Hyundai places some big bets with its Ioniq Hybrid, the first of which is its promise of 55 miles per gallon. An all-electric model is available in California, and a plug-in hybrid will hit dealerships later this year. But fuel economy isn’t the Ioniq’s only selling point. Compared to the segment-leading Toyota Prius, the Hyundai looks and feels familiar-which should appeal to buyers who want an efficient hatchback, but don’t like the Prius’ futuristic styling.
The Ioniq’s transmission makes it more responsive than other hybrids. Instead of the single-gear electronic continuously variable transmission setup typical of hybrids, the Ioniq has a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. At speed, acceleration is linear and predictable, although I did notice some lag from a standing start. The Ioniq also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, giving it another advantage over the Prius. We look forward to seeing whether the Ioniq can take any sales from Toyota’s super-successful hybrid. Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/gH5Nb

I just got an Ioniq limited love it.
I don't feel any hesitation when starting , what I feel is a smooth quiet start which feels unsettling because we are so used to the engine roaring but it moves plenty fast.
It's a joy when slowly cruising through a crowded parking lot as the ride is purely electric and so quiet and smooth.
Storage ? I can put a tuba in the back.
Prius ? What's that ? Pay more for it ? Why ?

I get 61.7 MPG in my 2019 Hyundai Ionic Blue, which is awesome.
this it a good reviewer talks to the point👍👍👍
I've had a premium se for 6 months now and I love it
drove this today. and I loved it! Canada gas prices are equivalent to 5$ a gallon. and they will only go up as oil is 50 a barrel
Great review, keep it up!
Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.
Great review, Keith! I just recently conducted my full in-depth review of the all-new Ioniq Hybrid SEL, as well! I have to say, it definitely impressed me with the overall interior ergonomics and practicality.
Like you mentioned the Ioniq doesn't offer standard active safety features. Which could be a drawback for many.
Overall, you did a great job reviewing this Ioniq Hybrid! Keep up the great work! 👍

I love Kammbacks! Thanks for mentioning that car body style. I haven't heard an auto journalist say that in a long time. I used to own an Honda CR-Z, traded it for a Kia Soul, and might consider this as a replacement, since gas prices in Northern California are at $3.10/gal regular, and around $3.50/gal for premium.
A nice review of the car I do have a question though I just drove and ionic and had no issue at all putting my Feet Under the seats from the back seat. The one I drove was an SEL trim I wonder if there's some differences in the seats when you upgrade to the loaded model perhaps the power seat motors take up more space. Definitely drives better than the Prius I drove and feels more like a regular car and also doesn't look like a spaceship.
We bought our 19’ Ioniq hybrid limited about a month ago now. So far we’ve really been enjoying it. It’s been a real breath of fresh air going from driving a truck that averages 16-17 mpg to the Ioniq that’s averaging around 49 mpg. The hatchback allows us to put a surprisingly large amount of stuff in he rear especially with the rear seats folded. We chose the Ioniq over the Sonata because of the hatchback and of course the better mpg.
Now I’m hoping Hyundai will bring the Elantra GT sport with N appearance package to the states so I can buy one of those too. We’ve been really impressed with Hyundai so far.
How long are you driving these cars? I think it would take a while for the mpg to be accurate.
Good video review...
I bought the SEL with tech package and I get an average 55 mpg most of the time. Its great to have smart cruise control, blind spot warning rear cross traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking and it is definitely worth the extra grand you pay. The lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery is pretty sweet too. I love the way this car drives. Its quiet and saves gas which is inching up every day now at 64 bucks a barrel for oil. The new Prius is damned ugly unless your into transformers.
Don't you dare put transformers and that thing in the same category. There is no excuse for that ugly.
Dude but I bet your car is shit now. Why pay so much for a Hyundai then a Toyota
Although exterior looks are not all that important to me I do think the Ioniq is better looking than the Niro. It is actually pretty attractive to me.
As a nine-year Prius owner I don't think I'll be purchasing a Prius for our next car. Toyota has done some things to the new models which I really don't like. 1) Lower driver's seat position 2) White accents inside 3) Still has the centered gauge cluster which I've never liked. All of those things are improved in the Ioniq and Niro.
The exact mpg isn't a big deal to me. If I get 45+ I'm happy. Our other car is a 2005 4Runner that gets 13 mpg around town so the Prius, Ioniq or Niro would all be 3x better than that. At 45+ mpg our gas bill is relatively small, even at $4/gal.
Overall I like both the Ioniq and Niro. It is great to have a Prius alternative.
Looks good
Hyundai gets it . We're not all computer geeks .
I own an Ioniq SEL. I could not be happier. I have driven a Prius a few times and found it just too anemic entering a highway or passing. I found the Ioniq far superior in this regard. I love the way this car drives it is just comfortable and quiet; I could not be happier. As to steering, the reviewer is spitting hairs. If you want sports car handling buy a sports car like my spider 124. As to mileage, it really depends on where and how you drive. I live in the hills in Tennessee and there I average around 46 miles per gal. But when I am in FL or some place flat I average just over 50. Do not underestimate the value of the life time warranty on the battery. This insures your lower cost of ownership will not evaporate with a battery replacement. How a car looks to you is subjective but really I have to believe with most people the nod has to go to the Ioniq---by a long shot. Cargo space is very good. I traded my 2018 CRV in on the Ioniq. Before I did, I measured the the actual floor space with the seats down, in it and the Ioniq. Both the floor space, and the hatch opening width, were within a inch. Obviously because of height and body shape the Civic beat the Ioniq in overall cubic feet (around 10 cubic feet greater). But the point is in most type of loads the Ioniq fares pretty well in cargo space. Unless I would need to pack a load to the ceiling I can carry pretty much carry what I did with my 2018 CRV (also a great vehicle). Bottom line: more bang for your buck with a Ioniq compared to Prius.
I am curious as to how your miles per gallon is now? I have had a Prius for the last 2 years. I would say the first year or so I averaged 45 to 47 miles per gallon, I can now average 52 to 53 and it's all based on how I drive. Wondering if you figured out how to get better MPG as well
Samsung was never a Sony killer, it was a Sony alternative, well look how that one turned out. If Toyota keeps making cars designed by some origami experts, you will see Hyundai kills Toyota someday.
I think you spelled Nokia wrong ;)

LG could be a Samsung killer, I have my 42 inch HD TV in my room which is now 10 years old and still running.
Guys, don't listem to the mpg numbers hes saying. I have the sel trim and my mpg ranges based on road conditions(like alot of stop lights or uphill/ long straight roads). My mpg ranges from 49-62.
Agreed, In my SEL I get between 55 and 61 without even trying. My wife just hops in the car and goes and routinely averages 55+. This is one great car. Very enjoyable driving in urban setting but holds its own on the road also.
Dials, knobs, buttons! I drive an '04 Mazda 3 and I think the whole touch volume pads found in quite a few modern cars would irk the shit outta me.
The Hyundai Ioniq is among my list of cars that I consider buying, and it’s the only hybrid car I would consider. Apart from the gas mileage, it beats the Prius I’m having Apple Car Play and Android Auto, it’s a bit more engaging to drive than the Toyota, and its 100,000 mile/10 year warranty plus lifetime warranty of its battery it’s unbeatable. And extra bonus the Ioniq doesn’t look weird and over-styled like the Prius.
Henry E. You're already Prius owner ? so why switch ?
How tall is he?
Hammer 17 centimeter. You can read his user manual🤣
This guy is good presenter
Anyone else worry about that duel clutch automatic?
Not really. Hyundai has done some interesting things will it, including having the car in gear when you are stopped. They can do this because the transmission is directly connected to the electric motor, and the car will start from being stopped with the electric motor. Because of this, you don't get slippage (which causes most wear) when trying to clutch in the transmission to the motor. Of course, it also helps that you have the 100,000 mile warranty just in case there is some issue.
As a Focus owner, this is one of my main concerns with this car...
If the gears are to fight between them ... it may become worrying yes.
Its actually a neat looking thing. Somewhat similar shape with the old Prius, but way more refined.
I want the EV version
Its been a year since this review. Gas prices are beginning to climb. With all the problems in the middle east it's not unreasonable to think gas could hit $4/gal rather quickly.
All those folks driving gas guzzlers are going to be unhappy spending a days wages to fill their gas tank.
It’s pronounced like Sunday “hun-day”
So why should one NOT choose the made-in-Japan, 20-year-track-record Prius but go with Ioniq ? just to save few hundred ?
Looks Way better than the Toyota Prius
The toyota prius looks like crap that is why their sales suck. I purchase the hyundia ioniq the first day it arrived in the dealers. The vehicle drives and handles much better than the prius. in additional the the driving and handling, the interior looks great, the seat are supported and very comfortable. I get 49 to 51 mpg real mileage. 45mpg? You must be in power mode 100 percent of the time. It goes not studder... The ioniq is a prius killer because it is 100 percent a better vehicle. I challenge anyone who is looking for a hybrid. Test drive both cars and you will agree.
yeah im getting well average 54 and on longer trips def >58
Pete N I just got one we love it!Better on gas than my Honda insight
Justin,
Congrats on the Hyundai Ioniq. It does offer better mileage than the Honda.
Pete N i get 55 with the sel trim and i agree with you. He is driving in sport for what it seems most of the time. In this car, while accelerating it is gas, while crusing is electric. I found out that the mpg you get really depends on the roads. For example, on my way to the hockey rink, i get 60 mpg or a little better because im crusing at 45 mph with no stops for a long stretch so im not using any gas to accelerate. If im going to one of my friends house i get 52 mpg because of how the road is
Also, from the way he is dressed it seems it was cold and wet, both of which will lower mpg. Other reviewers have seemed to have no issue getting close to the EPA numbers with the Ioniq.
If they think evs are cheaper to charge just wait till they adds taxes and fees .
Honestly, the lane departure/blind spot monitoring and all those technological advancements
Are all useless lowkey. Just upgrade your mirrors and actually be aware of your surroundings and your solid.
I agree pay attention but the blind spot detection and the cross traffic detection are very slick features.
I agree with you about lane departure but blind spot detection, cross traffic detection and adaptive cruise control are worth the extra $1000 for the tech package on the SEL
the ioniq is definiteley a prius killer...
@JOE Geo Geez saw this same thing u said earlier.. Everyone agrees the switch in this is awesome.. Only the rear headroom is bad. Prius wins in mileage by about 8-10. But looks, comfort, easy to use tech, features, feel of drive.. the hyundai wins in alllll else and is also cheaper. Prius is already dead.
Apparently the Ioniq does not come with a spare tire. Does anybody know if there is space under the cargo floor for a tire and jack? I won't buy a car without a spare tire. Period.
There is room under the cargo floor for a spare tire and the kit (spare tire and jack) is available for purchase from Hyundai dealers (at least in the US, where the Ioniq is not equipped from the factory with a spare).
C'mon....Hyun Die? Really? "Dai" is pronounced De like Destiny. In Korean it means Modern.
Americans over 30 use the term because when they first came out in america they were incredibly cheap and not very reliable. Thus the name hyun- die.
I'm not sure a hybrid is fish or fowl. I'm sure if you drive like a miser you'll get 55 but if you drive it as a real car more like 45+. Plus this car has very slow acceleration and is quite loud inside. As good as 45MPG sounds I think I'd rather go with the upcoming new Elantra GT hatchback.
Once again, the Prius still rules and all the other hybrids are just kind of meh.
Never gonna get that Prius. Even if does 200mpg.
The all electric version was voted by the reviewers the better performer. Also...all those buttons are so old. I like a more up to date ipad control system like on the Tesla and Volvo cars assisted by steering wheel mounted short cuts. Hybrids are bad ideas.
Every single review for this car seems to suggest that Hyundai lied in regards to MPG. Everyone is getting mid 40's whereas with the Prius they get low 50's just as advertised.
Cod Mott I haven’t found that to be true in the reviews I’ve watched. And owner reports I’ve read confirm mpg well into 50s.
I think a lot of owners are just exhibiting wishful thinking and driving bias. They run to the grocery store and get 52 mph and use that as their benchmark. I had a dealer agree to let me have an extended test drive overnight so I could take this thing to work, to dinner, to tun errands, etc. I got mid 40's.
Cod Mott Interesting.
@@codmott286 Almost every review i saw said about 55 average. Not sure who reviewers u watched. But im thinking of buying and watch a lot of reviews including the "real world" test and also ones where ppl drove the car head and all got about 49-55 MPG. this is literally the first person i saw in about 25 reviews that sad anything below that.
Since when is gringo Pablo Escobar reviewing cars?

It's Hyundai... Like Sunday! Not how you are saying it.
