They started at about the Same time. The Beach Boys were founded in Hawthorne California in 1961. They released their first single Surfin which was a single produced and realized by their first manager, their abusive father Murray Wilson. Murray is the reason why Brian Wilson is deaf in his right ear since he slammed him with a board when he was three. The Beatles. I know ringo Starr first officially played with the Beatles on August 18th 1962 after the firing of Pete Best. Pete had been playing with the Beatles for the better part of two years but his drumming was not good enough for recording. George Martin had strict recording standards. Plus th Beatles like the camaraderie with ringo and they got along well plus he’s a damned good drummer and always was according to John Lennon. The Beach Boys reached their fame and popularity about roughly one year before the Beatles and Beatlemania as it was called came to America in February of 1964 and their performance in the Ed Sullivan Show. 1963 and 1964 were pretty good for The Beach Boys.

So the Beatles were a big distraction from the pain, especially for young people. Over time, the two groups were rivals, but in a productive way: the Beach Boys' groundbreaking album "Pet Sounds" and the Beatles' equally groundbreaking "Sgt. Pepper's Lonelyhearts Club Band" continue to be debated regarding what influenced what, and which is the most influential album of the decade, in terms of future directions in rock songs, production, and performance. The truth is that both groups took their inspiration from artists of the 50s and early 60s, including Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, and others. The signature "doo wop" sound many groups used evolved in the post-WW2 era (1945 and after), especially during the 1950s. It was street music, originally black kids hanging out on street corners in urban areas, then other urban kids, especially Italian and Jewish guys from immigrant families. But doo wop's roots are in black gospel music from as far back as the 1920s. One great doo wop group of the 60s -- and probably the last one to make it big before the genre ceased to be a separate category -- was one of the only other American bands to compete with the Beatles for the top spots on the American pop charts of the decade, the Four Seasons. Your checking out The Beach Boys??? Way to go! One of the best groups of all time. If you like this song, then you should check out their song Good Vibrations. Like The Beatles, The Beach Boys experimented with different sounds and instruments to produce unique sounds in their music. Other songs if you interested are Surfin' USA, Help Me Rhonda, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Little Deuce Coupe, Sloop John B., When I Grow Up, Little Surfer Girl, In My Room, Don't Worry Baby, California Girls (one of their most well known songs), and Kokomo (from the movie soundtrack Cocktail starring Tom Cruise in 1988!) You might have heard Kokomo as well because they play this one a lot on the radio and on commercials. So glad you are expanding your music knowledge. Music from the 50's and 60's help shape what modern music is today. Still, I like the old stuff a lot more because it's just good music! Enjoy the music!
I love hearing my mum share her experience of seeing both the Beach boys and the Beatles when she was a teenager. She said the Beatles concert was like being stuck in a jar full of cicadas - all the screaming. You could not hear any of the music.
"I'm getting bugged driving up and down the same old strip, I gotta find a new place where the kids are hip"..... Sums up that endless summer boredom. A classic summer feel good song.
This song reminds me of my late father every time I hear it. Such great memories of us on road trips with this song blasting and my dad and I trying to harmonies along with it ❤️

Danced on stage to this song while The Beach Boys belted this out. Many moons ago. Can you imagine today they would throw you off stage. They were cool with it.
Great vid, thanks for posting! The Beach Boys/Jan & Dean just had that vibe and sound that you recognize right away. For all those younger folks who are into street racing and think it's a new thing.. amping up cars, etc, give a listen. Dead Man's Curve, Little Deuce Coop, Little Old Lady from Pasadena, and so on and so on. Great stuff and great memories! So happy you enjoyed it J!
Speaking of the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Supposedly the Beatles Rubber Soul album was the main influence for the Beach Boys Pets Sounds album which was then the influence for the Beatles Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album. So the Beatles and Beach Boys actually had an impact on each other.
Its not "Im a referee". Its "Im a real cool hit". Brian is the highest voice and the low voice is Mike Love. The Beach Boys are 3 brothers : Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson and their cousin Mike Love. Then theres Al Jardine, a friend from school. Ive loved their cool harmonies my whole life.
I get around: "Town to town" "I'm a real cool head" "I'm makin' real good bread" If you watch the old music video version of the song you can see Brian Wilson making hand movements when singing these lyrics.
I went down the Washington DC Mall and watched The Beach Boys,! We had a blast! 1973! Chicago, The Doobie Brothers and Jackson Brown all together! Unforgettable. Summer fun in the 70’s!
The Beach Boys' first number 1 hit waaaaaay back in 1964. It was huge because it toppled the then-dominating Beatles from the top spot on the Billboard charts. EDIT: Low notes are provided by Mike Love.
clapton said he quit the yard byrds, because he didn't want to be second best at 'teenage music'when he wanted to be best at blues guitar;and he knew the yard byrds werent gonna do someting like i get around. jagger also sincerely praised on t.v. it was very unique sonding to 1964 ears,
The Beatles may be my favorite group of all-time, mainly for their song-writing and charisma, but they can't touch the harmonies of my 2nd favorite group, The Beach Boys.
The sound of summer. . You're hearing three brothers and their best friend. Many years of harmonizing made a tight style that sounded like nothing else. Much like CSNY a few years after them, the Beach Boys' voices meshed into a unique unit that was widely loved as the signature sound of Southern California in the early to mid-60's. Sun, surf, sand.
Brian Wilson is a harmony genius. Beatles and Beach Boys had a friendly rivalry. Brian loved the Beatles album Rubber Soul so much he wanted to create an album of that caliber. So Brian created Pet Sounds, which in turn inspired the Beatles to create Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts club Band.
Not only a friendly rivalry, but some real friendships as well. Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney remain very good friends to this day. Mike Love and George Harrison were also good friends, as were Bruce Johnston and John Lennon.
This song makes me super happy!! And this song is vocal heavy and pulls you in. You can't help but to replay bits or the whole song. So glad you liked it too
This is the first song on the album “All Summer Long.” That was one of the first albums in my collection as a kid! It was my mom’s, and she let me have it because I played it so often! There’s a great motorcycle song on it called “Little Honda” that I loved so much! I later got my own little Honda 🏍 and I used to ride around and sing that song. 🎶 first gear, it’s alright, second gear, I’ll lean right, third gear, hang on tight, faster, it’s alllriiiiight... 🎶 !!! 😂
Great review, great band a lot of good music. Another band you might want to check out is the Ventures, "Wipeout" "Pipeline" & the theme song from "Hawaii 5-0" are the ones I remember, Instrumentals(might contain 1-2 words), beach sound was huge in the 60's.
Beach Boys in the USA at the same time as The Beatles in Great Britain. "Good Vibrations" one of the best songs ever. Many happy times spent dancing to the Beach Boys.
Yessss Jay, I'm loving your reactions to the Beach Boys, one of my favorite groups of all time. "In My Room "and "God Only Knows " are beautiful selections you would enjoy.
The "Best of the Beach Boys Sounds of Summer" and "Endless Summer", those 2 albums have most, not all but most of their best music. All their music transports me back to my teens, I lived 10-15 minutes from the beach growing up. Two of the lesser known gems I can never hear enough of is "Getcha Back" and "Good Timing". Great stuff.
I'm a referee????? What? I love seeing the happiness in this man's face from hearing my favorite band. To answer your question, lead vocalist Mike Love handles bass lines. Above him is Rhythm guitarist Al Jardine, followed by Dennis Wilson on drums, Carl "Lead Guitar" Wilson gets up to some very high notes but bassist/pianist/songwriter/arranger/producer Brian Wilson hits the falsetto. The Beach Boys started in September 1961. The Beatles invaded in 1964
A little less known song of theirs is “Surf’s Up”, the version on the “Smile Sessions” album. It’s full of demos for a super ambitious album that never ended up being finished, but Surf’s Up sounds full and amazing, like the way the Beatles transitioned into the next stages of their sound. Super cool shtuff
This song is one of my earliest memories of childhood. I was always blown away by it, I remember hearing the school orchestral band doing a cover of it in the auditorium, and feeling almost emotional. It’s a fun song but also just so beautiful. I’m so glad I was exposed to this great music at such a young age
The bass harmonies are Mike Love, who is also the nasal-sounding lead singer. He would sing the verses in his upper range, then drop into the bass part on the harmonies. The high falsetto is Brian Wilson.
LOVED your reaction to this one! Though Wiki may be wrong, it says The Beatles started in Liverpool in 1960, and The Beach Boys came the next year, in 1961. If you listened to their music a lot (like a lot of us did back in the 60's, hearing them on the radio) it didn't take long to recognize their sound. They DEFINITELY had a different sound from any of the groups of that time. In fact, I hadn't heard much of anything from them, myself, from the 70's to the 80's, but when their song "Kokomo" came out (from the movie "Cocktail") I knew INSTANTLY who was singing it. You should DEFINITELY check out "Kokomo," as well. It's a GREAT, feel good song. Thanks for another wonderful reaction! You NEVER disappoint us!
Spectacular song. Beach Boys started in ‘61. Beatles came to America in ‘64. Mike Live sings the verses and the low parts. Brian is the high falsetto on the chorus.

Catch a Wave and You're Sittin on Top of the World.....
Which was also the tune used in sidewalk surfin' by Jan & Dean
My little brother used to surf. I miss him. He was so funny.💙💙💙
Not just a fad cause it's been goin on so long
Best vocal riff ever
I love hearing my mum share her experience of seeing both the Beach boys and the Beatles when she was a teenager. She said the Beatles concert was like being stuck in a jar full of cicadas - all the screaming. You could not hear any of the music.
It was your reaction and what you had to say that finally pushed me to like this. It made me smile.
"I'm getting bugged driving up and down the same old strip,
I gotta find a new place where the kids are hip".....
Sums up that endless summer boredom.
A classic summer feel good song.
This song reminds me of my late father every time I hear it. Such great memories of us on road trips with this song blasting and my dad and I trying to harmonies along with it ❤️
"Help me Rhonda", 'Surfing USA" , some other good listening by The Beach Boys
You're going to love "When I Grow Up to Be Man", also by the Beach Boys!
"I Get Around" is probably Brian Wilson's best song 'hook,' but the Beach Boys album, "Pet Sounds" was his masterpiece.
Excellent choice of theirs. Thanks. Have a double album on vinyl still of theirs.
@@daddybog7189 sweet. Yep just one. I liked them, but just into other bands back then. If I'd had known back then how classic our vinyls would be one day, i would have invested more than the 110 vinyls I have lol.
I love your good nature. It adds to the joy of re-experiencing the first time I heard a song when I was much younger. Thank you.
My first concert! So much fun to listen to. As I got older, I learned to appreciate the musical genius, but in high school I just enjoyed them pure and simple. California Girls!
I met one of the beach boys after a show in sarasota on February 18th of this year
Beatles and Beach Boys were contemporaries. Two unique, genius sounds. Love them both.
You make me appreciate this band more thanks for your reaction.
Absolutely LOVE the Beach Boys! Anything by them would be great........ Feel good music, lifts you every time. 😁
" I'm a real cool head, I'm makin' real good bread"...
Surf Rock is an underrated genre in today's music industry, guys like Dick Dale and The Beach Boys were amazing
It all started from beach parties, surfing, 🌞. Beach dancing.
One of my first albums was Beach Boys back at six years old. My dad picked it up for me at a garage sale and I had no idea how magical it would be.
I get around:
"Town to town"
"I'm a real cool head"
"I'm makin' real good bread"
If you watch the old music video version of the song you can see Brian Wilson making hand movements when singing these lyrics.
I went down the Washington DC Mall and watched The Beach Boys,! We had a blast! 1973! Chicago, The Doobie Brothers and Jackson Brown all together! Unforgettable. Summer fun in the 70’s!
This is classic surf music...it doesn't age! It sounds as fresh as it did when they released it; all due to the genius of Brian Wilson!
So glad you liked it too
My favourite song by the beach boys
This is the first song on the album “All Summer Long.” That was one of the first albums in my collection as a kid! It was my mom’s, and she let me have it because I played it so often! There’s a great motorcycle song on it called “Little Honda” that I loved so much! I later got my own little Honda 🏍 and I used to ride around and sing that song. 🎶 first gear, it’s alright, second gear, I’ll lean right, third gear, hang on tight, faster, it’s alllriiiiight... 🎶 !!! 😂
Now you have to buy a surf board Jay... love it!! Great kids from Hawthorne, California.
Great review, great band a lot of good music. Another band you might want to check out is the Ventures, "Wipeout" "Pipeline" & the theme song from "Hawaii 5-0" are the ones I remember, Instrumentals(might contain 1-2 words), beach sound was huge in the 60's.
interesting you point that out, great observation... beatles and beach boys respected each other highly and tried to one up each other on each album
Love your reactions to this amazing tune---The Beach Boys are Sunshine in any weather
Help Me Rhonda, Little Old Lady From Pasadena are two more BB songs to check out.
Now you’re talkin my language... “deep ass voice”! 🤣🤣 ❤️ Fun song, great reaction!
Don't forget your hyphen (unless you are really talking about an ass voice which is deep).
I love seeing the smile slowly spread on your face !
A great song. wish it was longer too
Love the 60s
The Beatles and Beach Boys were together years before they made it big. The Beach Boys made it big 1st around 1962, the Beatles in 1963.
In My Room!
Great songs and performances will move you. Perfect example right here. This is pure joy.
Their music was infectious. Couldn't get it out of your mind.
One of the most iconic songs of the entire 1960s!
Just seeing you take a moment out and appreciating it instead of disregarding it just because it’s old...
Awesome just awesome.
Love the beach boys,great harmonies!!
J, he's not a referee, he's a real cool head makin' real good bread!
