I was left a quadriplegic back in 87 from a dirtbike crash. I was in month 6 or 7 out of 8 in hospital/rehab. My sister and brother-in-law brought a tape of this and put it on my Walkman with headphones. I'm still here after 35 years of many downs but enough ups to keep me from giving up, Hearing this cuts deep, but it reminds me of the gift of hearing it from them. Both warm and wrenching.

The very first song written by a 14 yr old Kate Bush is "the man with a child in his eyes" . Once you hear it and realize that was her very first? You will then know that she is beyond next level. She studied with Mime for years just so that she could physically express her music. Must react to the 90's masterpiece Sensual World. In Fact that whole record is just epic. The fretless bass work is so amazing. Kate loves the bass and gives the instrument total freedom in her work.

She was sitting on the top of the piano, accompanied by Paul Shaeffer, playing, along with a backing track, and it was amazing. I had never heard of her before. As you listen to more Peter Gabriel you will start to see how these two artists fit together. Both are from the same genre of music. You mentioned how the intro and outro "sounded so Kate Bush", yet the song is written by Peter Gabriel. Inspired by Depression era photos and focused on the economic hardship at the time, Gabriel wrote the song from an American country/roots point of view. Is initial choice to sing the second part was Dolly Parton, but when she turned him down he brought in his friend, Kate Bush. The rest is history.

Having known this song SO well for decades (see wot I did there?) it's only recently that I read about the alternate timeline where Dolly Parton accepted the offer... and truly, honestly, I just can't imagine that world at all... omg, a world without this version and this video, that's too awful to contemplate, even though I love Dolly too...

Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (80s Amnesty Concert in Philadelphia) Other favorite Gabriel tracks: Biko, Shock The Monkey, Solsbury Hill, Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes, Big Time...ah, don't get me started. Great reaction. Enjoy, y'all!

I loved your reaction to this, Jay and Amber. Peter Gabriel wrote this song after watching a documentary about The Great Depression in America, originally he thought that Dolly Parton would sing the other part but she wasn't available so, he asked Kate Bush whom he knew well and I for one think that she was the perfect choice to sing this duet.

Thank you so much for getting to this, guys! This means a great deal to me. I came out of a mental breakdown in 2020/2021 and this song perfectly describes the rock that my wife was for me when I was at my worst. She kept me afloat and I can never truly repay her for that. I can now say I am better now than I have ever been in my entire life and we just found out last week that we are expecting our first child. Proof if you found the one, you’ll be just fine and will get through anything! Love you guys!

It is such a beautiful duet. This was already a moving song. It took on more meaning after my husband died suddenly from massive heart failure and he LOVED Kate Bush, so it was doubly hard to hear. Next, I heard Matthew Perry reference it in an interview and it became more meaningful. Then, they played it at his funeral. 😢
From a podcast with Tom Power:
When asked what music might be on a hypothetical soundtrack for his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry confidently told Power, "''Don't Give Up.' Listen to this song when you get home, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. I don't know if you've heard it as it was a long time ago but it's beautiful."
In the interview I watched, Matthew even described how they filmed it with just the two of them hugging and the camera moving around them etc. I'll never see this the same way I originally did when it came out.
