BTW, to anyone reading this who is messing around with knob-twiddling in order to develop presets from the existing ones (which can be fun, in my opinion), I recommend switching the Knob Mode (shown briefly at 24:24 in this video) to Smooth from the default, which is Jump. It reduces the harsh sounding and sudden changes when turning knobs that you don't know the initial position of. Coupled with the other menu option that allows the LED screen to show parameter values for every knob you turn as you turn them, you'll dial stuff in a LOT more easily. Happy synthesizing!
Andy Phelps Yes decentd tip, Not enough parameter values for sure on the screen. I tend to stare at the waveforms too much lol.
Thank God, I was wondering about the ability to show values when editing parameters. This is important. Thanks for the comment!
I do this but find catch setting to work better. This way the setting won’t change until you move past them with the control. You can essentially then dial in every setting using the show all parameter value change option. It’s long winded but it means you can recreate the knobs for the preset with the knob positions being true to the original
Where's smooth option? I only see Catch, Scale, and Jump
Hold the fort!!!! This is perhaps the most useful tip I have seen this year!!!! THANK YOU!!
BEST MINILOGUE XD INSTRUCTIONAL EVER. Korg should pay this guy! It's better than anything they put out. Even better than their manuals which always suck.
I swear to God, Korg has the worst manuals in the industry.
John Kavooras They pretty good for wallpaper or origami!
i bought me also on of these babys - and just looked the video - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!! thank you so much for sharing!!
Possibly even better than the good ol Daniel Fisher!!
@@johnnykavooras2954 Hahaha - I used to think that until I bought a Tascam dp-24sd. At best the instructions are confusing, but in some cases they are actually incorrect and give you the wrong information.
lol at 28:23
me, out loud, to myself: "wow that's cool"
him: "that's cool I hear you say"
me: 👀
lol
true.
Said it before but: Best synth reviews out there.
Tied for first with stimming
This guy is very skilled and incredibly clear with instruction and guidance, I cannot believe he isn't on the payroll with one of these major music instrument manufacturers.
The command and mastery he has over the technical aspects of these machines is quite extraordinary, and hes filling in excellently where many official factory instruction manuals fail miserably.
Thanks! I don't accept payment from companies (except review gear, which I rarely sell) but happy to make videos for people like you :)
If anyone else is wondering, the panel load function is now Shift + Write, not Shift + Play as indicated here / in the manual
Your videos have taught me sos much about synthesis! This is by far the most compete easy to grasp and detailed minilogue xd review. Thank you for al the great content, tips and tutorials.
My Minilogue XD just arrived. My first analog synth. Thank you for the in depth tutorial!
Nice first synth! Enjoy it.
Thoughts after two weeks? I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine :D
@@thestatpow5 ohh yes I enjoy it a lot :D even more than I expected. I've got some quite developed tunes already that are ready for mixdown in Ableton
Nice! Reminds me of when I got my Minilogue as my first synth around 3 years ago. I didn't play it super often around then but nowadays it definitely gets more use and appreciation from me. Glad to see you're enjoying yours.
This almost makes me want to sell mine for an xd, but there are some features I'll miss too much to just get rid of mine; for example, the ability to modulate the LFO with a dedicated ADSR envelope, and the Mono mode with a sub oscillator. Not to mention the slider being bigger and a bit more precise than on the xd.
But it does seem the pros of the xd outweigh the cons by far. I love that it has drive built in, a multi FX engine, xy modulation with the joystick, and the ability to invert the sawtooth LFO wave.
@@lyva Got any of your tunes online? I'm thinking of buying as well as first synth! :O
I KNOW I should have been holding Shift while doing everything possible on this the moment I got it... thank you for highlighting some of the cool extra functions.
what is better than watching a Loopop review and tutorial ? watching a Loopop review and tutorial with the actual synth in front of me. Thanks again sir, you really are brilliant !
Well that 40 minutes flew by! Thank you for the help!
THANK YOU....i just got one of these on a really good deal with no idea about synthesis and was feeling a little overwhelmed but you've taught me sooo much!
Thanks for not only showing us the basic capabilities of the XD, but the advanced features, and plug ins increase the capability of the XD beyond what I expected. The XD is a lot more than a 3 octave 4 voice synth players can use for fill-ins, leads and bass sounds. I doubt any of us will get bored with the XD.
Thanks so much for the in-depth how-too tutorial of a great sounding synth with plenty of bang for the buck!
Unbelievably thorough and level-headed review. Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this! I honestly feed a lot for comfortable otable and confident with my new XD! Thank you for taking the time to make this!
You opened up a whole new instrument for me. Thank you so much. Amazing video you have done.
Once again Ziv, you've out done yourself. Your tutorials make any synth easier to understand. I hope companies of the products you demo compensate you. Because of your tutorials I got my 0-Coast, 1010 synthbox, and my Neutron. And, you make it easier to understand the product. Far better than any manual could ever do. Thanks again.
Thanks so much Den - while I do often get gear sent or offered at a discount, I never do paid reviews - I know companies benefit (especially since I only spend time on things I think are interesting...), but I'd rather not have payment from companies as my "business model" to keep me focused on what viewers need to know...
The minilouge XD really surprised me. I had zero interest in it for a long time but when I went to the store to buy another synth I demoed one while I was waiting and I ended up walking out with both. It just sounds so good!
Yet another piece of kit bought after walking your videos... Digitakt, Microfreak, and now this! I love your channel, your reviews double as an awesome quick start guide for each unit. Thank you so much man, keep up the great work!
This video is underrated. It’s a lesson about synthesis. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
The patch ideas are all so wonderfully thoughtful, and explained more effectively than I would've thought possible.
Great work, as always.
Mine is on its way and I plan on watching this a few times as I learn synth basics. Thank you Loopop!
You truly do make the best overviews out there! Love these!
All I was hoping for. Great review as always, thanks!
This review really is excellent. I’m new to synths. Recently purchased an XD. The topics covered in this video will keep me busy for a LONG time.
I'm halfway through and this may be the best demo/tutorial I've ever see for any synth. I've read the whole manual and it's not my first rodeo with synthesis still learned things, not just about this synth, but synthesis in general--like how I never thought of an envelope as one time modulation, which is a good way to describe it. Awesome job!
Buncha typos...I was still watching lol
FYI many synths these days have continuous envelopes (looping) which can be clock synced or run free and have variations on the traditional 4 stage ADSR by adding additional stages.
Loopop Never disappoints. Your reviews are so informative, entertaining, and unbiased.
This convinced me to buy one. Cheers!
Stay safe everyone!
How do you like it? I’m considering it with my sub 25? I wanted just a couple of decent analog synths to go in my studio
Mind boogling for synth beginners. I think I will be watching this demonstration many times. Thank you 👍🙇♂️
Thanks a lot for all your gear reviews ; they are the best on UA-cam !
And thank you for the extended content
Best Minilogue XD Review I've seen, liked your sounds as well.
Regards
You made a big reference tutorial for this beautiful baby. Great man, thanks a lot
Cristal clear explanations. Thank you, great job man
Great and deep review. Happy owner of the XD!
Just bought one. I'm so hyped to play with it.
Thank you for finally answering clearly if the filter self oscillates. I have not seen anyone mention this yet so well done, phew finally! Great review as always
It's so strange how manufacturers and video creators rarely go over all the major features most people like to know about, which is why it's amazing that we have Loopop making content for synths. For example, I still don't even know how external MIDI sequencing works with the OP-Z (if there are dedicated MIDI sequencer channels or if it overdubs internal channels like the Circuit), or if the OP-1 can even sequence external gear at all. And I've searched quite extensively.
@@mikeexits We're quite fortunate to be able to really get our heads round a piece of gear before choosing to have it our studios, never played an OPz though, have fun!
Absolutely agree the most comprehensive and perfectly executed reviews always, 👍👍👍👍👍
I just love the way this synth looks for some reason
Same and the sound is amazing. Its all so well balanced. And not all that expensive either :o
Absolutely fantastic video as always dude. Thanks for taking the time! Only made me want an xd more if that was possible haha!
Just ordered up the XD! Thanks for the great vid! 👍
Watching this, considering the minilogue. Then the sequence comes on - immediately bought one.
What a review! 😲
Even if I don't speak (and understand) english perfectly, I've understood everything, this is so clearly explained !
Congrats and thanks a lot for this perfect review 👍👏
Thanks
Absolutely the best XD review EVER! Many thanks!!👍👍
yo that was so damn good. I've had this synth for a long time now, and this blew my mind and unlocked so many ways of doing things!
Great tutorials on the XD. I love this machine! 👍🏻
My xd should have arrived earlier this week, I think I'm just watching these videos to taunt myself😂.
Watched a lot of videos on this synth and this is by far the best, good work.
You make the best reviews!
What an awesome in depth but straight and easy to understand video! Thank you verry much!
- Just a quick shoutout to Ensoniq back in the day allowing third-party “WaveBoy” to create effects and filters for the EPS & ASR series of hardware.
I wish there was a synth that had custom filters and oscillators made in a language similar to PureData or Python so it would be more accessible
A digital hardware modular, like the Nord Modular G2 or the Arturia Origin, but open source and therefore expandable via third party modules (oscs, filters, modulators, effects etc.), this would be a dream coming true.
Thank you for another great overview - I was almost convinced to buy the DeepMind 12 until I watched this vid. I'm seriously considering buying the Korg now. Need to sleep on it!
My pleasure, and well, a Deepmind video is coming up... so.... hopefully that will help you decide one way or the other
Top notch video as always! Gee you make synthesis look soooo easy :) Great job and many thanks
This is the minilogue XD of channels. An instant classic.
Amazing demonstration! Very comprehensive. Now I finally understand the basics of what all these knobs and menus do. Thanks, loopop!!
Nice intro and tutorial - best on YT! Like the Ideas and Tricks section.
I have a Monologue... which might pair nicely with the XD Module 🤔
Thanks very much!
I have a Minilogue on its way to me right now. I feel pretty confident that I'll be consulting this video many times for the next couple of months hahaha
Extremely informative review. This would be a good synth for someone who is looking for a professional sounding 4 voice analog synth alternative to the $1,500-$2,500 more expensive equivalents. Or for someone who would like to add 4 analog hardware voices along side their DAW based plug ins for some hands on, immediately accessible parts. Consider the desktop module as well, it's great. Updated: Since my comment I purchased a second Minilogue XD thinking I had a faulty mod stick my store sent me another one. I hooked them up in Poly Chain mode and have 8 voices functioning as one unit. It's a great 8 voice VCO poly synth now. There are a couple of things that do not apply like the octave switch doesn't work in poly chain mode, neither does the mod stick up position. However Korg will likely update those in a future Firmware update so this is not a deal breaker. This synth sounds great in 8 voice poly chain mode.
I bet you could route that stuff by CV. I was also thinking, one could do more complex routing using the CV's on the back along with the menu.
Thank you!! so much better than any other reviews or instructions
!
In its price range, this synth seems to be simply brilliant and a HUGE BANG for the bucks! The feature-set falls not too far away from never-ending!!
Thanks! Very helpful with my XD. Download / purchased some of those addons.
Great review as always
About a year ago after watching this very video, I promptly purchased my very own XD. At that time I had it down to the XD or a Deepmind 12 -and the Deepmind was winning by a stretch. But after watching this "no stone unturned" look at the XD it convinced me to buy one. I have been a very happy XD user ever since. Ok, the Deepmind has much more polyphony and a trick or two going for it. But to me the awesome lush analog sound of the XD, not to mention the versatility of combining the digital oscillator and rich sounding FX section wins my heart and ears every time I play with it. Thank you Loopop for a great kitchen sink an'ol review. 10 out'a 10.
Hey Karl, if you want these patches : ua-cam.com/video/i2rq9cMMt2s/v-deo.html I can sell them for 5$
each time i see a new review i think the synths can't get better
Great Video! I ordered mine tonight. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Your Video made the wait longer. ;) So Excited! Subbed!
I've wanted this synth since it came out and it'll be here tomorrow... I can't wait 😆
Greeeeeat video ! Complet and very very inspering !!! Thanks a lot ! Long life to Loopop !!!
Thanks for the info!
Awesome youtube video, per usual, thank you! Waiting for the module version because I can't personally handle less than full sized keys.
"The saw tooth has 'this' happen to it' lmao, awesome :)
These videos are the best advertisements for the instruments you present. Sometimes you show me features which weren't really advertised by the original company and it really makes me consider buying one. Right now I'm considering whether to get one of the Behringer semi modulars (so i can start on modular synthesis), or to save my money and get this.
Excellent as always. Thank you.
Could say a lot more, but this covers it: "Thank you so much".
Some of the plugins for the digi oscillator sounds brilliant!
sorry, but this is only your opinion
@@frankschneider7190 you just stated your opinion
@@frankschneider7190 What the fuck kind of dumbass comment is this?
@@cometcourse381 lol So true!
Frank Schneider nice try, Roland.
great tip about routing the multi engine post oscillator! definitely gonna put that to use on mine. one unrelated thing you may have missed is that all the mod fx have a bunch of different sub effects that can be accessed with the shift button + fx select.
"can be accessed with the shift button" Thank you for this!!
for those of you that want to know how to do this, i just looked it up "Each time you flip the OFF/ON/SELECT switch to SELECT while holding the SHIFT button, a different effect sub-type is set."
Best tutorial I've seen on UA-cam for this synth by miles!! As I'm thinking of getting kne in the New Year..... gingers crossed. Definitely subbed 😉
Just bought this. Haven't gotten it yet. Am looking forward to it 😁!
3rdEye7 I’ve had mine for about 8 months and love it as much as I did on day one. So much fun to tweak the patches, easy to sequence and sounds amazing.
One thing, don’t jump into the patches for sale online like I did right away. You will find that at least half of the patches you buy are redundant or that you could have made them yourself.
The best patches for sale have demos of their patches on UA-cam. Have fun!
What a capable synth. Thanks
What a lovely device!
Hi Loopop, thank you for another excellent demo video! After watching it, I decided to add a Minilogue XD to my setup soon. That being said, I listen to your video with a subwoofer and your voice could really benefit from a low cut EQ ✨✨✨
Again; THANK a lot for doing these great videos here on youtube!
Thanks for the feedback and yes I've been doing that for probably over a year, but not as far back as this one.
@@loopop Ok, sorry for bugging you :-D
@@wackerburg not at all - if it wasn’t for people like you I wouldn’t have fixed it so thanks!
What all these folks are saying - best review of synths ever. Subbed and now binge watching. 💓
Top Minilogue XD demo - thanks 🤩👏
Just got my Korg XD today!
Loopop, another STELLAR review, so wonderful to have you on UA-cam! IF you are looking for something to broadcast next, how about an updated XD review for todays available plugins for the synth and effects? As you stated in this review, you were looking forward to what the market of 3rd party developers will bring to this synth.
Thanks so much! Indeed as I hoped there are a TON of available plugins. Noted regarding a review but I have many plans so I have to admit it's not likely soon...
For anyone wanting to know all the different things the shift button can do page 48 in the manual has all the answers my friends! Also great video as always Loopop. You have such a talent for explaining how a synth works.
Tory manifesto?
Altus Noumena Don’t you wish you could learn a synth inside out as fast as LooPop does? This guy is amazing.
Tremendo tutorial, el mejor de la XD que he visto, muchas gracias!!! Saludos desde Chile!!!
Yep, that covers it! I have to agree, the Miniligue is bargain considering what you get for the price. Bedroom studio musicians can use this was their main KB for a decent price, and older players like me that would like a small synth to set up on the right side of my KB rig for leads, fill ins, and miscellaneous sounds to go along with my other keys. We don't have to break the bank to get one. Cheers!
Thank you for creating this excellent video!
Thank you so much for your prompt reply.
Solid vid bro👌
Thanks for taking me a few levels deeper with the ML XD!🤙🤟🖖👍
Funny - I've gone full circle with this synth. I had the original and ended up selling it as I didn't quite love it enough to justify keeping it. It just always seemed a bit lacking. This is as an owner of a _Monologue_ , which I absolutely love and which gets used on everything. Then recently I decided that I needed a new polyphonic synth that could store presets and have sold a couple of monosynths to finance it (Minibrute and Neutron). Saw the reviews and demos of this and just thought 'they've really beefed this thing up!'. The new multi-engine and effects are amazing. I'm now about to greet the courier today for my new XD.
What are your thoughts on it now? Looking to get this as my first hardware synth
@@gir1258 Well, now here's the thing. I've actually gone back again to not really loving it and sold it recently. What a fickle man! Yeah. Well, this leads me to the conclusion that you have to use a synth, or any other instrument for that matter, for at least a few hours to see if it really is for you. I don't know - it's good, in fact, some would say, great, but in the end, the _sound_ just wasn't quite doing it for me, plus the envelopes I found to be a bit lacking. I can't possibly say whether you would find that, because I'm not you, so I would suggest buying from a vendor that definitely supports no-quibble returns, then carefully take it out of the box and just try it for a few days. If you don't like it, return it and no harm done. There's a lot to love about it, but like me, it may not sound the way you imagined or want. Or it might! :)
As mentioned in the first comment, I _LOVE_ my Monologue, which has far less controls and features, plus it's, you know, _monophonic,_ so not directly comparable, but nonetheless, I kept that and I didn't keep the Mini.
you're a genius. thanks man!
I have this synth and love it. Bought a used module version (without the keys) for only $430.
Love your videos!
I had the keys when this first came out, sold it, hsve midsed it for 4 years. Just found an amazing deal on a desktop model from Reverb snd am so happy to have one again. Having two to stsck either in master/slave mode or to sync together and run simultaneously, is the move! It makes it bigger and deeper than the prologue 8 (which i owned). Such an amazing 4 voice synth. So raw and blatantly analog!
I love this thing, I wish more synths would have an oscilloscope display
Get a cheap pocket oscilloscope and plug it to the audio output, it's not hard to pull off.
Very well done video presentation and review.
That open source strategy is an amazing way to get free presets, especially if your korg
"Stranger Things" mode :-)
my favorite arpeggio!
X-Files Arpeggio is better … !!!! 👻
Love the Minilogue XD, it was my first synth (this year), and brilliant video. Especially love containing third party plugin crashes!
You need anything for it besides the synthesizer itself and headphones?
@@nolan_riddle Yes, a PC/Laptop if you wanna run it over USB or a power outlet if you wanna run it standalone
Thanks a lot for your insights!!
