth one of the first gay men in comic books because making Bucky a child soldier would’ve been frowned upon
When you mentioned Clarks father being afraid of him being taken away and experimented on by the government, that hit really close to home because when I was a child thats what I genuinely thought would happen to me if I ever mentioned that I liked guys. I genuinely believed that it was so abnormal and wrong that the government would run experiments on me and I was terrified of that.
just started watching this and burst out laughing at: THEY! ARE! GAY! Yes, you are correct, excited to watch the rest, also wiiiild to me that people can make a narrative over and over that boils down to "my intrinsic self [superpower allegory] is demonised by parents/society/media/etc. in various ways, even though there is nothing wrong with me and I am going to learn through this narrative to love and accept myself," and not see... how that... is...gay... (not to mention all the dressing up in fab outfits and the camp in the making of them)
As a brazilian I MUST tell what happened after 42:05. People got so mad that the mayor tryed to ban a book in a major book event that is know for having absolutely all kinds of books in the market, that ALL of the copies of the Marvel comic book in the event were sold out in less than 48 hours, so they couldn't ban any book because they all got sold already. Then the mayor team got after other lgbt books in the fair, saying it would be collected and put in a black envelope saying "not suited for -18". Again, nobody liked and people started doing protests, buying and hyding those lgbt+ titles and intimidating the book sensorship team that got to collect the books. Also, a guy bought a ton of lgbt+ books in response and distributed it for free on the entry of the fair. All the books were covered in a black envelope, with the advise "this book is not suited for homophobes and biggots", something like that.... Basically, the mayor needed to gave up.

You forgot about Green Lantern of Earth 2, Alan Scott, who was written as gay in an issue of Green Lantern for the New 52. His fiance had died in a train crash and he used the ring he was going to propose to him as his green lantern ring.
In the current DC Universe, Richard "Dick" Grayson is bisexual. Prehaps even xenosexual as one of his early partners is Starfire, his Teen Titan teammate.
The Superman vs Clark scene is one of my first “oh I’m gay” moments. Actually, I think the very first of such moments was in the first Superman when he was chained with kryptonite and thrown into the pool. Something about him all wet and vulnerable in that tight spandex omg.
I hate how they only make morally gray people bi or pan. Deadpool, Rosa Diaz, Petra solano , Eleanor shellstrop, etc. I love morally gray characters but when you only have morally gray characters be bi/pan you’re saying that quality is a morally gray or deviant quality
I was going to make a joke about how "if all super heroes are gay, is that why I, a pansexual, prefer anti-heroes?" but instead I just got a reality check
What a wonderful video. Just to let you know, I 100% agree with you about Bryan Singer. His involvement of queering it up should be noted, but that doesn't mean you (or I) are a fan of him as a person or brush all the shitty stuff under the rug. Any mention of the X-Men in queer superhero context always warms my heart. They are the reason I love superheroes so much and at point in my life I was old enough so some things clicked for me. Arguably before Karolina Dean there was Karma from the New Mutants, but her official outing as a lesbian happened in a mostly forgotten mini (Mekanix; and of course she had a crush on Kitty). Plus sadly Karma is a background player. Somewhere there is an alternate universe, where Chris Claremont was allowed to queer up the X-Men openly and I'd like to go there. Reading Young Avengers was delightful and every team should be so openly queer. Made everything more fun! Thanks for the Schumacher Batman stuff in here. I do embrace the camp and can appreciate them a bit more now. (I enjoy quotes and scenes more than watching them start to finish though. Mentioning this, because all the power to you for loving that Superman-fighting-Clark-scene.) Great video, thanks for the work you put into this.
Absolutely love your videos. All are fantastically well done and thoroughly researched. Thank you so much for the insightful perspective you provided here. Please make many more video essays. I am looking greatly forward to all new uploads from you! If I may, I would like to give just one constructive feedback; the volume difference between your spoken words and the title music (when you start a new segment in the video), is too big. I need to raise the volume a lot when I am listening to you speak, but when the music comes in, I am practically deafened by the loud sound difference. Equalising the volume across your video would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Can’t wait for more essays from you!

Yeah, so CORRECTION: He’s actually the Earth-X version of Captain Cold who is brought to the main storyline universe after one of the crossovers and becomes the Main Captain Cold there since that universe’s og Cold who was first introduced was dead by then, and new, From-Earth-X Captain Cold is gay, not bi. The first trans and lesbian characters on your list should be Cloud and Moondragon of the New Defenders. Cloud was a celestial entity with the ability to change genders and struggled with her attraction for Moondragon, an openly lesbian member of the Defenders. This was published in the mid 80s.
Moondragon's bi actually. Originally she pursued Wendell Vaughn (Quasar 1) partially due to possible possession by the Moondragon. There was a bullshit prophecy about her getting with someone named Quasar. Later on she got with Phyla (Quasar 2/Captain Marvel number 4/5 maybe?/ Martyr). Sorry to be nitpicky.

yey, surprise obscurus lupa; the other day i was hearing a nerd talk about "how gay comics are today" the one saying that had a shirt of watchmen, yes, people is that stupid
In my mind, they could introduce an openly gay character without addressing the character's sexuality in crossover/assemble films but still address the gay character's sexuality in smaller budget films. Like, giving an LGBT character the Joker treatment on standalone films and still invite him or her to be part of the bigger budget films. I'm not sure, however, which character could that be, as it would need to be someone you can feature on a lower budget film. It's not ideal but I don't see a gay Black Panther anytime soon. In the meantime it would be a foot in the door. And would put more homophobic markets in the weird position of starting to notice that they are missing out thanks to their government.
