This song was an absolute masterpiece. The video took it beyond the Stars.
I love that eyeroll Death gives at the end. It's like, "Fine... Keep him. I'll get you both later anyway."
Reminded me of the monsters in the From TV show that never run to kill their prey. They ALWAYS walk because the people are trapped in the town, and they'll get them all... eventually.
I figure the icon falling off the wall was a harbinger of Siobhan's angel of death coming... 😆
@@Johnny_Socko 👏😂
My fav comment this week!
I saw that. Brilliant.
I’ve heard of sopranos shattering glass with their voice but this is the first time I’ve seen a vocalist with the ability to knock things off a wall!! 😁
😂😂
It's all auto tune. I'm sorry. But it's too artificial.
@@nineradvocate I'm old (really old) school when it comes to making music so it's not my thing either. Just having fun. 🙂
Autotune came 1996 or 1997, this song 1992. Some people can sing.
@@Eulaalia10 the Eventide H910 Harmonizer debuted in the 1970s. Pitch correction has been around for about 50 years now. This song was actually used as an example of heavy use of it, especially in the beginning of it. I am old and I remember it. I may have been wrong about which pitch corrector they were using, but they were definitely using one. And one turned way way up. Like Cher famously did in Believe.
Fun fact. The shoot for this video took way longer than expected, and everybody was getting bored, so Siobhan went for a wander, found the bar and got absolutely smashed on vodka. When she showed up to do her part she could barely stand up, but they went with it and the result was brilliantly and hilariously over the top.
Also, the name Shakepears Sister is the title of a song by The Smiths.
Great story thanks for that👍
Her dance was very Rocky Horror Picture Show … I loved this ever since I was a teenager.

More importantly, the hypothetically tragic life of Shakespeare's fictional sister is given in a speech by Virginia Woolf in the 1920s to the young women of Girton College, Cambridge, and subsequently published as the essay 'A Room of One's Own'. It imagines a sister of the playwright attempting to work in theatre in a world where women were denied an education, and any career beyond bearing children and keeping house.
Woolf: 'Any woman born with a great gift in the sixteenth century would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at. For it needs little skill in psychology to be sure that a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty. No girl could have walked to London and stood at a stage door and forced her way into the presence of actor-managers without doing herself a violence...'
The lady being scary is Siobhan from Bananarama.
Yes, It’s gonna be a cruel summer. 😊
Well at the time she left Bannana Rama
I was today years old 😳
She’s your Venus, she’s your fire, it’s your desire…
Love her
Marcella Detroit is singing at the start, Siobhan Fahey (formerly of Bananarama) is the other singer
What happened with Shakespeares Sister was sad. It was Siobhan's solo project originally - she was the lead and Marcie was brought in as a backing singer.
It was their management who requested that Marcie be lifted into co-lead and Siobhan felt strongarmed into it. Understandably, there was an element of resentment, even though they were dynamite together.
Siobhan went through a very rough patch with her marriage and her mental health and it led to her sacking Marcie very publicly at an awards show, having not told her before hand.
They didn't speak another word for years, right up until 2019 when they started mending fences.
They got back together properly a year later and are now releasing music and touring together again.
Im glad they've buried the past and hope they do another album because their 90s work was amazing.
Marcella Detroit (American) took part in a British TV show called Pop Star to Opera Star, and she sang a notoriously difficult Mozart aria called The Queen of the Night which involves some unbelievably high notes - an F above a high C - and she was INCREDIBLE! It was quite a while ago. I think she, unfairly, came 2nd to an English woman from Bucks Fizz (if I remember rightly). I can only imagine it was because the public wanted a British person to win. Shame on them if true - speaking as an English woman myself. Marcella, hands down, deserved to Win 🏆
Siouxsie and the Banshees! Bjork! Garbage! L7! Liz Phair! PJ Harvey! So many amazing female artists of the 90's that I would love to see someday.
Add Hole and Elastica to that list as well
Pretend We're Dead is an awesome L7 song!
You forgot sister 7, Magnapop, Elastica, Tracy Bonham, Veruca Salt, NY Loose, the Breeders, Whale, Aimee Mann, and Concrete Blonde! Lol love the ones you mentioned though!
Liz Phair, 'and he slayed her' (ding dong, the witch is dead)
Amen. But let's not forget Elizabeth Fraser ❤
Marcella Detroit has an amazing voice. Siobhan Fahey was in Bananarama. Great girl group(s). They didn't speak for 20+ years but are now back together. This track still hold the UK record for longest number 1 by a girl group (8 weeks), unbeatable by the Spice Girls or even Little Mix. They have many hits for you to check out :))
Cruel Summer is definitely my fave!
I recall one member of Bananarama is married to Andrew Ridgley, “the other guy” in Wham!
This song was their ONLY hit song in the United States. They are a One-Hit Wonder here.
Yes, they came out with an amazing new song just a couple years back called “All The Queens Horse’s” and have been touring since.
@@ashleydixon4613WAS married 😉 It's Keren Woodward. Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama and Shakespears Sister fame was married to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.
The angel of death Is Siobhan Fahey (* 1958) formerly of Bananarama who had become tired of the pure pop direction Bananarama was going. So she left in spring 1988 to form Shakespears Sister. Her biggest hits were "Stay" (1992) from their second album "Hormonally Yours" and "You're History" from their first album "Sacred Heart" which includes my favourite "Run Silent". The girl with the high voice is Marcella Detroit (* 1950). She was fired by Siobhan in 1993 maybe because of jealousy. But they reunited in 2019 after 26 years of silence and released the WONDERFUL single "All The Queen's Horses". All of the songs I mentioned plus "I Don't Care" (1992) are definitely worth checking out!
Marcella Detroit is the singer. Siobhan Fahey is the angel of death. She was also in Bananarama
I haven’t listens to this song in about 30 years and my whole body came out in goose bumps. WOW What a masterpiece ❤
Still does it to me now
hey that's funny....exactly the same thing
Me too
Likewise, I remember belting this out snd my dad yelling that I'd be on my deathbed if I didn't shut up. Good old days
Me too, I'm a huge fan.
Sophie B Hawkins "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" is a perfect song for female Friday's! Plus a big 90's hit!
Their song "I Don't Care" is also fantastic.
This album was on HEAVY ROTATION in my college dorm room that year!
My favourite ... as well as the video for it!
Absolutely my favorite of theirs!
Dang, I’d forgotten about that song!
This song has three acts and all three smash... Probably my all time fave song.. what i absolutely love about it is you can how it influences current artists..
Something in the water over the pond the artists are insanely talented
That angel of death is Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama....I love this record, "Stay."
Virginia Woolf wrote an essay entitled “A Room of One’s Own” in which she contemplates what it would be like ‘if Shakespeare had a sister’ as talented as he. Would her works have been recognized in a world run by men? Would she even be allowed a room in which to write?
Anyway, that’s where the band’s name comes from. A perfect choice for Female Friday.
Never knew that! Thanks!
P
So intresting, thank you for information!
Who's afraid of Virginia wolf ? 😆 great movie. .
William Shakespeare did have two sisters, but they died before he was born.
One of the most magical and beautiful songs ever made. It came out 1992, I was 11 years old. Goosebumps everytime I hear it. ❤
Fun fact: Marcella Detroit, as Marcy Levy, co-wrote Lay Down Sally with Eric Clapton and did backing vocals for him many times. She’s an incredible vocalist and it’s good to see this song tingling spines so many years after its release.
I ̶h̶a̶d̶ have a huge crush on Siobhan Fahey (the scary one).
Me: Watching Jay be impressed with Marcella’s range in the first few lines of the song, but also knowing she’s about to go full Mariah soon.
Praising the vocals and were all sitting here thinking.....wait for it, wait for it....
iobhan Fahey, born 10 September 1958 in Dunshaughlin, County Meath, is an Irish singer, former member of Bananarama and then Shakespeare's Sister. Between 1987 and 1996, she was married to musician David A. Stewart
When the second vocalist drops, everything changes. What a unique song. Marcella Detroit is the first vocalist, and Siobhan Fahey is the “Angel of Death”.
♥️✌🏼😎🎭
YES! Almost like that song "In the Air" by Phil Collins.
I love Siobhan's voice. It really give the song power!
Siobhan was pissed when they filmed that scene as well. I think she drank a couple of bottles of wine or something to get into character which I find absolutely hilarious. She did it so well though.
She was my celebrity crush when I was younger because of part in this song weirdly enough 😂 Well not weird. All my lad mates thought she was a bit weird. I still think she's hot lol
@@russellhobbs7245It was vodka lol
I love watching first time reactions to this video because no one is ever ready for that drop.
I love you so much. You are incredibly open to music. You are characterized by a true curiosity about new songs and musical decades. I love watching you.
"Hello. Turn Your Radio On" is another song by Shakespear's Sister that I would listen to on a loop as a teenager because of it's beautiful sound. It was both melancholy and hopeful.
There's plenty of other songs by Shakespear's Sister that I could recommend. Their album "Hormonally Yours" was pretty much Golden for me. But I'd definitely recommend "Hello" for the video. :)
Marcella Detroit is the first singer and she has a very interesting history working with Eric Clapton. The creepy singer is Siobhan Fahey who was in Bananarama and was also married to Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics. The album this song is from us called Hormonally Yours and is one of my favorite albums of the early 90’s. It’s a frigging masterpiece.
I was going to mention something similar to this as well! This song drew me in when it was first released!!!
Came here to say just that!
Yes! Amen!
Siobhan reminds me of Magenta from Rocky Horror
The reason the album was called Hormonally Yours is they were both pregnant when they were writing it.
This song gets more powerful with multiple hearings. Listen to it more than once.
Marcella Detroit could also sing this flawlessly live. I heard them do it twice and each time she hit every single note exactly as you hear it on the recording. Incredible talent.
I saw a recent live performance where she is ~70 years old and delivered the song flawlessly, same for Siobhan :)
absolute fantastic song. Loved it the first time round when it was initially released, and still love it now! Most of the songs from some 20-30 years past are still the best in the music world, and this is right up there amongst the top rankings!
The angel of death was the former member of Bananarama!
Another duo from the 80s are sisters Mel and Kim who have a more dance/pop sound with Respectable, Showing Out, FLM.
I always loved this song but it became more poignant when I lost my husband. I can't help but shed a tear when I hear it. . 😢 A classic of a song and video.
Music really has a way of pulling those feelings out eh. My condolences.
I'm very sorry for your loss. ❤ Hope you're doing well.
Hope you’re doing ok ❤️
I know losing your husband is tougher than losing a best friend but the Huey Lewis And The News song Power Of Love reminds me of my late best mate Clifford because,
1- We were both MASSIVE Back To The Future fans.
2-I remember he always had his Huey Lewis And The News Greatest Hits CD sitting beside his computer in his bedroom.
Still miss you Cliff😢😢.
Sorry for your loss Dawn my thoughts and prayers 🙏 are with you
Dawn, I felt exactly the same when I lost my husband. I feel like I want it played at my own funeral to express how I felt xx
"Stay" is such a cool song.
INTERESTING FACT:
Marcella Detroit (Marcy Levy) sings the intro.
Siobhan Fahey sings in the later part of the song.
Siobhan Fahey used to be
in "BANANARAMA"
Her bandmate from
Bananarama used to date
Dave Evans in the 1980s.
Dave Evans is the man who appears in the music video for "Stay" by
Shakespeare's Sister.
LOVE THE SONG!
❤❤
Siobhan & Marcella are 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Shakespeare's Sister were SO underrated back in their day, and they were AMAZING! The lady with the angelic voice is Marcella Detroit, and the Angel of Death is Siobhan Fahey (pronounced 'Shivorn Faye,') formerly of another well-known eighties girl group Bananarama. Fun fact: while making this video, Siobhan had to do many hours of waiting around before she got to shoot her bit, so she passed the time drinking... a lot. If you were thinking she looked drunk while she was performing in this, that's because... she was!
Other songs of theirs I can recommend: 'You're History,' 'I Don't Care,' 'Hello (Turn Your Radio On)...'
I agree with ewerything you said, but the fact they were underreted - nope...
They were all over MTV and radio
No dude, you were right, this is William Shakespeares real sisters, they are 475 years old and they wanted to make a pop album.
As a teenager of the 90s, it’s so cool to see y’all discovering this video for the first time. Such a uniquely beautiful song! ❤⭐️
his song gets me every time 😭
Forgot how great this song actually is. Nice reaction
Toy Soldier by Martika....now thats a 90s song for sure.
Marcella Detroit was the lead singer. The other singer was Siobhan Fahey, who was in Bananarama and was once married to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.
I remember this video from my childhood & was slightly scared of it! The song is amazing, as is, now looking back to it, the video. Cannot believe this muat be abiut 30yrs old?? Still stunning.
Shakespears Sister is an alternative pop and rock musical duo based in the United Kingdom that was formed in 1988 by singer-songwriter Siobhan Fahey, a former member of Bananarama. Shakespears Sister was initially a solo act but became a duo by 1989, with the addition of American musician Marcella Detroit.
Fun fact: If the 2nd singer appears drunk' it’s because she was! She was absolutely off her face drunk, and the bit where struggling over his body, Marcella is genuinely trying to control her, like, "Pull it together, woman, we’re working here!!"
Nothing to do with alcohol! She wasn’t drunk at all! It is a battle life over death battling over her love
@@kylieknight2365 I understand the concept of the video, but I read somewhere she was actually drunk during filming.
great vocals and theatrics by both women, if I remember correctly Siobhan later confessed to being hammered during filming this video
I love watching the younger generations reacting to the music I grew up with and you guys faces when it switched up made the video well worth the watch
Patrick Wilson the actor and the band Ghost just released a cover of this. You may find it interesting as well!
Marcella Detroit (Marcy Levy) is the main singer on this one. She co-wrote Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” (and sang backup on it) about 14 years before this song was a hit. She was nearly 40 here.
Right from 1992 , over and over and over again, one of the best videos i have ever experienced
this is amazing and still after so many years, so in time. This with Sinneads Nothing compares to U bring me to tears. These songs were often used in funerals or a reminder the loss of someone close and the soulseaching u do when.
I remember when I first saw this video and thought how awesome it was in its theatricality and weirdness.
Edit; LOL I typed the above before watching your video. Those objects falling off your wall were an omen of the witch to shortly come in the video. Get it? You weren't expecting what was to come in the video, you weren't expecting objects to fall off your wall. Too funny. The first singer obviously has a powerful voice.
My glamgoth heart had a huge crush on both of them. The 2nd vocalist Siobhan carried over from Bananarama, and Marcella is beautiful and has a great voice.
Damn like all the years never happened! This song is flawless.
growing up with MTV was the greatest blessing ever, i love the internet but we got to see the gates open.
The long haired singer is Siobhon Fahey from Bananarama whom you have previously reacted to - this song is hauntingly beautiful x x
Fun fact, Siobhan Fahey [the 'second' singer] admitted that when they filmed this video, they had spent all day waiting around and so she started drinking vodka to pass the time. They started filming at 8pm, by which point she was wasted.
You can kind of tell by her performance.
She downed nearly a whole bottle of vodka lol She nearly fell down the stairs 🤣
I love the connections of people here. Dave Stewart co-wrote this song with Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey who were the Shakespears Sister duo. Dave Stewart was part of the Eurythmics duo and was married Siobhan Fahey who was previously part of the Bananarama trio before forming this duo with Marcella Detroit. And lmao when the little shelf fell off the wall!🤣
Yes amazing duo, was a massive no1 in uk in the 90’s
This is one of those songs that I completely forget about until I hear it somewhere, and then I'm like YES I REMEMBER I LOVE THIS SONG. 😂
Marcella Detroit is an incredible vocalist. Her solo hit Believe is awesome
The Rob squad just look very confused when I first heard it saw the angel of death come down I thought wow 😮 this is great, with the music of today same as same as crap rap you can never be disappointed and unlike this record there are no surprises, sad very sad
'I Believe' from her brilliant solo album. I love the song 'Prima Donna', it's very operatic.
I believe is one of my favorite songs. Amazing vocals, beautiful lyrics…
This was a massive hit in the 90's , and I cnnot believe hardly anyone has reacted to this , the same
with Lady Jane from the stones and Kate Bush's Cloudbuster's and many more fabulous female artists...
I know the Stones are male but the song is about women....lol....Cheers to you both...
I was not expecting the turn the music took. And that "Angel of Death" was scary-psycho killer as whoa!
This is a hauntingly beautiful song from 1992. They were a one-hit wonder in the USA. Amazing song & video!!!\
Once again, I must compliment you on the random things falling in the background. I believe we are at 3 now, and the studio is still very new! 🤣 We should all place bets on the next thing to fall. This could be a fun game. 😁
This song was so cool when it came out!!! I still love how hauntingly beautiful it is❤
This is literally my favourite song ever ❤
Music History 101: the second vocalist & member of this duo on this song is none other than Siobhan. Siobhan was 1 of the 3 original girl group members of Bananarama.
AND, Siobhan is the former wife of Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics.
Siobhan & Dave Stewart share a daughter who was recently one of the contestants on this current season’s American Idol.
With Siobhan he had 2 sons, it is with his 3rd wife JS had 2 daughters - including the one you are referring to.
Stay was the group’s second hit . Their first hit You’re History , Siobhan takes the lead in the vocals and sheds her blonde bob hair cut poppy Bananarama image and shows off her deeper seductive voice while Marcella Detroit brings her high voice and gives the song a bit of an eccentric feel .
It’s not surprising you guys didn’t recognise Siobhan even though you did Bananarama’s I Heard A Rumour recently . She changed her image and singing style dramatically several years after leaving Bananarama
I was today years old...
Siobhan was so drunk when they recorded the video, she could hardly stand.
😂😂
My favorite is "Goodbye Cruel World", from the same album as "Stay".
Wow! I never knew that Siobhan was from Bananarama!
Formed in the UK, the duo are Marcella Detroit (American) who was the first vocalist and Siobhan Fahey (Anglo-Irish and ex-Bananarama) who was the Angel of Death. They had other hits but that was by far their biggest. They were only together as a duo for four years before falling out.
Anglo-American, surely?
@@markrichards636Siobhan's English-Irish lass ❤️
The lady in the opening Marcella Detroit toured and recorded with Eric Clapton on the Slowhand album, She sings back up on Lay Down Sally and co wrote that and The Core ..
Marcella's voice is so powerful it knocked the shelf off the wall.
The song was also written by Dave Stewart, who many will know from Eurythmics in the 80's, who co-wrote Sweet Dreams Are Made of This.....
And was married to Siobhan Fahey (the angel of death).
And this song is about Cat Women On The Moon
Marcella has practically made this song "untouchable" in the Karaoke world. Bravo!
I love this song since it came out
Siobhan and Marcella are a true dynamic duo. Separately, it would be hard to listen to each of them for too long. But the contrast of Marcella’s high notes and Siobhan’s deep husky tones is magic. A particularly haunting song I remember well is Hello (Turn your Radio on). It’s like someone woke up after everyone else on earth was wiped out 🫣
I friggin' love this song. It's STILL on my active play list.
Been there since the 90s! This is one of my all time faves
This song is timeless. Hard to believe the song is 31 years old!! Siobhan Fahey is 1 of the 3 singers from the 80s female trio called Bananarama. Marcella Detroit has an amazing vocal range . She is very tall. I met her 1x in NYC. Circa 994. She said s he was really close to 6'1!
one of the two that is SS - was a member of the British 80's girl group "Bananarama"
Great choice. This song was a big heat in 1992. You should also hear hello (turn your radio on) and i don't care.
Band is Letters To Cleo....song is called Here And Now.......total 90s one hit wonder with a female lead singer who sounds like an angel but the song is a banger....En Vogue's song Free Your Mind absolutely rocks!!! All great pics for Female Friday! Have a great weekend brothers and sisters!
Peace from PA ✌️
Yes! Fantastic song.
Letters to Cleo also had “Dangerous Type” from the movie soundtrack for “The Craft”, a 90s classic.
I was gonna suggest Here & Now but I couldn't remember the band. Thanks!
Shakespeare’s sister, even if she was much younger (let’s say 15 years) than William, would today be 444 years old. I, for one, would love to hear how she sounds and I wonder what genre she would fall into lol.
I must say though, this was really interesting and quite entertaining. I’d not heard of this song or these artists but I would definitely listen to more.
HOLY SH1T!!!! I jumped out of my skin when the shelf came down, I was that involved in the song 🤣
Gosh not heard this song for a long while ...
Thanks for playing it ❤
Glad you chose this one, Amber! A fave “one-hit wonder” of mine from 1992 (I was 17). Another from the early 90’s you should try for Female Friday is “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover,” by Sophie B Hawkins.
They had more than one hit
God I loved the music of the first half of the 90s...
they had more than one hit by the way
Cer5ainly not a one hit wonder!!
Sophie B. also had hits with songs like “Right Beside You” “As I Lay Me Down” and “California, Here I Come”.
I seen the girls perform this live when they opened up for Prince when he toured the UK. Awesome stuff.
Wow!! Now that's a concert I wish I was at!
They sang this for the first time in 27 years on Graham Norton in 2020 I think. These ladies still have vocals for daaaaayyyys. Marcella actually hits the note before a whistle with power.
Glad to see someone else love this song! It has a meaning to it when you really go deep within to other realms
Great song. That whole album is really good.
The first singer is Marcella Detroit. Several years ago I had the privilege of seeing her sing this with an acoustic guitar at a backyard concert.
A couple of fun facts:
The main singer in this song is Marcella Detroit, who wrote the song “Lay Down Sally” (1977) for Eric Clapton.
The other member is Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama.
Siobhan had to do so many takes to get her part as the “Angel of Death” right, that she got drunk in the process.
So you’re seeing a very intoxicated Siobhan.
This is favorite song from Shakespear's sister, I still love this song so much just as much as the first day I heard it.
I broke my neck in a diving accident in late summer of 1992. After months in UVA hospital, i was taken to a rehab center in Charlottesville, VA that was an old TB hospital from the 1940s. The nights were getting cooler as the days got shorter that fall. I could feel the cool air coming through those old, drafty windows when I was lying in bed. I had this cassette tape and played this song on my walkman over and over. It helped me a lot during that time. To this day, when I listen to this song, I'm right back in that old building lying in that bed. Music can do amazing things.
Getting Goosebumps everytime hearing the song ❤
This song has a very interesting structure. After the second chorus it seems like it’s going to become something different but then the chorus comes back into it, as the two different styles work with and against each other.
I love it that you are so real--just like your UA-cam audience. You could have just redone the reaction, but nope. Keepin' it real. That's why we're here.
I loved them and miss them. Great song❤
Amber! You need to check out Siouxsie & The Banshees! She’s SO influential. Considered by many to be the Mother of Goth music.
This is what I love about your channel: getting reintroduced to songs I'd long since forgotten and remembering how awesome they were. Your reaction to the dramatic turn from Marcella to Siobhan's vocals is exactly how we all felt the 1st time we heard it..
I forgot all about this song too!
Goosebumps, Every. Single. Time. 🥰
The main woman is Irish and then the other singer joined for about 4 years (she is American).
