I've been a Toyota guy all my life and owned several Priuses before....until recently. Appointment set for the 2019 Prius LE pickup but moments before that I stopped by the local Hyundai dealership right next to the Toyota dealership where I supposed to pick up my new Prius, I found the Ioniq Limited by chance then things completely changed since. I test drove the Ioniq and loved the design, its full list of tech package ..convinced me to dump my Prius then jumpship for good for the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Limited with ultimate package included. Words can't describe how much I love it compared to all my Priuses, not that my Priuses are bad, but the new 2019 Hyundai Ioniq has tons of things I wish my Priuses had. Bottom line, I'm extremely happy with my decision in getting the Ioniq instead of the Prius. Great job Hyundai!!
I just bought the Ioniq and absolutely love it. I went from a Lexus SUV at 20mpg to the Ioniq at 55mpg with a comparable ride. Sub 10 second 0 to 60 doesn't bother me at all.
Impressive! It's funny how many people think they need to get to 60 faster than 10 seconds. With all the traffic I'd rather have the economy over performance :)
I'm so glad you finally did a video on the Ioniq. I've been loving mine with great fuel economy and incredible cargo capacity. My favorite car I have ever owned!
The Ioniq is the whole package to me, namely high fuel efficiency, rear independent suspension, enormous cargo room (even more with folded rear seats), dual clutch transimmision (not CVT YEAH!!!), lifetime battery warranty, decent look (compares to Prius), Apple Carplay/Android Auto, and most important of all THE PRICE! I'm convinced!!!
I consider the dct to be one of the few downsides of the ioniq. Dislike of the "cvt feel" is mostly based on ignorance - that droning is the sound of your engine delivering maximum power or efficiency continuously, it is a good thing.
I'm not that against CVT I know what it's capable of, if someone invented a CVT for bicycle I would definitely buy one. But for cars, I'm in the European camp who still prefer gears. The only Japanese car maker that still use gears today is Mazda.
yan-Deriction exactly! the e-cvt of the Toyota hybrid system is actually very efficient and reliable. No DCT to worry about. Funny thing is, car makers are starting to have 9-10speed gearboxes which is to emulate a cvt keeping the engine in its most efficient range!
Actually I think you're all right. I personally don't care about the transmission as long as it gets to the right ratio in a reasonable amount of time. I must admit I do drive a car with a CVT and haven't had any problems with it and I don't even notice the drone, LOL.
I bought a 2017 Ioniq hybrid and have driven about 800 miles now and I'm getting around 63-64 MPG! (sports mode for acceleration and eco all other times) I love it except I have had 2 minor small plastic parts slightly break. the seat "lifter" handle is loose and the driver's side door handle (where the keyhole is hidden) trim is starting to fall off. but I'm covered with a 125,000 bumper to bumper warranty so not too worried. Update: 1300 miles AVERAGE 65 mpg. Don't know how but that's what the on board display shows
I totally agree with you Alex, I bought the SEL with the tech package and I am consistently beating the EPA scores and the this car has been great as a rideshare money maker. I love this little hybrid loaded with excellent features

People think that the only reason to buy a hybrid is the fuel economy. While fuel economy is a big plus, cruising range is also a very real consideration. I couldn't help noticing the miles to empty readout (557). With that kind of range I can drive from Frederick Maryland to Portland, Maine (approximately 550 miles) on just one tank of gas. These cars are the solution to the range anxiety of the plug-ins.

After about 2 months of research we finally worked up the gumption to step foot in the dealership today to buy a 2020 Prius. For the sake of having an informed decision we test drove the Prius and Ioniq back-to-back. We immediately preferred the Hyundai. We felt Ioniq had superior handling, visibility out of the car, more comfortable seats, more useable cargo space, better general ergonomics and intuitiveness of design. It objectively changed our mind even though we were biased toward the Prius. I wish I found this video earlier because it probably would have saved me 2 months of reading. It also was nice to have my suspicions confirmed about the handling being better than the Prius (as if the Prius set such a high bar in the first place). As a package and price the Ioniq is superior. I drive a Miata and a WRX as well.
Nice to finally have someone recommend a hybrid not just as a hybrid, but as a car. Its has always been my opinion anyone who is looking for a compact econobox for commuting, road trips etc should consider the prius, and I also think the prius handily beats every other compact in the used car market. However now the ioniq is proving that hybrids are not only competitive in the used car market, but also as new cars, and that's fantastic.
@@limenghean It might be a good car Prius, but its driver's seat gives me a terrible leg ache after several hours in city driving in my Prius. I really hope Ioniq has better seat design.
If I was car shopping I would choose either the Niro or Ioniq hands down. Could we get a comparison between those two? Even though they share a lot in common, they're also quite different from one another.

awesome review. I purchased my ioniq for exactly this reason recently. It is such a pleasure to drive and own, and I love the huge cargo room as well. funny enough a relative will buy the Civic EX-T for the sporty handling but would have bought this if not for the Civic. Fantastic review for a fantastic car!!
Just a stellar review. I couldn't have asked for more. I really appreciated your organization and presentation of the material, especially things like the trim levels. I also liked your thorough and frequent comparisons with other options. Keep up the great work!
I just bought one of these and love it (and love this review too)! But I will say in order for this car to really pass the test of time and beat the Prius over time the DCT will have to last up to 250k miles as is the case for the Prius transmission. I love the DCT, but have to say that is my only concern in terms of durability and beating the Prius in that regard too.
Jeff B How do you like the Ioniq after several months? I test drove and really liked it-except for the rollback I experienced when stopped on hills. There was no hold when I took my foot off the brake. What’s that about?
Hyundai has really been killing it with this and their last generation. I just hope the all-electric version gets significantly improved range as they iterate.
I looked at one of these last weekend in the showroom.....nice looking car....i'm 6ft tall and the back seat was comfy and i did not have to bend my head.

Indeed. What's weird, though, is that the all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions of the Ioniq do have a 12V lead-acid battery -- presumably for cost savings.
I test drove this car and was very impressed. I currently own a Sonata Hybrid. In the 2019 Ioniq I test drove, I did 0-60 in 9.1 Seconds. Car & Driver did it in 8.9. Very reasonable for a hybrid.
I saw my first Ioniq today. It is a nice looking car with a comfortable interior and lots of space. Why does Toyota make death-dragon looking vehicles when they could stand for beauty and taste, like Hyundai? Is beauty passé, Mr. Toyota?
Everything from Hyundai is great we have Accent 2008 (no problems so far) and the Santa Fe XL 2017 and it is very comfortable. Great quality for the price!
I have the hybrid model. And it gets really good gas mileage during warmer weather. In warm/hot weather I get 66-70 mpg. In cold weather I get 57-60 mpg. I also increase the tire pressure to 38 lbs I refuel it once every 7-8 days in warmer weather. And once in 5 days in cold weather. This is based on my commute on flat roads at average speed of 60-65 mph And my mileage is totaled 104 miles per day. It’s an awesome vehicle!
Brilliant review. You provide extraordinary details and outstanding observations. You have got to be the best automotive reviewer on UA-cam, without a single doubt.
Thank you for this review Alex. I am actually looking to lease a new vehicle, and have been thinking along the lines of the Ioniq and the Kia Niro. This is a very helpful review! Now on to the Niro review.
Can you explain your choice ? I've come to Toyota dealer, I saw the price of Prius, then Toyota and saw it was at least 5k euro less for same options . I'm not rich, so I think I'll take the the ioniq :)
Hi, Price difference in my country is not so huge. Prius has more space in the front and back, better all round visability, better seats, more comfortable ride, and it doesn't look like a normal car. Ioniq looks almost boring to me. To much like a normal car. Interior design could be from a 15 year old car. At last, the prius has proven itself as a very reliable car. That's why i chose the prius.
Thanks Alex for this informative and detailed review of the Ioniq Hybrid. This vehicle, with the excellent fuel mileage and attractive price-point, may be the only compact car that could get me out of my '17 Impreza which returns an average of 28.7 mpg only!
Thanks so much Alex. I've been waiting for this review. The one thing you specifically mentioned was the space under the cargo floor that can accommodate a spare tire. This is so important to me that I will not buy a car without a spare tire, or at least space for one under the floor. I watched many video reviews of the Hyundai Ioniq that skipped right over that feature. I even sent email to Hyundai Customer Service who (unbelievably) said there isn't room for a spare. Go figure. We are on our second Prius. They are great cars but Toyota is taking them in directions that I don't like. We didn't buy the latest model but found a new 2015 model so we wouldn't have to deal with the more recent models which I don't like. I was wondering what I would buy next as I don't think it will be a Prius. I've always hated the centered gauge cluster of the Prius. I'm glad to see the traditional gauges of the Ioniq. I also hate the new white accents inside the latest Prius. I also don't like that Toyota knocked about 2" off the height of the car and designed a more laid back driver's seat because of the loss of height. I prefer a more vertical seating position and was attracted to the Kia Niro for that feature. I still need to know the seat height of the Ioniq and how the driver's position compares with the Prius. Outside looks don't phase me much. That should be obvious due to the fact that I've purchased two Prius which aren't good looking cars. Still the Ioniq is eye catching and certainly beats the latest Prius mess. I really feel I am ready to make the switch from Prius to Ioniq or less so perhaps the Niro. Thanks again for your excellent reviews.
John Donaldson I love my Ioniq... could have bought a Prius but didn't for many of the reasons you mentioned. make the switch, you will enjoy it more and save some cash!
Well if you drive uber and and put 5000 miles per month than car pays for itself compare to camry or accord. because you are saving $300 every month in gas. if gas price is $3 a Gallon
Excellent Review. I especially appreciated the comparison to other compact cars. We have been looking for a comparable replacement for our Passat TDI which is no easy task, especially when it comes to cabin/trunk space, overall interior width and the extraordinary rear seat leg room. We just test drove the IoniQ and was surprisingly impressed with how immediately comfortable we felt. In many ways it was similar to our TDI. With two boys and large baseball equipment bags it seems like the Ioniq has enough trunk space to accommodate. The major con you did not talk about is the visibility. Our Passat is already poor because of the low roof line and headrests but the Ioniq is just as bad, maybe worse. The backup camera was obviously a must to compensate for the rear visibility which is probably why it comes standard. Also, the cross traffic warning is a must with the back window and rear visibility. Overall, the Ionic was surprisingly fun to drive and the sport mode really made a difference. The dual gear transmission is what makes this car great over any car with a CVT transmission.
Excellent review, covers everything. I totally agree. Finally a proper review that compares side by side and don't pick a vehicle because personal preference or because it is incline to a favorite brand but just base the judgment by facts.
Really impressed with Hyundai's achievements of late. The Ioniq really proves they aren't behind leading hybrid cars producer, Toyota. Not only that, the Ioniq is a lot nicer to the eye with it's much nicer interior and exterior styling. We now need to watch and see how Hyundai will prove they're just as reliable as the Prius.
awesome review with great amount of useful info as always. seems like its time to do review request attempts with this channel like a gaming channel lol. 1st Attempt can we please do an Audi S4 Alex?

Your review was pretty much right on target. Only error I spotted is that you said that the base trim is the only one with 15" tires. Actually the base and LED models both have 15" tires. Only the Limited has 17" tires!
For those worried about reliability, Hyundai backs this car with a 10 year 100000 mile warranty, 60000 basic warranty, free 5 years roadside assistance and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty. Does the ugly little prius offer any of those things?
@@WAN2TREE4 So, you're saying you want to buy a lithium battery? My mom had to for her Prius. I'll take the Hyundai lifetime lithium battery warranty any day.
I have a fleet of 8 Toyota Prius vehicles for my company. We put on approximately 1 million kilometers a year combined. None have broke down over the past 3 years. I'll stick with the Prius.
MURRAYsaysHI I choose the Ioniq over the Niro because of superior cargo space, better battery warranty, and much better fuel economy. only get the Niro if you really need a cross over form factor. The Ioniq is much better in my opinion.
I drove both. While the Niro is really not a bad car, it didn't excite me in any way. Also the buttons (steeringhweel / center console) felt a bit cheap. Then there's styling ... The nose just doesn't look "right", but that is personal ofcourse. Also let's not forget that the Niro is more expensive, heavier and has a smaller cargo space. The Ioniq suprised me in every aspect. I loved it. I couldn't believe this car does everything very well within it's price range. The only things I didn't like are: * Weird foot parking brake as 3rd mini-pedal * Steering feels a bit too light for my taste I could name a few options that you would expect on the limited (like auto-parking and traffic sign recognition), but honestly that doesn't bother me much. For this price the Ioniq is fantastic. It's my new car for the next four years.
I drove the Niro and was immediately turned off. My wife and I just drove the Ioniq last night and we both felt immediately comfortable. We were both surprised. Our biggest challenge was finding a replacement for our VW TDI which is no easy task because of the cavernous leg room and trunk space as well as handling and diesel torque. Although a step down from the TDI, this may be the first option we like with reasonable cabin space and trunk room.
Very nice thorough review. I've had my Ioniq Hybrid Limited for about 6 weeks now, and still loving it. Being in Canada, there a few different features on each trim level and overall. Just out of curiosity, in your 0 to 60 test, did you have the car in Eco or Sport mode? I haven't actually done a 0 to 60 test myself in my car, but I do notice a huge power difference when I switch it into Sport; the car literally becomes a different beast. I usually only use it when I need to cut into traffic or to accelerate from a stop up small hills. So I was just wondering what the 0 to 60 difference is between Sport and Eco mode, if you knew.
I choose the Ioniq over the Niro because of superior cargo space, better battery warranty, better performance and much better fuel economy. only get the Niro if you really need a cross over form factor. The Ioniq is much better in my opinion.
i wonder what putting on the biggest widest tires on this car possible with nice rims? tirerack says it can handle P225/40R18 tires with Enkei rims. will it kill the fuel economy?
Excellent review. I am holding on buying until the Ioniq plugin hybrid is released and also until I hear your review and comparison with the Chevy volt. Thanks for the review! 🙏
Ioniq hybrid is the Best car of 2017-2018! The only drawback is a long waiting time (currently) from the factory as the sales popularity has surpassed production capability. :)
Alex, I have seen in the comments below how you addressed the dual clutch transmission question. Thank you! In addition, how long can the ioniq stay in ev mode before going back to gas ?
I was really confused as to why Hyundai didn't have ventilated seats in the limited trim when the Niro has them in the touring and you can also get them in Europe on the Limited trim in this vehicle.?
Jonathan Jackson I'm quite curious myself. Honda does the same thing with the Ridgeline, ventilated seats in Canada but not America. What do you think is the reasoning behind that Alex?

I test drove this car and was very impressed. I currently own a Sonata Hybrid. In the 2019 Ioniq I test drove, I did 0-60 in 9.1 Seconds. Car & Driver did it in 8.9. Very reasonable for a hybrid.
super review on a vehicle I did not know about. This is the first Hybrid I am now interested in. Thanks.
Great quality for the price!
thanks for the great content. glad to hear the ioniq is this good
Summary of this review: Ioniq is better than prius and pays off in 2 years vs 6 years. I'm sold... Sorry Toyota, the prius has 0 appeal now.
Resale value.
mountainhobo Prius resale value is shit too.
"Prius resale value is shit too." -- Yeah, right. Let's not waste each other's time by making stuff up.

higher initial cost, more components and cheap price of gas, did you expect hybrids to retain more value ? get a hold of reality.
I have the hybrid model.
And it gets really good gas mileage during warmer weather.
In warm/hot weather I get 66-70 mpg.
In cold weather I get 57-60 mpg.
I also increase the tire pressure to 38 lbs
I refuel it once every 7-8 days in warmer weather.
And once in 5 days in cold weather.
This is based on my commute on flat roads at
average speed of 60-65 mph
And my mileage is totaled 104 miles per day.
I get 72mpg out of my Ioniq with careful driving.
My best MPG was 67.5, which was just mind blowing.... ;)
@@57Carlibra what year
Did you piss off the drivers behind you as well?
I did the speed limit, so if they didn't like it, too bad.
I inflate the tires to about 38psi
"This one will accommodate somewhat squarer drinks..." Huh? I don't think I've ever seen square drink cups at any fast food joints..
Great review! So much to like about the car, including the ability to put a small spare in the rear :)
A very interesting review, Alex. Makes a rather convincing argument in favor of the Ioniq over any of the orther hybrids of similar size.
Went to the Hyundai dealer last week. Nice car, full of options. Bought a Prius the next day.
Can you explain your choice ? I've come to Toyota dealer, I saw the price of Prius, then Toyota and saw it was at least 5k euro less for same options . I'm not rich, so I think I'll take the the ioniq :)
Hi,
Price difference in my country is not so huge.
😄👍
Thanks Alex for this informative and detailed review of the Ioniq Hybrid.
This vehicle, with the excellent fuel mileage and attractive price-point, may be the only compact car that could get me out of my '17 Impreza which returns an average of 28.7 mpg only!
I enjoy your cabin Noise ratings Alex! Thank you!
I took the time and effort to deaden/reduce the noise in my Ioniq. It was quite a bit of work but worth it to me.
I love it how Alex on Autos states the dB cabin noise level as a spec. vastly missing in other channels...
Well if you drive uber and and put 5000 miles per month than car pays for itself compare to camry or accord. because you are saving $300 every month in gas. if gas price is $3 a Gallon
Usman Ullah Asif that's why I bought it
I agree, near perfection for Ride-sharing drivers.
In fact, one of my passengers told me he had just delivered 25 Hyundai Ioniq hybrids to Lyft. I guess they "rent" them out to drivers who need a car.
Great review. Wow. The Prius dethroned
Best and honest review i've seen about the Ioniq. Thank you
solid video, im convinced. will test drive this week.
Thanks a lot for this great comparative review. I love your channel
Really thorough reviewer and I just bought the plug in hybrid, can’t wait until it arrives.
Came here from your q60 red sport review, awesome video! new sub time
Excellent Review.
So it's the best in a class of car i have 0 interest in owning. Excellent review as always, Alex :D
Thanks for making this video. It's 2019 and this is the car I'm going to buy! :)
Hyundai is refreshing the exterior and the interior for 2020 if you care about that.
This is soooooooooo much more attractive than the Priius, both inside and out.
awesome review with great amount of useful info as always. seems like its time to do review request attempts with this channel like a gaming channel lol. 1st Attempt can we please do an Audi S4 Alex?
best review that ive ever seen! greetings from Turkey
Thank you for your super in depth well researched review I greatly appreciate it!!
Excellent review. Thanks
Great review, Alex! I just recently reviewed the all-new Ioniq, as well! I was very impressed with its performance! Offering great space, material quality, and efficiency.
You did an impeccable job showing off this vehicle. Keep up the great work, AoA! 👍🏽

"The Quest To Record The Best!" 📽
Shameless self promotion of your channel, well done.
Your review was pretty much right on target. Only error I spotted is that you said that the base trim is the only one with 15" tires. Actually the base and LED models both have 15" tires. Only the Limited has 17" tires!
Irv Haas You're correct... but its actually the SEL trim and not LED.
$2500 more for a Prius, that would explain why the sales continue to drop. The styling didn't help either. Also the lack of AA & ACP.
-.- Cat I didn’t know a loaf of bread has headlights.
But it comes with more standard stuff like led headlights and toyota safety sense
You ever replaced LED headlights when they burn-out? Almost $1000. That feature is a disadvantage
.
@@electrictroy2010 You might want to check the veracity of that statement with a simple online search. Not even close.
For those worried about reliability, Hyundai backs this car with a 10 year 100000 mile warranty, 60000 basic warranty, free 5 years roadside assistance and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty. Does the ugly little prius offer any of those things?
10 yr./100K power train warranty
Lifetime lithium battery warranty!
There's a reason why that warranty is long and I think you know why
@@WAN2TREE4 So, you're saying you want to buy a lithium battery? My mom had to for her Prius. I'll take the Hyundai lifetime lithium battery warranty any day.
I have a fleet of 8 Toyota Prius vehicles for my company. We put on approximately 1 million kilometers a year combined. None have broke down over the past 3 years. I'll stick with the Prius.
Driving my ioniq right now and just discovered the lumbar button. Never knew that was there. Thanks
ALEX, which would you choose the Niro or this????
MURRAYsaysHI I choose the Ioniq over the Niro because of superior cargo space, better battery warranty, and much better fuel economy. only get the Niro if you really need a cross over form factor. The Ioniq is much better in my opinion.
thanks
I drove both. While the Niro is really not a bad car, it didn't excite me in any way. Also the buttons (steeringhweel / center console) felt a bit cheap. Then there's styling ... The nose just doesn't look "right", but that is personal ofcourse. Also let's not forget that the Niro is more expensive, heavier and has a smaller cargo space. The Ioniq suprised me in every aspect. I loved it. I couldn't believe this car does everything very well within it's price range. The only things I didn't like are:
* Weird foot parking brake as 3rd mini-pedal
* Steering feels a bit too light for my taste
I could name a few options that you would expect on the limited (like auto-parking and traffic sign recognition), but honestly that doesn't bother me much. For this price the Ioniq is fantastic. It's my new car for the next four years.
MURRAYsaysHI niro for sure.
You left no stone unturned. Great review.
Alex, how would you compare ioniq to niro ? thnx
I choose the Ioniq over the Niro because of superior cargo space, better battery warranty, better performance and much better fuel economy. only get the Niro if you really need a cross over form factor. The Ioniq is much better in my opinion.
Excellent video review!! That Ioniq sounds like a big winner.
This was a great review, but I'm disappointed you didn't include the Prius V, but included the C Max.
i wonder what putting on the biggest widest tires on this car possible with nice rims? tirerack says it can handle P225/40R18 tires with Enkei rims. will it kill the fuel economy?
Excellent Review. Now you need to do a video for the 2019 Ioniq. You, Rock!
Canadian version does not have the digital speedo tach swap. On the highest model. Very upset about that.
This is my next car thanks to your very detailed review. Having room for a doughnut spare tire was the deciding factor for me.
Awesome review, sir
Can you do a comparison between the Hyundai ioniq and the new Honda Insight please?
How is the AC in an Ioniq (or Niro). I'm concerned that hybrids get a tuned down AC for economy. We live in the south, so a cold AC is very important.
extraordinary auto review channel! appreciate the video. it covered everything i wanted to know.
Alex, I have seen in the comments below how you addressed the dual clutch transmission question. Thank you! In addition, how long can the ioniq stay in ev mode before going back to gas ?
beautiful car-top spec is awesome
Always excellent reviews! Could you possibly add in crash test ratings more often? That would be much appreciated.
What do you think is the reasoning behind that Alex?
excellent review, Alex.
