      Maybe you guys should get a polarizing filter for the camera to eliminate reflections from the plastic.

    The reason it has so many screws is that the capacitive sensing mechanism requires a consistent pressure on all the sliders so all the springs are compressed consistently. This is an issue custom capacitive splits had to grapple with.

      Thank you for the contribution! This video was semi-rushed so I just did some bare minimum research on the whole mechanism/history/inner workings of the technology. I'm only more familiar with the modding/lubrication process.

    This is true, people either love or hate Topre... there is no in-between. It's smooth, has a rounded tactile bump on the top and you will bottom out no matter what. Also, I would say the typing experience is very different depending on the board. Realforce and Leopold have a hard bottom because of the metal plate while HHKB are much softer to type on. Personally, I prefer HHKB. Topre requires breaking-in as stupid as this may sound. The domes gets stiffer with time, and 45g Topre is heavier than 45g MX style. As for lube, 3204 or very light 205g0 has given me the best results. As shown in the video, lubing reduces the rattle and makes it even more smooth, but it will make the keys feel a tad stiffer and you lose a bit of tactility as well. If you tried and have plenty of MX style keyboards, its always nice to have a Topre board because nothing feels like it.

    You should use a sharpie to remove the sliders, works perfectly, get a good handle on it and press on the middle of the slider, it will pop right out and it is just ever so slightly too big so it won't go through the housing.

    i have a topre keyboard, the futzitsu realforce r2. great keyboard, cost arm and a leg and i love it, customizing it on the other hand is quit the challnge, to find keycaps for it is a pain in the behind, to nod it more? good luck cause you gonna need it lol

    Technically, several companies produce similar technology. There's Niz, which is the closest, a few other dome with slider switches (although some are not capacitive) and plenty of capacitive options ranging from the model F to Varmilo EC switches.

    • @bow3i

      That's true! But it was pioneered by PFU Fujitsu so I used that as their reference. This video was semi-rushed so I didn't really bother with much backstory delving cos I needed to film and finish it in a short timeline. Maybe a different video for a different time.

    probably wishing he volunteered for modding a hhkb instead halfway through unscrewing the pcb xD

    • @IHateHandlesWayTooMuch
      @IHateHandlesWayTooMuch 2 роки тому

      Not sure about the regular hhkb, but the JIS has around 20 screws as well, so not much better there.
      The worst part in modding hasn't been explored here, which is changing the rubber domes - the trouble with those is aligning them properly as they no longer stick to the board normally.

      Mlice66 Chinese topre fancy Alice clone, I just got one because I was curious if it was any good, it’s ok. I would probably suggest the 35g dome version I got the 45 and it is a bit too stiff right now; but after a break in period it should be ok I think

    so it's basically a membrane keyboard, but very expensive?

    • @jammies701
      @jammies701 6 місяців тому

      ≠ membrane because there isn't a membrane sheet
      But it is a very expensive rubber dome keyboard, yes
      Sounds interesting, categories can have variation in quality, so I'm not too worried about that really

    • @BreadTeleporter002
      @BreadTeleporter002 29 днів тому

      Vintage keyboard collector here- try harder next time, it's a rubber dome board there literally isn't a membrane, it's a capacitive keyboard that uses rubber domes for tactility, that give a firm bottom out feel because of the backing PCB.
      I do not personally like Topre, but I know what it is and why I don't like it atleast, not my personal feel.
