The 1.5 years immediately after retirement were the hardest of my life. I never had felt so alone and unneeded in life. It was a hard fog to find my way out of.
@The Dr. John Delony Show, I think the bigger question that needs to be asked is "why doesn't the government have a transitioning program put into place for our military who are rotating back into civilian life? They go through MOS, and tons of other Mititary education. Their last 6 months should be on how to take the leadership, teamwork and utility skills learned in the service and translate them into the civilian workforce.
During my transition there were a ton of resources. I don’t believe that is the problem. What I ran into was losing a sense of purpose and comradery. It takes time to accept that part of life is over and turn the page. Once that is over things get easier.
When I was getting out they had months of resources but we didn’t pay attention and just wanted to check the box. Most situations it’s our own fault, but they didn’t explain it in a way that it was behoove us to take it serious. A lot of times when vets are getting out we think the world is going to be at our disposal but we all learn civilian life isn’t what we remembered
I know someone who is an Army Ranger and they have a whole entire year after they are done where they process out before they enter civilian life. So it does exist in some places in the military
All military personnel were civilians long before they went in the military. Its like riding a bike...you don't forget. If you are so institutionalized and cant separate 100% ordered compliance over the civilian method of choice you should not be getting out. Military is very unique in that much is provided and much expected! The other 98% of the World gets up everyday with the responsibility of figuring out where your value may be and then following that path to earn it. Uncle Sam tells you everyday and the free World allows you to choose.
Thank you for your service. I too had a difficult transition. One of my worst memories was coming home from Iraq around THANKSGIVING. After almost 18months of controlled entrances and exits and controlong those pathways a GROCERY STORE was overwhelming. I had no control or idea who was coming or going and I was in fear for my life.
I’m a Desert Shield/Storm vet, and I have gone back to Iraq 3xs and Kosovo 2xs on private contracts, as a police trainer/bomb dog handler. It’s weird hearing the names of some of those companies. I’ve never heard them mentioned before, except for Shawn. As for the “thank you for your service”, it surprises me when someone says it to me. But, as a female, I still get some sexism. One Veterans Day, I was in Burger King. I gave my order, moved over, to wait for it. 2 men came in, and the worker asked them if they were veterans. Both were. Don’t remember what they got, but I looked at the worker, and said “You didn’t ask me if I was a veteran.” Her face turned bright red. I wasn’t hostile or loud, just stated a fact. She then asked me if I was. I said yes, but I didn’t say it to get something free, just to make her realize, there are a lot of us female vets walking around.
I came across a similar thing with convo's between wives of vets; they never say 'these men and women give so much of their lives....", it's always "these men...". This surprised me as I would have expected 'military' families to be consciously more inclusive in their language.
I work for a Pedorthist and we provide shoes to Vets through the VA. It is my greatest honor to be able to serve those who have sacrificed so much for us. I thank each one for their service before I leave. I am an Air Force brat so I do understand a little better than most the sacrifices that they made. One gentleman ( a Vietnam Vet) said “thank you so much for recognizing my service. I rarely ever hear a thank you from anyone.” It made me sad that people today don’t respect these soldiers, male and female, and their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families.
Thank you for showcasing a Vets perspective in terms of appreciation. In the past, I have been reluctant to say to a service person, “Thank you for your service” so it would not come across as trite for what hardships they had gone through in and out military service.
I dated a man who found a veteren near his home. The vet had lost his eyesight due to a mine. He would visit him and donate money to help him out. I thought it was so genuine to give him his time.
I say thank vets all of the time if I know they served. I’m surprised hearing comments that vets do not hear it hardly ever. Many folks I know also thank vets. I hope more folks give a thank you to our servicemen and women
He correct about veterans benefits and how they work . Did not know they get a % after they retire. Met many vets who get basically nothing and have to drive 1 1/2 hrs to see a dr or get treatment .
The hardest part transitioning for me was the work ethic we had in the Navy vs civilian jobs. We took attention to detail and did the right thing, for the right reason, the 1st time. Civilians just don’t give a crap. They will deliver whatever job performance out there that they feel like; until evaluation time, then they tried to get squared away. Then a month later, start slacking off again.
I appreciate EACH & EVERY SINGLE person who has been brave enough to NOT ONLY defend our country but also show strangers (even the bitches that spit in their faces& cleans nasty shoes on our flag) RESPECT and LOVE!! at times, I find it difficult to express how greatful I am of them into words.. I will pass your thanks to my children and my wives. They actually sacrificed more than anyone understands.” “Your wives?” “Yes the military life is seldom compatible with married life.”
First I thank you for your service as I served also. Lets not skim over the fact that your 20 years dedicated to Uncle Sam was the Golden Egg era of Peace time participation just as my years in service were. The l20 years before your career and the 20 years after 2003 were real battles and wars that true Veterans sacraficed real losses. I'm always embarassed when thanked for my peacetime service. I feel like I cheated on a exam. Although critically important to be trained and ready and under Uncle Sams thumb it's not the same sacrafice as war time will exact. Too many soldiers are credited with time in service and not deployment location. Again, thank you for your service as its no small commitment to be owned by your employer which has complete Tyrannical rule upon your life for the time in service. I just wish more soldiers had a bit of humility when the word sacrafice gets used in their Honor.
Soldiers are trained to kill. Anybody who lives in denial of it and expects them to switch that mind frame into a civilized and friendly one has an illusion, especially if they have been soldiers for many years. You become what you do 8 hours a day. Soldiers have a life where they are not only 8 hours under special psychological demand but really 24/7 non stop or they can't perform according to their uniform. The mind frame of a soldier has to be opposite of civil behavior just to survive. So to expect that they can switch after many years is a terrible mistake and psychologically impossible. It would take massive reprogramming to get that out of their system. That is the reason why for example marriages and relationships of service members have very high numbers of domestic violence and also violent crimes. But I respect every one who tries and struggles with this issue. It's a high goal.
You forgot to take into account what type of person they were before the military, not everyone who joines the service is a good person, So many blame the military on D.V is not holding abusers accountable
I went in 2011 as infantry. they drill in your head kill kill kill. u March and everything u say is kill. u learn the basic skills and longer you stay in your if u go special operations u become an expert basically in weapon systems comms etc. it's crazy going back civilian jobs people crying and complaining bout not having a long enough break or enough smoke breaks.

I operated radios in the Army (very expensive, complicated ones, but a radio is still a radio), but without those radios--which were powered by generators maintained by gen. mechanics for which I am immensely grateful!--the guys kicking in doors wouldn't be able to call for support, the intel they gathered would never have made it back to the REMFs, and the MEDEVAC and CASEVAC vehicles would never have known where to go to pick up our wounded troopers, etc. I've been with and without gen. mechs; I'd prefer to have one any day of the week! You don't "just" run generators. You keep the power up, which lets everyone connected do their respective jobs, whether behind a desk or in a turret. Thank you for your service.
Work at the VA in a surgical subspecialty - we try to give our patients the best possible care but they keep cutting our funding, salaries and call pay.
I just recently got out of the army... about a year out and maannnnnn this is a process Im doing well but the loneliness is crippling. And i just feel lost. I think im going thru like mutliple mental breakdowns or somethings. Im trying tho, ill make it

And I know some that are absolutely 100 physically able...kayaking white water or running Iron Man's...who still somehow have managed to get 100 disability. It's quite confounding. It's hard to imagine how it's not fraud that they're getting thousands of dollars and disability from the government every month, but it happens all the time. Disabled vets should absolutely get the support but there seems to be so much fraud in that system with able-bodied people getting so many benefits!
I remember in 2009 I was at Master-at-Arms Navy “A” school. This was at Lackland Air Force San Antonio Texas. After they pulled Blackwater out of the Middle East they used them to train active duty. Those guys were some of the most intense bad ass dudes who knew their shite when it came to firearms and tactics. Some were kind of crazy but I liked most of them lol looking back now o was in my early 20s didn’t know shite, we were dealing with guys out of the Wild West essentially after all the craziness that went on in Iraq with Blackwater. They were cool but you could see the lethality and killer instinct coldness on them when they were training us (sailors)
I'm a veteran myself. I was a pog, and i hate how veterans, especially combat arms guys have been treated. I often dont feel like my words would be valued because i wasnt combat arms in regards to how poorly the country treats it's service memebers.
Having contracted for the last 10 years (not his type of contract work), I don't see how it is cheaper for the government to hire contractors even if they aren't paying benefits etc. That is what is always reported. But, the government then stands up contract units of government employees. Attorney time when contracts are disputed. Government employees get tasked with being Contracting Officer Representative (COR) or Alternate Contract Officer Representative (ACOR) taking away from their real duties. Contracts get delayed or protested. People take weeks to get their government computer or Common Access Card (CAC). There's so much down time starting up a contract waiting for access (nothing moves fast in government)...People jump ship at end of contracts when it's clear they won't win it again. There's not good project turnover.
Love it or hate it, the government is still a massive bureaucracy and the military branches are a subsidiary of that govt. It can be immensely frustrating, but also incredibly difficult to effect change in an organization with millions of employees.
All honorably discharged veterans should get E-1 base pay for life or their disability rating, whichever is higher. All 100 percent P&T should automatically get SSDI. The federal government should bring back the civilian conservation corp. Let veterans run it and employ people who are currently homeless
i feel like i have heard some vets say, they dont all wanna hear "thank you for your service." can one speak for all? would every vet want to hear this??
in the military the culture is drinking. we drank everyday after training until we passed out woke up to get to PT in the morning hungover go through a whole day of training hungover then do it again. i couldnt do that now in my 30s but my early 20s i didnt care or feel it

It's not fucking cheaper... The contractor guys putting armor on were getting $225k/year, tax free. We had heavy mechanics that could do the same thing. But nope.

My poor wife deals with me everyday, i twitch at night, i dont sleep and im always aggressive. The VA is a joke and i have to pay for my own services. I had 3 deployments, and im not saying thats alot but it was alot on me

Unless you go to work for the mafia as a leg breaker or hit man (enforcer) how will your trained to kill experience transition to civilian life?

He so right about Va disability claims. I know more non combat vets with 100% than combat vets.

My BIL was a transitioner for the Army but dont think it was for a mental transition, just benefits.

in the military the culture is drinking. we drank everyday after training until we passed out woke up to get to PT in the morning hungover go through a whole day of training hungover then do it again. i couldnt do that now in my 30s but my early 20s i didnt care or feel it

I’d say get another government job or get into a shipyard. Trust me you don’t want to go into private sector

Don’t minimize anyone’s service - no matter their mos, afsc, etc - less than 2% of population was even willing to serve.
It's not fucking cheaper... The contractor guys putting armor on were getting $225k/year, tax free. We had heavy mechanics that could do the same thing. But nope.

My poor wife deals with me everyday, i twitch at night, i dont sleep and im always aggressive. The VA is a joke and i have to pay for my own services. I had 3 deployments, and im not saying thats alot but it was alot on me
