I used to own the 27' version and my son and I spend quite a few summers cruising around B.C. We have many good memories. The build quality of the Ranger Tug was mixed. They did an admirable job of maximizing space use. The seats are uncomfortable for long term use. There is no vent for the stove/oven and it could get a bit smokey in the cabin. We had the optional diesel heater and it did a great job of keeping us warm on some cool and damp nights. What we did discover, by experience, was that the heater used the same fuel tank as the engine. As the engine used electronic fuel flow to calculate fuel consumption and remaining fuel it would reduce available fuel reserve without telling us. We actually ran out of fuel on our way into Comox. Luckily we has a spare can of diesel. The inverter had to be replaced three times. The fuse for the front thruster was the same as for the windlass and would blow. Took them some time to figure that out. The radar dome assembly had to be replaced. The thrusters are good enough in relatively calm conditions. The Volvo engine control harness was not the correct one resulting in errors. They could not find a correct harness and ended up splicing cables to make it work. When you are on holidays you really don't want to spend time in the shop fixing things like this on a new boat. Seaworthiness? I caution anyone going into heavy seas. The bow is not friendly to oncoming waves resulting in very uncomfortable slamming into the waves. We had to slow down to sub 5 Kt speeds. The boat also rolls a lot. To the extent that the kitchen cupboard doors would fly open and spill the contents. Finally, after a service the technician forgot to tighten the oil cap resulting in quite a mess. Engine instrument warned us of low oil!

Thanks for the advise , I did see a few video's on the hull thickness that were not encouraging . Have you seen a Helmsman 31 ? Iv'e been wondering about the Helmsman 31 . A bit wider , a bit more towards displacement on the spectrum of semi-displacement than the R31 ,still trailerable with the right permit and tow vehicle where I live . Seperate head and shower . It's a dated design by comparison but from afar it seems to be a bit more robust maybe .

Thank you for your well done video! I recently took delivery of my new Ranger R-31 CB and absolutely love her. Downsizing from a larger vessel is never easy but my Ranger R-31 provided all the amenities and than some that I was accustomed to. She is a quality build that is like a Swiss Army Knife with regard to the use of space and functionality. She is economical at displacement speeds but fast when she needs to be. Normally, I wouldn't even look at a boat this small. However, despite its size, it has a lot of features that make it 'livable'. Not that I'd use it for live-aboard, it would be perfect for weekends in tight passages, like some of the waterways in Florida. Being trailerable certainly is a plus for that!

No washing machine so on the Great Loop you'd have to use laundromats in towns. Didn't see a water maker (just have to drink beer and wine, I guess) Looks like a very easy boat to maneuver in tight spaces like canal locks. If you dock in a marina that charges by the foot you're saving money. Easy to single hand probably.

It is a SMALL, legally trailerable boat with a very clever layout that adds a feeling of SPACE where none exists. At 75, I'm a decade long RV live aboard guy and I'm looking to return to the water - having spent over twenty years afloat. To me, this is a PERFECT single person live aboard - it's about multiple spaces rather than one cavernous salon, as variety is the spice of life. Thanks "you two" for yet another enjoyable and informative tour.

That has to be the damn coolest 31' boat I've ever seen. And it sleeps 4 people! That's amazing.and you can do 720 miles at displacement speeds! That's almost enough to do the Great Loop and not have to stop but like 10 or 12 times for fuel.. But I'm sure you wouldn't cruise it at 7 knots the whole time. I think the Hardy, Great Banks, Fleming and Nordhavns are the most popular that do the Great Loop, probably a few others I know I'm forgetting for sure, but this is way less and just as capable.

The maximum legal width of a trailer on a road is 8.5 feet in USA and Canada. This is for hooking up and driving anywhere and anytime you want. This boat is trailerable but is considered a wide load and you have to buy a special permit every time you move it.

19 feet at mile marker 300 give or take. There may be a more circuitous route to avoid the low bridge problems. You can't rush the trip and one and a half to two years would be the time budget, especially if you do the St. Lawrence route. I recommend the St. Lawrence as you get to visit Quebec (kinda France) and St. Pierre (actually France). The Northern parts of the loop freezes in Winter so careful planning is important.

Talk about an amazing little live aboard and with it's range there's no reason I can see you couldn't head out from Florida to spend some time in the Bahamas. What a truly spectacular little vessel that's well appointed and a proven hull design that if you were dumb enough to get caught in bad weather would get you safely through it. The reason I say dumb enough is not meant as an insult it's because with today's weather predictions and the ability to know what's coming there's no reason to get caught in it barring some sort of failure or other circumstance. The thing is she's also more than fast enough to outrun anything you failed to see coming, well almost anything. This would be a dream vessel for me and the fact you can trailer it means no haul out fees or storage fees if you have a property to take her to. Also on the comment about using an RV Garage seeing as how when folded down she's only 10'3" tall there'd be no issues with that and you can easily take her down most major highways/interstates as when folded her clearance is below that of a Tractor Trailer/Big Rig. Now to win the lottery or have some stocks actually pay off and away I'd go...

The oversize road permit to trailer this craft can be quite an adventure in some states. Escort vehicles, designated routes, avoiding low bridges, daylight hours, and dry road conditions only travel is the challenge. The fees are usually nominal and a CDL may or may not be required depending on tow vehicles weight with everything loaded up for an excursion. Be safe.

First time viewer....blown away by the narrative combo. The lady is, as the Jackie Wilson song went, "Reet Petite!" An adorable ball of energy, and you both are like Kids in the candy shop.
Now me...I'm 6' 2", weigh about 250....what kind of chance would I have on such a stunning yet Smaller tug like this one? 31' sounds like it'd cramp me! 😕

I looked at their website and I have to say the 31 is totally the way to go. I thought the 43 would be better but the interior is like so many other yachts today. I love the coziness the use of wood in their other models brings to the interior. The 43 has too much white and feels to clinical and clean. Although I love the way the sleeping quarters look on the 43 i'd rather have the 31 you showed here.
Of course I could never afford the 43 and would have to sell my house and move into the 31.................shit I could that.

You might take a peek at the Cutwater line, I THINK they're the same parent company as Ranger. They're more of a fishing boat than a tug but have very similar features for a given size.

The Cutwater is a nice boat. I got the chance to climb around one when I was at the NY boat show...oh, it was probably 4 or 5 years ago now. I think I prefer the tug as you get a bit more boat, and I think the hull shape is a bit more capable. That said, the Cutwater is still a lot of boat for its size too. ...weird... I never thought I would be discussing a boat I had set foot on in real life on a channel like this... Follow your dreams, kids! lol Another funny observation - there is definitely a "law of diminishing returns" with these things. A 50' foot boat isn't always better than a 31'. Personally. I was rather unimpressed with a...I think it was a Princess? 1.3 mil at the time. Fit and finish wasn't quite as good as the humble Ranger Tug, and you really didn't get all that much more boat for paying that hefty premium.

Awesome boats. The Honda Civic of the Puget Sound. Seriously, they are everywhere in the Seattle area. Love the more down to earth boats. The big stuff is cool but they represent a small portion vs what us "normal" folks can aspire to.

Another brand in the sub 35 foot range I'd like to see is the Nordic 34 (or any of their models). Another cruiser I'd also like to see is the Aspen C108. Any boat that can run the loop and cruise the Caribbean and NA Coastlines is pretty ideal imo.
