I know that the review is focused on the game and not the characters, but there are two things I love to mention:
- Super 8 (the Octopus) is piloted by Devilotte and her two minions. AKA Capcom's Team Rocket trio. These morons (especially her) are beloved to this day in japan, from their weird design to their schemes always backfiring to their theme song being an "EVIL" take on super sentai like riffs. Speaking of music...
- The OST and sound design are excellent: the announcer is one of my favourites in all of fighting games, the attacks sound good to land or block, and the music is aces: If you fell in love with the early versus games OSTs, this is really made for you. Secret HQ and Colonial Satellite are my personnal favs.
And you also have JoJo character
Respect. My favorite tracks are the Helion Theme, Colonial Satellite, and Super 8. Staff Roll theme as an honorable mention.
Devilotte was also a solo unit in Project X Zone on the 3DS. Was weird seeing this blonde snooty girl in a NxC type of game, but then I have seen Blodia's arm at the end of her support usage, and then it clicked where she came from.

Wicked lad
So funny thing about there not being much games like it, the early Touhou fighting games have cited influence from Cyberbots in particular for how character movement and resource management works in those games. Heck by Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and its later expansion in Hisoutensoku (call it Soku for short) they go in on characters having 8 way dashes (bar one) and having really strong defensive play with mechanics unique to the games like grazing bullets and customising your super meter to have a myriad of options that aren't just supers.
Heck even early on characters in the game had moves that homaged the mechs in Cyberbots. Off the top of my head characters like Reimu have Fordy's flip kick (tho it's also a call to the first Touhou game) and Utsuho has a mix of Warlock and other mechs referenced in her move pull (in tier lists she's low mid-ish tier tho despite that her only war crime is crapping out damage).
For more traditional fighting game players it definitely takes a bit to get used to much like Cyberbots, but I think that's a testament to how people do like these kinds of fighters. Even if mechs aren't the primary face.

One Must Fall 2097 was great! It was multiplayer, had some RPG elements as you could pick the pilot + the mech. The pilot determined the stats (speed, endurance, etc) and the mech determined the moves. It also had campaign mode where you could buy/sell the mech and upgrade parts

I remember this. It was released in the mid 90s, right at a time when Capcom was experimenting a lot of things and concepts with Fighting Games. That era brought us things like this game, or Darkstalkers, or the Megaman vs fighting games.

My first experience with Cyberbots was not Jin in MVC 1/2, it was Deviluke friendly firing herself with Blodia Punch at the end of her assist attack in Project X Zone. Granted, this is a DIRECT parody of Jin in MvC 1&2, but that’s besides the point.

Years and years ago, a game called Cyborg Justice also had arm, weapon and leg replacement mechanics - often by ripping, drilling or sawing them off your opponents first.
Devilotte was how I found out about this game. I saw her in Super Puzzle Fighter and had to ask around a lot (this was before the internet was a widespread thing) to learn about this game. I'm glad she still shows up from time to time and Capcom hasn't totally abandoned the characters from this game.

I love Cyberbots, particularly because of it's strangeness. I was such a Capcom junkie back in the day that my first introduction to the game actually wasn't Jin's appearance in MVC2, but I wasn't able to get my hands on it to play until after that game so I was kinda surprised Blodia didn't play anything like Jin haha. I was a big fan of Armored Warriors so it was on my radar mostly because of that. Also worth mentioning that Super-8's pilot Devilotte has shown up in several other Capcom games, and was a secret character in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.
HOLY CRAP the nostalgia hit me like a truck from an Isekai anime. I used to play this a lot in my cousin's computer that had a Final Burn Alpha emulator. I wasn't always a fan of mecha stuff but Cyberbots kinda made me more open to them since I loved their mech designs so much. Guldin was always my favorite, I love my mechas big and heavy xD

I played both armored warriors and cyberbots as a kid on my uncle's consoles. Best memories ever
Rock Em Sock Em Robots Arena did a similar thing with interchangeable legs and arms, except you could freely change parts between the different characters, bringing entire parts of their movesets with them.
I love this game and the beatem up it came from, Armored Warriors. It's basically an Armored Core style beatem up where you can rip off parts from enemies and make builds in real time.
