The crack studio musicians on this were called The Wrecking Crew, and they played on thousands of Albums in the 50’s and 60’s. The Beachboys had literally dozens of hits in the early/ mid 60’s. Bright guitar sound…..became known as the California surfing sound. Between The Beachboys, Motown, and the early British INvasion bands, led by the Beatles and The Stones, you had the radio Top 40;pretty much covered for several years.
Great reaction! Can never go wrong with The Beach Boys...especially when they're giving good vibrations! HIGHLY recommend: Don't Worry Baby (great song about a guy needing reassurance from his love about a car race!); I Get Around; Surfer Girl; In My Room...so many amazing hits!
The first tape(yes, I grew up before CDs) that I ever owned was a Beach Boys hits album. I got it for my 4th birthday along with a Walkman, and I played it until it wore out. I still love them. They will always hold a special place in my heart. They were like my musical first love.
The Beachboys were GREAT driving music….always a happy, grooving’ sound. When I think of driving around with the radio blaring back then, Its always the song, Help Me Rhonda that comes to mind. Or, I Get Around.
I was born in ‘66 and my sisters were in high school. The Beach Boys, Mamas And The Papas.....the list goes on. My house was filled with this music. Anything The Wrecking Crew was part of.....the sound was there. Great vid guys
This was 1 helluva great song, Brian Wilsons absolute next level advanced music even the beatles were in awe at the time of release on the "Pet Sounds" album.
One thing that made this song different for the times and changed pop music was that the song had multiple movements, like classical music pieces. The Beatles did it soon after, partly as a reaction to this. Another great surf song with multiple movements like this was Beach Baby by the British(!!!) group First Class.
Good Vibrations is their most critically acclaimed song for sure. They have about 50 major hits. My favorite is God Only Knows. Their Pet Sounds album is rated #1 by many publications. Rolling Stone has it at #2 behind Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On.' This is genius level stuff. About 50 years ahead of its time. Brian Wilson wrote, produced, and taught all of the music. Cousin Mike Love helped with the early song lyrics. Their song library is worth over 100 million dollars. The Beatles tried to copy Pet Sounds and were heavily influenced. The Beatles had George Martin to produce and create all of the creative (strange) stuff. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison shared writing duties. Brian did it all. Listen to Pet Sounds. It's Brian's masterpiece. McCartney calls God Only Knows the greatest song ever written. I agree. Surfin USA is a cool song... but not close to their best. Another must listen is Surf's Up. Really... no one has caught up to Brian Wilson. Wouldn't It Be Nice... Sloop John B... Good Timin'... Darlin'... In My Room... Surfer Girl... I Get Around... Fun, Fun, Fun... Do It Again... the list is endless. If they were all still alive... they could play 3 concerts in one night... all recognizable hits... all entertaining... without repeating a song. That's how massive the library is. A very unknown album favorite is called Friends. The song Friends is very unique. There's one false rumor that floats around about Phil Spector producing the Beach Boys. That is absolutely false. It was all Brian Wilson. I enjoyed your review of Good Vibrations. Radio stations didn't know what to do with it.
Good analysis. I appreciate the way you express yourselves so clearly about the music. Brian Wilson was a fan of The Four Freshmen. Their harmonies laid the foundation for the Beach Boys --plus the genius of Brian.
Saw them in March of this year and they are still awesome. Mike Love is about 72 and still sounds the same. If you have a chance to see them live, it's a great time!
The first session for the song took place on Feby17, 1966, and finished on September 21, 1966. There were at least 9 sessions for the song sprinkled throughout the year, as Brian had to concentrate on making the album Pet Sounds, which was released in May of that year and this song in October 1966.
Love, love LOVE the Beach Boys. Dennis was SOOOO good looking (major crush back in the day), even though they were a bit before my time (I was 13 when Dennis died in '83). Their song "In My Room" got me through a lot of rough days during my teenage years.
They have SO many wonderful songs, please check out more of their songs. From 1962 to 1979, Brian Wilson wrote or co-wrote more than two dozen U.S. Top 40 hits for the Beach Boys.
This song brought the term "good vibrations' into popular use as slag for good feelings. Then it was shortened to "vibrations' and finally, still used today, "vibe or vibes" ☺, PJ
Both of you were feeling those “Good Vibrations”!!!!!!! Classic Beach Boys song….. a great catalog of great “beach vibe” music!!!!!! Keep the great “vibrations “ coming!!!!! Love ❤️ your channel guys…
14 when this came out. And the best hits of all time just kept coming when I grew up. What a great time to be a teen in the 70’s. The best real musicianship! You had to be there to understand. Glad you appreciate good music. Those videos were added much later of course.
Possibly the most creative song ever written in the pop-rock world. So many fabulously creative songs from the mind of Brian WIlson: "The Little Girl I Once Knew," "God Only Knows," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Add Some Music to Your Day," "From There to Back Again," "Sail Away," "Cool, Cool Water," "Surf's Up," and lots of solo records, too. Nobody like Brian in the history of music.
Great reaction Sam and Phil! The original California surfing/beach music group . I saw them in Toronto during one of their tours in the mid-70s. Great sounding live!
Brian Wilson was one of a few music pioneers who took us from 1950s Pop & Doo-wop sound to modern electric rock. Del Shannon was there a little earlier as well.
The spacey sound in this song was an instrument called the Electro-Theremin . You here it almost in solo at the very end of the song . The Pet Sounds album was considered to be a most influential album . Side note , the theremin was used in the Star Trek theme music .
I grew up in LA and loved the Beach boys. Once my best friend and I skipped school and went to the beach where we found the Beach Boys performing live! Next video watch a live performance. I loved seeing you enjoying them!
The funny thing about the Beach Boys is that with the exception of the drummer (who had some odd experiences, like hanging around with Charles Manson) they were not surfers. Brian Wilson was the songwriter and he was convinced that surf music would sell. But he kind of evolved from writing about surfing, to writing about cars, to writing about girls. But he finally got tired of aiming his music at teenagers, and sent the rest of the band to tour Japan without him, and while they were gone he laid down the music for Pet Sounds, a much more adult album (and the album that Paul McCartney credited with inspiriing Sergeant Pepper). The band returned and laid down the vocal tracks, but was not happy about the change in direction (or the decreased sales that went with it). Wilson then created Good Vibrations, using multitracking to a degree that had not been done before, as part of what was supposed to be his masterpiece, Smile. Unfortunately, he had some serious mental health issues, and Smile wasn't finished during the sixties, and their greatest hits kind of ended there (with the exception of Kokomo, which I don't think Wilson had much to do with). Close to 40 years later Wilson would put out Smile as a solo project.
I went to a Beach Boys concert in Giants stadium in the 80s. Sold out crowd. Major party. So many kids were singing all the words to every song it was difficult to hear the band. After a while nobody cared because it was a party. What a party!
Hey Phil and Sam, in reference to your request for more Beach Boys songs, here's a few I'd recommend: Kokomo Wouldn't It Be Nice California Girls I Get Around
This was Brian Wilson’s masterpiece after Pet Sounds….and his obsession….he had been taking a lot of LSD…and getting all kinds of ideas about how he wanted everything to sound and be arranged…..not only driving the rest of The Beach Boys crazy, but also the group of studio musicians who were known as “The Wrecking Crew”…..not just this song but that period of time. (This is to the best of my recollection)
You mentioned the great.bass line. That was done by Carol Kaye, a member of the famous Wrecking Crew studio players, and one of the most recorded Bassists in history. Keep in mind that she was a top studio musician in the 50’s and 60’s and played bass….,highly unusual for that time. She was a Trail Blazer in that respect, a,though she would probably reject that title….she was just doing her job….a gal accepted as “one of the boys” back in the day.
Brian Wilson stopped touring, so while the band was on tour, Brian Wilson stayed behind and created the album Pet Sounds. Arguably the best album of all time.
I can believe how people never heard of beach boys music. Pet sounds, greatest ever. Surfing usa was one of the original. Beach boys were the original. Beatles love their music and wanted to capture their sound
I've known this song since it was new but this is the first time I've ever seen the video so I wasn't disappointed that you didn't watch it. It didn't seem to have much to do with the song anyway. Keep in mind that music videos weren't really a thing until MTV came out in the 80s. The fact that there is a video from back then actually surprises me. The closest we came to music videos in the 60s and 70s was the TV series, "The Monkees" or a couple Beetles' films which you had to go to a theater to see.
My group of friends were in Tahoe to see them and were on the same floor. Carl Wilson came out onto the hall and was talking to one of my group. He came in our room and visited for anout 30 mins. I had broke my leg and he asked if he could sign my cast!! So very nice
Surfin' USA is good, but is topped by not only Good Vibrations, but also God Only Knows...which is often quoted as being the GOAT of all pop songs. Weird video to go with this song; the Monkees have a lot to answer for.
If you want more of this psychedelic sound from them, check out the "Smile Sessions", far too much to explain in one comment, but it was a failed project of theirs from 1967 that was revived and finished by Brian Wilson in 2004 as a solo album, the sessions released in 2011 and follow his track listing. If you still want a psychedelic sound, but more oriented towards classical music, give their album "Pet Sounds" from 1966 a try. Many consider it to be the second greatest album of all time and it was highly influential in the music industry, inspiring the Beatles to put out Sgt. Pepper's. And then if you want something that's more easy listening, simple, and nostalgic-sounding, give any of their pre Pet Sounds albums a try. Obviously there's more material past the 60's, but most of it is past their peak artistic ability as a band when they had fallen on hard times. Exceptions to this include Sunflower (1970), Surf's Up (1971), Holland (1973), and Love You (1977). Anyway, enough rambling, great reaction, they're my #1 favorite band!
20/20 (1969) is one of the strongest post-Pet Sounds albums. Some of their finest music is from the 70s as those albums you listed prove. An underrated one is Light Album (1979).
@@bookhouseboy280 20/20 is a great album too, I should've included that as well. However, I personally don't particularly like L.A. (Light Album). I might need to give it another listen, but it just didn't really click with me as a whole and I felt like the track listing could have been arranged a little better. I think "Here Comes The Night" should have been cut down with the near eleven minute version released as a single and also not placed in the middle of the album. On a positive note, I remember "Good Timin'" and "Lady Lynda" not being too bad. Those are just my brief criticisms, but if you like it, all the more power to you!
That synth-like spacey sound was a theremin, an electronic instrument invented by Leon Theremin in 1928. The performer never contacts the instrument, and the pitch is determined by the position of hands placed between two antennas.
Back in the day they used to sponsor a drag race car (Camaro). After a race down the track they would follow in the back of pickup waving at the crowd. I went to several they attended at Tulsa International Raceway. Yet another thing to like about them. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
The strange futuristic sounding instrument was an electrotheremin. Similar in sound to a theremin but easier to play. It was used in a lot of science fiction movies in the 60's and 70's.
Great reaction. The Beach Boys have some great songs worth a reaction. "Sloop John B" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are two I'd seriously consider for you next by them. The video gave me a Monkees feel. You might consider reacting to them at some point. Either the Theme song from their TV show, or "Pleasant Valley Sunday" would be a nice starting point for them.
This song should have been on the "Pet Sounds" album, which is nothing but a love letter to show Brian Wilson's musical talent..as that's what it does. Then again, they held the song back because they wanted it perfect before release. and I believe they did just that.
You guys have just scratched the surface of Beach Boy's music. I think I have as many BB songs on my phone as I do Beatles and like Beatle's songs each song is distinctly different. No two songs sound alike although they all have that BB vibe. One of my favorites is Little Deuce Coup. It's a simple song with a killer intro. 👍
Interesting fact..Brian Wilson was (is) such a perfectionist that he used The Wrecking Crew on pretty much all the Beach Boys recordings. Of course the actual band members knew how to play and did play at all live performances but because he needed the recordings to be perfect he didn't want to waste time and money recording what he deemed to be mediocre. Great documentary on the Wrecking Crew I would recommend any music enthusiast to watch. I think most people would be surprised to see how many music groups used the Wrecking Crew for all their recordings. Too many to mention. Something else I have just discovered is that most of these music videos we are listening to today have been auto tuned and "tweaked". Not really hearing anything the way we heard it back in the good old days, you know the 60's, 70's and even the 80's. Back when music was music. Thought it was interesting one of your reactions I listened to talked about synthesizers. Not sure they were used much before the Cars. You gotta check out the Cars. Moving in Stereo if you want to hear synthesizers.
In this period of the mid-1960s, The Beatles and The Beach Boys were vying for the top of the charts. Seeing The Beatles gain the upper hand, songwriter Brian Wilson crumbles under the pressure. He then falls into silence, locks himself in his room and stays there for months. The other members of the band find it difficult and feel abandoned. Suddenly, Wilson emerges from his isolation with several complete compositions in his hands. Wilson plays them to the other members who can't believe their ears. It's a totally renewed sound, a more complex orchestration and more mature, deeper lyrics. No more surf music. Wilson wants to transmit his vision of the world, of human and transcendent realities. First, the others refuse such a revolution; they believe this change will end their popularity. Wilson persists and convinces them. Too many songs for a single album, they will record two in quick succession: "PET SOUNDS" (1966) and "SMILEY SMILE" (1967). In the first, we find the song "God Only Knows" and in the second: "Good Vibrations". The Beatles will say that these are two great albums and that "PET SOUNDS" is the best of all the albums ever conceived and produced in the whole history of rock. As for "God Only Knows", Paul McCartney will not hesitate to say that it is the most beautiful song to have been written, played and sung.
Both Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson have stated that there was a period of time where their bands (The Beatles and The Beach Boys) not only took inspiration from the other band's albums, but then tried to do even better than the other. It led to some unbelievable albums.

Good vibrations was their biggest hit. Must be listened to from start to finish to fully appreciate the new form it established in pop music.
The Beatles were really impressed with the Beach Boys and considered them competition.
Yeah right
Who cares , they were both good bands , why does everything have to a competition with you people , just enjoy good music , like I do 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You are correct. It was a friendly competition. Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper. Smile would have been for Magical Mystery Tour.
Not smile.
@@Bertie22222are you serious?
This is the Beach Boys' best song.
"God only knows" is their most beautiful song.
Dennis Wilson (drummer) was the only surfer in the band.
My favorite song from the Beach Boys was "I Get Around"! I had the 45 back in the day and had to use a penny taped on the arm above the needle!😎😎
“God only knows”. Please listen to it. It’s fantastic.
Good analysis. I appreciate the way you express yourselves so clearly about the music.
Brian Wilson was a fan of The Four Freshmen. Their harmonies laid the foundation for the Beach Boys --plus the genius of Brian.
My favourite of the Beach boys is a great track called Sloop John B.
Me too.
Saw them in March of this year and they are still awesome. Mike Love is about 72 and still sounds the same. If you have a chance to see them live, it's a great time!
He is 82 actually which makes it even more impressive.
I am 42 and love the beach boys, I still remember as a kid, getting a beach boys tape for Christmas, the one with Kokomo on it
14 when this came out.
Probably my favorite song of theirs- amazing production.
Great reaction Sam and Phil! The original California surfing/beach music group . I saw them in Toronto during one of their tours in the mid-70s. Great sounding live!
Younger self driving by the San Francisco beach. To cold to surf in San Francisco. I think its my favourite Beach Boy's song.
Heroes & Villains will forever be stuck in my head.
I grew up in LA and loved the Beach boys. Once my best friend and I skipped school and went to the beach where we found the Beach Boys performing live!
Next video watch a live performance.
I loved seeing you enjoying them!
A very good complex arrangement!
Takes me right back to a 12/13yr old mid-sixties,in London.
A magical time believe me.
It actually took 9 months to just write also nice job. Brian Wilson the brains with such talented guys with great harmonies
9 months and $25000. Pretty wild amount in 1960s dollars
My god I'm glad I lived through this fabulous music America you contributed so much just like us in England thank you ❤❤
The funny thing about the Beach Boys is that with the exception of the drummer (who had some odd experiences, like hanging around with Charles Manson) they were not surfers.
Great reaction. Brian Wilson was the heart and soul of The Beach Boys. He was a little different, but that was a good thing. Thanks again.
I went to a Beach Boys concert in Giants stadium in the 80s. Sold out crowd. Major party. So many kids were singing all the words to every song it was difficult to hear the band. After a while nobody cared because it was a party. What a party!
Y'all are great. I was 16 when they came in the scene. Amazing. This music can change your musical world.
Been listening to this song for 57 years . Never tired of it.
Hey Phil and Sam, in reference to your request for more Beach Boys songs, here's a few I'd recommend:
Kokomo
Wouldn't It Be Nice
California Girls
I Get Around
This was Brian Wilson’s masterpiece after Pet Sounds….and his obsession….he had been taking a lot of LSD…and getting all kinds of ideas about how he wanted everything to sound and be arranged…..not only driving the rest of The Beach Boys crazy, but also the group of studio musicians who were known as “The Wrecking Crew”…..not just this song but that period of time.
(This is to the best of my recollection)
"Surfin' USA" is Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" with new lyrics and Beach Boys harmonies.
I love their ‘Kokomo’ from the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂💩
Surf and car music got them started and then became the anomaly.
I can believe how people never heard of beach boys music. Pet sounds, greatest ever. Surfing usa was one of the original. Beach boys were the original. Beatles love their music and wanted to capture their sound
I was 12 when this came out. Even then when I first heard it I knew it was unique. That something was changing in music.
I grew up in the 1970s and when I was a kid I thought of this as "the Sunkist song" because they used it in the late 70s
So many hits and so respected.
Brian Wilson. Lead vocal/ falsetto, lyricist, bass guitar, producer, arrangements. Music genius.
Check out the album "Pet Sounds"
Such a masterpiece! You've got to listen to it enough times that you know when the transitions are coming. Then you really get the experience.
one of the most masterful songs of all time
One of the best groups ever! They had so many hit songs. Check out more of their songs.
This isn't a song. It's a prayer.
The strange futuristic sounding instrument was an electrotheremin. Similar in sound to a theremin but easier to play. It was used in a lot of science fiction movies in the 60's and 70's.
On the Star Trek original TV show theme song!
When Paul McCartney heard this, he said it scared him how good it was
Beach boys were the first groups to add different instruments to their songs
Great Reaction To This Great Classic Song, Guy's
My fave BB track is "This Whole World". Real short but the vocals can't be beat.
The Four Seasons group came around the same time.
They started out as a garage band in Hawthorne CA. In the early 60's.
Both Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson have stated that there was a period of time where their bands (The Beatles and The Beach Boys) not only took inspiration from the other band's albums, but then tried to do even better than the other.
It led to some unbelievable albums.
