Her diagnosed borderline personality disorder and agoraphobia, along with her toxic personality, has ruined her personal and business associations throughout her life. I'm broken 💔 I just found out about five minutes ago that Sinead O'Connor has passed away at the age of 56yrs. This song specifically has such a special meaning to me & it always will! May she R.I.P. 🕊️
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this song cannot even come close to some of his sensual ballads like Do me Baby, Scandalous or Insatiable.
Yes. But, I think Sinead sang it the best. Then Chris. Not a big fan of Prince's version of it. I'm a big fan of his lyrics and most of his performances. But not this performance.
@@Whistler4u There are actually a couple of videos here on UA-cam where Prince does the song solo. One is a rehearsal video with The Revolution at Paisley Park. I love Sinead's version but I have to say, after I heard Prince do it alone, I prefer his. The duet was I think back with The Family which was a group that Prince was heavily involved in do to the female lead singer who was Wendy Melvoin's sister, Susannah. He was romantically involved with Susannah and that was how he met Wendy and she became a part of The Revolution.

Sinead is a kind of "folk hero"in Ireland, for speaking the truth about the abusive catholic church. Could have been HUGE in the States, but her protest on TV put paid to that.
Is that also the case after she converted to Islam and tweeted: "What I'm about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it. @@elliotthedissident6077 Yeah she seems to have some issues with her craving for a religious meaning with life (she was ordained as a catholic priest by an independent catholic organisation) amd called herself christian and a believer in Jesus before eventually converting to Islam. It's especially funny how she had harsh words to say about the catholic church in the past yet doesn't comment on the disgusting practices of Islam (or atleast Sharia law) that takes place in some countries and communities.
She's an artist with her demons to wrestle with, but a fundamentally good & beautiful soul. For those who haven't seen it, here's the SNL performance in which she calls out the Catholic Church or covering up child sexual abuse. My respect for this courageous act will never diminish. ua-cam.com/video/X0VpfiMcPPA/v-deo.html
It’s an amazing performance of a Prince original. It works so well because the camera is close up on her face and you can see she’s clearly genuinely missing someone (in this case her mother). When the tears roll down her cheeks it makes me want to reach out and give her a hug every time.
She was on a rocket because of her unbelievable voice. Then the next I see, she’s the musical guest on SNL, and she holds up a photograph of the Pope, calls him the “enemy” and tears the photograph in half on live tv. People, NBC Network and others LOST their damn minds. She was never heard from again as far as I know. She did have rumors/gossip about her emotional health. But, her voice is undeniable. Superb.
When you tell the truth on national TV, you're gone. She was exposing the hypocrisy of the churches abuses of children before the massive amounts of the cover ups were known- all the way up to the pope.
I think she was the first, or one of the firsts, who brought Catholic priests' child sex abuse. If she did the tearing up the pope pic today it wouldn't even be a first page story. But she didn't care about anything but getting out that message. And..... it ruined her. She was Me Too 2 decades before it's existence.
I am so sad about the loss of Sinead O'Connor! Glad I've got some company tonight. I played this beautiful song whenever it just didn't work out. Thank you and rest in peace, Ms. O'Connor
I saw Sinead right before lockdown, for the second time. I’m shocked you’ve never heard of her. Her voice is just as amazing live. She’s had a very difficult life, and lost her son recently. I hope she finds solace in her life like we do in her music.
I watched this video yesterday on the 25th of July 2023, and loved your reactions to this incredible artist. Today the news breaks that Sinéad has passed, a truly heroic voice, she deserved better than this world. Rest well Queen x
Kris Kristofferson was so kind to her when she was being treated like crap. I’ll never forget that. She has an amazing voice and I believe a recent release. Hauntingly gorgeous in every way💚💚💚
i was thinking she may be losing it when she tear up the pope´s picture on live tv but after some years and with things i´ve been learning i believe she got a point there
You know Sinéad passed away yesterday, All tv and radio stations in her home country of Ireland, and also in and the UK have covered no other news. She has released ten albums. Many European and US channels are reporting about her passing. This song was written by Prince. R.I.P. Sinéad.
Sinead is Irish, and is a hugely important artist. Still successful, but not in USA. Try "No Mans Woman" or "Reason With Me", or "Eight Good Reasons" to give you an idea of what she does.
Yes, maybe, but she's too self orientated to be really effective and is just, ultimately embarrassing, as she does not write the songs she sings but tries to make them about her. Sorry, I don't like this lady, never did because she's such a whiner and other Women need better than this as a support. Been waiting a long time to call this selfish woman out, so there it is!
@Anne - Troy, Fire on Babylon, Three Babies, etc. Sinead writes her own songs. Her debut album “Lion and the Cobra” reached widespread critical acclaim and was arguably best album of the year. This was before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. Yes, she has done her own arrangements for and covered a handful of songs by other artists. Something many legendary singers and bands do and have always done. She has been specifically requested by iconic rock bands and composers to do them the honor of performing live renditions of their songs. Yet she has written or co-written the majority of her music.
This video won video of the year when it came out. Prince wrote the song but let Sinead perform it. He said, the song belongs to Sinead now! She is from Ireland. Her voice and vocals are so powerful!
Prince didn't let her perform it, he knew nothing about it until it was released and he was really angry about it because she wasn't one of his stable of artists and then tried to beat her up at a meeting at his house.
Here in the UK that song is one of the only songs that can get a grown man of my generation to shed a manly tear. So emotional and has true meaning to the words that everyone can relate to. Sinéad O'Connor was a voice to be heard in song and in life. When she tried to speak about the truth behind the abuse in the Catholic faith she lost everything. It's truly a shame.
Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪 I remember the first time I heard it I was 9 years old 1989 with my dad who’s passed too very emotional for the Irish people rest in peace Sinead we loved you then we love you still 😢❤ ❤❤
As everyone else has said it's a Prince song. The video was filmed in one take and those are real tears rolling down her cheek. Much love from England 🏴
Sinade didn't write this song, Prince did, and it sent her into the music stratosphere when this came out. Sadly, Sinaed had a very difficult childhood when it came to her mother (who I think was mentally challenged), but she was thinking of her when she sang this song. After this song became a big hit, she was asked to host Saturday Night Live (and this is when she tore a picture of the Pope up in front of everyone) which didn't go over well, it affected the rest of her career. Her point, the church is full of BS, and they didn't protect the children. Tragic that she has suffered with these demons all her life. She's Irish
This song did make her a one-hit-wonder, unfortunately she was not stable enough to hang on to it. At the time she blamed the Catholic church for many of her problems. She later was ordained as a priest and then converted to Islam. Obviously a troubled soul.
@Steve - Granted, this was clearly her biggest hit but she wasn’t exactly a one hit wonder. She was already a successful artist prior. Her debut album “ Lion and the Cobra “ reached widespread critical acclaim and was hailed by some as best album of the year. Through the 80’s and 90’s her music videos played constantly. At least a couple dozen songs on rotation. Including one written for an Academy Award winning film. Famous composers were requesting her to perform their songs live. Also, she wasn’t blaming the Catholic Church for her problems. She was protesting against the silence of nations who were covering up the crimes of child abuse within the church. Something that was very much justified.
Ireland knew all about the church sex scandal because they were victims in it and the church had taken out an insurance policy to cover the lawsuits claims and it made the news. the US knew nothing about it, and without the internet, or a proper explanation from Sinead when she did it, that narrative was that it was just her hating on Catholics (she was one herself) and the pope.
I literally fell for Sinead the very first time I saw this performance. Her voice is obviously incredible, the emotion in the song is utterly palpable, but that actual performance, the incredible acting in her face and eyes, just broke my heart and made it hers.
@@annedunne4526 She gets mad respect in Ireland, deservedly so. She came from a very rough background, achieved so much and found happiness after a long struggle with mental illness.

Any song Prince wrote is awesome, but Sinead's performance is spot-on. She really nails the emotion of this song. Check out Shield E. , "Glamorous Life" another Prince collaborator.
This is one of those true timeless classics that will be forever. Absolute perfection, in every way. Prince wrote this for him self but when he herd her sing, he wanted her to bring her soul in to this song and she did that and then some!
This is the one song that brings me to tears every single time I hear it. Her emotion is palpable. Please, please, please react to The Cranberries, “Zombie”. That’s another bombshell Irish female voice and the lyrics are DEEP.
She recorded this video just after her mother's passing. The emotion you hear, and see in her eyes is real intense pain and pure sadness/emotion. I've even read she had a difficult relationship with her "abusive" mother. And then to get canceled for speaking truth on abuse in the Catholic Church years before it was out. Society owes her an apology.
“It’s been seven hours and fifteen days, since you TOOK YOUR LOVE AWAY” How brutal this was from the perspective of to the songwriter? I think this was a great way to describe that pain. Also how sad is “a bird without a song”? OMG, Prince was genius! 🥰 Did you notice how deep she went on this interpretation, she cries at the end of the song. She is from Ireland, and went throught realLy difficult times after she publicly tore a photo of pope in a protest against the silence of the Catholic church on the children abuses. Very underated artist.
This song was everywhere when it came out, and nobody had heard anything like it. If you want to hear another cover of this by a male(this is a Prince cover) please, please listen to Chris Cornells cover of this, it will make you just as emotional. You reacted to Chris with his band Temple of The Dog, Hunger Strike. You wont be sorry!🎶🎵❤
@@debbiemccain5850 well, when It came out, it was a huge hit, and in the beginning I didn‘t know that it was composed by Prince. I just read in Wikipedia, that it was composed 1985 by Prince for a Project called „The Family“ and was unrecognised until Sinead had this huge success in 1990. So in a way maybe we are both wrong or both right…
There is more than just her vocal range, but the range of her emotions being projected. Ranging from nearly braking down and weeping to anger to the warm happy remembrance of what once was.
Just for comparison Chris Cornell covered this acousticly and while both versions are haunting in their own ways both are uniquely beautiful. Prince was a musical genius 💜
If you watch any of her interviews her and her siblings were horribly, horribly abused by their mom. Very sad story. This song... probably one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Probably one of the best female vocalists ever. There's a fragile and angelic quality to her voice that few can match. I would recommend: Fire on Babylon, Troy, Three Babies, Black Boys on Mopeds, Last Day of Our Acquaintance, 1000 Mirrors, Daddy I’m Fine… the list goes on and on. Very important artist. Thank you.
Her voice is pure silk! Prince actually wrote this song, but I can’t imagine anyone singing this song but Sinead. She’s from Ireland, by the way, and unfortunately has recently passed away (a few days ago). So very sad! 😢
Sinead's voice can cut and heal in the same song, the pathos in her tune "To Mother You" & the anguish in "Fire On Babylon" make them opposite ends of the emotions that are real for her. A beautiful soul still on the process of healing.
Same!🔥❤👏👍I have the Universal Mother & the lion and the cobra CD'S as 2 of the 6 in my car as we speak, and I started adoring her in high school...over 30 years ago! There's not too many artists who's cds will still be in any fans top 6 30 plus years from now!!
There is an amazing live version of this which is more than just a performance, its a human being expressing her heart and soul into her vocals and theres a documentary just come out called 'Nothing Compares' which is brilliant and shows who she was and her motivations and why she was a true artist who followed her conscience. I believe she thought of her mother when she sang this despite her mother being a very troubled woman who physically, mentally and spiritually beat Sinead when she was young and who died when Sinead was 18, it almost seems like despite everything Sinead is somehow forgiving her....RIP Sinead...gone from this Earth but your amazing voice lives on...
I see now why everyone likes this version of this song. Vocals are perfect for it. My favorite song she sings is also a cover, that you two really need to check out is when she sang Pink Floyd's song Mother, at the Wall Live in Berlin concert...Her vocals give you goosebumps. Thanks. I do remember all the controversary that went on with her and when she shaved her hair..
And all the outrage when she burned the picture of the Pope live on SNL!!! 😳 WOW she took a lot of hell for that. In fact, it greatly altered her career success. But her version of this song is beautiful, haunting, and unforgettable 💜

Yes, props to Prince for writing the sing and to Sinbad for singing it. Just like the song written by Dolly Parton, but sang by Whitney Houston, another example is Tennessee Whiskey sang by Chris Stapleton and written by someone else. I know there are many other examples.
Prince wrote it, but he didn't record it. He wrote it for a group that he put together called The Family. The group was a flop. So yes, this cover is the definitive version, but the original was a flop.
Sinéad is an Irish Gaelic name, that's why the pronunciation is different than what you would think in English. She is an amazing artist, her emotion is always so raw.
There is so much about this vocal performance that is technically astounding: the radical changes of tone in the middle of lines, the jumping an octave in "nothING"... But it's the emotional power more than anything that blows me away. For me it's as good a vocal performance as any I've heard. Brilliant.
Spot on and to think Prince didn't like her version of this song or the arrangement , just shows he writes a good song but he was sooo wrong , this version of the song is pure perfection .
I saw her live in the early 90's, I cried the whole time. Everything about her is just so beautiful. Other good songs by her are Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes.
As much as I always loved this song and her voice I just couldn't listen to it often because it made me sad, her voice made me feel her pain😭 that is talent!
Ahh yes...back then, we were amazed at this gorgeous singer's rendition of Prince's song. And that simple, yet effective video...she improvised those tears. Nothing like it. Pure art. Thank you for appreciating it too.
He didn't chose her at all. Read your history. (She called him an abusive egoist. They had a big fight, yes there were drugs, but Sinead won the fight and left. Was gonna call the cops but felt sorry for him. She said he looked like a little girl. HAHAHA!)
@hermand - What are you talking about? Her debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” released to widespread critical acclaim and was hailed as one of the best albums of the year. Long before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. She made dozens of videos, had numerous hits, wrote songs for Academy Award winning films, etc. Just because you are unaware of her body of work does not mean everyone else is.
Prince wrote this, and his original version is exactly like this with her vocals - the first version he wrote for a group The Family - the haunting beat, tempo to the melody , the choir, the lyrics, are all Prince itt is not "redone." and she sings it beautifully - this shows really how talented Prince was - wrote amazing songs for other artists - Feel for U - Chaka Khan, Manic Monday for the Bangals and many more.. He does another version of this that is more soul and bluesy when he goes on tour.. Sinead his fantastic as well. Play Manic Monday. :) 80's-90's was and is awesome. Prince was the Mozart of that era.
Preach! Yes, the Purple genius will live on forever. "...like a bird without a song", SUCH a Prince line. Sinead's voice is amazing and with Prince writing we have pure magic. The Song Never gets old. 💜💚
Watched today because we lost her recently. You all are so observant and good at what you do because you can hear her talent straight away. She got black balled in US for being a rebel. But she continued to make music but not widely heard in US. I will be checking out her more recent albums now that she's gone to appreciate her stunning talent as a singer.
This song was SO huge when it came out that my local major market rock station (yes - ROCK music station) actually played this every morning on my way to work. It was sandwiched in between a Black Sabbath tune and maybe Poison or some other rock song! No one complained, however because it's that good.
It is great to see you reacting to Sinéad O'Connor. Sinéad has done a lot of great songs, starting with her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. An incredibly angry, wonderful album. I'd recommend trying a song or two from that album. If you want one of the most quietly rageful songs ever, try the song Troy. If you want something dancy, Mandinka is a great one. I Want Your (Hands On Me) is another great one. I love everything about that album. From the same album as the one you just listened to, Black Boys on Mopeds is a great one - a bit on the sad side, but still wonderful. The Emperor's New Clothes is another great one from the same album. She has done a variety of different musical styles, including a reggae album and an album of traditional Irish songs. Unfortunately, she has had a pretty hard life, dealing with abuse as well as a hard struggle with mental illness, which she has spoken quite publicly about to help destigamtize mental illness. Her musical work is well worth exploring.
It's funny in a way that even though I've known almost every song you've reacted to but have forgotten about many of them until your reactions. Thank you. Keep it up as you two are great. Peace be with you.
You guys have to hear her sing this live, its even better, im usually not a live kind of person, but her stage presence is just incredible her voice is insane such a loss to the wotld, she lived such a troubled life all she wanred was to make the music she loved coukd care less about money, and for everyone to be happy and get along not many artist like her,
She was an iconic figure for speaking out the truths of what was thought to be rumor. As an artistic singer her voice captured my heart and soul. The words of this song, so soulful. It showed how depressing life can get from failed relationships, death in the family, reminiscing past loves. Even mentioning seeing a physician to help one cope... and her voice sang so beautifully it made up for the message of the song Prince wrote for her. Great reaction for another great song.
I worked with Sinead for 3 years and I got to hear her sing every night, and every night I had goosebumps her voice is something really special.

And still... people keep telling this big fat herd of people the truth about their society but they just won't listen.. so the misery and predatory economics continues.
Its really tragic what happened to her after tearing the popes picture on SNL. I think i saw her on Dr Phil. She basically had a nervous breakdown, homeless and penniless. A shame because she was so talented. Very sad. 😥✌❤

She is from Ireland
Prince wrote this song. She was part of a controversy when she was on SNL. She tore a picture of the Pope in response to what were merely rumors, of child abuse. Turns out she was spot on about the abuse in the Church
To Sinead, they weren't rumours.
"Merely rumors"? No, it wasn't merely rumors at the time. Irish kids were talking about being abused but the police, bishops and often their parents were not doing anything about it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this song cannot even come close to some of his sensual ballads like Do me Baby, Scandalous or Insatiable.

As much as I love Prince, and I really do, I think her version kills it. Love this video. The closeup on her face is breathtaking.
Sinead OWNS this. PERIOD! And Prince was gracious enough to let her own it.
Prince really loved her version, too.
Prince's original is a duet and has a totally different feel. I prefer this one too.

No autotune, just pure talent.
But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that's what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting." ??? Yes, she was a very, very talented singer with a beautiful voice, but was a little out there and it hurt her.
@@lameduck3105 Indeed. Talented as hell but out of her gord.
My respect for this courageous act will never diminish.

yes first person i noticed, prince look above messages see if uou on what i typed
She was one of the big targets of the Gores. Tipper Gore went after the music industry big time
She stayed popular in Europe I believe
She was protesting the church covering up sexual abuse of alter boys. She was right.
She wasn’t a one hit wonder. She was a Huge Star. But she was always controversial. Btw she’s Irish ☘️

She sang backup for Peter Gabriel on the song Blood of Eden from his album us
Good choices hope this is picked up!
Well I dont knpe why...not in the US
Yes, maybe, but she's too self orientated to be really effective and is just, ultimately embarrassing, as she does not write the songs she sings but tries to make them about her.

They have already done that song
the greatest
This voice! She broke everyone's heart with this song ( damn Prince!)...Just gorgeous.
She was “cancelled” for tearing up the photo of the pope.

Simply one of the best videos ever produced. Raw, minimal production. Alanis Morrisette sort of mimicked with “Head Over Feet”
She recorded this video just after her mother's passing. The emotion you hear, and see in her eyes is real intense pain and pure sadness/emotion.
I've even read she had a difficult relationship with her "abusive" mother.

Shame he and Sinead did not hit it off when they met because they were both geniuses and great musicians
Her musical work is well worth exploring.
she was too far ahead and paid for it sadly
Such an incredible voice that was cancelled by fear of the Catholic Church. She gave the world so much more than the world gave her.
Thank you PRINCE for this song.💜
Thank you Sinead for your voice.🖤
It's funny in a way that even though I've known almost every song you've reacted to but have forgotten about many of them until your reactions. Thank you. Keep it up as you two are great. Peace be with you.
Sinead’s voice is incredible but her “unique” singing style is distinctively Irish.
totally. I'm not Irish (kiwi) but i always thought that little flourish when she rolls the end of a phrase sounds Irish.
Prince is the writer, Sinead and Chris Cornell both covered this song. Check out both. Love the great reaction like always!
Cornell put this one in his pocket. His version was much better.
