Brian Wilson was pure genius. Back then in the 60's, I knew they were way ahead of their time with that sound of theirs. They made California a, genre' a few tried to copy their sound but it came out way too cheesy, and they never came close to what Brian Wilson created.

Yeah, but they never did quite get out of the shadow of The Beatles. That's your cue, exploding heads :-)

    • @SophiesDriver

The Beatles have at least ten songs like that. And individually, former Beatles have more than another handful of songs like that. And my assertion ignores ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY else. Hell, Bob Dylan has at the very least twenty songs like that.
I can grant "no exaggeration, no hyperbole."
But there's an awful lot of subjectivity in there.

The instrument is a Theramin. The rap group you were reminded of were The Beasty Boys. There are many beautiful songs by the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was the composer and it's worth listening to the song "In My Room" and then watching a documentairy about him. Nice that you compared their sound with Bach, it has that classical quality.

@Deveroth -- You are right ... and you are wrong about the instrument not being a Theremin. The Beach Boys had a custom version build for them, which was played by touching. That was because a touchless Theremin required much presicion that could not be garanteed when playing multiple gigs a day and drinking.

You are correct about the instrument not being invented specifically for the Beach Boys, but take it easy there, Captain Pedantic.

That’s a theramin. One of the first electronic instruments. There were several different varieties, this was a later, tactile one. The ones that were used in early science fiction movies were made of metal and vibrated. The
sound they made was by placing your hands between the side and bottom reeds and what looks like you’re ‘playing the air’! There are early films of artists that masterfully play the theramin. I hope you’ll check them out one day.

When this song was recorded, it ended up being the most expensive single ever produced! It cost more to make than an entire album at the time. The producer wanted it to be unlike anything ever heard before and worked on it for weeks adding more layers to the track and didn't stop until it was just right. This is the alternate version. The single is shorter and sweeter.

Possibly the most important song every written in pop music history. For a while The Beach Boys rivaled The Beatles in popularity and influence over the music industry. The album that was written right around the same time "Pet Sounds" is widely considered the best and most important album ever made in pop music history. Paul McCartney of The Beatles claimed it was his favorite record and superior to anything his group could ever manage to do. The lead singer here, Brian Wilson, also blew up his mind with creative force on this song and the album to the extent he had a full breakdown and was absent from the music scene for decades after.

Mr. Blaine passed away a few months ago at the age of 95. Mr. Blaine is the most recorded drummer in the history of recorded music. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew, a studio band that played on many, many tracks. He was also the stage drummer for the Carpenters. The Wrecking Crew also were the musicians on almost every television show. The Brady Bunch, the Munsters, etc. RIP Mr. Blaine.

The instrument you asked about is the Theraman. It allows you to manipulate sound waves. It was used many years ago in the old horror films (especially in the 1950s).
Also, the song is from their "Pet Sounds" album, a release that made groups like The Beatles and Pink Floyd to wonder if they would survive.

1:18 That is a theramin. It's really cool to watch people play because usually their hands are just in the air, not touching anything. They were used in a lot of old sci-fi movies.

When you speak today of good vibes or good vibrations, you can trace it back to this song. This is more or less where the expression first was coined. This song was part of their pet sounds album, a landmark release for the beach boys. Two other songs that you’re going to want to listen to our “wouldn’t it be nice“ and “God only knows“Which some people think is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. But for just pure fun, go back and listen to their earlier songs called “fun fun fun” and “dance dance dance.”

The invisible 'hero' of this song is the reverb: first all electronic reverb unit.
Older units used springs and contact microphones, their unit used 1,000's of tiny amplifiers connected together.
This song also has the distinction of being one of the most expensive to record, considering the reverb unit was made for this one song.
The sustain at 4:05 can't be done with springs!

The story goes that Brian and his mother were talking about how dogs seem to sense things right before they happen and she said that dogs pick up on our vibrations, and he was fascinated with that and wrote this song. No one had ever heard anything like this before (they didn't have multiple tracks in studios, etc.). To hear some of his depth, you could try "Fun Fun Fun", "Surfin' USA", "God Only Knows" , " In My Room", and "Caroline, No".

The funky instrument is the Electro-Theremin, invented in the late 50's. With one hand controlling a volume knob, you slide a button back & forth with the other hand as if adjusting a fader, to vary the musical pitch (the button holds a loop of string inside that's connected to a pitch knob, in a way similar to an older FM radio tuner), and it produces a sound quite like the sound of the much older Theremin, a very often-heard sound effect and/or musical device featured in dozens of old-time Hollywood monster movies. The original Theremin, a product of an altogether different inventor, worked on a different design that required precise motions & positioning of both hands held in mid-air near a pair of antennae, & was a lot harder to learn to play. The elder Theremin from 101 years ago is still unique in that it's played without actually touching it.

Brian Wilson is one of the few musical genii in pop, at any time or in any genre to have ever existed. Leonard Bernstein, the conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at that time, did a TV show about the emerging 60's pop music revolution. In it, he stated that the "greatest song ever written by anyone. -- classical composers included- was "Surf's Up" by Brian Wilson. This freaked Brian out and the song wasn't released until years later when he was no longer with the band. The "spooky" sounding musical instrument is a theremin. "Good Vibrations" was 60s slang for someone, something, or some event that seemed to be very wholesome.

I’m so glad you played that and reacted to it
This came out before I was in high school I played on the bus you got to realize we didn’t have any video back then it was just the music just the music just the fucking music
You got to realize how astounding this was to us as a children before high school way back then
That instrument you’re hearing that’s fluttering around that bitch I thought was a Thurman but actually was a special instrument made by one of the bandmembers
The theremin is an instrument that you play without touching your hands to anything in the next several years I bought a kit to make the Thurman but I didn’t realize the good thing the guy was playing wasn’t actually a theremin
Butns inspired me to start my career in electronic music this song was one of the many songs besides Jimi Hendrix and his Wawa pedal that inspired me to take up making electronic devices for musicians

Brian Wilson to who isn't in the video wrote this son while the band was on tour, Brian stayed home due to his anxiety of flight. The only band's involvement was the vocals, Brian had hired studio musicians to record the music while the band was touring japan. This song was written from scratch musically and lyrically by Brian Wilson, the "Pet Sounds" album became the well received and critically acclaimed record. Brian's dad Murray was the band's original manager and producer but Brian fired dad.

If no one posted an answer to your question India about what that strange instrument was -- it was a theremin. Originally invented in 1928! Its sound used mostly in the '50s in science-fiction films. Its use in this hit single surprised even The Beatles -- because it was the first time it was used melodically. The effect it had on Lennon-McCartney and their producer George Martin of The Beatles is another story. The song and the album it came from Pet Sounds made a profound impression on them. The follow-up song Heroes and Villains was also an incredible composition and performance.

You have to try to see this song in it's historical context. There had never been anything like it before in "pop" music. Brian Wilson took a basic pop tune and added layers of creative sounds and complicated structure that had never been done before. This song blew the Beatle's minds and inspired them to make their own music more complex and mature - they surely did that! The Beatles had George Martin, a knowledgable and excellent music producer to help them - the Beach Boys only had their fellow band member, a very YOUNG Brian Wilson.

Brian Wilson would hear the music in his head.....Brian's mom saw a dog on her lawn and said it made her happy and gave her good vibrations.....good feelings. The reason the Beatles made Sgt Pepper was because they heard Pet sounds. You are thinking The Beastie Boys old school rappers. Love you content and honest reactions. The "spooky" instrument you hear is called a theramone I believe. A very early electronic piano.

When I was growing up, we used to cruise Van Nuys Blvd in our hot rod and blast the Beach Boys music... a Southern Calif rite of passage. We considered it "Surfer Music" along with other groups such as Jan and Dean, The Safaris, The Ventures and other groups. Can't forget Dick Dale (known as the King of the Surf Guitar). Magic time in California (The 70's) when the hot rod and surfing culture came together (also the just blossoming skater culture too).

Try not to have too much fun with your homework, India, now this music is really from my parent's time, but as children we spun the singles on 45's and they had these and a lot a Beatles Classics in the mix, so as a child I would spin my parent's records and dance with my cousins in the '70s to songs from the '60s during summer vacation when I was 9 & 10!

Of the Rock And Roll genre, bands in Southern California started a new sound called Surfin' Music or Rock And Roll and The Beach Boys became the most popular Surfin' Rock band. They are kind of like the Beatles of Surfin' Music.
Hey India, if you are still reacting to teen aged type of movies, I highly recommend the movie "American Graffiti". Released in 1973. It is a cult classic about teens coming of age in 1962. The movie was produced by Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather movies) and written/directed by George Lucas (of Star Wars fame and before the first Star Wars movie) and a long list of up and coming young actors such as Harrison Ford (also of Star Wars fame), Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Richard Dreyfuss to name a few. You probably don't even know most of these people. But, it captured baby boomers and life in 1962. Great movie with a great list of old Rock And Roll songs soundtrack.

The special instrument that the band member is playing is called a zither. It is an early electronic musical instrument from almost 100 years ago. It was first used for Classical music performances. In the 1950s, some movie studios used zithers to create "scary music" for science fiction and horror movies. One good example of this, is the 1951 film, "The Day The Earth Stood Still". The Beach Boys, however, had a different idea on how to play a zither, and used it to get a unique sound for the song, "Good Vibrations", which you see and hear here, from around 1966.

I-I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair

    I'm pickin' up good vibrations

Close my eyes, she's somehow closer now
Softly smile, I know she must be kind
When I look in her eyes
She goes with me to a blossom world
    I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations (Oom bop bop)
