- The Timed Shootout at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is the perfect way to see your favourite machines at their very best. Over the years we've seen some wild and entertaining runs, but today we're concentrating on the absolute fastest. Seeing as the official record wasn't broken for 23 years, there are some older runs in this video you may not have seen.

At those speeds they all require lots of skill.... Each car would have its own idiosyncrasies so you can't really pick one over the others in my opinion
All *non-asthma-sounding* vehicles took the most skill.
Love how the marshal at the start line for the McMurty jumps and then shrugs as if to say, "where's it gone??"
I see that too, standing next to the fastest cars on the planet all day and when that thing takes off he acts like it's a magic trick.

@@Dakkyun Even with a keyboard, it is very tough to drive in games like in Assetto Corsa.
That really is one in a million lap by Heidfeld given how much the car was moving.
@@ooleeeo the biggest issue was the setup, he was struggling to keep in on the road, if it was done better, or give it a few years and use the 2005 mclaren it would demolish everything else, irl I would hedge a bet that if the driver tried hard enough even with the surface they'd be able to get sub 35

The N H run in the McLaren is still my favourite, you can see the bumpy tracks makes it a real handful for him. Amazing drive 👌👌
That car was not set up correctly, MCL was lucky that Nick Le Fritz didn't crash it.

I was just about to write this, we can clearly see that He was struggling to stay on the tarmac.
@@jareknowak8712 yeah, he also had a big lift on that last slight corner which even in a gt car is flat, the car needed softened and rasied a bit for sure

I guess you didn't feel sky high then, because F1 cars didn't hit 20k until mid 2000s. Late 90s had to accept a measly 17k

But still it sounds like an excuse to save the internal combustion engines times at FOS, being anihilated by EVs, and the quickest still a prototype

I definitely don't have the nuts to be driving the McMurtry at the stonewall that fast. One of the few vehicles to convey speed via video, can only imagine what it feels like.
At least it sounds cool - the fan is like a rocket going past. Other EVs just whine. Whining is never aurally pleasing.
It's probably not as hard to drive as something with winged down force. The whole concept of the faster you go the more grip you have is such a hard skill to master.
@@Underpantsniper bold statement... no matter what the method of producing downforce is, when you enter a corner you will feel the Gs regardless.
I love how quiet the Nio is.
Even compared to the other EVs, this thing was completely silent and yet so fast.
I love it. Silent but deadly.
Honestly I think that's a cool thing about EVs rather than a drawback. Like sure they're not as loud and exciting, but all that power just being SILENT is a cool thing in itself.

@@not_even_me5035the BRZ was a taste of whats to come. Tiny 2.0 liter that when youre sideways the tires are always louder than the stock exhaust
@@JamesLikesCoffeeI personally don’t like the formula e noise but it is just that it sounds too high pitched. That is just a personal preference. I like wec and IMSA sounds better than NASCAR and f1. Though the reason I’m not a big fan of formula e is that the cars are supposed to be identical but there is obviously a performance gap in the cars, and there are a lot of other things in the rules that I don’t like. Still, it is fairly entertaining to watch once in a while.
The NIO EP9 sounded like it was breaking the sound barrier towards the end of the run 🤣
I find the noises some of these EV's put out, are really quite surprising.
Some are way more visceral than expected, which is great for us car nerds.
But the sound of a Tesla tyres seemingly being easily able to drown out a petrol engine Suzuki Swift altogether around town, kind of rubs me the wrong way too.
They sound like tinnitus with the way the gearing works in them. The mcmurty sounds wacky just because the fans are going nuts keeping it glued to the road
Its not the same sound, but it reminds me of lightsabers or a (literal) bullet passing by.
That dudes reaction to the mcmurtry launch is hilarious. And he has seen some fast cars.

Normally I'd hate on electric cars, but it's the festival of SPEED, not the festival of SOUND...The NIO more than deserves that spot, it was a phenomenal run

Nothing beats the sound of that Jag. Absolutely euphoric sound with all those crackles and bangs in addition to the engine revs. Mega!
The McLaren F1 car was my favorite speed run of all time. I mean, that V10 just screams! I miss that sound.
The Speirling one was the most unique. The fan that helps keep the car planted to the ground sounds like a jet going by.
Its a 6 liter V12, but I agree 100%! It sounds better than most of the lineup. The new McLaren is pretty sweet too.

Y'know what, that EP9 is amazing for how quiet it is! Not a sound whatsoever! I'm all for the noise and fun but that stealthiness is worthy of respect!
The first time I saw the McMurtry run I thought the video was sped up. Amazing times we are living in.
The McMurtry batmobile makes every other hypercar look like a minivan.
So epic, my fav is the Jag run. Insane skills go's to Reid. Are you kidding me go's to "Quick Nick" and McMurtry Speirling+Max.

Many people didn't understand why the ID-R was so much faster the next time round. Apparently they made the battery smaller, since it's a short run anyways. This increased the power to weight drastically and they put together a great run to beat the old F1 car.
Also better suspension settings it seems. First run it bounces around alot.
And another wing spec, with less downforce.
That Jag really illustrates how narrow the course is . . .

I really love that ID.R, it looks gorgeous, it's fast, the color scheme is great and it sounds like a swarm of angry hornets. I wish VW, considering their close partnership with Rimac through their other brands Bugatti and Porsche, would make a streetcar based on the design. The MP4/13 was neat as well. As for the Spierling, it looks like a cartoony Batmobile and it definitely has that pace too, unreal.
looking at the Spierling it looks like a joke almost but then is just comically fast. That thing is an absoloute rocket.
Hoping I can see someone matching that last year's record, would be insane! 😁
Need to have the same footprint, acceleration and power-to-weight, then. The McMurtry's size gives it way more room to chase apexes.
@@closedcl8yeah, he basically drove a straight line at the flint wall section... Pretty unfair advantage if you ask me... The other cars are four times bigger and heavier

I would not advise it. If they keep pushing further and further, one day it may result in a terrible accident.
That was already pretty close to what’s possible and given the tracks relatively simple safety measures they are really pushing their luck by now. Personally I enjoyed the petrol powered cars in these top10 more anyway, even if they were a bit slower.
Every now and the I come here and I close my eyes and I listen to that Häkkinen/Coulthard McLaren and instantly get my mind filled with memories from my childhood.

Epic video, thanks! Acknowledging what a time of transition we're in as the McMurty takes the prize. And yet how could I ever forget (or forgoe) those 90's F1 cars and all they represent. They'll be distantly remembered museum pieces soon enough.
Seems a bit weird that F1 cars aren't allowed to do timed runs, but even faster cars are ..
Not sure if they aren't allowed (Hiedfield did after all) but if a modern F1 car did the run, not only would it probably win but would kinda ruin the point of the timed runs dont you think?

I LOVE how the camera men do NOT ZOOM on the cars as they are driving away!!! It lets you see the speed!!!! This is something that F1 camera men are horrible at. F1 broadcasts are terrible.
I mean, I get it because of all the sponsorship thing, blah, blah, but they are just AWFUL.

I am NOT an EV fan by any stretch of the imagination but that McMurty is just insane up that hill i wonder if it has the battery life for pikes peak it would be stunning there especially if it set a new record .
I believe they are preparing it for pikes peak. It would most certainly set a record there. It is so ridiculous with its grip and acceleration it looks unreal. Almost like you are watching a arcade style racing game.
Mercedes McLaren F1 car was an incredibly voracious and edgy animal on that run. I wanted to keep its powerful wild engine note in my head until the end of time, it was absolutely gorgeous ⚡️
Scares me to think the McMurtry hit its top speed of 150 multiple times on the course . Prob could’ve run far faster .😊

At first I thought listening to those electric cars that they are awfull, but that Mcmurty. It kind a reminded of me what it must be felt when Jet engines were introduced in aviation.

Also I was expecting this list to be dominated by Duracell Bunnies so nice to see combustion engines (old ones at that) still sticking it to the new kids.
It's quite incredible how electric cars are taking over... this list has 3 years with electric cars vs 26 with solely combustion engines

That massive wing on the little Peugeot is almost comical.
Those Pikes Peak cars are nuts. The thing is effectively a purpose built hillclimb machine with a Peugeot shell slapped on top, and yeah that wing looks goofy but it totally needs it.

This concept is so pure, this event and the Top Gear "Star in a reasonably priced car:" concept. I don't know why there isn't a series of major events based on one or both of these concepts. I mean I know there are some events, but I'm talking F1 or NASCAR level. Maybe once a month, at different tracks, one lap of truth, best car and/or best driver takes the honours. I'd watch it.
Way too risky for those famous drivers to do every month lol Insurance nightmare🤣
Still, most weekends we have motorcycle road racing.. Street Circuits for cars, Hill Climbs events going on from amateur to pro level. That should scratch the same itch for most people.

The Ford Cosworth DFV engine was very reliable at the time and the British team’s single-seat car took full advantage of the ground effect. The FW07 model competed for three consecutive seasons in the World Championships of 1979, 1980 and 1981. In the FW07B the two fins on the side bellies were removed, in front of the rear wheels present in the previous year’s version. Carlos Reutemann with Williams - Ford Cosworth FW07B n.28 finished third in the Formula 1 World Champion 1980 with one victory in season. The Argentine driver obtained the best result in the Grand Prix of Monaco at Montecarlo circuit with a first place in addition to seven podium in season. With the team mate Alan Jones the Williams team obtained the first place in the constructors’ championship. The championship was won by the William FW07B of Alan Jones.

I hope that we eventually get the Volkswagen Motorsport I.D R and the McMurtry Spéirling in "Forza Horizon 5". The VW I.D R was my favorite car in "Forza Horizon 4".

Graeme Wight Jr’s 2003 run was incredible, we need another more modern British Hillclimb car to come and improve on that, like Alex Summers or something. Could be a serious contender for top spot

Hopefully more advancements into hydrogen hybrids. Ev's are already at their peak and now reliant on ever dimishing returns on battery tech until we somehow manage to break through that next tech wall.

The sound of of McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 is so amazing!!! EVs are just the acceleration. Passion is in gasoline cars. I will be miss them.
