- The fastest hour of the entire Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard weekend is the Timed Shootout on Sunday afternoon. This is when the very fastest cars and drivers at the event hurl their various machines up the hill in the hope of being crowned the champion for that year.
As ever the shootout was filled with incredible cars and names, from WRC rally-winning cars to Le Mans winners and even the very latest track special cars from both McLaren and Hoonigan's world of Gymkhana.
Who would come out on top? You'll have to watch to find out, but our main question is whether this was the most exciting shootout ever?

Rob Bell's run in the Mclaren was pure precision. The mirror was taking straw off the hay-bales.
He was the only one who absolutely had dedication through that chicane

The fact a road-based car in the R32 Skyline beat a purpose made race car of the Sauber-Mercedes C9 from the same era is unbelievable, no wonder those Skyline's have such a huge reputation

even today the R32 deserves the Godzilla title
Don't forget the c9 is a much bigger car with a much bigger footprint more suited to long flowing bends. I couldn't believe how quick the mini was to say of how down on power it is
You have to bear in mind that the C9 is purpose built to use downforce on a smooth track. This hill climb put the car out of its element so it wasnt able to come close to it's full potential
Not to take away from R32, but it was in it's own element. While C9 was like fish out of the water. That course is nowhere near fast enough to take full advantage of that car. Wasn't really made for very narrow, tight, twisty road. But for massively wide race track, with long corners.

Wrestles this scary monster car all the way up the hill, squirming and sliding, then says “the McLaren was so nice to drive, an absolute pleasure”. Brilliant
It looked like a handful in the bumps but he had the confidence in the car to put it 3 inches off the bales at the top of the hill. Epic drive
He had trouble concentrating on what to say while Travis is in the background idling.
Travis is a humble guy. He was driving the wheels off that thing. Maybe lost too much through the flint wall I think
That was the quickest four wheel drift by the flint wall. He lost time but looked spectacular.

That R32 holding its own in there. Its only a bit slower than a 992 GT3 Cup. Can you imagine the impact that car made 30 years ago?
Wiped the floor in oz,ford and holden just couldn't come near em.
Well that particular R32 has over 1000hp, on a course that favour cars with big acceleration. 1000hp and 4WD vs 500hp and RWD. Yes the cup car is newer, has a DCT, a bit of aero and modern tires (although not slicks btw), it’s still 500hp down and it’s only going to the rears

I'm a Subaru fan, but that Porsche 911 gt3 was definitely my favorite. 911 gt3 looks really beautiful for a race car, and it was fast.
a damn GT3+++++++xtreme no rules bonkers full dive racecar no less. Absolutely mind boggling that the WRC STI almost beat it. I'd like to see how fast Travis would be in that 720s GT3X

Jake Hill's does amazing things with that Nissan. By far the fastest car with NO ground effect aerodynamics.
Basically every car here doesn't have any ground effect. Downforce and ground effect are different
@@How23497 All the formula cars from 70's and later have ground effect so do most of the endurance racers and modern rally cars. The ducted F1 car and skirted Lotus F1 cars that caused the rules to change, all have raced at FOS.
@@MtnMig Nope. NONE of the f1 cars here have ground effects. The only cars here that used them are the last two and the legendary group c cars. The cars you mentioned arent in this video. So no, all f1 cars from 1983 and later DONT have ground effects, same as all the modern lmp cars and modern rally cars.

My favorite was the Indy roadster at 11:24 . Who the thought a 1950's Indycar made for Indianapolis with a two speed gearbox, would make such a solid hillclimb car? Bobby Unser would be proud.

Those cars on a road course are some of the best things you can watch. They were never meant to do what they can do at places like Road America, Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, etc., yet each year it's some of the most fun you can have watching a race.

I'm not a NASCAR person myself. But a huge boat of a car designed to just go in circles had got to be a handful at low speed corners.

I love that the 60hp mercedes was the first car in the video. I loved it. I had this in the background for a get-together and instead of conversation this video grabbed everyone's attention. Had so much fun watching this.
That R32! Damn! Godzilla still has it even 30 years later! To beat the 30 years newer touring cars is one thing but to beat that Sauber by over 3 seconds and an M1 Procar by over 5 seconds... Incredible machine!
The Sauber driver was keeping it safe, the proof is the Spice being faster in a wetter track. The Procar could be aceptable fact...in a real circuit the Sauber would be running circles around your beloved skyline. Go back to F&F...

I found it interesting a lot of cars go slower at the end of the circuit compared to the middle sector. I think I'm most impressed by the Mclaren's 155.3.

the mini set up and handling was incredible. Much more impressive than any other car there. Those hops under load usually only happen in karts which have incredible cornering ability.

It's probably set up as best as it gets, it's built to be fast doing at least 100km/h more through every turn...

And thankfully the engine didn't break like the last time it was there. I remember the whole struggle to swap the engine using V8 taken from caravan overnight just to keep it running.

That subie took the cake. There was so much intensify in Travis’ driving, and you could see him wrestle with the beast through the turn to the flint wall
This kind of event is lovely, but there's a problem when some of the drivers don't try to push their cars to the limit since they know how much the cars value now. We might not know the full potential of those cars, such as the Tyrrell 012 (since the driver's pretty much keeping it safe throughout the course).

The Mercedes 60HP was phenomenal! I'm sure a lot of effort went into this motorcar! Incredible! Props to George Wingard! Just a fantastic outing! I hope there will be footage for next year's! I feel like I have been there before. I had the Polyphony Digital Gran Turismo Sport for the PS4 and got to 'drive' the Goodwood course and know what the drivers are going through. Just fantastic video! Thank you so much for your effort!

The P1 LM, which is road legal, was faster than all of these cars minus the last 2 when it ran a few years ago.
