This was a re watch...hadn't seen you do your theremin copy...was amazing! lol So glad I came back and watched again. :)
The device played by Mike Love (beard) is an electro-theremin, a device intended to reproduce the sound of a theremin but make it more controllable by direct touch rather than hand movements. 👍
I have read so many comments that the device was a theremin. I knew that was wrong because the player was touching it. a couple of days ago I decided to research this. Besides electro-theremin the device can be referred to as a "tannerin" - named after the inventor.
Sounds like Alien sounds 👽
Brian Wilson’s masterpiece. One of their finest songs. Often referred to as a pocket symphony.
Sir all these years never heard that term "" Pocket Symphony "" but that sounds perfect, Thank You. 🎷🎹🎸
Never heard that term. But on December 26,1966 I took the dollar bill Grandma had gave me for Christmas put it in my “pocket”and walked down to the Ben Franklin, AKA The Five and Dime Store. There I bought my very first record. The 45 record of Good Vibrations by Beach Boys.
If VoicePlay ever covers Good Vibrations they need to have Maggie sing the theramin part
😂absolutely!
HOLY CRAP!!! I have never heard anyone SING that theremin part before!!! To say I'm impressed is the understatement of the year.
Absolutely beautiful job of mimicking the Theremin. Your voice is amazing and that shows excellent pitch variation. The Physics of Theremins is truly incredible and I would suggest to anyone that investigating them is worthwhile.
The song does not technically contain a theremin. The song actually features a similar-sounding instrument invented by Paul Tanner called an Electro-Theremin.
One of The Beach Boys' many, many masterpieces. The production, harmonies, and soundscapes are just so rich and complex. Completely paved the way for decades of later pop music. Pet Sounds is often in the conversation for the greatest album of the rock era. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows are two of the most beautiful, most perfect songs ever written. This particular song was released on the album after Pet Sounds that Brian Wilson had intended to be his magnum opus that was never finished as intended (the released album Smiley Smile was initially a flop, but has since become an influential critical and cult favorite). Still, this song stands as a testament to what could've been.
The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" One of the greatest of all time. Beautiful harmonies. They took months perfecting it. Now imagine those harmonies in a Chicago song. See them live with Chicago ---->Terry Kath and Chicago, "Wishing You Were Here", '74 New Year's Rockin' Eve
The picture on this album cover is not of the Beach Boys. These guys have always been one of my favorite groups from the beginning of their run and many of the songs I learned early on with my guitar were from their albums.
Yeah, the picture on her video thumbnail is of my tribute band, Good Vibrations...lol. Flattering though.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that that is not a picture of the Beach Boys.
@@unclephil7650 I noticed it too but I thought it was me being wrong not her.
Another great song of theirs is "God Only Knows" a very, very tender love song
A masterpiece by Brian Wilson, especially when you remember the lack of digital and any technical wizardry of the time.
Thats what makes it so great. They were limited yet made the most with what they had
The Beach Boys practically founded the surf music genre along with others like Jan & Dean. They also influenced the Beatles. By the time one of my best friend's sons was 5 years old, he already knew almost all the Beach Boys songs and could sing them.
YEs, one of the few songs that Paul McArtney said he wishes he wrote was , "God only Knows"..
I saw Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds 50th anniversary tour in 2016 down in St. Petersburg, FL. It was an amazing show that I'll never forget.
I saw Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds 50th anniversary tour in 2016 down in Auckland, New Zealand, a living genius leyend, amazing show!
You're now an official "good vibration" machine! HUUUGE band, fantastic catalog, Brian Wilson - genius! Thanks for your reaction.
The "hum-de-dahs" were not used in the released version. "The Pet Sounds Sessions" box set has Brian Wilson, in complete control in the studio, assembling the song. He knows exactly what he wants.
Another great song with Carl Wilson singing lead is 'I can hear music". Would love a reaction to that one.
Maggie, not only could you be a Theremin it is such a shame you missed the call they placed to your agent when they were recording this song!! You are all they needed to make this masterpiece perfection itself!!!
I am a musician and this is my fav BB song, (Kokomo #2, God only knows #3, In my room #4). I love the tempo, rhythm , & mood changes in this one. A far cry from their early "Get Around" days lol. Thanks for posting, Maggie!
Kokomo? 🤔
@@bobwoolerOriGinal yeah, man, love that song! 😀👍😄
Yeah I love Kokomo too, some fans hate it because of the Mike Love thing but I enjoy it
Out of The Beach Boys only one surfed, Denny, the drummer. Unfortunately he drowned in 1983. The Beach Boys were a fixture in my life growing up. I can remember my dad walking in my room and saying, "I can't believe I raise a kid to like the Beach Boys." He was a Beatles fan. Their song In My Room was my teen life.
Carol Kaye. (Historic bass player) came up with the bass line. The Wrecking Crew consisted of top session players including at times Leon Russell and Glen Campbell. Nice documentary on the Wrecking Crew is available. The Swampers in Muscle Shoals, the Funk Brothers at Motown, Booker T and the MG’s at Stax. Raise a glass for all of Carol’s contributions.
In old Hollywood movies, the theramim was often used to make make the sounds for spaceships/flying saucers.
It was originally criticized as over-produced, but it's still one of their signature songs.
Great selection Maggie!
Just one thing tho, I am not 100% sure about the photo above your right shoulder, I don't recognize any of the people as being " Beach Boys " but I could be wrong I often am. 😮
Dick Dale is credited with creating the surf genre. Dick played in the Frankie & Annette Beach movies. I grew up on this music.
Was fortunate to see Dick Dale in the 80’s when he came to Minneapolis. He played with thicker gauge strings that his fingers would be bleeding at the end of the night. One of the best concerts I went to.
I like that kind of music
When Paul McCartney heard the Beach Boy's (Pet Sounds) Album he knew The Beatles needed to up their game or be left behind. (Sergeant Pepper's) came out one year later.
Maggie! Did you know a year before this song was released another group named Jay & The Americans had a huge hit of their own called 'Cara Mia'. You will enjoy it as lead singer Jay Black features his OPERATIC vocals on this song. The song became a mainstream hit - hitting number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.
Their "Pet Sounds" album is considered one of the pivotal albums of all rock. Give a listen :)
This isn't the finally released hit, but it was getting there. Brian knew what he wanted; the "hum-de-hahs" were cut.
The Instrument you are asking about is a type of theremin called an Electro-theremin! It is a little different than a regular theremin in that it has additional control nobs that alter its sound.
It uses a ribbon controller that’s easier to wrangle that an actual Theremin.
Nice Maggie, I doubt there's any bad material from the Beach Boys. I've heard you hit high notes before, but you harmonizing with that theramin was very impressive. Thank you for bringing the Beach Boys out to me again, this was fun.
One of the greatest songs of all time. 2 things, though, 1. the photo is from a tribute band and not the real Beach Boys. 2. Listen to the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds in particular God only Knows.
Nice review. Heads up though, the band picture you used in your thumbnail isn't The Beach Boys, it's actually my tribute band from Las Vegas called Good Vibrations...lol. Flattering though..
A great classic by the beach boys! I love their music. Great use of the theramin here lol. Great job Maggie!
Maggie the most beautiful theremin in the world. From a square metal box to a Bright Angel Voice.
i can hear music is by far the best beach boys song, even though its not a original their vocals really elevate it.
Maggie is absolutely a theramin. Wow!
Thanks Brian Wilson for giving the world such a great song.
One of the most creative songs that you'll ever hear!!!😂
Who needs a Theremin when we have Maggie Renee!
This has been my favorite band since the early '70s. Timely video as I am about to pick up tickets for next months concert. Love it.
Great reaction Maggie! Your imitation of the theremin was downright perfect! So beautiful! 👍🏻
one of the classic easy rock songs of all time-all beach boys were relax and have fun type of music-great for parties (or a beach) as most people knew it and was not loud enough to drown out talking like hard rock could-great reaction
Uh, that picture is not the Beach Boys.
Best harmonies in the game.
First rock song to feature a Theramin . Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin also used one for Whole Lotta Love live at MSG. Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns also used for their song "Malaria" . That's kinda awesome human theramin 👍
Carl Wilson is "playing" bass here; it was top session bassist Carol Kaye in the studio; the studio version is featured here. Brian Wilson, who is absent here, played bass when he performed onstage with the group. Dennis Wilson was the group's drummer, but it was the late Hal Blaine on the studio track.
A great reaction maggie!!!
Theremin LOL Thank You - loved it - That made my day
yes! i thought so!!
The instrument is a theremin. Several music groups have used it and it was popular in some Post-WWII movies. One of my favorite musicians playing the theremin is Pamela Kurstin. The inventor of the Moog synthesizer had worked on theremins.
You might want to check out their original recording of In My Room followed by Tim Foust's a cappella solo version of it.
Mike Love is actually playing the Electro-Theremin, developed by trombonist Paul Tanner and amateur inventor Bob Whitsell in the late 1950s to produce a sound to MIMIC that of the theremin.
You've heard the Theremin a thousand times, it's pretty much the main instrument in the origins Star Trek theme song.
Wonderful reaction to . The Beach Boys had enormous impact on pop music. Apart from "Good Vibrations my favourite songs of theirs are
God Only Knows ("our song" for my wife and I)
Do It Again (really cool)
I Get Around (really reflected the times)
The Theremin was also used for the theme of Star Trek the original series.
All instruments on this recording were played by "The Wrecking Crew". A group of West Coast based studio musicians. Vocals by "The Beach Boys"
The explosions heard were created by drummer Hal Blaine. He put himself and a snare drum inside and elevator shaft and strung mics from the third floor to get the effect.
The theremin was an early electronic synthesizer and had been used a lot in b-movie sci-fi and horror flicks as a spooky sound effect. The Beach Boys took it and used it to create hauntingly beautiful and psychedelic sounds. Good Vibrations was actually the second time they used it in a song. The first was slightly earlier on their seminal album Pet Sounds on a track called I Just Wasn't Made For These Times. A more sombre reflective tune and completely different from this one...
The song does not technically contain a theremin. The song actually features a similar-sounding instrument invented by Paul Tanner called an Electro-Theremin. The Theremin is actually vertical antenna where the player moves their hands in free air between them, disturbing the signal between the two antenna,
At Brian Wilson's Kennedy Center Honors tribute, Art Garfunkel introduced the segment saying that when he first herd this song, he called Paul Simon to say he had just heard the best rock and roll song ever written. Arguably it is, it contains so many aspects of not only rock and roll, but blues, jazz and of course unique harmony in choir and single vocal realms.
Carol Kaye's bass line is killer! Bach would be proud!
OK Mags you hitting those notes at 7:55 sealed the deal - you're IN the band!
I don't know who those guys on that first album cover shown were, but it certainly wasn't the Beach Boys that I grew up with.
Your video picture is not The Beach Boys...???? Am I missing something? 😮
Hi Maggie ....Unfortunately you show a photo of a Beach Boys cover band in the upper left corner at 1:32 ... besides that ... good job !
The theriamen was used for the original star trek them song
Got to see them three times years ago. Always a fantastic show/ party ! Also you always crack me up.
The beach boys harmonies are amazing
Studio musicians (like Carol Kaye on bass) were featured on this recording.
Theremins were often used for making sound effects in the early sci-fi movies.
I dont like opera but i like her and the great songs she covers! You rock maggie!
That was so cool. You have real talent and I love The Beachboys too.
Maggie the Theremin !!! 🤩 Gosh I so enjoyed that... We all left with GOOD VIBRATIONS !!!
California Girls, is their song, and California dreaming was never covered by the beach boys. Lots of waves, girls, and cool cars. Brian used a THEREMIN (the spooky antennea like instrument, wired so that by waving something around it to get different pitches) Led Zeppelin used this in a rock context as well.
That's why the title is " Good Vibration " as i can see you feel the vibration in the song nice . Your dress goes very well with the beach boys , kind of California beach dress .
That instrument is a theremin, it uses electromagnetic fields to generate sound
Brian Wilson is a musical genius and Good Vibrations was 20 years ahead of its time.
A human theremin! This song's lyrics are so descriptive; along with the music changes it takes you on a sensory journey that just leaves you happy.
Maggie gets a job with the Danish Symphony Orchestera.
Not sure who are in the picture at 0:27?,one things for sure is definitely not The Beach Boys
If any group can be said to have challenged The Beatles for airplay supremacy and pushed them, it's The Beach Boys. Yes, they are that Important to music history.
Great analysis as always. The one instrument looks like a theremin, usually it isn't physically touched sounds are controlled by how you move your hands. I always thought they were an interesting futuristic sounding instrument.
🤗
My god, but you are absolutely cute as a button. Your facial expressions as you react to the song are wonderful. And the fact that you can imitate the sound of the instrument is just crazy.
And to think that the rest of the band aparantly had to be convinced to record this song.
You've gotten a hold of a slightly different mix here. That part in the middle, after where it slows down, is not on the official release. The "hum dee da" chant at 6:36 in this video. There's a bit added in the fade out too.
These guys were before my time but are my favorite lol.
"The siren within thee doth come forward, dear woman!" (don't stop)
Best vocals in pop music. So many brilliant songs. Try "Add Some Music to Your Day," "Cool Cool Water," "Surf's Up," and on and on. Easily one of the most influential bands of all-time. Brian is THE American Musical Genius of the Rock Era. This wasn't a Theremin -- it was an Electro-Theremin. Big difference, and the former you don't touch, making it hard to hit the correct pitches. This one you can't help but hit the right pitches.
Technically they used an Electronic Theremin, which is not a pure Theremin because (as you can see) they touch it. No physical contact is actually made with the instrument when playing a pure Theremin.
As for singing like a Theremin, people think the theme for the Original StarTrek was done on a Theremin, but it was actually an opera soprano named Loulie Jean Norman who sang 'the Theremin' part. In some later episodes they cut her part to save royalties payments but later restored her voice to the theme.
Whose picture is that? That's not the Beach Boys.
Surfin USA Is from the same band :)
As was "He was a Monkey's Uncle" for the Jerry Lewis movie.
I've been listening to the Beach Boys for 20 years when I'm feeling really bad. the music is just awesome.
I think they're performing here to the studio version, which featured top session musicians like Carol Kaye on bass and Hal Blaine on drums. Mike Love certainly didn't play the theremin.
Thanks for the expert analysis, Theremin-Maggie! Bur, where did you get the still photo of "Good Vibrations The Beach Boys" with 5 guys - none of whom are members of the Beach Boys???
That was next level, thank you
React to later Beach Boys, like "Add Some Music to Your Day," "From There to Back Again," "Cool, Cool Water," "Surf's Up," "Til I Die," and other wondrous songs that show off their incredible vocals and vocal arrangements, to say nothing of their stellar background tracks and productions. Some classical recordings requiring a Theremin (film scores) used a woman to create the sound. You are one GREAT Theremin! My soundtrack label employed a real one when we recorded a classic sci-fi score. We should have hired you.
This must be an extended version or album version. It's definitely not the radio version. Am I wrong?
The picture does not show the Beach Boys!!!
The picture shows a beach boys tribute band.
From 1:24 to 1:44
Look for the Beach Boys picture!
I really love this... one it's an oldie two it's great music too.
At the time of recording, this was the most expensive song recorded due to all the over dubs. Many say this was the birth of Progressive Rock.
Christmas 1966 I was a nine year old when my grandmother gave each us kids a dollar bill and pinned to Christmas tree. The very next day I stuck my bill in my pocket and walked to the Ben Franklin store (AKA the Five and Dime) where spent my dollar on the 45 record of this song making it my first ever record. I think I did good for my first purchase😊
