In the Autumn of 1966, the music industry was shaken to its core with the release of Good Vibrations. Brian Wilson adopted a module recording approach. He would write short vignettes then record them individually (in one of several Hollywood area recording studios available to him) He would then assemble the sections in the fashion he saw fit. Recording was never the same. The buttoned down recording industry began loosening their collective ties. The music that followed in the wake created by Good Vibrations is phenomenal and indeed changed the world. Amazing reaction JAYY. Thanks for sharing, RNB

Another additional note... the Beach Boys' success from the late '50s into the early '60s were a large piece of Capitol Records' success. But in 1963, Capitol received the North American distribution rights to an English band, and that band and their massive revenue success all but buried the fading surf-sound of The Beach Boys. Much to Brian Wilson's disgust. Suddenly, HIS Capitol Records were taking away HIS studio time, HIS marketing powers and handing them over to four mop-tops instead. By the end of 1964, That Band was everyone's favorite and Brian's Beach Boys were long-gone. It had to be a horrible blow to a young man who'd spent his life being told how worthless he was by his ruthless father. Brian had escaped that tyranny, only to hand over so much power to another set of greedy dictators who'd betray him.
And his blow against the empire was PET SOUNDS.

By the way, I'd argue that Brian's righteous outrage towards Capitol Records is why they let him have so much studio equipment in his own home, and use so much studio time working on Brian's 'reply' to RUBBER SOUL. I think if Capitol didn't feel guilty about their turning their backs on Brian, he'd have never received so much NON-ATTENTION. "Here, Brian - take what you want. Work when you feel like it. Stay out of our hair. We won't bother you again."
Never has so little done so much for so many.

@@BuffaloC305 Hi Chuck, A couple comments if I may. I don't believe by the end of 1964 the BB's were "long gone". The list of hit singles that followed I Get Around in mid 1964 is an impressive one that shows the growth of Brian as a writer and producer. Don't Worry Baby, When I Grow Up, Wendy, Dance Dance Dance, The Warmth Of The Sun, Do You Wanna Dance, Please Let Me Wonder, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls and Let Him Run sold millions upon millions of units worldwide by the time of the release of Pet Sounds in the Spring of1965. If indeed P S was Brian's middle finger to Capital Records, their response was swift. Releasing the "Party' album in Jan of 1966. Effectively sinking P S in the charts forever. Brian's counterpunch was Good Vibrations, which stunned the music world. It was at this point Capital opened the vaults and up front financed the ill fated Smile project. Once it was obvious to Capital that Brian was losing the battle with his inner demons in the latter part of 1967,, they assisted in the Brothers home studio. In the hopes of recouping some of their financial investment. Sadly by then Brian, for all intents and purposes had checked out and never fully returned to the form that made him the mid 1960's savant of the music world. Cheers, RNB

Awesome summary and educational info, thank you!!! I’m 41 and have seen The Beach Boys over 70 times. Not always the original members, as you know, but my parents are huge hippies and took me and my siblings to concerts and musical festivals across the country EVERY single summer of my life into we were all over 18 and in college. Best memories of my life was when we’d pull up to a new city and location and we’d find out The Beach Boys were there!!! Sometimes we had to watch them at minor league baseball stadiums as the entertainment after the show, but we didn’t care, as long as we could see and hear them. I swear I had the best childhood EVER!!!

one of the greatest songs ever recorded. So many layers. I remember when it first came out (on crummy AM radio) and although you heard all the parts, and they registered in your melon, when you listen to it today, all digital, and ur noggin registers every part, you marvel at how great the effort was. I think because so much music, back then, was coming out that was different to everything else that was coming out, you just accepted it, without the appreciation that you recognize today

Masterpiece! The trippy sci-fi sound you might be wondering about comes from a theremin, an electronic musical instrument invented in 1920. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin used one on several of their songs too. And yes, that was a tambourine.

The chord they sing right after the middle part, astounding, on point , in tune, incredible! Can't believe you have not heard this yet until now...it's a mjor claassic and game changer. The Beatles heard this and thought my God we gotta compete with that? They ended up doing Sergeant Peppers Lonelly Hearts Club Band album.

Great song suggestions below. Add "California Girls". Brian Wilson called this one his "pocket symphony". Many session players from the Wrecking Crew performed on the song. Nothing like some GOOD vibrations!! Thanks Brian! Exactly right, Jayy. Brian's Mom explained that vibes thing to him, using a dog knowing good folks from bad by vibrations, and he got the point! Thanks Jayy!

  • @joe6096

The Beatles released Rubber Soul in 1965. Brian Wilson thought it was so amazing he had to change The Beach Boys sound from the cute and fun surfing, cars, and girls 2 minute pop ditties to a more surreal, avant guard, thought provoking sound with cerebral, intelligent lyrics.
He came up with Good Vibrations and the Pet Sounds album.
They made Paul McCartney want to do something better than that. So the Beatles came out with Strawberry Fields Forever and the Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
For a brief period from 1965-67, The Beach Boys and the Beatles were the two greatest bands in the world competing for who could make a better song or album.

The genius of Brian Wilson, he would write the lyrics and the music and the backing vocals AND he was deaf in one ear thanks to a hit from his asshole father who then sold the rights to all their music behind their backs. Later on Brian was basically held hostage and drugged by a 'psychiatrist' until his maid told his new girlfriend what was going on and she got him out of there. Poor Brian went through a lot but came out shining with his unique talent. ❤️

I still remember the very first time I heard this awesome tune. It was early fall in 1966 and I went bowling with my Aunt and Uncle. There was a Juke Box over by the pinball machines that a guy plunked a dime in to play "Good Vibrations", I had never heard such magic before, was hooked right then and there, and never looked back...take that! Country and Western!

I think I know what you said about feeling a vibe.
A little bit of background, I'm an old coot in Australia, on a pension I've had 1 fur baby almost 16 years & almost 3 months ago dumped 2 kittens at the gate & my heart said oh I can't let you starve so I adopted em, now they are costing me around $120 a fortnight to feed all 3.
So I've been hunting cans, plastic & glass bottles for the 10c refunds. Every week I go the 6km into town with a long handle grabby tool and go through the bins in the main Street after midnight.
Yesterday I almost didn't take my phone because it wasn't fully charged, but I did. (Had a feeling)
A bit after 1amI heard a lady screaming in great distress, when she got to me I could see blood coming out of her mouth, I knew she had been bashed I asked if she wanted me to call the police,?
She could barely say yes please, so naturally I did & waited while trying to comfort her & when the 1st of 2 police cars arrived as I was thinking with the Ambulance dispatch who called after getting a call from police dispatch. So if I hadn't had my phone it would have taken longer to get her 1/2mile down the road to the 24hr petrol station..

it is too bad that mike love talked brian into changing the lyrics....which totally changes the meaning of the song
good vibrations was meant to be the final song on the smile album
smile's theme was americana....with the irony of being exposing the dark side of america
the original lyrics arent of a guy being taken to a magical place because of the love and good vibrations of a girl....they were of unrequited love...of a guy who sees a girl across the room and imagining what being with her what would be like and if she was picking up from him, the amazing vibes he believed he was picking up from her
tony asher understood brian....mike love hated irony
