    It should be mentioned that bmw did not put the timing and oil pump chains in the back close to the flywheel to annoy owners, but to get rid of harmonic issues with the long crankshaft, which should help the engine live longer at high rpm

    Going B58 after 15 yrs of unboosted V8's, it takes some time to get used to driving with a sea of torque in low RPMs. I still don't like it ocmpared to naturally aspirated engines, but it makes for a pleasant flexible engine with - indeed - excellent MPG for its HP output. I essentially went from 18.8-23.5 mpg with the N62 V8 (4.4l) to 23.5-30 mpg with the B58 (not the TU1). Not the V8 sound I was used to but in sport modus it makes a decent soundtrack.

    Besides the shortcomings of the location of the cam timing and oil pump chains, the plastic parts breaking down with time, and no port injection to maintain clean intake ports, the B58 is an engine with very high tuning potential.
    Regular oil changes will greatly reduce chances of VANOS and Valvetronic failure, and a catchcan will mitigate intake port carbon buildup.

      @Automobile Addict, there are far more worse European engines. No engine is perfect. Objectively, many engines from many manufacturer come close to perfect. Which has their fans. Even those considered "unreliable" by many are seen as challenges to improve them by many. Take the Subaru boxer and Mazda Wankel, for example.

  • @porschelover04
    @porschelover04 2 роки тому +5

    Glad to see you cover this engine! It's an absolute gem, even when paired to a 6-speed like my 240
    Quick thing to be noted: the original build B58 had the 6-exhaust port head (I could literally take a picture of my engine bay to prove this.) TŪ1 brought the headers-in-block arrangement, for efficiency. The engine warms up quicker when the exhaust gasses are heating up the head, improving cold-start emissions. ~The compression ratio is unchanged as well, still 11.0:1. 10.2:1 is the N55 ratio.~
    EDIT: I was half-wrong about compression ratio; B58B30M1 (335hp TÜ, as found in 540i, 740i etc) remain 11.0:1, while B58B30O1 (382hp TÜ found in M340i, M440i etc.) have dropped down to 10.2:1.

    Time will tell on reliability of these. In the UK they are much rarer than the 4 cylinder petrol and Diesel BMW engines and they tend to cover less miles. What I will say though is that a few have had broken pistons, injector failures and scored bores. They seem reliable in most cases but may not be as bulletproof as many people think. The official long service intervals, single row timing chain and the fact it is mounted at the back of the engine are not a great combination either and that setup has caused issues in the past. Mine is on 53k and going strong but does have the occasional tick and rattles which come and go.

      @Josh-qm4rb 2 роки тому +7

      No the B58 is incredibly reliable, one of the only problems is the timing chain placement (not affecting reliability but is tricky to repair) and carbon build up over long periods of time, but there are many solutions to clean the engine. An example of an unreliable BMW is the N54. The N54 itself is a brilliant engine, but the auxiliary parts such as the high pressure fuel pump let it down. Replacing all these faulty parts will make an N54 very reliable.
      Other unreliable BMWs include the N47, early N20s, and the N62/N63. These are naturally unreliable engines.

      @@VisioRacer Papadakis Racing has a full teardown video of the engine. The can wheels are at the back of the engine, which makes the simple task of changing camshafts very complicated requiring engine removal just to get better camshafts. The variable lift system is very complicated to remove.
      The intake manifold is PLASTIC. The oil filter housing is PLASTIC. The thermostat housing is PLASTIC and computer controlled for no reason, overcomplicating a proven system with electronic control. Also, if you desire to have a normal thermostat system, the computer in the car will not allow the far to function due to the computer controlled thermostat. The valve cover is PLASTIC. All that plastic around heat and pressure is asking for fatigue and deformation causing leaks and poor sealing, asking for low oil pressure, not something I want for a 80k dollar Supra.
      The internal exhaust manifold eliminated the possibility for exhaust porting for better power. The engine does not fit on a basic engine stand that can hold 99% of all engines making it a neusance to work on even outside of the car.
      Spark plug holes are very very small, making replacement another neusance. The connecting rod caps are cracked for a more exact fit on the crank, which in my opinion is less accurate than a simple ground or machined finish on the rod caps.
      The cylinder head has a very high part count in order to achieve the variable valve lift, much more complicated system than the 2JZ as well with a direct cam on shimmed bucket system instead of the finger follower system. When Papadakis rebuilt the B58 for high power, the intake manifold was changed to aluminum for better strength, so the argument of plastic used as stock for better weight holds no value.
      Let me know if you have any questions.

    If you notice there has been a huge push for 340i from the f30 generation and these motors do produce more power than the n20 or N26 but are prone to some very similar malfunctions, especially rod knocking. I heard BMW is pushing influencers to promote these for viewers buy old stocks to get them moving faster.

      @CadexLaw 2 роки тому +2

      This is not true in any way shape or form. The f30 generation has been out of production for several years now, there’s no remaining stock and hasn’t been for some time. As someone who works as a tech in a BMW dealership I’d love to see where these B58s with rod knocking are because I have yet to see a single one with this issue since this engine was released, and I typically see a dozen of these engines a day.

      @@taylorparker8912 The N2x is fine if you can find a 1/2015 build date or later with the updated timing chain design or if you can find an earlier model that's already had the timing chain fix done at your local BMW dealership. Personally if you can afford it I would recommend stretching for a B48/B46 powered BMW as those generally have zero issues to begin with + BMW made the switch to silicone instead of normal gaskets in the Bx8 engines so gasket issues are significantly rarer, which was a common complaint with any N series engine especially as they aged.
