  • Hybrid hatchbacks: their number one USP is fuel economy, but they still need to be as practical and as easy to drive as other family cars if they're to make sense. I find out which you should choose from the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Niro and the Toyota Prius.

      I like the gear shifter on the Prius. It's like an old arcade video game joystick and it always pops back to center. It's also closer to the hand than the traditional style. The two things I hate about the Prius is the design of its back end (looks like a Pi symbol) and the seat belts. The Prius seat belts lock up at low speeds and mild turns in parking lots - that really sucks.

    I owned 3 prius, 2008, 2010 and 2016, the only one that gave me 50+ miles was the 2016 and you have to try really hard to get over 52mpg. I don't like the prius inside and outside design at all. I now drive Ioniq and love it, it wins in many ways not only on MPG.

    I drive the Ioniq as my daily driver and after 7 months I'm still very very pleased with this car. It's full option which makes it just a very well equipped and comfortable car. The roof is no issue for me, since I only have my kids in the back.
    I also test drove the Niro. It's called an SUV yes, but it really isn't much higher than a hatch. It's no comparison with the Kia Sportage which really is a much taller car. So in short: the Niro is more expensive, less fuel efficient and less spacious in the boot than the Ioniq. It has only one plus, which is room in the back. Ioniq won the race for me.

    • @nodak81
      @nodak81 5 років тому +5

      I'd choose the Ioniq too. It's probably a minor issue for most people, but I like having a spare tire and the Niro doesn't have one, and probably doesn't have the room to store one if you bought one separately (couldn't tell in the video how much room was under there).

    • @NeilNadelman
      @NeilNadelman 2 роки тому +2

      @@nodak81 The Niro most definitely has room for a spare tire in back. They cost about $280 US, and are easy to find via Google. I drive rideshare, and rear seat space is vital for me. I rented an Ioniq for a week, and while I loved its fuel economy, I hated its Prius-like bar across the rear windscreen, and the rear seats were pretty tight for passengers. The Niro sacrifices cargo space for passenger comfort, so it wins for me.

    Many people, including Mat, have highlighted the fact that the Prius looks like a pig in knickers. As yourselves this, though. How often do you actually view the exterior of your car? I look at the exterior of mine when I walk towards it in order to drive it. I also look at it when I am cleaning it. Other than that I don't see the exterior because I'm on the inside. For me, the most important part of a vehicle's styling is the interior: not the exterior. I do, however, draw the line at the pre- 2018 versions of the Nisan Leaf.

    I have just had a new "IONIQ" for two days as a courtesy car. from Mobility.
    Very impressed. out of FIVE:-
    Comfort 5
    Ride/Suspension 5
    Drive / performance 5 - it will 'GO' better than any auto i know on kickdown! Loads of Volts!
    Handling 4.5 great steering and brake feel. not too much sway at all. (i drive an Mazda Monaco..No ABS no power steering, no power windows etc. a pure drivers car!)
    Anyway, i digressed...
    MPG - Avg -68mpg over 180 miles town/motorway.
    All round visibilty 4.5..pillar blind spots are negligible, mirrors very good.
    Reversing Camera, lane identifier (if you should 'stray'.)
    Wide opening doors and a superb boot......fitted the wheel chair in easily!.
    Dashboard data can be a little too much for some, but it's your choice of screen!
    A/C / ventilation is Super adjustable and great in this heatwave.
    without prejudice....Put up against an audi Q2......it's the better car for us, with two dogs and frequent 260mile trips to Cornwall.

It seems like a great choice if I have kids one day and need to put in/remove car seats. However, the Ioniq is an IIHS Top Safety Pick for both 2017 & 2018. I have test driven all three vehicles and my conclusion is totally different than yours.. I love toyota but the prius is not defined as the hyundai ioniq. The hyundai ioniq has a life time battery warranty replacement with a much better interior and seats. The look and quality of the exterior and interior is higher quality than the prius. The handling and driving quality is better on the ionqi. I strongly recommend each person who is looking for a hybrid to go test drive each vehicle. You are wrong on this match up.... I still like your reviews and will continue to watch...

  • @Rndmaniacs
    @Rndmaniacs 6 років тому +8

    I like the Prius actually, it's different which isn't a bad thing. I have also driven the Prius and the Ioniq and they both pretty decent. The Toyota feels more comfortable and NVH levels are much lower than the Hyundai. Though I agree it has a infotainment system that feels like using an aftermarket system from 5 year's ago. The Hyundai's is great and has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

    I am so confused about the fuel efficiency to this three cars. Prius MPG: Up to 58 city / 53 highway, Niro MPG: Up to 52 city / 49 highway, Ioniq MPG: Up to 57 city / 59 highway, these data are from US EPA. How come this data is very different from you mention? Why Prius becomes the highest efficient and much higher than the other two?

    I like the way the Prius looks. It's not boring like most cars. It's purposeful. But not with those wheels. They're like £9.99 plastic trims from a backstreet car accessory shop.

  • @bwilson4web
    @bwilson4web 6 років тому +2

    Having driven both the Prius and Ioniq (Niro was not available,) we bought the bottom trim, Prius Prime plug-in to go with our used, plug-in BMW i3-REx. These cars came with dynamic cruise control and automatic collision braking that is an extra cost on the Ioniq and requires the most expensive top trim.
    The Ioniq stepped gear transmission kept the engine busy cycling up and down seeking different gears with motion sick rocking versus the smoother Prius. As for efficiency, the Ioniq MPG gauge maximum is 99 MPG while the Prius goes to 199 MPG.

    2019 Niro EX NZ$36,990
    2019 Ioniq Entry NZ$46,990

    I quite like the look of the Niro. I'm not a crossover fan, but find this to be the prettiest of the 3. Also, I like the look of its interior. I don't like the Prius insides, and not the iconiq (a step backwards from the i40), however, I must add I've not seen the Niro in the flesh.
