    The XD is a bit more pleasant on the ears, but a lot of it's tones can be created on other synths. The minilogue OG is a bit harsher and thinner, but is a truly unique sounding synth.

      I thought mine was really crap and thin sounding when I first got it but then very quickly discovered that sticking it through e.g. Zoom CDR70 with a bit of EQ, delay and reverb and....BOOOOM!!!

      respectfully, you're just pulling this out of your ass, and so is this video's creator. the two synths don't sound different enough to be discernible, and the XD is an upgrade over the OG, not a sidegrade. feel like this video is gaslighting people

    Side Chain mode is one that I overlooked for a long time, but I love it now. It is good for layering notes that have a lot of sustain, minimal filter movement. and getting clarity of the most recent note being played. The dial sets the amount of attenuation you want to give to previous notes when a new note is played. At 0 there is no attenuation and all notes are the same volume. At 100 all previous notes disappear when a new note is played. When you find a good balance you can play long and loud notes and the newest note gets the most "attention".

    I bought the Minilogue xd as my first synth and it is really great. I have a huge amount to learn but I feel it will give me lots of room to grow into the future (won't necessarily cure gear acquisition syndrome though). Thanks for the video!

      Happy to see someone diving into the world of synths. The original Minilogue was my first. Both seem to be very good choices for beginners. Although I can see the limitation of having no 3rd oscillator, and the added control over the envelope generators on the OG Minilogue lending itself to being a better initial learning tool. But you could always just not use the user oscillator on the xd and use it similarly.

    I played with the minilogue in a store and loved it and was looking forward to picking up an XD this year. I don't think the different/missing features are enough to sway me back to an original. However, I wish they made a module version of the original. I'm limited for space and don't have a ton of room.

  • @thomaskolb8785

    Thanks for the comparison! I just had the chance to get both for a day, and to be honest, for me it was no comparison, the XD ran circles around the original. The main difference is the onboard FX, which is so good that it turns even mediocre patches into inspiring and interesting sounds. Of course you can later replace them with effects in your DAW, but you have already been inspired to make songs.

    I think you’re absolutely right about the magic with the original one. I had the XD here and thought it was an update. But it wasn’t. One annoying thing was the clouding FX in most presets. But even without - it just didn’t sound celestial. So I sent the XD back and am even happier with the original. There will be nothing better in that segment. Future classic.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 3 роки тому +4

      Did the same thing. I loved the XD. It’s a wonderful synth. But there’s truly something special about the OG. Also, the full/more versatile EG and being able to modulate the EG rate/intensity is a lot of fun.

  • @manuelsteinmair
    @manuelsteinmair 4 роки тому +13

    Nice comparison! I believed the XD made the original obsolete, but now I'm not so sure about that anymore.
    If I had to choose one I'd go for a XD module because I like the digital oscillator and the effects and don't have the need for yet another keyboard.

  • @josephlepkowski2383

    I had both for a time . Had the OG when they first came out. Strings and evolving pads took much more programming time then the XD does for those type sounds. I did enjoy the the OG greatly but the 3rd osc ,user modes , and FX made the XD a completely different synth. I do not regret parting with the OG over the XD but I did wish the awesome patches I made could be imported into the XD.

    Minilogue OG = More comprehensive traditional analog synth including a 2 & 4 pole filter
    Minilogue XD = Adds a digital osc and some digital bells and whistles in exchange for limitations to the voice structure, including the loss of the 4 pole filter
    -
    Get OG if you want an analog synth that can do most everything
    Get XD if you want an analog digital synth hybrid and are ok with losing some things.
    -
    For me it's about if you have a comprehensive analog poly synth or not. If you don't, the XD leaves off things that are a major loss, like the 4 pole and full filter ADSR env. If you have other analog polys the XD's digital stuff can add nice things that others don't. Having that fancy digital osc is rare on a synth with analog filters, and evnen rarer on a poly. The Microfreak does but it's paraphonic making it be much more limited in how sounds can be played. I'm a little more partial to the OG myself mostly because I have an Electribe 2 that has some of Korg's weird digital oscillator types and an ESQ1 which does the digital osc with analog filter poly thing.

    I started out with the XD and then picked up an OG (Platinum version - lovely) 2nd hand because I like the work flow and reckoned there wouldn't be too much of a learning curve - which there wasn't. I use the XD more often than the OG but there's something very special about the OG, especially building a great sounding patch from relatively limited building blocks. Adding an external reverb can make it sound incredible. If I had to keep only one I think I'd keep the OG, which is completely illogical given the additional features and great sound of the XD but there's something about the OG that I just can't put my finger on. Both are great synths but the OG would be the keeper.

    The minilogue xd V2.0 supports MIDI Aftertouch. And its default target is LFO Int. So you could use aftertouch to modulate LFO Intensity or anything you want instead of EG. Of course you'll need a keyboard that supports arftertouch first.

    Thank you, Bo! I had been waffling back and forth on whether to get the OG or the XD. After watching this video several times, I decided to go for the OG and now a few weeks later I can say I'm still happy with my decision! The OG definitely has a slightly metallic sound that I'm not a huge fan of, but it is pretty easy to dial it out or find a way to harness it to elevate the tonal characteristics rather than just sound metallic. What I was looking for was a no-nonsense analog polysynth that wouldn't take up a lot of space, break the bank, or require a ton of fiddling and/or menu diving to create new sounds; I feel like the OG delivers on all of my needs flawlessly and I'm not looking back!
    I'm not missing the third oscillator that the XD might give me, but I'm definitely missing effects. Luckily I have a pretty decent pedalboard from my touring days playing guitar, and even just sending the Minilogue through the TC Electronics Hall of Fame reverb makes it sound lush and really warms it up.

    I still prefer the OG minilogue (and I regret having sold mine for a Prologue 8). The removal of the ADSR and the envelope interaction with the LFO is a cut too far.
    Yes the raw tone *can* be better for a lot of types of bassier sound because of the filter but I feel like the XD is a less expressive instrument even if at first glance it's more impressive. Effects can always be added (I don't use the Prologue's effects much, I prefer to record dry and add stuff later in-DAW), I don't tend to use the Prologue for bass (so the low cut imparted by resonance on the OG is largely fine) and while I like the digital oscs, if I want that kind of sound I have a Microfreak, and the slot number architecture (instead of a unique ID per oscillator) means that your patches become all but untransferable to others.
    In hindsight the only thing I disliked about the OG was the mono output; I do use the Voice Spread on the Prologue. The OG Minilogue *always* sat well in a mix and I seemed to finish a lot more tracks with it than with the Prologue; it was a better band member. The XD is a great first synth for people who want it all in one box; the OG is the rounder collaborator.

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits 4 роки тому +8

      I'm personally very grateful that I chose the OG Minilogue as my first synth around when it first came out. It's still one of my favorite synths. I learned all I needed to know about subtractive synthesis on it, and now I have a Volca Modular and Behringer Neutron (+ Arturia Keystep) to learn modular synth patching on, a Volca FM to learn FM synthesis on, a Volca Sample to learn how to use drum machines with, a Wavestation EX and Casio CZ-101 to get better at making and playing those "create *then* play with no live tweaking" kinds of patches, and a Novation Circuit to control those two, tempo sync my setup, and have an all-in-one music-making box on the go. Man, this hobby sure is addictive and expensive.

    I bought the original but am not getting along with it. Despite what others have said I find it doesn’t set well in the mix at all - the harsh metallic upper mids really stick out. Also I find it has a kind of strange notch in the sound around 1-2k despite that? It is a hell of a lot of features for the price point but the sound just isn’t working for me. Thinking about replacing with the xd which sounds a bit flatter and more suitable for pads and ambient stuff.

    They both make good sounds, but I was never able to get into the Korg *logue line. With most other synths I've tried, the hardware would let me do pretty much anything I could think of, even if it made no sense. But with the *logue series, it gave me fewer tools and fewer ways to connect them. Instead of trying to maximize the user's options, it seems like the *logues are more opinionated about what the user should and should not be able to do.
    This probably makes it a good choice for new users, since the guidance can help push them toward things which sound nice. But it may also leave people wanting more.

    • @HotStrange

      The Logue synths aren’t made to be able to do everything under the sun, but the way all the parameters work in tandem with each other is super inspiring. It’s a real instrument, that’s why I love the entire line so much. You can’t do it all, but it absolutely excels in what it can do. Also the sequencer is really powerful once you dive into it, and it adds a ton of possibilities.

I did also get a Sequential Pro 3 and I have to say I probably don't even need any other synth as it is now hands down the most interesting and best sounding synth I've ever used. I do like the Minilogue's simplicity and sound though. Maybe the xd will sound warmer when the internal electronics age a few years. I'm also excited that Korg tends to support their gear more than Roland and will probably have more updates in the future that could bring the changes you and others ask for. Keep up the great content.

    Original Minilogue pros:
    * It has an audio input. So you can use it as the third oscillator from any kind of audio source. Even from computer VST. When XD has very limited 32k multi-engine osc . Without the ability to connect external audio devices.
    * It has a pure analog delay effect using the second voices. When XD has only digital effects that you can apply at any DAW. (Yes, includes stereo effects too).
    * It has better filter (24db + 12db + hi pass filter) vs only LP 12db in XD.
    * It has assignable full ADSR (see video 10:10) with 3 destinations when XD has AD with only one destination.
    * It chipper
    XD pros:
    * Sustain pedal
    * Better sequencer (with visual curve automatization)
    * Additional CVs (only input)

    It does highlight a dilemma with these two products. They are in many regards too similar to be complementary. But not similar enough that one fully replaces the other. Neither are they similar enough that they combined could be used as a way to expand the polyphony. For a live-playing rig though, they do cover enough brounds each, that one could make use of them in combination.
    It does seem likely that the next version, will be based on the XD considered the success of the custom OSC/FX ability, and then perhaps address some of the omissions of the XD compared to the original. (But who knows, Korg might do a successor to the original, that is fully analog as a separate line of products, or follow up the XD with a product with two digital OSC + one analog)

    I had pretty cheap little synths over the years, as I’m mainly a guitarist. However, this past winter, I bought a Moog Grandmother(I’ve wanted a Moog since the 1990s as a teen) and the Minilogue (I wanted a decent synth that was capable of polyphony, ambient pads.. and Minilogue was excellent reviews for the price) I received both the same day, and absolutely love both, and play both all the time to this day, as my synth collection has grown since, with OP-1, Mother32, DFAM, Digitone, 0-Coast..found the Roland JU-06 I bought 5 years ago, and use it w Keystep, modular skiffs, that soon became 2 6Ux 416 hp cases ..The Minilogue is still my favorite of my synths (Tied w my Grandmother, which can’t be compared, as its apples to oranges in every way) I absolutely love the control over the oscillators. Sculpting new sounds with the ADSR controls is incredibly intuitive and sharp, I love the screen with the oscilloscope, displaying the sound wave, as the oscillation is changed. I’ve gotten harsh, glitchy, almost thumping arpeggiation to syrupy smooth ambient pads, to thick orchestral chords... Since I’m typically adding parts to guitar songs, and now writing more songs that are solely synth based, this is one that I absolutely would never get rid of. I spent most of March selling gear I wasn’t using and wasn’t going to, digitakt, analog heat MK2, MPC One, Drumbrute impact, a dozen boutique guitar pedals. I pretty much sold all of my non modular, and semi modular gear, in order to buy more modules, but I never considered getting rid of my Minilogue, I always recommend this synth to anyone who is considering it, (same with the Digitone for users who have more experience, or are willing to learn the menu -diving, as it sounds so good) I sometimes wish I would have gone with the XD, but now I don’t feel that badly about going with the original. Great Video, and a great synth for the money for sure.
