Hey, Mike and Ginger! I’m so glad to see a Shakespears Sister reaction. Haven’t seen much of those here in UA-cam. As a Bananarama and Shakespears Sister fan, I’m going to give some pieces of information just as curious facts. Siobhan Fahey, the former Bananarama band member, left the band in early 1988 as she became more and more unhappy with the musical direction the band group was taking. She thought the music had become too slick and poppy. This was at the time they had released hits like I Heard and Rumor and Love in the First Degree. Added to her unhappiness with the band, she got married with Dave Stewart from Eurythmics and had become a mom. The family moved to Los Angeles. Siobhan knew she wanted to venture out musically speaking and had decided to go solo but deep inside she never felt secure of going completely solo. Later, she met Marcella Detroit, who was at the time the girlfriend of Richard Feldman, one of the songwriters Siobhan had been collaborating with. Dave Stewart saw how Siobhan and Marcella were working together and suggested they formed the band. Shakespears Sister was born. Siobhan got the name from The Smiths song of the same name only that when creating one of the band’s signs a typo was done but it was decided to be kept with typo and everything as it also meant the name of the band would have its own identity other than The Smiths song. About Stay, I’m going to give you some cool facts: #1: Yes, the album’s name is Hormonally Yours. The title of the album was because at the time of the recording both Siobhan and Marcella were pregnant. #2: Stay remained on the top of the charts in the U.K. for 8 consecutive weeks. It is the band’s biggest hit and one of the singles that stayed the most time at #1 over there. #3: Siobhan hated Stay - I’m not sure if she’s changed her mind about that - because she felt it was not representative of the band. Siobhan usually was the lead vocalist but in Stay it was the other way around. Marcella performed lead vocals and Siobhan did backing vocals and that solo bit when the guitars kick in. #4: Siobhan almost always wrote the lyrics of Shakespears Sister’s songs. However, with Stay, the only part she wrote was the section she sang herself. #5: About the video, Siobhan drank a whole bottle of vodka prior to shooting her scenes. Apparently, she felt restless of having to wait long hours on the set so she drank the vodka. Vodka or no vodka her performance in the video was stellar and it is scary. #6: The male model that appears in the Stay video is Thomas Scott-Evans, who dated another Bananarama member, Keren Woodward (the brunette) and fathered her only child. #7: The Stay video was banned in Germany because the video was given the interpretation that it was about resurrecting the dead. #8: At the time of the Hormonally Yours album release and its respective singles releases, Marcella and Siobhan’s relationship had deteriorated up to the point when they were not speaking to each other. Marcella got her own manager behind Siobhan’s back and Siobhan became a little jealous of the recognition Stay got, the sole song whose lead vocals were not performed by her. Siobhan eventually started battling depression which led to the break up of the band. Siobhan would continue under Shakespears Sister’s name but it was just her. She got into a psychiatric unit and fortunately recovered. Also as something else that is fortunate, in more recent years Siobhan and Marcella met and talked for the first time in about 27 years, cleared their differences, buried the hatchet, got together, released new music and toured. #9: Please do check other Shakespears Sister’s songs. Hello (Turn Your Radio On) is a must. Stay is beautiful but for me Hello is an underrated hell of a masterpiece. Sorry for the long-ass post. I guess I get carried away when it comes to the music I love.
When you started naming the Banarama songs I was blown away! This song has had a huge impact on my life in various ways. The first though was me performing it at a school concert in 92 (am a guy btw). I spent a long time trying to "channel" Siobhan performances. The best compliment I got was "...you looked demonic". I was at a Catholic School...
3:20 The change of the song is the best part. Siobhan Fahey was so very wonderful, amazing and beautiful as death in this video. :) It doesn't matter if she was very drunk when filming this video, she still gave a fantastic performance. :)
I don't care how drunk Siobhan was, when she was in Bananarama and I was about ten....... We were going to get married,A)she didn't know it and B) we never met! 🏴
One of my favourite songs of all time. I have had the whole album since it came out. I recommend - Goodbye Cruel World - The Trouble with Andre Both are epic too! 🎉
Marcella Detroit is one of the great reinventions of Pop. You might also know her work with Eric Clapton, as she worked with him for 4 years in the 70's as Marcy Levy. She co-wrote Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight and sang backup on many of his songs, like "The Core" off his Slowhand album. She just has an Incredible voice. Also the effect you talked about is called "Flange" of "Flanger". It was a Common effects pedal that guitar players used in the 60's - 80's before the days when electronics took over.
I'm so glad that I have finally seen a video of music reviewer's reacting to Shakespears Sister's Stay! I was fortunate enough to meet them both at their reunion concert last year and OMG they were brilliant!!!!! Hormonally Yours came about for their vinyl name as both ladies were pregnant with their son's at the time of making the record! Fantastic video guys and thank you for reacting to the song!!!
Fun fact you've probably already been told, the one coming down the stairs had to wait a long time to be filmed and was drinking, by the time she was film she was totally drunk that's why it worked so well.
Love SS. Saw them live, they were awesome. fun fact, the one with the high voice (Marcella Detroit) co-wrote and sang back up on Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton. Marcella left the band after this but Siobhan (from Bananarama) was married to Dave Stweart of Eurythmics. she recorded a few more albums. #3 (name of album) was awesome. they reunited last year. their video all the queens horses is epic. tells the story. since they had not spoke in 26 years and are now back together.
Shakespeares Sister have reunited and recorded a new album. But check out their other songs from the same album, "Harmonally Yours". Their new single, "When She Finds You" off their new album, "Ride Again" is also worth a listening to as well as, "All the Queen's Horses". Enjoy 🎶
"Stay", "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)" & "I Don't Care" are three of my favorite songs ever, all by these ladies. I spent ages as a kid learning the "rap" part in "I Don't Care" until I could do it perfectly.😂
Just wanted to add to my previous post, but if you thought Shakespeares Sister were otherworldly all I can say to Enya is head & shoulders above that, she really is that special. I really look forward to you listening to her gorgeous voice at the earliest opportunity
Run Silent, You're History, Goodbye Cruel World, Hello (Turn Your Radio On), I Don't Care are other great tracks from them. They are back together and making new music :)
Siobhan and Marcella was an odd pair and shows the power of opposites attraction through music that makes it so different. Stay aways reminds me of my best friends death at the same time this song came out. Siobhan gives you chills when she comes in. The fact that Marcella sang on some of the most iconic Clapton songs like lay down Sally and the core really is amazing to me
Ironically, they were fighting off-screen at the same time as fighting on-screen and split up soon after this. They actually got together and re-launched last year, doing interviews and singing Stay on UK chat shows. The band's name is spelled 'Shakespear's Sister' without the last 'e': it was originally a typo on a sign, but Siobhan decided to keep it.
Marcella has some serious song writing chops , having worked with Clapton, Burt Bacharach, A Franklin , Belinda Carlisle and many , many more. Has done duets with Alice Cooper and Robin Gibb of the BeeGees.
This song was produced/mixed by Chris Thomas, who also produced songs for the Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Wings, Bryan Ferry, Elton John, INXS, Roxy Music, Rod Stewart, Sting and the Beatles. It's a very underrated element of the song, the mixing and production are amazing. The beat, reverb, doubling that high/whistle note up etc, add so much. Like the vocalists are both great in their own right but it's also worth noting just how well this song was produced. So many things you perhaps don't even notice, just add so much.
Marcy Levy's voice is superb, but siobhan is so much better than her bananarama days, a wee bit of musical history guys, Marcy is credited with writing Eric Clapton song 'Lay Down Sally's, loved your reaction, cheerio from Glasgow.
Marcella Dedtoit has the most amazing voice. She appeared on a show called 'Pop Star to Opera Star' where she sang The Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute .. one of the hardest things to sing ever. Just google Marcella Detroit - Queen of the Night
Don't take my word for it, but I think this song is about addiction. Marcella is portraying the addiction, telling its victim to fight to stay alive so they can continue being addicted. Siobhan portrays Death, who is taunting the victim. The victim can either die and join Death or stay alive and continue to be addicted. Either way, Death doesn't really care because it knows the victim will eventually be back. I say that Marcella portrays addiction because of certain lines: "You must only think of me There can be no in-betweens" "When your pride is on the floor I'll make you beg for more" Those lines especially seem alarming. They fell out and didn't speak for over two decades. Catch 'All the Queens Horses' from 2019 when they reformed, sadly the virus has put an end to that for now. But the song and video is a wry take on their patching things up and getting back together. Odd to think they are in their 60's now.
I love the part where Marcella is tending to the guy laying on the pool table in the bar, just like in this video, and Siobhan just rolls her eyes as if she can't believe Marcella is up to that old trick again. lol
