Genuinely curious how many other people have static shock issues. I’ve yet to hear about it outside of this channel. JYMV’s getting this Palpatine effect and just blasting his boards somehow lmao
I don't have this issue in my office, but I have it all the time at home in the winter when I turn up the heat. After breaking a PCB, I bought a humidifer and these small keychain static dischargers
"palpatine effect" 🤣
Yeah I've literally never shocked a board before lol
The first custom I got was a kbdlite and the pcb died on me one day. Pretty frustrating
I have zapped a few LED's in my days
As a topre and hhkb diehard I got my hopes up that you had converted. I should have known better.
My HHKB became my daily because it arrived faster than the nearly 2 years for my customs to ship
Topre goated

Silent switches are lit though
im so glad famous youtuber jymv uploaded!
5:43 With qmk you can actually set one of your keys to use something called "Magic Keycodes" which are keycodes that allows you to swap the position of certain keys. So with a click of a button you can swap the position of "WIN/CMD" and "ALT/OPTION".
Your board may need to be using a relatively newer qmk firmware for the keycode to work. Which can easily be done if you just flash ur board with a newer compile qmk firmware.
That pretty much sums up my experience as well. I have a couple of hundred dollars spent on keyboards and it's . . .fun. It's important tor remember that custom keebs are hobby. When it's time to do work or when reliability matters, the hhkb comes out. My only regret is that the spring tension for the hhkb pro2 is intense compared to most linears.
After owning customs of all sizes, layouts, mounting styles, plate and switch combos, I spend almost 40hrs of my working hours with my RF2 and choose to have no other.
I have started imagining my Topre boards to be like the Honda's / Toyota's that I'd use to commute to work and meet clients etc. while the customs are the Project Cars that I use only when I'm not working.
That scuffed intro got me pretty good.
those desk clamp usb hubs are OP
Great video. Still never shocked any of my boards lol
You should give them Haimu Silent switches a try, they use a different kind of silencing method (instead of the usual squishy rubber/silicone) that may not be as silent as "complete silence" but dampens out the sound without feeling overly mushy.
Haimu silent switches includes:
_ Haimu Heartbeat (Linear)
- Haimu Whisper (Tactile)
- Haimu Seasalt Lemon Silent (Linear)
- Haimu x Geon Silent Red (Linear)
- Haimu x Geon Silent Yellow (Tactile)
- Wuque Studio WS Silent Linear
- Wuque Studio WS Silent Tactile
Personally, I after trying out the WS Silent Linear/Tactile, I do feel like the silencing seemed to be working better on the Tactiles. Silent enough without the mush (coming from Boba U4)
I love Haimu Heartbeat. The Haimu Whisper however, unfortunately has an annoying popping upstroke sound
@@jumplifyWhich Haimu exactly do you main: Seasalt lemon or silent red?
liked the video immediately with that intro
My favourite silent switches are Cherry Silent stems with Gateron Box Ink housings. The housings are for smoothness and low leaf noise, cherry silent stems are my favourite because they consistently dampen the sound(no matter the angle of keypress) and never stick to the top housing. The feel is ok for me, not too mushy, but soft boards will definitely make the switches feel too mushy. Quite curious what you would think of this combo
YoU takE thAt BaCk! TOPRE HHKB IS LIFE
I can't say I have ever even thought, much less had to worry about, static shocks when using keyboards. Honestly kinda weird. Glad you found a solution though.
This video is my first time hearing about the static shock issue and it's possibly the missing reason behind my keyboards requiring a reconnect intermittently.
Been around for agest this issue, happened a lot on boards without ESD protection. For the value of some customs they should come with it without question.
To my knowledge, only Matias Reds and Gazzew U4 switches are good silent traditional mech switches - at least stock (Aliaz dampened sliders in JWICK tactile housings are fine, but require consumption of time)-; rest are either mushy or rough feeling. After a while of daily driving a bunch of different boards, HHKB has really become the "just works" keyboard for me, with the extra USB ports being useful for if I need expansion (say for a numpad or something).
After many years of wasting my time with keyboards, HHKB is the only survivor.
I think something like the tiger80 lite with all foam and some more quiet switches like gateron box inks would also serve your use case quite good since it fells amazing sounds nice and not so loud and its out of abs plastic so it
Don’t suffers from the electro shock issue
Can't agree more, the quality varies so much in the custom world. PCBs have caused me so many issues in the last year due, going forward I will only be buying boards with universal PCBs which are easily accessible. I might even just head back to a regular apple keyboard for work.
I’m biased because the hhkb is my favorite board ever, but I have NEVER seen anybody have any issues with them in the past. Might be worth checking out if you want something bulletproof.
@@JonnyJonvilleJonathan From my personally experience, Hhkbs last a lifetime. I’ve had mine since 2019 and it still works like brand new, I do fully open it up and clean it/re-lube it every 4 months.
And from what I’ve seen from others, sim of their hhkbs are over 10 years old and are still going strong.
I find that I'm in a similar boat, though, I've always held HHKB in a higher regard than JVMV (if I buy a 60 percent, it has to be HHKB format).
Customs are nice, but often times are really embellished and irreplaceable. For example, HHKB is portable and always readily stocked if for some reason I break mines (never did btw). My Sangeo65 is heavier and not privy to movement (it has a weight for a reason) and the fact that I cannot get the board anymore from the first party means that I am afraid to move it in the first place or expose it to anything than my clean home desk. Its a recreational item, work doesn't get done on it.
HHKB is a great tool, just not the best "Experience" possible.
Do you have any custom mechs made in the last year, from mid-size manufacturers? They are a lot less jank.
I was wondering if you've tried the wuque studio silent switches. They don't use a dampening rubber but a cut slit on the stem itself
I have the WS grey silent tactiles and I love them
I have tried couple keyboards and personally I have just stuck with Keychron K2 v2 with red switches. It's popular brand and popular model. And as hybrid user 75% is only layout I would use, since it has everything you need in compact layout and it's essentially same as laptop so you have consistency. Function keys are really common in some games, software etc. And it's just quite nice to have that F row as media keys, Function keys, or maybe for assigning macros or something. And frankly I just need my F5.
Only reason for more compact layout is if you actually need extra space for mouse movement as pro fps gamer or something.
And I have personally never encountered or heard about static issues, at very least not anything that has affected electronics.
Tried hhkb for the first time at a meetup a while ago. Shit felt really nice.
What is the thing you have on your desk with all your cables plugged in to?
Haimu whispers bro all I use in my epomaker 96LS - absolutely perfect for the office and still feel great
How do you deal with static shocks then on custom? Never shocked my keyboard before but I think its a topic that we should know about.
ESD
Topre **is** cool though. I love the feel and the thock.
All fair, but have you tried Haimu Whisper Silents? They’re the only silent tactiles I’ve found that manages to avoid the mush. Those in a simple board (in my case a cheapo KBD67) have been completely bulletproof for the office setting.
Honestly I have been going through this exact experience in 2022 and 23 but I just never really thought about it like this until now.
My HHKB type s was my first "enthusiast" class board and it just never fails me. I've brought my lulu and mode 80 into work before but the former literally died half way through the day and the latter was exceptionally conspicuous when being carried in a padded hard case.
HHKB just gets chucked in my backpack and the custom keycaps have been enough for me to feel special. Also, seeing a lunatic at work running novelkey jades made me completely swear off of using a custom keyboard at work ever again. At most I may step into a Leopold as my next board but my interest in the hobby has reached its end... exactly where it started :)
Most of these problems were overcome with just getting a tiger 80 light. The TKL so you'll have all the functionality you need, and it's a plastic case so you won't get shocked.
Also it’s full of foam so you don’t need silent switches
I was watching this video for second time since JYMV made such great video. At 4:52 I was literally crying from laughing. Plz come back and make more great vids.
Upstroke silencing rings on a non-TypeS I find turns it into almost a Linear, which I LOVE. I actually think the Type-S that I have is much worse than the non-typeS that I silenced.
All of the same exact reasons I use the HHKB pro2 since 2017 as a daily driver (yeah, some 1 or 2 months here and there trying other stuff, but always defaulting to HHKB). I never got shocked, but I had customs that need to be unplugged and plugged every other day, maybe that was the reason.
is it the end of your youtube journey? (asking seriously)
Gateron holy pandas my friend. Tactile with a creamy sound. I use these at work on my zoom tkl that has flex cuts. Great for office use.
the next silent switch you should try are the Lichicx silent switches. it has three types: a linear, a tactile with a small bump and one with a big bump. Ive had it on my keyboard for a while and I love it. I hate mushy silent switches as well and out of all the silent switches I tried these are the least mushy.
In your former reviews you said that leopold is a better topre experience than hhkb, what changed, why do you think differently now? Trying do decide which one to get hhkb or leopold.
Bump
Have you tried the nightcall silents yet?
Omg. I adore my silent switches. Dang dude.
did you just mention all but the king of silents, the boba u4?
3:39 what slippers are those i saw another youtuber with em they must be good
I miss you and Taekeyboards
You have to try the new wuque studio silent switches and the niz EC boards.
Try TTC Frozens~! Very similar to "Topre" feeling on MX style switch~ (Though it's linear, can't explain the feel until you try it!)
Hmm, never had this problem. You are probably thor. :p
5:43 interesting, i switch between Mac and Windows (i WFH and my work computer is a mac) but I keep my keyboard layout as is on both. I use the Mac/Unix layout with GUI/Cmd/Win to immediately next to Space, then Alt/Option then Ctrl. I say interesting because looking around at keyboards and some that are marketed for compatibility to both even have switches that let you swap between Space-Gui-Alt and Space-Alt-GUI...doesn't that mess with your muscle memory having to swap the keys like that?
Try the Lucy silent linears from divinikeys. I think they really don't suck.
for research purpose, what is the name of that alice board?
Time to try the gateron gecko switches
Haimu heartbeats?
This video is like a car guy explaining why he owns an unmodified Toyota Camry - he's not gonna be enthusiastic about this, but it sure as hell gets the job done.
No sound test? 😥
what slippers do you have on at 3:42
This was the most shocking discovery for me after years into the hobby - how freaking unreliable custom keyboards are! Now for me not only ESD is a must, but a hotswap MCU as well, because oh boi those are a bitch to replace.
Have you ever picked up an MX Mechanical Mini?
I really like my split board. I feel that I have to wait for someone to make a board with the new mx low profile switches. they seem to be silent enough. I wish I could make a custom board with these switches or at least one with fully custom keybindings.
HHKB split board would be the end-game!
Even my good old ReDragon keyboard is pretty loud. If I had a job, my manager would cook me for using it if nearby co-workers get mad.
Have been using one of these for years. For programming it's perfect.
I feel like for the amount of money you've spent on HHKB keyboards you are an official fan, but like, in a mid way. Like the Dilbert of fans.
What about the Leopold FC660C?
Good old reliable.
This is why businesses around the world have been using Topre since the 80's, if you need a keyboard that works flawlessly 100% of the time there is no substitute.
Does anyone know if there is an alice (or alice-ish) board that I can use topre on?
There was the osav2 but the group buy ended a long time ago.
There might be a v3 in a couple of years? But as far as I know there really hasn’t been much talk for a v3 on their discord.
i love my HHKB type s to death an i refuse to use anything else
Have you tried Haimu heartbeat silent switches? They are silent switches without the mushy feel. Truly awesome.
But they can't thock 🥺
@@rherbm Hear me out: thock is overrated.
Plus the Haimu switches are dirt cheap, talking $27 for 90 of them or $33 for 110 of them, although they definitely require lubing.
I heard gateron gecko doesn't feel mushy
hhkb is love
lol i think you may wanna invest in a humidifier
Be one with Cup Rubber 🙏
That's shocking
Why this over an FC660C?
Jenny nicholson mentioned 🗿
i should try out a hhkb since i really like the typing feel of a realforce r2 pfu
Realforce is definitely stiffer. Personally my preference at the desk. I travel with hhkb. Hhkb is softer feeling overall but realforce is smoother and has less wobble / need for silencing
classic ally 🤝
people actually destryo their keyboards be having a light electrical discharge?
HHKB is just the best.
Why do they hike get so many bad reviews than? Oh md I have 2 custom keyboards one for 2 years no issues and a second I just got and been using for 2 weeks no issues yet
my pro2 is the best keyboard i ever used
Get a Pro 2, brah. The key feel is peak Topre.
Yooo $2.00 up-charge for a fried egg is criminal.
😂
I have nicer keyboards that I can type faster with but keep finding myself doing the same and daily driving a modded and lubed HHKB Hybrid.
After buying and using the Pok3r for a month, I immediately knew what my "endgame" keyboard would look like. It took me a while of experimenting with different parts to get there - but I eventually did.
I have a 60% custom (like a custom custom, not an off the shelf "custom") keyboard with my own keymap, kailh box silents, and a wooden case to eliminate the risk of static shock. And I *had to* go with a custom build, because virtually no manufacturer offers a 60% layout with split right shift.
I have a box of spare parts, like switches or pre-flashed PCBs in case of a catastrophic failure, and a fully built spare for double the safety.
The keyboard is a work tool. First and foremost it needs to be an extension of yourself, so that you can input whatever you need without even thinking about it. I am kinda surprised by the direction this hobby took, it seems the new motto is "thock over function".
The first custom I got was a kbdlite and the pcb died on me one day. Pretty frustrating
Are you the flash
Lol wtf was that intro
+ my man has 5V of electricity built into his body
This is a bit off topic but I generally don't like Korean restaurants. Once they get popular the amount of food you get decreases but they increase the price.
Why custom keyboards are unreliable?
I make my very cheap ass custom 1.5 years ago, with one of outemu silent switches, XDA keycap profile... And it's still fine. Never disappointed or lagged also typing is pleasure and like 5 times more silent that regular (not mechanical) keyboard. I lubed it twice from that time btw.
I dislike HHKB for only 1 reason: the backspace causes a lot of typos.
It's like a step of stair is a little higher than the rest, it will cause a fall.
customcels seething over toprechads
Promo*SM
Come back!
Reject customs return to Topre
I got both a HHKB and the Leopold silent version..... Leopold Topre silent is godlike, the keycap profile, the layout, the weight and build, Leopold known for the best pre build keyboards in the business, extremely high quality key caps, and with the Topre Silent had 0 rattle on any key not even on the spacebar out of the box. I get the appeal of HHKB but Leopold Topre Silent are the best, I even returned a keyboard that costed me 700 usd for it, the Kinesis advantage 360 pro. Also the stock HHKB sounds like typing on Lego's, the stock Leopold Silent sounds better than the HHKB lubed. Unreal Topre Modification Guide (look this up on Google to make your Topre experience even beter, it will guide you to Unreal Topre's site that also sells all the lubes and other stuff) That dude is known in the community for being the best Topre modder.
