Same here boomer from San Diego. The BEACHBOYS were pride of Southern CALIFORNIA. THOSE hits like California girls I get AROUND 409...were part of my soul.
Yes they defined my Generation it was a special place in time, I hate the California mith BS from so called critics,, my guess is they never lived a minute of it, but I sure did.
@josephharnett5075 yep we're connected to them. Every time I hear them I'm connected to my teenage years ... summertime ... Redondo Beach ... bikinis ... surfboard ... volleyball ... home. My mom knew Audrey and a older friend was high school buddies with Mike Love ... they are connected to a time and place
I first heard this song on the radio while driving along in my car when it first came out in 1966. I could show the spot on the road where I heard it. I thought it was mind blowing.
I love how she is smiling and bopping before the first verse is even finished. It's a beautiful song. Carl's voice is gold on this masterpiece. Beach Boys and Beatles have that power.
There is so much going on in this song it's complexities may be overwhelming. Having been around since this songs release it is a very monumental icon of the 60s ambience ✌️🏄♂️
I remember waking up to this song in the middle of the night when I was a kid. The radio in our bedroom was on. There was a radio on somewhere in the house 24/7 back then. We would sit in our kitchen listening to the radio for hours.
Paul McCartney was a big Beach Boys fan. It’s rumored that the song cost $50,000 to record - in 1966 dollars. That would be over $450,000 today. Also, the version you’re reacting to is not the version that was commercially released.
This isn't the original 1966 mix that went to #1 in the US (it's here ua-cam.com/video/apBWI6xrbLY/v-deo.html ), this one has additional bits from the sessions added to the bridge and outro and was officially released in 2011 as part of the The Smile Sessions (what a great unreleased album! ). This song was worked on for hundreds of hours and was the mostly costly song to produce of all time at the time.
@@Fool3SufferingFools It was worked from February 66 (during Pet Sounds sessions) through to September 66. A majority of the recordings were from late May to late September.
this may be actually Brian Wilson's band mixed in with the original for the 2004 Smile Album, entirely Brian Wilson band Wondermints, and others for the 2004 Smile album.
Brian- who wrote the instrumental part- first used the theremin on"I just Wasn't Made For These Times" just prior to using it on Good Vibrations. So this was just an expansion. As a rabid fourteen year old BB fan, I can attest that the song coming on the radio had an astounding impact on listeners and captured a lot of the Zeitgeist of the times- much like the Beatles "Strawberry Fields". Those 2 songs changed pop music forever into something with much artier potential. Although lo these many years later pop music appears to have morphed into a commodity. Like Wallpaper, another innovator ( Zappa) said.
Beach Boys' ballads are the best way to appreciate their talent and greatness - Listen to "Surfer Girl", "In My Room", Don't Worry, Baby", "The Warmth of the Sun", "Caroline, No", etc.
The high pitched instrument is called a theramin. I'm sure it's been replaced by the synth now. Back then it was ground breaking. Brian Wilson said he came up with the song after his mother told him about a magazine article that said dogs could pick up on people's vibrations. He then wondered if people could do that too, and get good or bad vibes from each other. Thanks for your review!
Electro-Theremin. Theremin was invented in the 1920s and was hardly "groundbreaking" by 1966. It had been used with orchestras and in bad sci-fi movies for decades.
This song always reminds me of being a kid and loading the family into my dad's Corvair convertible and driving over to Daytona Beach on the weekends. Damn I'm getting old...
My dad and his brothers were all surfers in so cal area back in the 60’s and 70’s and were big beach boy fans. Every time I hear a beach boys song, I think of my dad. This is my favorite song from them. Thank you for your reaction.
My Dad imported this from America when it was released into the uk. Fast forward to myself playing this as a 10 year old - amazing track commonly voted one of the best of all time. Love the track and shared memories with my Dad. Thanks for reviewing.
There’s probably nothing I can add here that others haven’t said, so I’ll just say thanks for listening to it. I enjoyed your reaction as I have your previous reactions. Good Vibrations was voted by, I think Rolling Stone Magazine, as the number 1 pop song of the 20th Century. I could be wrong on that, but it’s something I seem to recall.
As a musician I can tell you this is up there on my list. Even though it was before my time. Most musically inclined realize Brian Wilson was a genius.
Also, my first ever concert was The Beach Boys in Perth Western Australia in 1978. I had amazing front row seats, and that night was known as their “Apology Concert”. After that night, no concert ever was as good.
that's a different version than the record version. i recommend the record version. for two other great beach boy songs check out "surfin' usa," "i get around" and their album version of "barbara ann." the album version od "barabara ann" is one of the most fun and entertaining party songs i ever heard.
Brian Wilson is a genius musician and his life was depicted brilliantly in the movie Love and Mercy. So many beautiful songs. Listen to God Only Knows and enjoy their talent.
I'm glad you've finally reviewed a Beach Boys' tune. In 1965, this tune was so far ahead of its time, its not funny. I highly recommend Surf's Up, Sail On Sailor, and Warmth of the Sun. The instrument that you were wondering about on Good Vibrations is a theremin. Oh, another band you should react to is The Kinks circa '64-66. Like the Beach Boys, the Kinks wall of sound vocals is incredible.
It’s the most advanced pioneering song of the sixties when you lived in that era and the song came in for the first time you were mesmerised and said to yourself WOW..
Home run! I lived here in SO CAL all my days close to Huntington Beach grew up surfing up and down California's beaches with the Beach Boys dialed in to our transistor radio among others . Big influence, surfs up and cowabunga baby !
Don’t worry about not “getting it” first time. Imagine hearing it in 1965, and the single release (shorter and more understandable than this one) would be a better place to start for anyone 😊
IMO, this is THE best BBoys tune... There are other great songs, usually rooted in the harmonies, rather than a diversity of instruments. Thanx for bringing back memories related to its release by doing this reaction!
I know exactly where your coming from. Even though the BB were close to my generation I was more into Rock not soft rock. That being said you just can’t help but feel the tightness in this band and how talented they are
The best way to listen to the Beach Boys, especially the entire Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations", is lying down in a dark room with headphones on. There are so many elements and layers in addition to the brilliant harmonizing that few bands over the last 60 years have come close to replicating the sound much less surpassing it. Brian Wilson was way WAY ahead of his time.
Song's creator, Brian Wilson, is missing from this clip--he had stopped performing with the group live, for mental-health reasons. It was the most expensive single ever recorded, up to that point.
A historic masterpiece that no one has touched since. So far ahead of its time that people still don't really understand it. Capitol Records didn't really promote it because they didn't get it. No one did. No samples. No pitch correction. Real drums. Real guitars and keyboards. It took approximately 90 hours to record and produce in 4 different studios.
Brian Wilson was competing with the Beatles this was the album " Pet Sounds" and it was a hit .Then the Beatles rolled out Sgt Peppers . Try "Don.t Worry Baby"" Kokomo" "Wouldn'.t It Be Nice" "California Girls" thank you
This clip mixes in outtakes from the song's creation in the studio ("hum-de-dow"), which is why it is disjointed. Listen to the original single. Brian knew exactly what he was doing.
What amazes me is that nobody mentions the church music being played before "gotta keep those loving good vibrations happening with you" He married her! That is the whole point of the song!
It seems he uses an “electro theremin” which is different to a “theremin”. A theremin is used by waving your hands between two aerials. An electro theremin uses a board with strings you slide up and down on.
I love , love that if a song doesn't hit you you say so ! its such a turn off when a reactor says that every song they listen to is the greatest song they've ever heard . just give an honest reaction . thank you
I will be honest iam more into classic rock bands and the blues, bands like Led Zeppelin, Stones The Who, Jeff Beck etc etc but the Beach Boys to me personally they put me to sleep....but to each their own🙏
That unique instrument is a tannerin. A lot of people will tell you it's a theremin and it certainly sounds like a theremin but the distinction is how the instrument is played. A theremin is not touched while it is played. The notes are made by moving your hands in proximity to the antennae whereas a tannerin uses a slide, which you can see being moved during the parts of the song that have that instrument. Most people probably won't care about that difference but there ya go. :)
Here's a nicely done Theremin performance of a short track from the A-List 1951 Sci-Fi movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still". The vertical rod controls the pitch and the horizontal loop controls the volume ua-cam.com/video/5VQgImg15sQ/v-deo.html An accomplished theremin artist can play complicated classical pieces on the instrument. This was from an era where vocals and harmonies were the only things that mattered. Good thing the BBs had good music underneath to go with it. A lot of their contemporaries' music doesn't hold up as well.
The Beach Boys have more than one style of music, though they are basically mid-60s California rock. Generally considered surfer music, but as you've noticed they experiment with interesting variations. I'd suggest just starting with Surfing USA, then check out 409, Fun Fun Fun, I Get Around, In My Room, and The Sloop John B. Then re-try Good Vibrations (studio version). (You might get a fuller flavor of the era from the movie American Graffiti.) For alternative surfer music, try Dick Dale & the Deltones (Misirlou), The Surfaris (Wipe Out), The Ventures (Pipeline), and Gene Gray & The Stingrays (Surf Bunny). For something completely different, give a listen to The Talking Heads, "Burning Down the House". But really, the best intro to their music is the incredible concert video "Stop Making Sense". Which is here: ua-cam.com/video/53dikqNZLgA/v-deo.html (1 hr 38 min)
Another good show. You have really been picking out big, important song. This was in Rolling Stone's Top 10 songs.Think about what's happening then and who they are ...beach boys.
It's a bit of an odd one, and hard to describe for sure isn't it? But you know, a lot of songs can be described like " the world before the song and the world after the song". Hey Jude... Space Oddity...The times they are a changing...to name a few. Perhaps this one has the bizarre quality of changing absolutely everything and absolutely nothing at the same time. " The Beach Boys just sang a song..." "Oh really? What about?" " A girl". "Oh cool." "Are you sure it wasn't about perspective, newness, optimism, memory, dancing in the dancehall, climbing the Rocky mountains, surfing , seeing yourself a little clearer, faith, love, hope, principles, progress, breaking new ground, self confidence, patience, satisfaction, intrigue, logic, and power?" " Nah, it was a girl". "Cool."
I certainly understand your reaction to this, however it should be noted that this isn't the album version. This might be an early demo, but it doesn't have the same polished sound as the album version.
This isn't the original 1966 American studio mix but still good. Probably the most underrated band in history. They've often been referred to as the American Beatles and I can't argue with that. Are they The Beatles? No, of course not, but then no one else were, are, or ever will be The Beatles because it ain't happening never, never, ever happening again. If I were to look at popular music in terms of astronomy one could look through a telescope and would discover The Beatles out there and find that they're in a special galaxy of their own. Next to The Beatles galaxy one would bring into focus the Bob Dylan Galaxy. Dylan is definitely a galaxy of his own. After these two discoveries, one would soon find out that there are these two and every other artist is stuck here with us in the Milky Way Galaxy. That's just the way it is. You want too hear something different? Then check out what is still regarded as the greatest album track in history. That would be The Beatles track "A Day In The Life" from their iconic 1967 album "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". If you've never heard this song then your ears are in for a treat. There's a video that's been out there for years for the song. You don't want that. You want it straight off the Lp and the one you want is from the 2017 50th Anniversary Remix of the "Sgt Peppers" album. Also from this album, John Lennon's "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" same 2017 remix deal with these two. These two along with "A Day In The Life" are pure sonic eargasm material. Check them out, pure musical genius with these three. Peace
This is not the original version that was released. Brian was the single-greatest American pop/rock composer of all-time. His structure, voicings, arrangements (vocal and instrumental), tempos, and key changes were like nothing heard before. For more adventurous music by him and The Boys, try "The Little Girl I Once Knew," "This Whole World," "Cool, Cool Water," "From There to Back Again," and solo works like "Sail Away" and "South American." Really, our only true musical genius of the past 60 years. The second time you listen to some of his songs, they aren't as "jarring" and you can never remember what you stumbled over the first time you heard it because it all seems to perfect.
As someone who was born in and grew up in San Diego, CA, in the late 1950s and the 1960s, I can attest to the power of The Beach Boys.
I agree being a SO-CAL Guy we all have this attraction to our local boys from Hawthorne

I certainly understand your reaction to this, however it should be noted that this isn't the album version. This might be an early demo, but it doesn't have the same polished sound as the album version.
The instrument is a theremin.
The second time you listen to some of his songs, they aren't as "jarring" and you can never remember what you stumbled over the first time you heard it because it all seems to perfect.
if you like this one try the Doors riders on the storm (y) all the harmony
That instrument is a theramin

Hey Rebecka - Take a listen to "The VENTURES". Now I can't be sure - but I think you may like them.
