    Thank you for the compassion and comparisons. You put me over the top for the Cobalt. Especially with the Colbat getting software V2 updates which were massive improvements. I remember voice stealing 30 years ago and am quite surprised people don't mind it, they should be dumbfounded about it. I was considering the XD but the Colbalt fits better for my composing, and I need those extra voices and LFO's. The Cobalt App is also excellent. I am not doing repetitive EDM where voices stealing would get lost in the mass of drums and bass anyway. Thanks again

    The digital oscillator on the mini has a filter envelope inside the settings menu (separate) for more flexibility. Additionally you can bypass the filter for extra weird sounds or drum loops type things. Using the four automation lanes makes it possible to have “multi timbral” sound because you can have each of the three oscillators coming in and out.

    The Cobolt8 is an all digital machine but is modelling analog. The XD is a true hybrid, offering analogue and digital oscillators, analogue filters and amplifiers, but digital LFOs, contour generators and effects. So in reality the Korg can be setup for a true analog signal path. The Korg is also a really nice hybrid. Having digital envelope generators means maybe faster rise times etc which could be very useful. But there are also some excellent modelling synths too. They can sound really excellent at being analog. Novation Supernova comes to mind when talking about such instruments.

    This is awesome thank you for making this. It’s nice to see a comparison for a VA vs an analog just in general. I think Virtual analog is its own sound. There’s a place for both. I don’t think it’s a replacement for analog. It seems VA is more rigid and aggressive and analog is more loose and mellow

    My 2 favorites things about these synths;
    •you can upload your own recorded wav files into the Minilogue XD and use it as an oscillator trough the whole substractive synth process.
    •the way you can program the sequencer and transpose it by pressing keys on the Cobalt is the best, it's simple to quickly play a series of notes that will act as an arp pattern or just a quick sequence to play with the real arp on top of it.

    • @dicefall9
      @dicefall9 3 роки тому +5

      @@mattwoodman3017
      Yes you can😏 had to dig a little bit to find that out but it's possible. I wish Korg would have just provide a software editor that allows the user to import their own samples, but instead they decided to target programers with coding skills, its like selling an mpc to the mass and telling everyone; by the way, you've got to have coding skills to figure out how to import samples in your machine, which is a stupid thing to do.
      But thankfully, there are good people out there that have made a simple program that you can use to upload a short .wav sample into it, then save it as a korg file that you'll be able to recall in the Minilogue library manager.
      I have personally tested it myself with a short sample of a tenor recorder and it gives interesting results once uploaded in the minilogue as the user oscillator blended with a square wave, filters and efx.
      If I'm not mistaken, the link to this developper can be found on korg's website under the minilogue xd tab,
      the name of this program is [Wave Creator] by hammondeggs.
      its free of charge, but you can donate some money for the developper. there is also someone on youtube that has made a video explaining how to proceed to convert your own samples into a korg proprietary file and import it to the minilogue xd.
      hope this helps, I just wish korg would have made this whole process a little more user friendly for everyone.
      have a nice day.⌚☕

      @@NatLifeSounds Because they've got the knowledge and the software from their earlier synths. And building analog synths is a completely different beast than programming a virtual analog. Not that either is better or worse. And a good VA is complex to develop too. But when everything is in the digital domain you have much more control over the details.

  • @sailingstar8176

    For me, the key difference between these is not the sound, but the user interface. The Korg is pretty much knob-per-function, so you can see how the parameters are forming the sound immediately. The Modal is, well, modal, in that many of the knobs have dual functions, for example there is only one set of envelope controls for the three envelopes. When synths went digital, some immediacy was lost, and that slows down the creative process. If I can't change a sound quickly, I'm less likely to experiment and find interesting things, so sound design becomes more considered, more thought through in advance. It's like the difference between making music on you own with a DAW, and improvising with other musicians (which I find much more stimulating, because there are more surprises, more innovation).

    I have a couple good pair of monitors in my studio.. listening to these two side by side is like night and day. I can have my back turned to the screen and hear the difference in timbre immediately...
    minilogue xd just sounds so lush even though it may have less wave modulation capabilities seeing that it's analogue... but holy cow... for it's price i don't think it can be beat by any va synth...
    i think you'd have to step up to hydrasynth or peak to start getting any fair comparison in sound if you were to try and match the minilogue xd to a virtual analog.

Would it be better to go for the full-size keys of the Cobalt8 or if as I am, starting from scratch, would the Xd keys be fine. I mainly want to play bass on the keyboard but be able to create so synthy Bass dance music (just for myself). Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here lol.

    I'd be more likely to buy the opsix if it had the same keys as the Minilogue XD. If they'd added a few more mini keys to fill the extra width, that would have been ideal.
    The XD has textured black keys, which I prefer to the Reface black keys because my fingers don't slip off them. They're my favourite mini keys so far.
    My least favourite mini keys were also made by Korg though - on the MicroKontrol 37 keyboard controller, which are the same ones as on the MicroKorg. Those are terrible for anything involving velocity, or playing chords needing black keys with finger tips close to the top end of the keys.

    Having spent many years using analogue synthesizers and in the late 80s moving on with the digital revolution...My conclusion is that digital sounds however well they are masked always have a metallic flavour, just like the difference between mp3s & CDs, compared with vinyl records.. my final decision is that analogue is a much warmer experience! Even when it is Raw...
    So for me the korg wins!.. ps
    But I do understand the attraction of a much cheaper format with digital technology. .

    I just sold my xd. It had a few good sounds, but honestly I found running it in monophonic mode was its strength. It's almost a caricature of what is expected of analog synths, and as not much of a keyboard player I even found the polyphony to be limiting. I feel the oscillators are better on the cobalt, even though digital, which I never really expected. I'm noticing as I get older and more experienced, it's the oscillators that make the synth more than the filters(imho).

  • @apislapis

    In recent years I've moved away from using VSTis and playing music inside the box to hardware with it's immediacy, hands-on tweakability. Perhaps it's because I'm old skool (or just old), but I find it in many ways disappointing that neither of these synths have managed to break away from the virtual world. Perhaps it's because I spend all day chained to a PC at work that I don't find the prospect of being chained in my leisure time to a computer to be enthralling (supposedly a period of fun and pleasure not work which can often be a period of drudgery). There's something more appealing to me for it to be standalone hardware. I don't have to wait for an operating system to boot up, remember a password or potentially find the software unexpectedly corrupted. I switch it on and it takes a couple of seconds to work. That's just my opinion and I'm sure others will disagree, and they have every right to do so. Still, bloody good vid Starsky!

    • @apislapis
      @apislapis 3 роки тому

      @@StarskyCarr Yes in the sense of analogue circuitry and no in the sense we are using software in the 'virtual' computer world to get at what is under the hood. I guess it is a little better than menu diving and a small screen like the 90s? When inspiration comes you need to be able to work on it quickly before it goes, so swiching on a PC tends to kill it for me. Each to their own. There is no one path to creativity I suppose. Besides, not all activity involving a PC is bad or else, why do I regularly watch your channel?

    • @apislapis
      @apislapis 3 роки тому

      @@Catmemegod Perhaps I'm not making myself clear here. I'm not bothered about whether the keyboard is analogue or digital. I'm quite happy for the patches to be saved digitally.
