    Hi! IM_Amazon here (though I usually go by TDR_Zunga these days). If it's not too much to ask, might it be possible to link "Fighter's Destiny: the Declassified Guide" in the description? I dont think doing so in YT comments works and I'd love for anyone interested to be able to make the same deep dive you did! Cheers

    I honestly think it's time we revisit the "Tournament Fighter" style of fighting games. It captured more of what a real competition fight can be like. Point system, point win conditions, multiple defenses that were just as important as your attacks... More importantly INSTANT gratification for the correct read, no combo strings or messing around - they over step, you knock them on their ass and the judge calls it. You reset and go again.

    • @Iam-zs9cn

      Seriously, I wish all the focus on input-execution was toned down in fighting games. Command inputs were a nessecity when we had a grand total of 2-4 buttons and a d-pad. But those days are long past, and the only reason we still have command inputs is because of community gatekeeping.

    • @2thre3
      @2thre3 22 дні тому +33

      @@Iam-zs9cn - There were 8 accessible buttons on an N64 controller and a D-pad. The choices mad in Fighters Destiny were clearly to accommodate the vision of the game.
      Strict input in fighting games is par for the course and I'm far from a "Community gatekeeper" when I tell you that I think you're wrong about this. Each game has it's tropes. Fighters Destiny defined itself round multiple win conditions, timing and a near rock paper scissors approach to fighting - as I said similar to actual martial arts tourneys. KOF or Street Fighter have their tropes, Anime fighters have theirs... It's not about gatekeeping it's about stylistic choices and keeping brand identity.
      Another thing I'd like to add is landing difficult to master combos and special moves feels great and rewards time put in to the practice needed. Equally no one forces anyone to learn or master these things, they are but a tool in a much larger tool box - neutral, timing, choice of attacks within context, Yomi... the list goes on - and more often than not there are characters in rosters that accommodate for people with less input skill.
      I don't think you realise this, but when you call people gatekeepers, you are doing what you think they are doing to you - you are discrediting their experience and opinion by putting them in a box. I'm not discrediting your take btw here, just advising you that neither answer is right IMO. Not all games are made for everybody and more often than not, your character isn't always the one you immediately liked the look of. And if you're of the camp of "I paid my money the game should be what I want" Then I'm gonna have to say you're wrong. Games are built around creator vision and if they weren't we would never have got games like Fighters Destiny.
      No hate my guy, but your take isn't one I subscribe to.

    • @4llg00dth1ng5
      @4llg00dth1ng5 20 днів тому +1

      @@2thre3 We have the technology now to do seamless input layering where you can option select, the timing and precision required to be successful along with complicated strings can still be quite present without the need for 720 inputs or 4264 inputs and the like. These longer command inputs served specifically and only the purpose of increasing the number of moves possible with a character despite limited button real-estate. 8 buttons isn't enough for any "standard" 2d-fighter, but the use of input layering wasn't really feasible at the time. Tekken 7 introduced the first input layering technique in a fighting game, and it was universally helpful for allowing new players the ability to have some level of consistency in their play. Imagine if we could make that system complex enough to actually allow the use of an entire moveset with simple one-direction command inputs on a layered control scheme. I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that it would increase the accessibility greatly and still allow for the full complexity desired for a fighting game. That being said, I'm a perpetual F8 in GGST and I'm certainly never going to be a top player in any fighting game. However, there are plenty of high-level players who make misinput mistakes in both ladder and competition matches. These mistakes are most often because certain tech is made ASTRONOMICALLY difficult to perform because of directional input. This is unequivocally a sign that the gameplay is actively limited by this industry standard which doesn't need to be present. Simple one-direction inputs with two or three layers of input could be enough for even a tekken character's entire moveset if you factor in 2-button inputs. There's not really a good reason why it has to be like this except to add a layer of difficulty and complication to being able to use the moves you want to in a match.

    • @2thre3
      @2thre3 19 днів тому +8

      @4llg00dth1ng5 - missinput is part of the game. I'd say it's a very important part of the game. It highlights the ability to perform under pressure.
      I'd also argue that specific inputs - KBD in Tekkens case, long strings in other games or any input - really, if you want to be technically minded about it, are always optional. Optimal, perhaps not - again, like a real fight optimal may come at a cost. Now, I agree and subscribe to the idea games should be fun and with all fighting games there is unranked online modes and you can always play against CPU and friends. The reality is that ranked and competitive play is a fight of sorts, its a battle of will power, a show of skill and shows the fruits of training. A simple argument would be say in Street fighter. There will be time where something as simple as down fierce uppercut will be more optimal than Shoryuken - but learning to time that Shoryu may lead to it being your turn for longer. The risk in taking longer for that input is a risk you take but are rewarded with a launcher. Now if both players have their last pip of health and one responds to the other with the opener for a 14 hit combo and drops it or a complex input that's on them - is this likely? Perhaps not but we both know we've seen stuff like that. Winning and styling on people are two different things in the same way choosing to reset neutral and hitting a launcher and comboing them to half health the start of a round on a jump in are. Even in that small interaction, there were other options - guarding and being in frame disadvantage was possibly one. Crossing under with forward dash is another. Back dash to make them whiff another. Down fierce AA? Standing jab AA?... the list is endless. It needs to be too. Hermogenising input takes away expression as over simplification turns the game it almost binary interactions as the "the answer" is always available. The answer isn't about availability it should be about context. When everything becomes about optimal flow charts, then even that thing of being optimal should have cost. You should have to remember 20 inputs in single case because the 19th could be contextual and leads to a different combo route for niche situation and is optimal - that requires dedication, knowledge, and skill. That isn't needed for casual play, but you might need it to show knowledge gaps in competitive. A player that studies the game has time to remember most of the roster, but to remember everything on every character is insane it shows commitment to training as does knowing every contextual use of an input. As does the execution to achieve it. It should have rewards. Hermogenisation leads to less interactions, meaning less chance of risk/reward. Less room for error only shows an unwillingness to take risks and there should also always be a risk.
      Comp should always have larger chances for errors. As a competitive player you are putting yourself out there showcasing your dedication to being the best. Can being the best require less inputs? Sure. But there's games for that and their player bases ain't massive. "Dive kick" was a brilliant example of hype in fighting games with minimal input - but I don't remember Dive kick making main stage Sunday finals at Evo. Sure that's extreme as examples go, I get that but surely you can see what I'm saying.
      You have options. Taking away other people's because you dont like theirs shouldnt be one. If you don't like what they do, counter it. If you can't do what they do, that's on you. Asking for a crutch in removal of things to allow you to circumvent knowledge or execution gaps is not okay. It's the metric we are measured on and we are all built differently- players like BrolyLegs showed that if you can't do something, you should do what you can instead. God rest that man.
      Now if its sheer complaint or unwillingness- then maybe you just aren't cut out to be the best in that particular game. But that's okay, number one is number one for a reason and we aren't all meant to be number one. Where you think you SHOULD be is always higher but where you are is always a representation of your ability to work for it.

      @@Iam-zs9cn I'm guessing you probably know this but Street Fighter 6 added a modern mode for each character that replaces motion inputs for special moves with single button presses. This game inspired some of my OCs in my original fiction stories (one being a direct shout-out to Meiling, my fave character, another basically being a rework of Ryuji that used flame powers like his home stage was depicted here), and I still revisit this game to this day. It's the very definition of a diamond in the rough for those that actually gave it the time of day. Sure the designs are generic even from back in the 90s but to me they still had a tiny bit of charm to them, and the game will forever be unique for playing like a fighting competition rather than an anime brawl like most fighters. And, most of all, it's a fun game. Sure it wasn't going to be getting any tournament spots but who cares? I just admire unique ideas especially nowadays. Will always play and love Fighters Destiny. Also found out about Toy Fighter eons later and also enjoy the heck out of that game too now that I have the rom for it.

Summer was approaching and exams were done so we had a few weeks playing N64 in our form room and by the end. The matches felt really intense because of how quickly a round could end and also because of the risks you could take to get more points. Punishing a high risk gambit was sooo satisfying.
    I went to watch Sumo in Japan a couple years back, and the intensity of the short rounds on those matches kind of reminded me of the adrenaline I felt in Fighters Destiny.

    man... this game was one of the 3 games i had in my nintendo 64 (was my first game console) so this game carries huge amounts of nostalgia for me and i played it a lot, even becoming an invincible god and unlocking all of the secret characters without even knowing how to do that. This video unlocked this memory. Thank you for that

Ninja has always been my guy and Joker has been engraved in my head since my childhood; I love that crazy fuck so much.

    I don't quite remember how i came across this game, other than it must have been an issue of Nintendo Power or something, but I always kept it in my mind as a really unique and interesting take on a fighting game, as well as feeling that if someone made a spiritual successor (or the longshot of an actual legitimate sequel) it could really take off as like one of the cult fighters, you know, the games that have a small but incredibly dedicated community. I'm thinking Melty Blood and how those dudes will set up and play anywhere if it means they get some time in.
    Excellent video by the way! Very well done and in-depth.
